I could get into my whole "family history" vis-a-vis dealing with/being "whales" but for now I'd rather just say that when my closest friend's spirit companion, who themselves is an autonomous avatar of a light being too "large" to directly interact with this world, saw the thing that I am attached to she was utterly horrified. I don't see or hear spirits, but in this instance I could feel her and her voice shaking as she briefly recounted it through them(my friend), still filled with a will to disbelieve and forget.
