World's Saddest Breakfast Club: Fun Facts

The opening line is a result of me angsting to @batmoniker about how I couldn't figure out how to start my fic, and her jokingly being like "I got you, bro. Ready? 'It was a dark and stormy night'" and then me just being stubborn and committing to the bit.

The story started with a vague idea of "everyone in the kitchen at 3am for different reasons and Jason channeling his inner short order cook." All I knew going in was the order I wanted people to appear, what was wrong with them (sick, hurt, insomnia, etc) and what food Jason would be making for them. Everything else I made up as I went.

If I could go back and change one thing about this fic, I'd reduce how long Jason was kidnapped to like, 6-8 days, max. 16 days seemed funny when I wrote it, but in hindsight, I feel like he'd be a little more fucked up in the story if he were really escaping from that many days of captivity lmao

I headcanon Dick as the kind of person who straight-up forgets to eat when he's preoccupied, and Jason as the kind of person who cannot FATHOM this concept. Jason absolutely will miss a meal if the situation calls for it, don't get me wrong, but he's aware the entire time he's doing it and it makes him super antsy. (This once turned into A Thing™ when Jason was like, 13 years old and staying with Dick for the weekend for some brotherly bonding and Dick forgot about lunch and by 5pm, Jason maybe sorta kinda had a minor panic attack about it. Dick was a lot more mindful of that moving forward)

Bruce's favorite food being lobster thermidor is a reference to the Lego Batman movie

I wrote this whole fic with Julia Child's recipe pulled up in one tab and my google doc in the other

At some point I realized that since I started with fresh lobsters, I was going to have to write Jason killing them, and it derailed me so hard that the fic nearly became about meatloaf instead. (Never mind the fact that Jason canonically kills human beings — that's totally fine. I just draw the line at him killing lobsters 😰)

(in the end I just kinda glossed over it and made sure they were already cooked before Damian appeared so I wouldn't have to address it 😬)

Dick's reoccurring shoulder injury is a reference to the DCAU where I swear that man has dislocated his shoulder/injured his arm at least 4x

The line about Tim being allergic/throwing up when he eats eggs was inspired by a line in chap 11 of @goldkirk's fic Hymn, which I've reread about 37x

Jason is correct— grits are fucking delicious and definitely not baby food.

My favorite line is "Okay there’s self-sacrificial bullshit, and then there’s whatever the fresh hell that is."

The idea for Cass being a big meat-eater comes from a comic panel where Steph offers her a plate of rice and beans and Cass says she needs meat and starts mischievously eying Steph's hamster. Can't find the panel to save my life, but I promise it's out there.

Steph's nickname of "Zombie Boy" for Jason is borrowed from @audreycritter's Cor Et Cerebrum series (which is a fucking masterpiece, btw)

This fic was gonna be called "Creatures of the Night" until batmoniker said Steph's line made for a better title

Several people have asked me whether Jason was really cooking Bruce's lobster to spite him, or if he was actually intending to make it for him all along. The answer is... both? Like Jason's kind of an unreliable narrator in that he's trying to convince himself that he's just doing what he's doing to be a little shithead when deep down it's all stemming from his need to take care of his family, you know? Like he'll never admit it, but that's where his heart is at.

To everyone who's asked for a part 2 where the family finds out Jason was kidnapped, I'm gonna be honest: the main reason I don't think I'm ever going to write that scene is because I can't come up with a good enough joke for him to make to accidentally out himself 💀

as an outsider, if your eyes were to simply drift across him, he’s normal. well, if devilishly handsome and the prettiest boy you’d ever seen counted as normal. if you got closer to him, then you’d be able to see the little fangs protruding from his mouth and if you ram your fingers through his hair you’d feel what could only be described as ‘scars’ mirroring each other atop his head. that said his body is covered in scars so a few along his skull was to be expected. outside of those small traits, there was nothing physically unusual about the boy.

but you’re no outsider. you’re intimately familiar with the werewolf you proudly call your boyfriend. none of his more instinctual traits bother you and you find the ears that pop above his head during the full moon are absolutely adorable.

instinctually, Ajax loves to hunt. generally, Ajax loves you. so to put two of his most favourite things together was only natural. to dress you up for a halloween party all skimpy only to chase you through winding trees in the forest got to him, and you, like nothing else could. allowing his animalistic form and traits to shine through was comfortable to him and arousing to you. he’d chase you through the most difficult of paths all while cackling and shouting with delight; he’d most certainly catch the cutest little prey that night!!

how big would nocts dragon be? bc imagine after noct gets out of the crystal and it's the long dark and his dragon is huge at this point (like maybe noct is the size of its pupil, kind of big) so it's just be this huge shadow that you can't see until it hits light (and what abt auleas dragon?)

Hmm, I've always kinda sucked with accurately describing size/scale, but for the dragons there's a few different visuals I like to refer to when I think about their size.

Also for when Noct was young, I think of a progression from, like, Aithusa from Merlin to Gregory from The Sandman, progressing up to somewhere along those pictures above.

I think a noticeable growth in Noct's dragon is a fun thought, it'd give an excuse for little moment where Noct's amazed as they come face to face for the first time in years, the whole; "Is that you? You grew too, huh?" with some gentle nose and face pets and ;u; GHHH that just makes me want to clutch my chest.

At the same time, I don't know if I'd want either dragon to be too big. I guess one of my personal reference points for "too big" would probably be like, the size of Bahamut here:

Because they both essentially look like specks in comparison to who they're standing in front of. And, personally, I don't think I would want Noctis to be a speck next to either dragon.

If anything, out of both dragons I think Aulea's would be the bigger one. Bigger, older, wiser, maybe just a wee bit stronger. And I 1000% think Noct should get sandwiched/nosed between the two affectionately upon his return. The two can roar in joy together about it and people can hear it for miles!! It shakes the ground and skies around them!

And maybe Nyx, the bros, Cor or whoever is close by at the time hasn't heard a roar like that for years now. Not since Noct left. So when they hear/feel it, they assume it can only mean one thing.

Oh thats a tough one. Id have to say just various little moments. Snarking with jan over tea and she rolls her eyes and waves her hand like something said was ~preposterous~ but he cant keep himself from smiling or flushing while doing it. The way they'll make a dirty joke w/o thinking and if we're in mixed company she'll cover her mouth like she surprised herself by saying it (like he doesnt make worse jokes when its just the four of us). Trying and mostly suceeding to climb up remus bc i like spiders but not that much why did you make a small sea of them why do they want a hug reem please. The way re will nuzzle in and somehow wrap arms, legs, and (sometimes) actual tentacles around you if cor falls asleep on you. Listening to music from the same set of earbuds w andy, or trying to show them how to make paper snowflakes while they struggle with the safety scissors. With all of them, doing their makeup, and them teasing me for sticking my tongue out when im trying to focus on it. Just a lot of little moments, mostly the way people smile or the way their fingers touch yours when they pass you a mug, or putting their cold ass hands on your sides to show you how cold they are, or the way they wipe off stray mascara for you. Other favorites are things like joking around with friends, changing profile names and displaynames for the funnies or convincing other people to, seeing them infodump and not knowing shit abt what theyre talking about but loving reading along and learning more abt a thing that makes them happy, making fun of friends because bullying is a love language, sharing new shows and music w each other and getting new interests you never wouldve if a friend didnt take the time to share that thing they like, etc. I dont think i could pick one favorite memory when theres so many little moments and experiences that have that moment of connection and love (platonic, familial, romantic, whatever kind, just. Love) Those moments are my favorite

I finished all my homework early so i can play honkai and it was okay. As I expected honkai is more of a traditional gacha game but I tend to prefer open world so I guess i’ll stick to playing genshin most of the time. But it’s actually really fun!! It’s a nice aesthetic change and the combat system is super fun (kinda confusing but hey i’ve only been playing for a day) and I really like the characters I have so far. SO excited to know more about the lore because that’s all I’m here for honestly.

Also is it just me or did everyone else kinda forgot that we already have a bit of info about The Chasm in the game? I believe it was during Xingqiu’s story quest (correct me if i’m wrong) and we had to buy Cor Lapis in the chasm (but not exactly in the chasm) and the person there said that the chasm had lots of ores so that’s where miners make their money (???) but something strange was found so the qixing had to seal the chasm off. These are just guesses so take this with a grain of salt, but I think the qixing might ask for help from us to investigate the chasm or to defeat whatever is in there. I dunno but i’m just looking forward to having new regions or parts of the map unlocked so i’m aimlessly speculating.

+++ i don’t rlly complain about updates being “filler” content but i’ve also been wondering why we haven’t had a new region update and i found this video that makes rlly sense about why that is.

that sounds really cool! im glad you’re enjoying the game. i also prefer open world games better bc thats what i grew up w. and yes! honkai has a really vast lore and while i didnt play or know much, the few fragments i hear when i talk abt it w my friends who do play sound very intriguing.

seeing as we’re getting content dry, its no wonder you’re looking forward to new areas. i feel the same way (inazuma when?). i do believe that was xingqiu’s quest. yknow how there’s a new boss leak right? like the geovishap looking thing that had like a name that starts w an a? maybe thats the boss for that area? lowkey would make sense bc its by the mountainside and its a bunch of rocks and its also relatively close to the other geovishaps and yada yada.

the game is huge and we’re not even 50% in. imagine how many hours you need to put through just to download genshin by the time the map’s complete. lolz, might as well dedicate my phone just for genshin w that big ass file size. it’s a valid, logical and probably working theory but at the same time, i also think they’re just stalling. given how much detail is in the game + possible new mechanics, its no wonder they’re taking so long.

I really like that the outcome for the Pretty Song!daemons is becoming their own creatures, bc that means Lucis will have to work out how to deal with a bunch of semi-sapient magical beings that are no longer hostile. Also, on that note, it occurs to me that bad ppl will become much more hesitant to hurt kids in rural Lucis after stories of various assholes scaring kids and getting curbstomped by a FRICKING IRON GIANT, or tackled by a swarm of angry tonberries (1/?, sorry this might be LONG

Okay so- WOW this is a long ask XDD. This was a blast to read. You rolled with this SO MUCH FARTHER than I anticipated/had thought of my self but all of this is GLORIOUS and I’m just gonna- bask in it for a few minutes. I have no idea if this is canon for Pretty Song verse but it PROBABLY IS because it’s glorious. Okay so-

It’s definitely an ... adjustment period for people and daemons a like, with semi-sapient (or fully sapient if in some cases) new neighbors being a Thing. The kiddos are totally the first to figure these facts out and take advantage because they find three headed fire dogs of death to be cool rather than terrifying.

Daemons are totally instinctive protectors of kiddos. That’s a new thing now. They do it on behalf of Pretty Song.

From there you have researchers like Sania who are FASCINATED by the sudden change and want to know the catalyst and how smart are these new daemons and ohhhhh you like MUSIC okay (Sania ends up spending like- a month in the wilds following this one lone Ronin who gets INCREASINGLY EXASPERATED over this human’s lack of self-preservation until he’s like “screw it this is my human now”.)

Pffffft I love the mental imagery of this. Just- “I found a puppy! Can I keep it?” Said puppy wags its tail as all three heads happily drool lava on the lawn.

I ADORE THIS??? Just- not all daemons were people once, a LOT were animals, but some of the ones that were people wake up with like- patchy memories and they’ve been daemons so long they can’t remember to be distressed that they aren’t HUMAN but- but they remember families and loved ones and so they tentatively trickle back.

And oh boy picture the REVELATION that rocks the world when this starts happening. The realization that some daemons used to be PEOPLE and now they’re coming back. And I’m sure I could make that super angsty but I won’t. Instead we shall all enjoy the mental picture of a little boy who wished on a star for his missing dad to come back one day opening the door to find a Yojimbo crouched there, shyly holding a poorly wrapped present that he promised his son years ago and the kid is like “MOM DAD’S BACK!” And there is much hugging and crying and the happily wearing of his dad’s giant daemon hat.

It’s a really, really good thing that Regis is the king and Pretty Song is his best friend’s daughter, because as soon as this becomes a Thing Regis is there running damage control, passing laws on daemon protections and rights and how to go about properly dealing with them if they actually perform a crime that isn’t straight murder of every daemon in the area, how to test if these are sentient daemons or the semi-sapient kind etc, etc. He knows it will take a while for society to acclimate to the changes, but curse it all he is GOING to have the groundwork already laid out.

The rest of the world thinks Lucis is crazy at first, but then there’s Weskham, happily hiring several Master Tonberry to work as chefs under him in Altissia and it’s WORKING and more and more daemons are waking up from the Thirst even though no one knows HOW at this point so the rest of the world had better get with the program man.

I think the half-turned ones actually revert? Like- they only stay daemon if they’ve been fully converted, otherwise they slowly revert back to their original state as the Scourge loses more and more of its potency. Ardyn is technically a “full daemon” even if he kept his human shape thanks to his healing magic so he doesn’t revert, but he is fascinated when he and the rest of the daemons all seem to take a collective chill pill.

Cor totally gives Noctis a Cerberi puppy as a present btw. He just- he SO DOES. Regis is Not Best Pleased.

I love the idea of nonhuman/human integrated society too! It’s really cool. Tonberry chefs and various aids/adjustments for beings with extra limbs/odd body shapes. Ronin and Yojimbo who work with the Hunter corps, Bombs that patrol towns at night like the neighborhood watchdogs, goblins getting to work in their mines rather than just be bored in them, Naga nannies (or daemon nannies in general because all the reformed daemons in this verse are MAJORLY protective of kiddos)- it’s a fun thought!

Pretty Song has no idea just how big of a revolution she spawned with just some pretty music and a lot of courage XDD.

ohAHA, SHEESH. 90% of my finished drafts look nothing like my initial idea, this is def one of them. first idea was to have weds and eric perform a professional and LEGAL autopsy while being fucking nasty with each other, second i wanted to swap eric with ben.

theeen i decided that i'd rather this be wildly illegal and gross to fit with pt 1, so i figured i'd have eric n mister freak see cor doing the very wrong bad thing and pick dead boy up afterwards to have fun with back at home.

and THEN i said fuck it and decided to involve them all. screw it. they're all in a super toxic, fucked up poly relationship that's fueled by drugs and favoritism. you can't stop me.

wednesday and eric nab joey after corey finishes up with him and take him back to what you could probably consider a crack house and they all flay him like a fish because the "duke of spook" has a medical kink and fantasizes abt performing an autopsy. end scene.

13: Do you prefer writing multi-chapter fics or single-part fics? Do you prefer reading multi-chapter fics or single-part fics?

Writing wise, it's hard to say. I'd prefer to bang out chapter after chapter of my multi-chap, but it just doesn't happen like that for me. *glances at cagefighter au and sweats* It'll always be a matter of where my motivation and inspiration is. Reading wise, I don't really have a preference tbh. If the synopsis compels me, I'm locked in whether it's multi-chap or not.

16: Do you stick to canon when you write characters and fics?

heh that's a hard No. My brain will always be wired to "Nyx totally doesn't die" and "Noct totally doesn't die". Not to mention the 3845802s09 rewrites of kingsglaive in my head where Noct's there for the fall of the city. Even for, like, the sillier more mundane details. Is my Noct and Uncle Cor shtick (which I've rambled mostly on twitter abt) remotely canon? Nah. Will I take any opportunity to indulge in it? Yes. I think with Nyx and the other glaives it's easier to get away with since what we know about them canonically is very limited. I hope I still write believable interpretations of their characters and how they might talk or respond to something, that's usually my biggest concern. But projecting my silly headcanons and such onto them? Yeah, that definitely happens.

17: What has been the proudest moment for you so far since you started writing?

Hmm.. it's hard to say. I've been writing since I was in second grade. I said all throughout middle school and high school and early college, that one day I was going to be a published author. I had a original story that was my baby, but... it just kinda fell through the cracks. It was supposed to be my proudest moment/ultimate goal/accomplishment. But as the years pass, I don't think it's really in the cards anymore..

So, idk really. I guess you could say finally diving into the fic world. Legit, I've loved writing all my life, but I never felt brave enough to try writing fic or posting it when I was old enough to understand the concept of it. My first NyxNoct fic back in 2017? That was the first fic I've EVER posted. And ever since then, writing fic has made me really happy. So I guess just finding a reason to keep writing through fic and have fun with it is my proudest moment. I've made great friends because of it and written some pretty cool things. I like to think some of them are pretty cool, anyway.
