the ground thinly covered with snow – fine frosty morning F33 ½° inside at 9 5 and F31° 2 or 3 minutes afterwards outside – sun out – breakfast at 9 10 in about ½ hour – came upstairs intending to write to Lady S- but Mr. Barber junior came for leave to shoot a hare close to the house – gave it – then long political talk – he and his father for taking off the corn-duty – full of the arguments of Mr. Gregg of Manchester – I combated them – perhaps what I said made some impression? he went away at 11 ¾ - then had Booth till he dined in the servants’ hall but did not go to dinner till 1 -  then had him again afterwards till 2 ½ - about the steam engine chimney – and about wood to be ordered at Harrisons’ at Leeds – B- and Robert Norton to go by the Red Rover at 7 am. tomorrow – the engineer had proposed a small creative measure to the present flue – to round off the angle at the foot of the present descent from the fire place into the mine flue, and the flue (the mine) to be contracted from 3 to 1 ft. at the entrance into the mine-shaft – told B- it might be done – it would mend the draft, but I had belief that it would make it as good as it ought to be – but it should be done in order to get us on to longer days and fine weather and rid us of engineer, and the whole tribe of Lowmoor people – then calculated the expense of doing the job as we talked of yesterday – the boiler would be taken up and reset for £10 – the mine walled arched with brick labour at 2/6 per linear yard (2ft. wide and 3ft. high to the spring of the arch – and 3ft. 6in. high to crown of arch) and 1/. per yard more would pay for pulling up the old materials and getting them to the place where wanted and there would be bricks and materials enough –

Holt told B- he would raise the chimney – the engineer said it would not want raising – nous verrons – told B- I should not say much about it; but if the draft not good enough, my present mind was to do the job right (as we settled it yesterday) in May or thereabouts – but sick of talking of it – told B- who often wearies me, that at times I wished or almost wished to see or hear no more of engine or anything belonging to it, and that I was obliged to people who never named it – SW. in the house all today settling A-‘s accounts and she took him my Rent book and cash ditto just before she drove off (in the carriage) to Cliff hill at 3 5 – I left B- at 2 ½ - then had A- a few minutes and then till 3 ¼ wrote all the above of today – then wrote 3pp. of ½ sheet to Lady Stuart till Mr. Harper came at 5 10 – with him till 6 ¼ - explained about the hall stairs after having left him with Robert for explanation which I soon found had not been too explicit – H- agrees it would be a good job, and said the moving the stairs would be done for ten pounds and he himself would do it – he made it out that a glass as good as plate glass would come in at 14/. per each compartment – 3 in each wind .:. the 2 windows = 6x14/. = £4.4.0 begged H- to order the glass from near Newcastle upon Tyne, as immediately as possible – dinner at 6 20 – A- read French – coffee – wrote the last 7 lines till 9 ¼ - Letter tonight 3pp. and ends from Madame de Bourke (Paris) – she could not make out why she had received my last letter thro’ the foreign office alias thro’ Laffitte (affranchie) while that thro’ Mr. Byng had arrived part poste heavily charged – she thought this must have happened thro’ some mistake of the person who put my letter direct to Mr. Byng into the Post office – I must explain the Byng affair – he unwilling to send my letter to Lord Granvilles’ bag, had put into the post! Reiterated thanks for the shawl – reading the newspaper (morning Herald) till 10 ¾ at which hour came upstairs and found F32° inside and F21° outside at 11 10 pm and fine moonlight night
