I know that man has hurt you but she say if you don't feel comfortable then you can avoid him but if you plan to work with him then you need to talk to him about this.

I know I know! It sucks I feel this way and I get why it's happening... it's just that I'm not comfortable around that guy or anyone being with him, it's understandable and logical that he has to be here.

But I can't say I can't forget it, he was there and he perform that surgery on me... so even if it does make sense logically, I sure can't help but feel uncomfortable.

Farscape rewatch - Green Eyed Monster, 3x08

You know something this ep made me think of? How eternally grateful I am to Farscape for not creating any stupid contrived love triangles. There is no one for Aeryn but John, and there is no one for John but Aeryn. They have plenty to overcome and deal with in their different lives and traumas without adding contrived, soapy complications to the mix.

Because there is, of course, a triangle here. But not the silly, standard Crais-John-Aeryn one you would imagine. No, the 'third' in the triangle is Talyn, the living ship (I confess to never warming up to erratic, adolescent Talyn, but in the final count, he is yet another victim of forces outside of his control: he has been created unstable due to PK experimentation). It is Talyn who is sticking spokes in the wheels of true love (yes, a bizarre metaphor, I know). Talyn, whose reaction is really that of a spoiled adolescent whose Mommy picked up with a man he doesn't like instead of Dad (I think Crais' own, not too happy feelings about John, sort of leaked and amplified into Talyn, who read them through haze of adolescence and jealousy and paranoid instability). Any hint of triangles on FS was never soapy but about much larger, different things. Stark's interest in Aeryn was displacement for Zhaan, was because he almost made her be worth things because Zhaan died for her. Grayza to John was rape. Chiana with Jothee was about rebellion and inability to commit and Chiana being young and wild. Crais' interest in Aeryn was unspoken and about a kinship (through Talyn) etc etc etc. And yes, John is vulnerable to Talyn's manipulation, the way he never is, except with Aeryn. And the recent attacks on his psychic selfhood hadn't helped. But oh, the way he slumps in relief, as if he can breathe again, when he finds out the truth. And I love that Aeryn tells him, matter of factly, that she had never been with Crais, and the enormity of his quiet ‘yes, it does [matter].’

Of course it does. Just look how his eyes look as if he is dying when he first sees the doctored vid.

It is even worse because it’s Crais, someone who hunted and tormented and tortured him. It’s even worse than when, in S4, Aeryn brings Scorpy on board (even though then she didn’t have a choice), a feeling of betrayal. And the awesome if mushy, very mushy tag, when he tells her she is his constant and he always names the reference star after her. You can tell she is afraid to hope for happiness but she does, anyway.  (And it ends very badly eventually.)

Of course, the other thing I love in Farscape is pace. Almost any other show, it would have taken the characters 10 eps to figure out that this was a frame-up job. Not here. Bam. Dealt with. At speed intelligent people would. Farscape never dragged (but never felt crammed either. It was perfectly paced). I really do not care for Talyn's red design. Very discordant. Very PK and in character, but I bet living there, even if it didn't bother Aeryn and Crais who are used to PK red, really did create a dissonance. Oh, what else. I love that Aeryn and John have an ugly fight there, early, but he still wants to be there when she receives the implant (but Talyn prevents him).

I love that Aeryn now loves him enough to actually try to talk things out. I love that she admits she needs him (when trying to convince Talyn.)

And her plague speech? My heart!

Of course, such daring openness, such opening up to love but also to hurt, will lead to devastation in IP. I also love Rygel and Stark together. Especially Stark. If for nothing else, than for smacking Rygel. YES. And he can be clever and plan-full when push comes to shove. Oh, and Crichton has a Lymond-like dislike of people outside the small circle calling him by his first name (he snaps at Crais not to call him John). His name=his identity=intimacy=selfhood. This is not the trusting John of S1, and he will never, ever trust and like Crais: once you’ve been hunted and tortured by someone, I think that person is permanently off-limits insofar as tolerance goes. PS My favorite nonshippy moment.

This comment by John to Crais is so encompassing of how far John has come and not in a hero’s arc kind of way.

PPS It’s so telling the moment there were no two of them, Aeryn was just able to forget about it and fall into Talyn John’s arms. God, there was never a good way out, was there?

Kubo Mitsurou's episode commentary

Episode 12. Part 2.

　Yamamoto-director told me that she wanted to show Yuuri, for whom Victor was the goal for longer than half of his life, challenging himself to skate a program with the same difficulty as Victor's program, and I agreed. Yuuri got the best score and in FS only, he managed to beat Yurio - we planned this development from the very beginning. In the end, we thought that if the ending wasn't too perfect then there would still be a future [for this story], so keeping that in mind to not make the ending too perfect, we decided that Yurio would win, but he wouldn't be completely satisfied with his result.

　I think Victor hugs Yurio before Yurio's FS, not because he wanted a shoulder to cry on because of Yuuri's retirement or to ask Yurio to do something, but because he wanted to cheer Yurio on, so Yurio would skate his best performance. Perhaps it was simply something like "Go, do your best and come back". It's an action that can't be explained by logic.

This comment was even more controversial than the infamous "the rings are for club members" comment from ep. 10. So much so, that it has actually been changed. These comments were first published in Pash! (12/2016 and 03/2017) and then collected together in Pash! fanbook.

This is the fanbook version and the main change is that this comment sounds like somebody's personal opinion: I think~, Perhaps~… The first version was just a statement of facts:

"I drew the scene when Victor hugs Yurio before Yurio's FS as an expression of Victor wanting to cheer Yurio on, so Yurio would skate his best performance, a simple "Go, do your best and come back", not because he wanted a shoulder to cry on because of Yuuri's retirement or to ask Yurio to do something. [I drew this scene] because so far in the story we haven't seen a lot of Victor cheering Yurio on. It's an action that can't be explained by logic."

This topic goes even further, because in commentary to ep. 12 included in the DVD/Blu-ray edition, Yuuri's and Yurio's VAs talk about this scene as if Victor was indeed asking Yurio to stop Yuuri from retiring and Mitsurou didn't comment on that at all hehe… ✨

In my personal opinion, this scene is directed in a way that makes you feel Victor is doing this on purpose to influence Yurio. We again can't see his face, there is that small smile, which can be easily read as "Yurio took the bait ;)" and the hug itself also seems not like a "good luck" hug, but a hug given by somebody who's in pain… Like we can see that Victor first just hugs Yurio and then leans on him more, which imo makes it very emotional.

Who knows, maybe Sayo and Mitsurou simply had different ideas for this scene~

op 1: KICK BACK tbh wasnt a massive fan of the song when i came out but its grown on me w the full context & lyrics it slayed idc NOW THE VISUALS ... filled me w euphoria when i first saw it have (re)watched half the fucking movies referenced ONLY BC MIDTERMS WAS BEATING MY ASS .. so creative and fun and dynamic and hectic as fuck the timing and directing on this is like incomprehensibly good. its funny asf and has such beautiful lively enviornments and lighting and such a cohesive feel despite how batshit everything is NO ONE HAS TALKED ABT THE SHOT W THE MOUNTAINS AND SKY AND THE BULLETS. AM I THE ONLY OEN WHOSE INSANE ABT THAT ONE. so so beautiful literally a look into the minds of fujimoto and the ani staff and a gift upon this earth. 10/10

ed 1: SUCH A GOOD SONG !!!!!!! fit super well w the end of the first ep & is just genuinely such a banger. credits roll was smart for the airing of the actual ep, helped me take in the whole ep and appreciate the best parts of it. the mv released on mappas channel is rly solid considering it just recycled scenes from the actual ep !! love first half of the vid + the zoom in on pochitas tail the most ofc !! 6/10 bc the song is a banger but its just no as obsessable bc of the lack of og visuals :(

ed 2: GORGEOUSSS VISUALS tho it doesn’t feel v well aligned w the tone of csm BUT STILL !!!! song aligns super well w the visuals atleast & i love love the look of the animation, the environments especially are so beautiful 😭 i think the denji falling into the sky scene were especially well timed w the music and made me v emo about his character. esp love the hayakawa fam focus and how power is literally the one who PULLS HIM BACK DOWN .. beloveds 7.5/10 ok i like it picasso

ed 3: FAVE SONG its so good. so much to say abt this one rapid change of scene linework shading color sfx is fucking insane each unique aes makes me physically ill its so good. so gripping the TRANSITION from makima goddess to hayakawa fam W THE DOOR. AND THE TRAUMA. fave part is the hayakawa family shots towards the end that combined w the lyrics perfectly encapsulates what csm is thematically to me. goretastic insanity used as a means of making the intensely human obviously doomed connections at the heart of the story that much more impactful. fully embraces the best parts of csm and rips my heart out all in the course of 90 seconds 10/10 idc idc

ed 4: POWAAA !!!! song is such a fucking banger i mean it this shit has had me dancing for weeks BUT THE VISUALS .... so dynamic and insane love how they played dress up w her and also made sure the audience knew she was a lil freak. theres so much to love and appreciate about the visuals and how fucking sick the movements are and the colors but truly this ones just vibes. 9/10

ed 5: fs my FAVE of all the ones currently out (i think this is the most popular opinion lmao) but the combination of the frantic, very dense visuals and a rly cool fast paced song scratched smth in my brain. so much inspiration to dig through and BEAUTIFUL use of colors, lighting, and effects animation omg. Those shots of himeno are stapled on the inside of my eyelids i love them. so many art references w/ a great selection to specifically represent the chaos of the eternity devil love the use of optical illusions (ONCE AGAIN W THE LIGHTING !!!) and use of timing to create a jarring effect (horses running in slo mo (same w some shots of the chs) immediately being contrasted w rapid movement/blinking of eyes, fireworks, shots of the sky w the clouds racing across) as well as the rapid changing of one shot to another is so insane. another detail i love is that it has a almost collage like look bc each background/piece of ch or effects animation has dif linework, uses dif brushes, as well very unique lighting and shading. also so so much to dissect w how it foreshadows later events (if u start looking there are like. 4 dif instances of guns in this bitch holy fuck) and the themes of the work as a whole but i have classes a life etc that will have to wait til winter break. so genuinely obsessed w this one it was literally the one that convinced me (most obnoxious csm fan) that mappa knows exactly what theyre doing and are likely making the actual anime the way they are as a deliberate commitment to make it even more insane later down the line. i am a drastic rapid tonal shifts enjoyer i love this ed 10/10 its my gf

ed 6: not a massive fan of the visuals or the song for this one :( the instrumental of the song felt kinda jarring after the sequence of denji jumping into the eternity devils mouth, i was def expecting a dif kind of vibe. the visuals were cool, but i don't feel like the static characters were used particularly well. some of the transitions and “camera” movements also rly didn't feel very well suited to the cuts they were in. my fave part was the settings and backgrounds, especially the textures and the way the movement “through” the bgs were done, tho the 5th ed had a very similar concept and i think executed it better. kind of disappointing with how much i enjoyed the prev eds, but it was still enjoyable to watch and analyze how they constructed the visuals. 4/10 bc i respect what they were trying to do i just dont think they had the time to develop a unique vision

I have been dash pressured into watching Business Proposal.

On to ep 2 a.k.a 'I, E.T.' In that episode, Moya (the Leviathan ship on which our heroes travel) cannot muffle the Peacekeeper beacon installed which leads the crew to land Moya on a planet and have John, Aeryn and D'Argo go to look for 'chlorium' an element which they need to dull Moya's pain when they remove the beacon. This is one of the lesser FS eps. In fact, if I compiled my least favorite 10 FS eps, this would be on it. But there are still so many things to like about it. You know what strikes me about this (the same way Premiere struck me. I just can't help it). How kind Crichton is. Because part of his arc in the show is his losing this, acquiring a hard edge that has been beaten into him. But the thing is, Crichton is originally, innately, a gentle person. And he acquires a lot by the end of Farscape, he does amazing things, but he loses this innocence, this gentleness piece by piece, turning into this haunted wreck, someone hard, brittle, dark. His clothes are so symbolic of it: as the seasons progress he acquires more and more PK gear and by S4 he looks out of place in 'earth' clothes. PK leather becomes his armor. He loses this openness. (In fact, one of the things I adore about Peacekeeper Wars the most, is that through the birth of his son, Crichton recovers the joy and innocence and the wonder that he's lost through the years - @mousieta - I actually think it goes with your point about gender reversal - this is the sort of rejuvenation through having a child that stories normally give to women, not men.) But here, it's still on display. He hadn't lost it. The world hasn't been truly horrible to him yet. I think of the moment in the kitchen of the alien lady where he waves her weapon at her and then he realizes what he is doing and he is horrified and he gives the weapon back to her, so she can hold it against him if she wants. Oh, John. I also love Aeryn in this one. She slowly discovers her humanity, baby steps. She snipes back and forth at D'Argo, but it's acknowledging him as a person (however irritating), she is briefly concerned for Zhaan's pain. And how good is the show about maintaining John/Aeryn connection through little things.  Love the bit when Moya does the crash landing and they fall on each other: they automatically stand together. Or when they say the sentence in unison and just glare at each other. And I love that Crichton refuses to leave without D'Argo. At that point it's not because D'Argo is a friend: they don't know each other well and like each other even less. But because Crichton cannot leave a shipmate behind. And we see bonds between the crew begin to build: Not just Aeryn and Zhaan but we have Rygel be concerned for her (btw, how awesome is it to have Rygel bite a chunk of Aeryn's arm off. Not your average muppet). Favorite little bit: Crichton telling Aeryn that the planet they have landed on reminds him of Lousiana. Or Dagoba, where Yoda lives. And explains that Yoda is a little green guy who trains warriors and Aeryn takes it in matter-of-factly and you see him smile. Also, I do like the alien concept overturn: Crichton is the alien here.

Part 5.

Q: Do you have any interesting stories about voice over recordings?

Every time, the voice actors were giving better performances than we could have expected, so sometimes we had to change the animation to better match it with the voice overs. We only changed small details, but I must admit it wasn't easy. When the voice actors' performance is very intense, it's easy to understand the characters - the character speaks their lines and that's all they need to exist. But a more exquisite/delicate performance is what determines whether you can feel that the characters are real or not. Are they "characters that only exist in this anime" or can you feel that they "are really there" - it all depends on voice acting.

Q: Which scene was especially memorable to you?

While working on Yuri!!!, the scene that made me feel that "this is going to be an amazing show" particularly strongly, was the scene of Victor skating in ep 1. In animation, you have to explain the characters through actions and in figure skating, it is the skating performance that needs to express everything there is to be expressed - while working on this scene I had in mind both these principles. When I was editing this scene, and also the whole ep 1, I became convinced that "this is going to be a film no-one has seen before". Of course, I had a lot of faith in this project from the very beginning, but when this 20min10s-long film was created I really felt that we were working on something absolutely new, something that has never been done before.

Q: At the very end of the last episode we see the "See you NEXT LEVEL" text.

It's because we wanted to end the series with an element of "hope" to keep on going forward. Well, when we started working on the project we couldn't really get enough money for the budget and there wasn't any indication that we would be able to work on any sort of continuation (laugh). That's why we decided very early on that we wanted to end the series like this, so we also can move on to the "NEXT LEVEL" [it's not really clear if she meant they hoped they would be able to work on continuation anyway or the next level was their personal next level, as in they wanted to move on to different projects]. But before we reached the "NEXT LEVEL" ending, in the story Yuuri has grown as a person in a way we couldn't have imagined, and because of that he has been changing. Especially the jumps in his FS changed more than any other characters' from the show. This is because, as Yuuri has been growing as a person throughout the show, there were many moments when he made us feel that: "now is when I want to challenge myself".

Q: What are you plans for the future?

Right now we are planning the production of the movie. While working on final editing of episode 10, suddenly an idea for this new project came to me, without any context. I think it's going to be quite an epic story (laugh).

Q: And lastly, a message for the fans please!

Yuri!!! on ICE finished airing so we are in off-season now, but in real-life figure skating the Olympic season has just begun! It's a very dramatic season that only happens once every 4 years, so please watch real-life competitions. I'm going to keep on working hard towards the NEXT LEVEL while getting my imagination inspired by figure skating and using this imagination to make anime!!!

wow, I´m disappointed ngl. The suit was dope, all the Bradley scenes were great but the rest was just not good. Sam/Bucky/Walker got beat up by amateuers, Sharon is just evil now, Karli/FS were underwhelming the whole season, Walker tried to kill Sam/Bucky in ep.5 and they work with him right away anyway including funny banter?! Bucky/Yori did not pay off emotinally at all and where was sweet, helpful Torres? I wasn´t so keen on a 2. season but now I hope they get new writers and try again tbh

i feel you darling. it was disappointing to me as well, and i agree with a lot of what you’re saying here.

i’ll hold that it’s a bit of a time issue, and plot points were forced to be shifted around due to cutting out the major biological warfare/disease plot, but it was still a mediocre finale for all other characters but sam. sam and the bradleys, they were wonderful and i loved them. i do hope that is not the last we see of isaiah and elijah in sam’s orbit. 

yori! i was hoping for something more there as well, but... the scene was set up so that it looked like bucky just left him there after telling him? we don’t know what else happened in there, and i know that was just to get him to louisiana quicker, but the pacing of that arc felt a little off especially because it was important enough to warrant a flashback in show. i don’t know.

torres! torres, the new falcon, who wasn’t even called that by name. i think that might be a setup for season 2, but i do wish we’d had more of him this season. writers said that if the season had been extended to 10 episodes, we’d have had more of him. looks like there just wasn’t time. i dearly hope he’s in ca4. 

and i do know that it is common principle for tv shows to have new writers if not every episode/every few episodes then every season, so i hope that marvel follows convention. would not be surprised, however, to see spellman still in charge. 

however, i guess another take you could consider here, that i think we all know my position on, is that because sam is the main character of the show (lol) he got his rightfully sam-centric ending. which is true to some parts, the ending was sam-centric, but... you know. 

i don’t know. this turned out a lot longer than i thought it would. feel free to agree, disagree, whatever. just my thoughts.

16: fav episode uhhhhhh 🧎 gosh idk if I can pick one. I’ve been journaling reactions/ep reviews as I go and have a handful or so of 10/10s

ig the first ep that comes to mind is awesome-o. I’ve enjoyed every ep that features butters and cartman’s dynamic, and it’s SO GREAT to not only see butters win for once, but cartman had to deal w the consequences of his actions THE WHOLE EPISODE, and he didn’t even come out on top in the end. quality ep fs

other eps that deserve a shout bc I LOVE them: lil crime stoppers, casa bonita, the jeffersons, free willxyz, cartoon wars 1 & 2, tsst, go god go pts 1 & 2, cartman sucks, lice capades, le petit tourette, imaginationland 1-3, major boobage, super fun time, breast cancer show ever, the ungroundable, the coon, dead celebrities, butters bottom bitch, w.t.f., and pee

obviously I’m not gonna go into detail for every single one of these, and for the record I didn’t categorize all of these as 10/10s in my journal lol. I’m also missing eps from s 1-5 bc I only started writing down my reviews at s 6 hah I have to go back and rewatch to give them scores

23: the first ep I watched was actually 3x01, rainforest shmainforest! instead of going straight to hbo max I used a free acc on comedy central to try out a few episodes, and they don’t have the full series, so I started in s 3 😌

when Alder said “you always had a soft spot for orphans” to Anacostia, i feel she’s implying there was another specific orphan that Anacostia was soft towards and now I wanna know what that story is,,, is it a fellow witch? another student she failed before??

Anacostia is probably around her mid-thirties, that means that she’s had a lot of recruits and cadets over the years. She was probably deployed for a while, before becoming a drill sergeant (still don’t really know how US armed forces work though, so maybe I’m wrong) so she’s possibly been a training officer at FS for what 7-10 years? 

It’s also very possible that a lot of the recruits are orphans (some with only one missing parent, but some orphans of both). So, I guess, being an orphan herself, and having grown up into the military and on that same base she’s training at now, she may have been more lenient and willing to excuse challenging or even devious behaviour in children she connected the most with. Like with Raelle, for example.

I don’t think, then, that Alder was referring to a particular case, but a general attitude Anacostia displays towards a certain type of cadet. That sentence was short, cold and harsh, yes. But I interpreted it as having a deeper meaning along the lines of:

“You keep doing this thing where you connect with orphans, ok, and I let you do it, because I care about you. But this girl is our enemy and you should stay in your place and do what I tell you.”

All in all, even if I’m sure in part it’s true, I don’t think Anacostia’s confession of Scylla’s remorse had too much to do with the fact that she’s an orphan. I do think Anacostia cares about all recruits (as shown in ep. 8) and even if she’s a little more lenient with orphans, she knows she’s been sending cadets to their deaths for years now and she knows they’re young, and they’re scared and they made mistakes.
