What Rhymes With “AIM/AME”?
1. Do you have good aim? Somewhat I guess.
2. Is there anyone you want to maim? Uh, no.
3. Are you everything that you claim to be? I claim to be nothing and I am, so hey.
4. Do you acclaim people often? Not really often, but I do it when I can and see fit.
5. What’t the last thing you exclaimed? Probably screaming about a bug haha.
6. What’s the last thing you proclaimed? “I’m so tired.”
7. What would you do if Santa came down your chimney right now? Uh, I’d be terrified if I heard a loud noise coming from the other room and saw someone coming down my chimney!
8. Have you ever heard the term “dame” used to describe a female before? Yeah.
9. Do you wish that you could experience fame and fortune firsthand? I’d like to experience the fortune, not the fame.
10. What’s your favorite game? - card, board, and outdoor? I love boardgames.
11. Do you ever feel lame? Yes.
12. What’s your name? Stephanie.
13. Do you wish that every day was the exact same? Everyday is the same for me. It’s like I’m on a continuous loop.
14. Do you have any pets who aren’t very tame? My doggo has gotten more tame as she gets older. She’s only 3, but as a pup and up until she was 2, she was pretty hyper. She was like at toddler running around, getting into stuff. She used to purposely pick up something off the floor like a sock, shoe, or a piece of paper and run away, wanting us to chase after her. I say purposely cause I swear she knew she was being a brat haha. She’d get this look in her eye right before and then quickly run away after.
15. Have you ever blamed someone else for something that you did? I’m quick to blame myself for everything.
16. Do you like roasting marshmallows over a flame? I’ve actually never done that. I’ve had melted marshmallows for s’mores, but it was in the microwave.
17. How many picture frames are in your house? A few.
18. Isn’t it a shame, what’s going on in the world today? It’s horrible.
19. Do your parents like the person that you became? I’m sure they don’t like seeing their child going through a hard time and being in such a low place. I’m sure it’s very frustrating, too. I know I’m definitely not happy with the person I’ve become.
20. If you could rename yourself, what would you like to be called? I’m good with the name I have.
21. Why should you give your surname out on the internet? I don’t give my surname out.
22. Did you see Avengers: Endgame? Did you think that it was any good? Yes, I loved it. I was a mess at the end. :(
23. Do you have any nicknames? Just Steph and Sis.
24. Do you pregame before sporting events? I don’t watch or attend any sporting events.
25. Have you ever been to a ballgame before? Nope.
26. What’s the biggest obstacle that you ever overcame? Some stuff when I was a kid involving my disability.
27. Do you watch the postgame shows after sporting events on television? I don’t watch any sports.

2019 Top Games of the Week: Week 2
Tumblr media
Guys, Week 2 really isn’t that good. We’ve got two high profile matchups and a bunch of nothing going on at the highest level. The G5 and FCS have some interesting games, but the P5 is relatively desolate.
The Top Ten Games of the Week
10. #21 Syracuse 1-0 (0-0) at Maryland 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
Fun stat: neither Syracuse or Maryland have given up a point yet. Obviously that’s gonna change. The Terrapins weren’t expected to do much this year, but they started things off on the right foot by victimizing poor Howard 79-0. They’ll face much stiffer resistance this weekend. The Orange are tasked with winning on the road for the second week in a row, though the Terps should prove to be a tougher test than Liberty. Yeah Week 2 isn’t great.
9. Army 1-0 at #7 Michigan 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
This one could get interesting. It probably won’t, but we can fantasize about Army running circles around big, tough Michigan for a while.
8. Arkansas 1-0 (0-0) at Ole Miss 0-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
The football gods have given us a crap-tastic schedule, so let’s start rolling in the dirt. Arkansas and Ole Miss have an early season date with destiny, with the winner temporarily getting out from under some serious pressure. The loser of this game is probably gonna go full meltdown for the rest of the year, and these fan bases are gonna light a fire under their coaches for failing to improve.
7 . Cincinnati 1-0 (0-0) at #5 Ohio State 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
A man can dream. Cincinnati has the opportunity (however small) to take down in-state juggernaut Ohio State. The Bearcats have one P5 scalp so far, but the Buckeyes are a much different beast than the Bruins.
6. California 1-0 (0-0) at #14 Washington 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
One of these teams is set out to avenge an embarrassing loss from the previous season, and it ain’t Cal. The Bears’ shocking upset of Washington last year fully dumped the conference champions on their butts and (temporarily) knocked them out of the Top 25 for the first time since 2015. I’m not sure it’ll play out that way this time. Cal’s defense didn’t look great against UC Davis so I don’t have super high hopes for the repeat attempt.
5. #25 Nebraska 1-0 (0-0) at Colorado 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
Hey, the CU-NU rivalry is back on, and both teams have a lot to prove. Week 1 wasn’t very kind to Nebraska and while they did win, the Cornhuskers’ uninspired performance against South Alabama is calling into question their bullish ranking. Colorado, meanwhile, pulled away from in-state rival Colorado State last week and could make an even bigger splash against a higher profile opponent. God, they should really play more often.
4. #23 Stanford 1-0 (0-0) at USC 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
Perhaps it’s a bit cruel putting this matchup all the way at #4 seeing as how both team’s starting QBs could be out, but it’s a rivalry and an important conference game. USC and Stanford both have very tough schedules coming up. It’s absolutely imperative to win this game to have any hope in their division races.
3. Miami FL 0-1 (0-0) at North Carolina 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
Hell, as far as I know this will decide the ACC Coastal. Miami wasn’t exactly outmuscled in their loss to Florida so the Hurricanes are definitely in the running to retake the crown. Meanwhile, North Carolina pulled off one of the more high profile upsets last week when they took down rival South Carolina in Charlotte. Let’s see how good the Tar Heels actually are, but before that, go watch Mack Brown’s heartwarming postgame interview. Mack’s back!
2. #12 Texas A&M 1-0 (0-0) at #1 Clemson 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
This is what we’re really interested in watching. Texas A&M nearly knocked Clemson out of the Playoff race early on last year, now the Aggies have to go to Death Valley to attempt the upset this time. This could very well be the Tigers’ toughest test of the season and it’s coming with a bit of concern over QB Trevor Laurence, who threw two picks last week in what should have been an even bigger blowout of Georgia Tech.
1. #6 LSU 1-0 (0-0) at #9 Texas 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
Oh yeah, we’ve got a top ten matchup. It’s a bit hard to tell if LSU or Texas is truly “back” anymore, or what that really means, but this game could do a whole lot to help us figure that out. The Tigers made huge strides last season but still can’t get over the hump by beating Alabama. The Longhorns were inconsistent but managed to score huge, high profile victories over Oklahoma and Georgia to make their case for being fully returned to the top ten pantheon. I can’t wait to see what happens in this oh-so-well-timed nonconference battle.
-
5 G5 Games of the Week
5. Minnesota 1-0 (0-0) at Fresno State 0-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
I’m convinced Fresno State would have beaten USC if the Bulldogs hadn’t allowed that unfortunate kick return touchdown. Fresno is still going to be one of the better G5s out West and they have a “golden” opportunity to claim a P5 win against the Gophers. Minnesota managed to stave off South Dakota State last week but a trip to the Central Valley is a much different proposition.
4. North Texas 1-0 (0-0) at SMU 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
The Safeway Bowl is going to be a big deal for both North Texas and SMU. The Mustangs are facing a difficult conference slate and need to pick up wins wherever possible. Meanwhile, North Texas is attempt to reassert themselves as C-USA favorites and could use the good press from beating their DFW rival in Dallas.
3. San Diego State 1-0 (0-0) at UCLA 0-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
I’m not sure how relevant San Diego State will be in 2019. On one hand the Aztecs have a pretty easy path to another West championship outside their date with Fresno. On the other hand, it looks as though the plug and play days where they relied on undersized running backs to push their way through opponents might be over. SDSU faces a high profile matchup and a trip to the Rose Bowl. UCLA might be mortal, but they still almost beat Cincinnati, even if that was somewhat luck assisted.
2. #18 UCF 1-0 (0-0) at FAU 0-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
Man, I wish this game happened in 2017. FAU is probably still in flux and shouldn’t win this game, but boy it would be fun to see the Owls make it close.
1. Marshall 1-0 (0-0) at #24 Boise State 1-0 (0-0) (Friday 9/6/19)
Oh hey, look at that, Boise is ranked again. It’s Conference USA mainstay vs Mountain West heavyweight in this out of conference clash. As far as I’m concerned this game owns Friday night because there’s nothing else worth watching on TV.
-
FCS Games of the Week
#6. #9 Kennesaw State 1-0 (0-0) at Kent State 0-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
I’m super surprised that the FCS only scored one measly win over the FBS last week. Here’s a good opportunity for another.
5. North Dakota 1-0 at #1 North Dakota State 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
The in-state rivalry between North Dakota and NDSU has smoldered for years while the two were in different conferences. Now, the Fighting Hawks and Bison will face off yearly once more. It doesn’t hurt that UND is probably getting better, but it also won’t help them this year either.
4. #17 Furman 1-0 (0-0) at Georgia State 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
Furman gets a transitive win over Tennessee if they pull this off.
3. #6 Maine 1-0 (0-0) at Georgia Southern 0-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
This one will be tough, but it’s one of the highest profile FCS-FBS games of the week.
2. #15 North Carolina A&T 1-0 (0-0) at Duke 0-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
The defending national champions make a trip to Durham in the only game in North Carolina involving a ranked team.
1. #12 Southeast Missouri State 1-0 (0-0) at #13 Montana State 0-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/7/19)
Oh wow it’s an actual ranked FCS vs FCS bout. Both teams have a pretty good chance at making the Playoff so this is more what you should watch to see how the other half plays when it’s not a body bag game. It’s good football, I promise.

Conn Smythe Trophy power rankings, odds 2021: Carey Price, Brayden Point among top five candidates for NHL’s playoff MVP
The weather is heating up and so is the “Coolest Game on Earth.” The 2021 Stanley Cup Final is finally upon us.
After a 56-game sprint and three rounds of high-octane playoff hockey, the NHL is down to the final two teams: the defending champion Lightning and the NHL’s most decorated franchise, the Canadiens.
While a team-first mentality is always the key component to a successful postseason run, there are a few players who have risen to the top for the coveted Conn Smythe Trophy, given to the best player in the postseason. Will this be the year we see the trophy handed to someone on the losing team? Or will it be someone skating away with not one, but two trophies in July?
MORE: Six of the biggest award snubs in NHL history
Sporting News ranks the top five MVP candidates entering the Stanley Cup Final:

5. Phillip Danault, Canadiens
You’re probably wondering how he got here. While he only has three assists in 17 games, Danault has become an integral role in the Canadiens reaching this point. The Quebecois centerman — alongside linemate Brendan Gallagher — has shut down the opposition’s top guys: The Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner and 2021 Rocket Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews in the first round, the Jets’ Nikolaj Ehlers and Kyle Connor in the conference semifinals and the Golden Knights’ Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone in the finals. Zero goals by six guys who all scored more than 20 in a 56-games-or-fewer regular season when facing Danault and crew.
Plus, he breaks out the pizza for the postgame press conferences so he’s got swag too.
Stanley Cup Final: Predictions, schedule, odds for Lightning vs. Canadiens
4. Nikita Kucherov, Lightning
Kucherov missed the entire regular season recovering from hip surgery and, despite not playing a lick between the end of September and May, has returned in tip-top scoring form. In 18 games he accumulated five goals and 27 points — 17 of those on the power play.
3. Brayden Point, Lightning
It was hard to pick a No. 2 between Point and Kucherov but the Calgary native’s three game-winners push& him past his teammate. Like last season’s Cup run, Point has been a game-changer for the Bolts. Last season he collected 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) in 23 games. This season he has already hit the 14-goal mark in just 18 games and has chipped in six assists. He tickled the twine in nine straight games — one behind the record by Reggie Leach — and has scored in all but five games this postseason.
2. Andrei Vasilevskiy, Lightning
Once again, Vasilevskiy has put together a stunning postseason run: He has posted a .936 save percentage and 1.99 goals-against average in 18 starts. At 5v5, his save percentage rises to .939. He has an NHL-best Goals Saved Above Average (4.85) and High-Density GSAA (5.55), according to Natural Stat Trick. The 26-year-old, who is up for the 2021 Vezina Trophy as the league’s best regular-season goalie, has pitched shutouts in every series clincher, including a Game 7 win over the Islanders to reach the ultimate series.

1. Carey Price, Canadiens
If the Canadiens can pull it off to beat the star-studded Lightning in the Stanley Cup Final, it’ll all be because of Price. An always-calming presence between the pipes, he has once again elevated his game in the postseason. The netminder has been stellar in net, posting a .934 save percentage, 2.02 goals-against average and a shutout.
While shorthanded, he has allowed just three goals on 63 shots (.952 save percentage). with two of those being from high-danger spots. Even if the Canadiens can’t pull it off, Price has a good chance of being just the sixth guy to win from the losing squad, joining Roger Crozier (Red Wings, 1966), Glenn Hall (Blues, 1968), Leach (Flyers, 1976), Ron Hextall (Flyers, 1987) and Jean-Sebastien Giguere (Mighty Ducks, 2003).

Georgia Tech: 2021 Atlantic Coast Men's Basketball Champions
Tumblr media
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- — Jose Alvarado couldn't contain his emotions as the horn sounded, collapsing in disbelief as his Georgia Tech teammates mobbed each other near midcourt.
He quickly ran to the celebration that included coach Josh Pastner — still sporting that can't-miss-it clear face shield.
"Coach, you're a champion, man!" Alvarado yelled as he joined him for a postgame TV interview amid fallen-from-the-rafters balloons and confetti.
The Yellow Jackets have their first Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament title in nearly three decades after beating No. 15 Florida State 80-75 in Saturday night's championship game. Just as importantly, they've secured an automatic NCAA Tournament berth to end an 11-year drought.
"A lot of emotions: joy, happiness, everything," said Michael Devoe, the tournament MVP. "I mean, this goes down in history for us."
Devoe scored 20 points for the fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets (17-8), who shot 52% after halftime and repeatedly capitalized on mistakes by the Seminoles to win their first ACC Tournament crown since 1993 and fourth overall.
ACC player of the year Moses Wright and Jordan Usher each had 11 of their 15 points after halftime for Georgia Tech, which got off to an 0-2 start this season with home losses to Georgia State and Mercer. The Yellow Jackets stood 9-8 after a loss at Clemson on a last-second shot Feb. 12 to find themselves facing bubble uncertainty.
But they haven't lost since. And there's no doubt about the NCAA tourney now after a remarkable climb, not after a strong finish against the second-seeded Seminoles (16-6).
"Our guys have just scrapped, fought, kicked, clawed — whatever they had to do to find a way to get wins this year," Pastner said. "And I'm just so darn proud of these young men."
Scottie Barnes had 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting for Florida State, which shot 56% but committed 25 turnovers that led to 31 points for the Yellow Jackets.
They came in all kinds of ways, from the Seminoles bobbling catches and having passes deflected to just throwing balls straight out of bounds. The 25 turnovers fell one shy of tying a tournament title-game record since the league began tracking the number in 1961, while Georgia Tech's 15 steals — five by Alvarado — was a title-game record since the league began charting it in 1976.
"We did turn the ball over a couple of times ourselves, what we call self-inflicted turnovers," FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said. "But for the most part, I think that they forced us into turnovers. ... I want to give them credit because they did an unbelievable job of just stripping us from the ball, and their defense created a mindset with us where we were unsure as to what we were supposed to do."
The Yellow Jackets avoided such trouble with just seven turnovers. But they were particularly steady down the stretch, making six of eight shots over the final eight minutes as well as 11 of 12 free throws in the final 90 seconds.
That included Alvarado knocking down a pair with nine seconds left after shaking off a hard fall, which had come right after Barnes' 3 pulled the Seminoles to 76-73.
The only thing that didn't go according to plan was the Yellow Jackets' celebration. Alvarado stripped RayQuan Evans and fed Devoe for a layup with 0.6 seconds left, but the Georgia Tech players began spilling onto the court early to celebrate. That led to a technical foul and two free throws for FSU, though the outcome was decided and the Georgia Tech party had begun.
Pastner kept that face shield in place, too, even as he stood atop a ladder — socially distanced from his team below — and cut down the final strands of net.
It was an unusual final pairing in a tournament altered by the coronavirus pandemic. No. 16 Virginia and Duke withdrew after positive COVID-19 tests within their programs. The title matchup marked the second finale without a North Carolina-based team, the other being Georgia Tech's win against Virginia in 1990.
Now the Yellow Jackets finally have another.
BIG PICTURE
Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets had won seven straight, including Thursday against Miami in the quarterfinals. Then their semifinal matchup with the Cavaliers was canceled to give them an unexpected off day before the final. They didn't shoot well from outside (5 for 23 on 3-pointers) but still won in their first title-game appearance since 2010.
Florida State: The Seminoles had a delayed tournament debut when their scheduled quarterfinal against the Blue Devils was called off, but they pushed past North Carolina in Friday's semifinals by locking down defensively in the final four minutes to close it out. They found themselves in another tough finish despite all the turnovers, though this time they couldn't keep the Yellow Jackets from getting to the line or scoring timely baskets.
UP NEXT
Both the Seminoles and Yellow Jackets will find out their NCAA Tournament seeding Sunday.

Oilers Finally Realizing their Full Potential
(Feb 17 EDM; 3, WPG; 2)
The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Wednesday night, acquiring two out of a possible 4 points in the series.
The Oilers started off strong with Jesse Puljujarvi and Leon Draisitl jumping up on the rush and scoring back to back goals within 21 seconds of each other, giving the Oilers an early 2-0 lead.
Connor Mcdavid picked up the primary assist on Puljujarvi’s 4th of the season, cementing his place among hockey royalty with his 500th career point in just 369 games.
Mcdavid tied Sidney Crosby for 8th fastest in NHL history to reach that milestone.
Mark Scheiffle scored on the Jets power play at the end of the first period to cut the Oilers lead in half heading into the first intermission.
Although the Oilers were outshot 35-30 on the night, Mike Smith put on another impressive performance, making 33 saves and posting a .943 save percentage on the night, securing the Oilers 3-2 win.
(Feb 19 EDM; 2, CGY; 1)
The Oilers extinguished the Flames 2-1 on Friday night in Edmonton, putting on a low scoring clinic.
Edmonton started the first period on time with Jesse Puljujarvi scoring just 5 minutes in to give the Oilers an early 1-0 lead. Not only was the offence flying high, but the flames were stamped out early and were unable to even register a shot in the first 7 minutes of the game.
They closed out the first period with a 1-0 lead over the flames, and Gaetan Haas extended the lead late in the second, but the flames responded with a goal from Rasmussen Anderson less than a minute later, bringing the flames within one heading into the third.
Defensively, the Oilers were confidently able to shut down the Flames offense and hold on to secure the win, improving their record to 10-8-0 and winning 5 of their last 6 games.
(Feb 20 EDM; 7, CGY; 1)
The Oilers dominated the Flames in the second half of their back to back meetings, defeating them 7-1 at home.
Connor Mcdavid, who was held off the scoresheet last game came back with a vengeance scoring a natural hat trick with two assists, leading the Oilers to the dominant win.
Mikko Koskinen made 43 saves and posted a .977 save percentage on the night.
“Your team has to grow.” Said head coach Dave Tippett postgame, who seemed happy, but not yet satisfied with his team’s overall performance.
“Early in the year there’s lots of video, there’s lots of growing to do. I give our guys a ton of credit; they've embraced how we wanna play as a team.”
The offense is buzzing, both goaltenders are performing well, and the Oilers have passed Montreal for second place in the North division. But as Tippet highlighted postgame on Saturday, there is definitely still room for growth.
The Oilers D-men have a tendency to cycle low in the offensive zone, creating dynamic pressure on the opposition. While this can prove to be an effective offensive strategy, it can often result in odd man rushes from the opposition.
So team defence is obviously an issue. The Oilers are missing players like Bear and Klefbom desperately, as they currently rank 27th in goals against. But as they continue to build upon their forward momentum, certain issues have be improved upon in order to keep up with a rapidly accelerating North division.
“We’ve found some results but there’s still more growth than this… there’s just parts of our game that can continue to improve if we wanna become the team we really wanna be.”
Dave Tippett seems ready for the challenges that lie ahead for his team
(Feb 23 EDM;4, VAN;3)
The Oilers stunned the Canucks with a 4-3 comeback win in Vancouver last night, extending their winning streak to 4 straight.
Although the Oilers seemed feisty and physical early on, they’re offense was immediately deflated as Bo Horvat managed to score from an awkward angle off the boards, giving the Canucks the early lead.
Seven minutes later, Tyler Myers scored with an unforgiving blast from the point (and an unfortunate tip from Tyler Ennis) extending the Canucks lead to 2-0. Elias Pettersson would then score at 15:17 to extend the lead further, but it was later undone by Dominik Kahun, settling the score at 3-1 heading into intermission one.
After a scoreless second, the Oilers came out flying in the third period, quickly climbing within one with another tally from Kahun at 0:55. Connor Mcdavid would then tie the game on the powerplay, causing for a dramatic finale.
With the Oilers confidently cycling the puck in the Canucks zone, Adam Larsson released a blast from the point richoteting first off the leg of Jujhar Khaira, then off the foot of Tyler Ennis and into the back of the net, finally awarding the Oilers a much deserved lead and thereby redeeming Ennis for the tip in own goal earlier on to secure the hard fought victory.
Oilers fans will look at this latest win as nothing short of triumphant. As head coach Dave Tippett has repeated constantly “your team needs to grow.”
That overall team growth has been quite noticeable in the team’s recent performances, as they’re finally trending upwards in a constantly shifting division.
Looking ahead
The Oilers face the Vancouver Canucks again on Thursday night. Hopefully another thrilling comeback won’t be required and the win streak continues. With steady goaltending and coherent defence and offence, the Oilers will be hard to stop.
After the Canucks, the Oilers will have to face the first place leafs three times in a row at Rogers place. While the Oilers have been on a heater, the Leafs won’t be laying down so easily. Both teams pride themselves on high powered offence, so expect some high scoring contests.
Will the Oilers continue to improve in the face of such adversity? Can they keep the winning streak alive against the league best Leafs? We’ll discuss it all here next week.
-Dave

Eat ’Em Up, Kats! Sam Houston Wins First Football Championship
News and important information on Point of Sale & POS Hardware.
WHO: Sam Houston State University football
WHAT: The Bearkats beat South Dakota State in Frisco Sunday, giving Texas its first NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) winner since the tournament began in 1978.
WHY IT’S SO GREAT: Remember what it’s like to watch a Texas college football team win a national championship? It’s fun. It’s agonizing. And it sometimes seems about as rare as being struck by lightning.
On Sunday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, lightning struck North Texas in the second quarter, delaying the FCS championship game between South Dakota State and Sam Houston for more than an hour. And then it struck again, when the Bearkats turned a 17–7 lead into a 21–17 deficit with five minutes and 41 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter . . . only to prevail, 23–21, with 16 seconds left.
The Bearkats join Division III Mary Hardin-Baylor (2016, 2018) and Division II Texas A&M–Commerce (2017) as recent Texas NCAA football national champions; the last school in the state win such a title at the Division I level, of course, was Mack Brown and Vince Young’s University of Texas Longhorns, in 2005.
Huntsville native and SHSU alum Richard Linklater is sort of the Matthew McConaughey to Sam Houston’s University of Texas, but he’s more of a baseball guy (and also not on Twitter). Instead, another distinguished graduate chimed in:
Congratulations to the #Bearkats on a national championship!!!! (Too many exclamation points? Don’t really care.)The South Dakota State squad played with grit and determination – one of the best games I’ve seen in a while.
— Dan Rather (@DanRather) May 17, 2021
Also offering congratulations was some combination of Governor Greg Abbott, his social media team, and an erroneous autocorrect.
In some ways, this was old hat for Sam Houston head coach K. C. Keeler, who won championships as a player at the University of Delaware and playoff berths as a Division III head coach at Rowan University before returning to his alma mater and leading them to the 2003 FCS title. Sunday’s game made Keeler the only coach to win an FCS championship at two different schools; he also passed Jim Tressel (of Youngstown State and, later, Ohio State) to become the winningest postseason coach in FCS history.
But for Sam Houston, the glory was new, and also overdue: under Keeler’s predecessor, Willie Fritz, the Bearkats lost to North Dakota State in the 2011 and 2012 championship games, while Keeler’s teams got bounced in the semifinals three times between 2014 and 2017. In the locker room after the game, the Pennsylvania native evoked the spirit of Philadelphia Flyers coach Fred Shero’s famous quote: “Win today and we walk together forever.”
(Shirtless college football players in cowboy hats. Talk about the best thing in Texas!)
“This is immortality,” Keeler said. “For the rest of Sam Houston’s life they’re going to celebrate this national championship. For the rest of existence.”
It almost didn’t happen. Sam Houston joined most of FCS (but not fellow Southland Conference teams Houston Baptist, Abilene Christian, and Stephen F. Austin) in choosing to play spring football for a shot at Frisco. The Bearkats played through all the usual COVID-19 limitations and then some, including not having a locker room (the athletics facilities were undergoing an “off-season” renovation), plus the Texas winter storm in February.
With a 6–0 record in the regular season and a number two seed in the postseason tournament, the Bearkats got to play every game at home until the championship, but with the bracket reduced from its usual 24 teams to 16 (eliminating a bye week for the top seeds, and generally reducing the potential for chaos/upsets), Sam Houston’s draw was anything but easy. To make the final game, they had to beat undefeated Big South champion Monmouth, eight-time national champion North Dakota State, and the only team besides North Dakota State to win the FCS championship since 2011, James Madison. The Kats needed a game-ending defensive play to dispatch Monmouth, trailed NDSU in the fourth quarter, and were down 24–3 at halftime against James Madison. Then they got to Frisco, where some players, unable to walk the graduation stage in Huntsville with the other students, participated in graduation rites held at the ballroom of an Omni hotel in Frisco.
And then came the rain and lightning. If you think college football in May is weird, how ’bout college football without halftime? Due to the second-quarter delay, the mid-game break was just three minutes. But for Sam Houston, such weirdness was just more of the usual.
“It wasn’t a shocker for us because we’ve dealt with stuff like that all year,” said Bearkats quarterback Eric Schmid. “We were kind of joking in the locker room, like, it’s got to be this way for us to win.”
It was a slippery game in more ways than one. Sam Houston’s defense knocked SDSU’s starting quarterback, Mark Gronowski, out of the game early. Schmid took one hit that had him spitting up blood, and another that saw the trainers re-taping his ankle. He hit the ground repeatedly and hard, as both a dangerous runner and before and after pass attempts. Had this not been the last game of the season, he might have missed the next one. Keeler said that offensive coordinator Ryan Carty told the QB, “‘I’m riding you in the national championship. You have three months to recover.’
“And Eric goes, ‘I know. Ride me.’
“You talk about a warrior and you talk about a guy who is just so calm under pressure and just doesn’t panic,” Keeler continued. “I think that’s why a lot of us felt that we were going to be fine on that last drive.”
Indeed, while SHSU’s defense allowed a hundred-yard rusher for the first time in 21 games—South Dakota’s Isaiah Davis rushed for 178, including an 85-yard touchdown—and the team did most of its offensive damage in the second quarter, you could sense that they expected to prevail in the game’s final minutes, as they had all postseason. Dominant three-hundred-pound defensive end Joseph Wallace, a Texas Tech transfer out of Dallas’s Skyline High School, said the team never questioned whether Schmid would get the Bearkats back into the end zone.
“That last play, I was looking at my D-line coach, Coach Siddiq [Haynes], and he looked at me in my face—he said, ‘Watch this, we’re going to win.’
“And I told him, ‘I already know, Coach.’ Nobody ever doubted on the sideline. We all knew what was about to happen, honestly.”
Schmid hit wide receiver Ife Adeyi on third and goal from the ten-yard line for the winning touchdown, but another Bearkats wideout, Jequez Ezzard, was the game’s MVP. The Howard transfer made plays like this all year:
Soft-spoken on camera during the trophy presentation (and left out entirely from the postgame press conference), Ezzard still got himself an exultant hot-mic moment on the ABC TV broadcast.
If the Bearkats were formerly the Oklahoma or Notre Dame of FCS—often in contention, but with no title to show for it—now they’ll look to be Clemson to North Dakota State’s Alabama, battling to be in the final game each year, and maybe starting their own dynasty. And oh yeah: one nice thing about spring football is that Sam Houston’s fall season starts only 107 days from now.

SEC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS!!!!!
March 17, 2019 - Bridgestone Arena: Nashville
SEC Tournament Championship
In my life, I don’t regret many things, but one I do regret is not driving up to Nashville to be at this game. But if ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it so I stayed where I was and didn’t mess with the mojo.
Both teams in this game were looking to break long SEC Tournament title droughts. Tennessee was looking for their first title since 1979 while Auburn was looking for their first title since 1985.
Through the first 10 minutes of this game, we looked to be heading for another classic as the teams swapped the lead a few times with the Vols ahead for a large portion of that segment of the game. One of the better plays early came from Malik Dunbar who knocked a tough shot while drawing a foul in #ClassicMalik fashion.
#ClassicMalik Gonna miss Malik so much next year. pic.twitter.com/2XhWRbXey3
— Jaylin Williams/Simpson Fan Account (@ShootyHoopsWill) April 12, 2019
The last 10 minutes of the the 1st half saw this game flip completely Auburn’s way. What we saw from the Tigers on the defensive side of the ball during that stretch was a thing of beauty. Auburn turned up the defensive intensity and played one of the best defensive halves in quite some time. Tennessee had more turnovers (9) than points (6) in the final 10 minutes of the 1st half.
Bruce had a great postgame quote regarding Auburn’s 1st half defense:
Man, @coachbrucepearl you KNOW I have mad love & respect for you but this left me in a daze .. Who knew the way Deshaun Davis played the game of football would bleed over into a passionate “undersized” basketball team. Wow Congrats to the SEC champs‼️ Love watching these guys pic.twitter.com/a9oRjRK1MK
— ⭐️Deshaun Davis⭐ (@_Davis_Boy12) March 17, 2019
Auburn got a huge contribution from Danjel Purifoy whose steal and layup gave Auburn the lead for good with 8 minutes to go. On the next possession, Purifoy’s steal led to a 3 from J’Von McCormick, who played big minutes as he did in the first game of the SEC Tournament due to foul trouble from Jared Harper. Harper was limited to 2 minutes in the first half due to 2 fouls but McCormick stepped up once again.
Danjel Purifoy’s defense leads to J’Von McCormick offense. So excited to see what these 2 do next year. pic.twitter.com/JoCyHfrJrN
— Jaylin Williams/Simpson Fan Account (@ShootyHoopsWill) April 12, 2019
A 3 from Bryce Brown would extend the lead to 25-18 moments later and 2 minutes later, Purifoy took John Fulkerson to school as his layup gave Auburn a 9-point lead finally forcing Rick Barnes to call a timeout after Auburn had embarked on a 12-0 run.
It didn’t help.
A block from Horace Spencer followed by a steal from Chuma Okeke set this 3-pointer up for Bryce.
More great defense and the understanding that 3 > 2. pic.twitter.com/mVSL8xlRPG
— Jaylin Williams/Simpson Fan Account (@ShootyHoopsWill) April 12, 2019
Auburn scored 16 straight before a bucket from Admiral Schofield ended a 7 minute scoring drought. Auburn led 32-23 at halftime. The Tigers led by 9 despite shooting just 5-20 from 3. Bryce Brown’s 3 3-pointers and 11 points led the way for Auburn.
The 2nd half was a different story, and a good kind for the Orange and Blue.
Auburn’s first 3 baskets came off the 3 ball, 2 of those from Chuma Okeke and the 3rd from Malik Dunbar, which gave Auburn a 41-28 lead.
And then the Tigers blew the game open with a sequence of plays so good, I’ll just let the video do the talking.
Chuma O-Three-Ke and then the signature play of the SEC Tournament, a block and transition 3 to put Auburn up 21!!!! pic.twitter.com/vlUxnNo7Ou
— Jaylin Williams/Simpson Fan Account (@ShootyHoopsWill) April 12, 2019
A 21-point lead for Auburn in the SEC Championship Game??? HOLY MOLY!!
The passing up of an wide open layup for a 3-pointer was indicative of the way Auburn played that year. As Dickie V said on repeat, the live off the 3. And on this afternoon, they certainly were living.
Okeke’s 4th 3 of the half put Auburn ahead 54-32. Tennessee put a mini run together to cut the lead down to 17 but Horace Spencer and Danjel Purifoy would make baskets to get the lead back to 22. But the tide began to turn for a brief as a 7-0 run brought Tennessee back to 15, 62-47 and the Vol crowd which encompassed most of Bridgestone Arena somewhat back to life.
But Bryce Brown and Danjel Purifoy put the stop to those comeback dreams really quick.
Tennessee cut the lead down to 15 twice but Bryce and Danjel were having none of that. pic.twitter.com/6nYzrAj8Pz
— Jaylin Williams/Simpson Fan Account (@ShootyHoopsWill) April 12, 2019
Jared Harper had huge games against South Carolina and Florida that got Auburn to Championship Sunday but dealt with foul trouble in this game. But Jared would make his mark in the final moments of this one with a “Jared Harper Range 3” as the final dagger.
Tomorrow on the @CollegeAndMag Hoops Tip-Off Countdown: “A Big Ole Night Night from Music City USA!” pic.twitter.com/rDqqHY0sn6

And with that, Auburn had done it, winning 4 games in 4 days to capture the SEC Tournament. The last team to win 4 games on their way to the SEC Tournament title was Georgia back in 2008, (which they did over 3 days, including 2 in 1 day due to a tornado that damaged the Georgia Dome).

Bryce Brown would finish as Auburn’s leading scorer with 19 points on 5-10 shooting from 3-point range. Bryce was named the SEC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Just as he did the previous Saturday, Chuma Okeke had a huge game against the Vols. He was 5-9 from 3 and had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Danjel Purifoy had 10 points and knocked down 2 big 3s in the 2nd half to thwart Tennessee’s momentum. Jared Harper had all 9 of his points in the final 4 minutes, and also dished out 6 assists.
Malik Dunbar had 8 points and 6 rebounds, while Horace Spencer and J’Von McCormick each added 6 points. The Auburn bench outscored Tennessee’s bench 30-10 in this one as despite playing an extra game compared to Tennessee, there was no fatigue issues for Auburn.
Here are the highlights!

And as great as the SEC Tournament was for Auburn, they got a really tough draw and a short turnaround being sent to Salt Lake City to face a team that hadn’t lost since January 3rd. But Auburn wasn’t done proving people wrong.

Months into the COVID-19 pandemic states are setting records for the most new cases and deaths in a week since the pandemic began.
USA TODAY
The Dodgers’ Justin Turner left World Series Game 6 with a positive COVID-19 test but returned to the field for a celebration and photos with the trophy. He hugged teammates and posed for photos, but didn’t keep a mask on the entire time.
In Wisconsin, the state saw its worst day in the coronavirus pandemic to-date. Its two-month-long outbreak is one of the worst in the country, and as the state repeatedly breaks daily case records, health experts expect hospitalizations and deaths to continue rising.
And three Western states will partner with California to independently review any FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine before distributing it to the public. Washington, Oregon and Nevada joined California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s “COVID-19 Scientific Safety Review Workgroup,” which will review the safety of any coronavirus vaccine.
More developments:
The White House has listed “ending the COVID-19 pandemic” among the Trump administration’s accomplishments. The U.S. breaks records for new coronavirus cases daily.
Workers considering moving to a lower cost-of-living area amid the pandemic could be hit with a massive pay cut.
📈 Today’s numbers: A USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins data through late Tuesday shows 20 states set records for new cases in a week while three states had a record number of deaths in a week: Nebraska Tennessee and Wyoming. The U.S. has reported more than 8.7 million cases and more than 226,600 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The global totals: 44 million cases and 1.2 million deaths.
Read this: USA TODAY recently checked back in with some of the dozens of Americans who spoke to us earlier this year after losing jobs because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and found that many have edged closer to financial calamity.

US reports more than 500K COVID cases in a week, setting another pandemic record
For first time since the pandemic began, the United States added more than half a million coronavirus cases in a week, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins University data.
This is the third day in a row the U.S. set a record for how many coronavirus cases it reported over the previous seven days.
On Tuesday, the country recorded 502,828 new coronavirus cases in the previous week. On Monday, the figure was 489,918, and on Sunday the number was 481,519. The previous record from the spring and summer surges was at the end of July with 471,230 cases.
The U.S. has blown past the earlier records by 6.7 percent.
At the latest week’s pace, an American tests positive for COVID-19 every 1.2 seconds and dies from the disease every minute and 47 seconds.

SUNY students must provide COVID-19 negative test before leaving for Thanksgiving break
State universities in New York announced Wednesday that students must provide a negative COVID-19 test before leaving campus for Thanksgiving break, according to a statement.
All students in over 64 of SUNY’s colleges and universities, which is more than 140,000 students, must receive a negative test result within 10 days of leaving. Schools are required to submit a plan to test all of their on-campus students within that window by Nov. 5.
“By requiring all students to test negative before leaving, we are implementing a smart, sensible policy that protects students’ families and hometown communities and drastically reduces the chances of COVID-19 community spread,” said SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras.
Most SUNY schools will shut down residential facilities after Thanksgiving break and shift to remote learning.
Wisconsin reports worst day of pandemic yet with 64 deaths
Wisconsin reported its most dismal coronavirus numbers yet Tuesday as state health officials urged residents to leave home only when absolutely necessary and warned the crisis would continue escalating.
The state Department of Health Services reported 5,262 new cases and 64 deaths Tuesday, both records far above any previous daily counts. The death toll now stands at 1,852.
There were 1,385 people hospitalized due to the virus in Wisconsin, including 339 in intensive care units. Both were all-time highs. Hospitalizations have seen rapid, unimpeded growth for the last five weeks, straining short-staffed health care systems across the state.
“This is no longer a slow-motion disaster,” said Gregory Poland, director of the vaccine research group at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “This is a disaster in warp speed. And it’s maddening to me as a physician because a whole lot of people have died and are dying.”

Dodgers’ Justin Turner left World Series Game 6 with positive COVID test
Minutes after the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their first World Series title since 1988, Major League Baseball announced that third baseman Justin Turner had tested positive for COVID-19.
Fox broke the news on the postgame show following the Dodgers 3-1 win in Game 6 on Tuesday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and Turner’s positive test was confirmed by commissioner Rob Manfred.
“Obviously we’re concerned when any of our players test positive,” Manfred said. “We learned during the game. He was immediately isolated to prevent spread.”
MLB had not reported a positive test in 57 days, and there was a soft bubble in place for the World Series.

Hawaii to allow visitors from Japan with negative tests starting Nov. 6
Starting Nov. 6, Hawaii will allow visitors from Japan to bypass the state’s 14-day quarantine requirement if they test negative for the coronavirus within 72 hours of departing for the islands.
But Japanese travelers will still have to spend two weeks in quarantine upon returning home, which will likely limit the number of people taking advantage of the plan.
Hawaii earlier this month implemented a similar testing program for travelers from other parts of the U.S. Hawaii’s tourism-dependent economy gets more travelers from Japan than any other foreign country. Before the pandemic, the state would welcome about 5,000 visitors from Japan daily. Those numbers have dwindled to almost none.

NBA union head unsure about season’s potential start in December
With the NBA’s owners proposing to start next season around Christmas, should the players view it as an early holiday present? Or would they like to return the gift?
“I don’t know what I think yet,” Michele Roberts, the executive director of the National Basketball Players Association, told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday. “We are in the throes of discussing it and in the throes of evaluating what it means in terms of the revenue-related issues that have been raised. Frankly, we’re also spending some time trying to get information on what this means in respect to player health.”
Some of that information varies by team.
The NBA Finals ended on Oct. 11, leaving the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat with just over two months to recover before the proposed start of next season. But eight teams have not played since the NBA suspended the 2019-20 season on March 11 because of the coronavirus outbreak. After the NBA resumed at the quarantined campus near Orlando, six more teams ended their season by mid-August and another eight by late August.

White House science office lists ‘ending the COVID-19 pandemic’ as accomplishment
The White House’s science policy office on Tuesday listed “ending the COVID-19 pandemic” among the Trump administration’s first-term accomplishments, as the U.S. breaks records for new coronavirus cases daily.
A press release from the Office of Science and Technology Policy lists the “decisive actions to engage scientists and health professionals in academia, industry, and government to understand, treat, and defeat the disease” as a success.
However, the disease has not been defeated, and the White House has signaled they are not going to be able to control it before a vaccine is available.
The U.S. has reported 489,769 COVID-19 cases in the last week, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. It’s another record high since July when the nation saw a peak in cases.

Moving during COVID-19 pandemic could come with a massive pay cut
Though workers may no longer need to put up with tight spaces and high costs to land top work opportunities because of the pandemic, moving from the nation’s hottest job markets could cost them as much as 30%, according to new research Glassdoor shared exclusively with USA TODAY.
Whether they are decamping for a new job or signing on remotely for their current company, where employees clock in will increasingly determine how much they take home, Glassdoor chief economist Andrew Chamberlain told USA TODAY.
“Traditionally, wages almost never fall, but we are in an environment where I am basically predicting that wages will fall for a lot of jobs,” Chamberlain said. “The reason wages never fall is that workers never do things like this. They never pick up and move to radically different cities en masse.”

All hail Andy Reid, the NFL’s most quotable coach
Tumblr media
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
He’s given us some infinite wisdom on coaching, Mozart, cheeseburgers, and more over the years.
Andy Reid won his first-ever Super Bowl as a head coach when his Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers. Reid, who has been a head coach since 1999, entered the game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami as the NFL’s winningest head coach without a Lombardi Trophy. A win in Super Bowl 54 completed his impressive coaching legacy.
Reid is known for his innovation on offense, most recently with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ high-powered offense. But coaching styles aside, the man nicknamed “Big Red” is also known for his big personality.
With that comes a lot of great quotes from him throughout the years. These are just a few of his greatest hits.
Rei has offered a lot of insightful wisdom in his years of coaching.
Reid is one of the longest-tenured, and most respected, coaches in the NFL. He started his head coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999. He was then hired by the Chiefs in 2013 after the Eagles moved on from Reid following the 2012 season.
After his first season in Kansas City, he gave some advice to prospective coaches.
“Respecting people is an important part of life whether it’s the person doing janitorial work or the person above you,” Reid said, via the Associated Press. “It doesn’t matter who you are, I’m going to respect you.”
He’s expressed that sentiment other times, too, including after the Super Bowl win:
Andy Reid on reflecting on the last 30 years: “I’ll tell you, it’s awesome. I’m not sure it’s completely settled in… we all know that it’s not a one-man show. It takes a team together. Not just the players, not just the coaches. Everybody."
— Arrowhead Pride (@ArrowheadPride) February 3, 2020
And for those who might be getting older and need to be composed in big moments — like the 61-year-old Reid — he had a PSA about heart health:
“My heart’s racing. I’m getting older, can’t let it race too fast.” Andy Reid with the quote of the night!
— Liz Gonzales (@TheLizGonzales) February 3, 2020
He’s always ready with a great one-liner, too.
The morning after winning the Super Bowl, Reid was asked if he slept with the Lombardi Trophy. He responded with a shoutout to his wife, which probably would have been a lot creepier if it was anyone other than Reid saying it:
Reid: "I didn't spend the night with the trophy. I spent it with my trophy wife."
— Adam Teicher (@adamteicher) February 3, 2020
Reid and his wife, Tammy, have been married for 38 years. Goals!
He’s also had some pretty good quips about football. Now I’m not exactly sure what a tiddlywink contest is exactly, but it’s apparently not something you want to do during a football game:
Andy Reid quote of the day, in any context: "We're not in a tiddlywink contest. There's a certain amount of pressure that comes with the sport."
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) November 28, 2018
As Reid and other head coaches know, not every game will be flawless. After Kansas City won a sloppy game against the Detroit Lions in Week 4 of the 2019 season, Reid said “not all of Mozart’s paintings were perfect” because, sure?
How bout those Chiefs! pic.twitter.com/qv7wq28BuT
— Kansas City Chiefs (@Chiefs) September 29, 2019
This other football quote from him about a four-point stance really needs no comment:
Favorite no-context needed quote from Andy Reid this morning: "You don’t come out of the womb in a four-point stance. Well, you kind of do. But you don’t stay there very long." Btw, this was also the second time he said womb at the coaches breakfast.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) March 26, 2019
He also once compared himself, unfavorably, to Von Miller:
Andy Reid on @VonMiller’s athleticism: “He can bear-crawl faster than I can run.”
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) October 24, 2018
I’d like to see this race happen in real life, just to be sure this is correct.
The man really loves his cheeseburgers, and talks about this love A LOT.
After the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win, Reid said he was ready to “get the biggest cheeseburger you’ve ever seen ... might be a double.”
Andy Reid's going to get the biggest cheeseburger he can find, might make it a double pic.twitter.com/BjTeYvtPsb
— CJ Fogler (@cjzero) February 3, 2020
He expanded further on his cheeseburger plans at his postgame presser, adding that he was going to get one with extra cheese:
It’s cheeseburger time for Andy Reid. pic.twitter.com/IOblwkIDxU
— USA TODAY Sports (@usatodaysports) February 3, 2020
Following up big wins with cheeseburgers is kind of Reid’s thing. It’s how he celebrated the Chiefs’ AFC Championship victory over the Tennessee Titans:
“I had a cheeseburger and went to bed.” - (Classic) Andy Reid on how he celebrated last night.
— BJ Kissel (@ChiefsReporter) January 20, 2020
He doesn’t just crave burgers after games — he wants them before games, too:
#Chiefs coach Andy Reid gets to work around 4:30 am for a noon home game, and he wants a hamburger. pic.twitter.com/E2g4Rzgt2y
— BJ Kissel (@ChiefsReporter) December 7, 2018
Reid knows exactly how he likes his burgers. Via Arrowhead Pride, from 2015:
“I like it medium,” Reid said on 610 Sports (24 minute mark here). “It’s hard, I mean, you have to execute that thing the right way. You have to get it to where it’s perfect and juicy when you cut it open but not raw. Then a nice slice of good, fresh Vidalia onion on it. Some mayo and ketchup. A little squirt of mustard but not too much. Pickles, lettuce and tomato and I’m ready to roll. The bun becomes very important. To put all that together and make it perfect, there’s some time involved. That’s where it comes in. You practice, you get it right and then when you bite into it baby, it’s ecstasy right there, so that’s like a good play.”
Speaking of food, Reid often discusses his love for various cuisines.
In the week leading up to Super Bowl 54, Reid compared having his nine grandchildren to ... wait for it ... sweet and sour pork:
A wise man once said that grandchildren are kind of like sweet and sour pork. pic.twitter.com/4U7yB0ZSOd
— Arrowhead Pride (@ArrowheadPride) January 30, 2020
“Those nine grandkids are awesome. They make you feel young, and at the same time, they make you feel old. It’s kind of like sweet and sour pork.”
Seeing a pattern here? Reid is a big red meat guy, and as someone who probably eats more red meat on a regular basis than a human should, I really appreciate this about him.
On a related note, please know that Reid apparently once ordered three steaks at one sitting. In 2017, five years after Reid had coached in Philadelphia, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said Reid did it the first time the two met at dinner:
Lurie says the first time he went out to dinner with Andy Reid, Reid ordered 3 steaks at once #Eagles
— Eliot Shorr-Parks (@EliotShorrParks) September 7, 2017
A regional VP of Del Frisco’s steakhouse, Rich Furino, amazingly confirmed the story to NBC Philadelphia:
“Basically, when the server comes up and gives their speel, they describe the different cuts of meat, flavor profiles, and textures, he described them to Andy and said, ‘Would you like the ribeye, the New York strip, or the filet mignon?’” Furino said on a radio appearance. “And Andy said, ‘Yes.’ Like yes to all three. That’s kind of how it got started. They put all three in front of him. He put down about 90% of them.”
Reid is officially my hero after reading this story. As for the head coach’s side of the story, he claims he doesn’t remember doing it, but will take credit for it anyway:
“That’s what he said? He’s too funny,” Reid said on a podcast with Adam Schefter. “Well, I might have. It might have been for Joe, Jeffrey, and Andy. Other than that, I don’t remember ordering three steaks. I’ll take credit for it though.”
Years before that, he put down a 40-ounce steak in 19 minutes when he and current NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci were assistants with the Green Bay Packers.
“When we were rooming together at Green Bay, our wives weren't moved there yet, so we’d go out to eat every night,” Mariucci said on the Rich Eisen show in 2015. “We went to this one place, this Prime Quarters, a steak place, and if you could eat a 40-ounce steak and the salad, and garlic bread, and other stuff around it — if you could eat it under an hour, you get your next meal free, and you get your picture on the wall with a big bib, and that baker’s hat or whatever it is. Andy finished his meal in 19 minutes, and I finished mine in 30 and we are still on the wall over there at that restaurant.”
Amazingly, that photo exists on Twitter:
As promised, @SteveMariucci photo with @Chiefs HC Andy Reid after they destroyed 40oz steaks when they both were @packers assistants. pic.twitter.com/VLMUkGWMBz
— Rich Eisen Show (@RichEisenShow) December 6, 2016
He doesn’t exclusively just eat or talk about red meat, though.
Before his 2019 Super Bowl-winning season with the Chiefs, Reid’s biggest offseason accomplishment was eating chile relleno, which is a Mexican dish:
Andy Reid was asked if he did anything fun or exotic this offseason: “I attacked a couple Chile rellenos.”
— Jeff Darlington (@JeffDarlington) July 23, 2019
In 2013 when Peyton Manning was still in the league, Reid compared what Manning can do in football with what Reid can do at a buffet.
youtube
“I would tell you he’s talented. There’s talent. You and I could do this at a buffet, but he does it on the football field, and there’s some athletic ability that takes place there.”
Same, Andy. Same.
How he eats Snickers bars is especially innovative, just like his schemes:
More Andy Reid being Andy Reid: 'It's like a Snickers bar in the freezer, right? I mean, it's treasured.' #Chiefs #NFL
— Sean Keeler (@SeanKeeler) June 5, 2014
Who doesn’t want to try that now?
It’s really hard not to love a coach who can crank out one-liners like these. He’s not going anywhere, and neither are the Chiefs, so expect more of the ever-quotable Andy Reid in the future.
