TS: Interlude - Tera
FIRST | I-1 | SECOND
Triggers: Gunshot, blood
The blonde is gorgeous by any stretch of the imagination. It’s been commented on all her life: she looks like a model or an actress, all perfectly maintained blonde hair trailing over her shoulder, and curves to make any man die happy. She’s waiting in a booth at a dodgy little bar on the wrong side of town, out of place for her looks but otherwise seeming completely at home among the sorts of people who slit throats and sell children for a drop of cheap liquor.
She gets left alone, because most people are perfectly happy ogling her for afar, or more interested in the girl ingesting shots like candy at the bar across from a bartender with freckles like stars. This pleasant status quo is completely ruined when a pale skinned man-boy with long black hair – longer even than hers – saunters up to her.
“Want some company, beautiful?”
She looks up at him, revealing eyes that can best be described as cerulean, lined in heavy mascara and on point eyeliner. She doesn’t even bother checking him out before she looks back down at the cell phone in her hands. “No.”
“Excellent,” he says, and leans against the top of the booth seat across from her. She rolls her eyes; he thinks he caught wind of an exotic accent in her single word. “What’s a pretty thing like you doing alone in a place like this?”
“Minding my own business,” she says, tapping out a text. He knows he picked an accent now, British and charming. Two can play at that game, he thinks, and turns on the charm.
“You don’t know me yet, gorgeous, but you can call me Syrus.”
She sighs, flipping her phone closed. “I’ll say this once more, Syrus. Piss. Off.”
The grin he gives her is best described as a leer, and he steps closer to her.
It’s the wrong thing to do.
She draws a gun from her purse and fires once before he can react. No one else in the bar so much as looks over – it’s the sort of place where this is common, perhaps even anticipated. She aims at his knee, blows out his kneecap, and returns the weapon to its’ hiding place as she gets to her feet, watching as he falls to put most of his weight against the table she’s been sitting at. “What the fuck!” he cries.
She glances at the injury to see it already healing through the bloody hole in his slacks, and is unable to bring herself to feel any surprise. Trust Port Lyndon, she thinks, to be home to the most irritating supernaturals possible. “Don’t be such a baby, Syrus. No one likes a whiney vampire.”
“Problem, babe?” comes a new voice. Syrus’s eyes are watering from the pain of the accelerated healing, the bullet being expelled. The newcomer has light brown hair and fits in perfectly with the scenery, except for the arm he slings around the blonde’s neck. Her lip curls into a sneer as she stares down at Syrus, nothing but distaste in her gaze, or her voice when she speaks.
“Just the usual trash. Let’s get out of here.”

What Happened To TROS

There’s a show I watch on occasion called “Autopsy: The Last Hours Of...” featuring a medical examiner going over celebrity autopsy reports and explaining why the celeb died. (It’s on Reelz, in case you’re as morbid as I am.)
Many Reylos have gone over every statement uttered about the film and analyzed every bit of footage to see just what heck was going on with this movie. Based on what’s come out in the press I was about to pitch my own autopsy theories. But every day more comes out about TROS! Chris Terrio digging his hole deeper, Colin Trevorrow’s alleged “script” leaking on Reddit! As of writing, South Korea got the Art of TROS book first so images have been leaking all over the place.
Here are my takeaways at this point:
Problem #1: J.J. Abrams’s brand of filmmaking. Abrams is really good at fast-paced, fun-filled spectacle. He is also good at not explaining things, at interrupting every conversation with action/danger, and at forced, unearned moments that are more about winking at the audience than advancing the story/developing the characters. Case in point: Kirk and Spock acting out the Spock death scene from “Wrath of Khan” in “Into Darkness,” only with Kirk about to croak (he doesn’t). The movie did nothing to set them up as close friends. They were still sniping at each other the whole movie. So it’s unsurprising TROS also had all of those elements.
Problem #2: There was no plan. What’s come out since the film’s release seems to emphasize that they really had no clue how to wrap this thing up because nobody had a clue who these characters were or what their story means beyond Chris Terrio’s curious obsession with Luke and Leia. The audience attributed meaning based on what we got in TFA and TLJ but it seems like hardly anyone behind the scenes had any idea what that meaning was. They threw away George Lucas’s road map and decided to just keep driving until they got somewhere.
Problem #3: There was no time. When I was a kid, I’d see t.v. ads for Paul Masson wine starring the late Orson Welles. The ads’ tag line was always, “We will sell no wine before its time.” Bob Iger’s philosophy is “FTS, give me that movie yesterday!” He announced a new trilogy to start in May 2015 at the end of October 2012. That was less than three years. Recall that it took months to find a director and they ended up junking Michael Arndt’s screenplay, with J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan having to do a quickie re-write in late 2013-early 2014. Abrams was casting the film at the same time. He asked for more time but all Iger would do is move the release date to December 2015 because he’d promised shareholders it would be out that year. I felt that TFA seemed a little rushed and this explains why. J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio were officially running the show as of September 2017. Originally TROS was scheduled for May 2019 but again Abrams asked for more time and the film was bumped back to December 2019. Still, that’s only two years and two months. Twenty six months to figure out how to end a trilogy, end a nine-part series, and work around the unexpected death of one of its stars. Oh and do all of this while you hadn’t given Star Wars a thought in years along with a screenwriter whose knowledge is pretty wonky. Is it any wonder why the script sometimes felt like it was written at the last minute by college students pulling an all-nighter on speed? By comparison, George Lucas started writing the OT in 1973, three years before he shot ANH and four years before release. He started writing the PT in 1994, three years before he shot TPM and five years before it was released. Star Wars wasn’t based on a novel or a comic book. The whole saga had to be cooked up from scratch. It required more time and more thought.
Problem #4: They didn’t get the best closer. After TFA, Abrams didn’t worry about the long game for the trilogy because the original plan was to be one and done. He never had to think about Rey and Co. ever again...until Colin Trevorrow got the hook in June 2017. I don’t know if Kathleen Kennedy had anyone else in mind or not. But I am certain Abrams was either Iger’s or Walt Disney Motion Pictures head Alan Horn’s idea. Why him even if he admitted he’s not a good closer? It’s simple: TFA made $2 billion. With no plan, limited time, and a few years of not thinking Star Wars at all, he had to quickly wrap up a series, something by his own admission he’s not very good at.
Problem #5: Too many disruptions. George Lucas somehow managed to survive changing directors for each of the OT, having to let Gary Kurtz go, and the end of his marriage to Marcia Lucas, who just happened to also be the films’ editor. The ST had to contend with Michael Arndt, Colin Trevorrow, etc. getting fired and someone else having to step in and work from scratch. Rian Johnson seemed to be the only one able to get through production unscathed, only to get his film retconned because of the internet peanut gallery. Carrie Fisher unexpectedly died, forcing everyone to rack their brains on how they were going to finish this without her.
Problem #6: They were totally out of touch with what audiences liked about the ST. Before the arrival of Baby Yoda, Kylo Ren was the most searched Star Wars character. Yes, even more than any of the OT characters. While lots of people love Rey, they loved Kylo just as much if not a tiny bit more. He was the one descended from the legends of our youth: Han Solo and Princess Leia, Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala. It also helped that a highly-talented, charismatic actor played him. I think audiences were rooting for him but didn’t expect him to die. Even people I know who otherwise really liked or loved TROS thought they shouldn’t have killed him off.
Reylo was also the gas in the ST’s tank, not only as a romantic duo but as physical representation of the push and pull of the Force itself. Their interplay makes each character more interesting and make the story overall more interesting (I had little to no investment in the Resistance vs. First Order brouhaha).
A logical person would’ve milked this for all its worth but instead they killed off their most interesting character and half of the most interesting relationship in the trilogy. They left their heroine alone in the desert. Had Ben Solo and Rey killed off the Emperor together and survived, and the movie ended with the two of them walking off into the sunset, TROS would have sailed past $1 billion and counting weeks ago.

Völkerschlachtdenkmal, Leipzig (No. 6)
Shortly after the Battle of Leipzig, Arndt called for a monument to be built at the site. He demanded that it "has to be constructed in such a way that it can be seen from all the streets around from which the allied armies moved to the bloody decisive battle. If it is to be seen, it has to be large and splendid – like a collosus, a pyramid, a Cologne Cathedral". His plans included a 60 m (200 ft) high mound surrounded by oak groves, with a large cross on top. However, lack of political will prevented such a monument of being built at the time. Arndt, together with the painter Caspar David Friedrich, worked on a monument for Gerhard von Scharnhorst, who had died from injuries sustained in the Battle of Großgörschen, but received no support from state officials. In a letter to Arndt, Friedrich lamented in March 1814: "I am not at all surprised, that no memorials are being erected, neither to mark the great cause of the Volk, nor to the manganimous deeds of great German men. As long as we remain man-servants to the princes, nothing of this sort will happen." Other people came forward with plans for a large memorial as well, including Karl Sieveking and August von Kotzebue, the latter of whom suggested a 31 m (102 ft) tall Roman column with an Iron Cross on top, symbolising the victory of Germany against France, the "modern Rome". The architect Friedrich Weinbrenner proposed a fortress to be built outside Leipzig, at the top of which a pyramid was to be placed, with the quadriga that Napoleon had taken from the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin situated on it. On the other side of the political spectrum, the nobleman Adolph von Seckendorff put forward the plan for a simple monument to the Saxon government, which would bear an inscription reading "To the liberation of a strong land, Alexander, Franz, and Friedrich Wilhelm", honouring the three monarchs who led the fight against Napoleon. While none of the proposals for Leipzig gained any support, a monument for the Wars of Liberation was erected in Berlin in 1821. Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, it was a miniature of a gothic church tower situated on top of the Kreuzberg, bearing the names of twelve battles fought against the French. It's inscription, "From the king to the people who, at his call, nobly sacrificed their blood and chattels to the Fatherland", highlighted the role of the monarch over that of the people.
On the first anniversary of the battle, in 1814, a 18 m (59 ft) tall wooden cross was placed as a monument in front of a church in one of the burned villages near the city. It was removed by the winter of the same year. In 1817, a monument to Józef Poniatowski, a Marshal of the French Empire who had died in the battle, was placed by his sister and Polish veterans near the battle site. After the establishment of the "Association for the Celebration of October 19", more small monuments started to be built. The family of Karl Philipp, Prince of Schwarzenberg also placed a monument in his honour at the site, in 1838. In 1843, a sandstone monument was erected at "Napoleon Hill", where the Emperor had supposedly watched the battle. Two years later, the local government of Leipzig established another monument, commemorating the entrance of the victorious forces into the city. Until 1863, seven memorial stones were also placed to mark decisive points of the battle, which still remain to this day. In the same year, on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig, city officials also funded the restoration of the monument they had erected in 1845. During the same festivities, a cornerstone for a future grand monument was placed, and 23 cities from all around Germany, including Vienna, Hanover, and Dresden, pledged money for its construction. However, the Unification of Germany and the subsequent foundation of the German Empire temporarily halted plans for a monument, since public conscience turned towards the more recent military victories. The commemoration of the Battle of Leipzig as a decisive one in German history was replaced by the Battle of Sedan and the city of Leipzig erected a monument to the German unification in its centre in 1888. Steffen Poser, head of the Museum of the Monument for the Battle of the Nations, wrote: "[T]he foundation of the German Empire deprived the monument project of what had been its basis for legitimacy so far—namely, the desire for German unification, the leitmotif, which had been missing at the time."

100 Awesome Folkways LPs
Back in 2005 I had just dropped out of graduate school and returned to Edmonton, Alberta. I was waiting for the semester to start so I could begin my journey as a mathematician. I'm indebted to my friend Christopher Bateman (co-author of In Fine Style) who told me that there was a collection of Folkways Records at the University of Alberta. An entire collection?! Wow! The only other complete collection was at the Smithsonian Museum! And I had nothing to do all day (except for my string of terrible minnimum wage jobs)!
I started visiting folkwaysAlive!, the small Folkways centre (photos below), regularly and digging through their collection. Most of the knowledge about Folkways at the time was centred on their incredible collection of ethnographic recordings. However, as I began looking through the catalog I was finding all kinds of weird and amusing records. There was one titled Speach After the Removal of the Larynx and another called Sounds of the Junkyard. Even more, there were famous composers of electronic music who had published LPs on folkways. What were those doing there? It turns out that Folkways founder Moses Asch was determined to capture all "sound" and that in the pure pursuit of this philosophy several LPs of collateral damage would delight the catalog.
Some years later I had a radio show on CJSR where I played music entirely from the Folkways collection (the show was appropriately titled The Sounds of Folkways). At the same time I was trying to capitalize on my newfound knowledge and tried to pitch a book and/or column to various people titled 100 Weird and Wonderful LPs on Folkways. I wasn't successful, but in the process I had made a "list of weird Folkways LPs" and that's what I'd like to share today.
Here is my list. It's not complete. It's not a list of "the best folkways LPs." It's just a list of Folkways records I happen to like and think weird or cool. Thus, there are large omissions in categories like Blues and Ethnomusicology, which contain many of the most incredible Folkways records.
You can find music clips for most of these LPs on YouTube. This list is a decade old, so there's probably some errata and some of the catalog numbers aren't likely correct.
I hope you enjoy.
PS - I still need a copy of Speach After the Removal of the Layrnx!
PPS - I'm forward thankful to Lorna Arndt who so graciously let me hang out in the folkwaysAlive! office!
