hey i love your critters and creatures but i struggle to figure out what species is which, i thought the towers were the spiky ones but then you posted a thing about towers featuring those and also the tall ones that look more towerey, this might just be because i’m a fool but i’d love an explanation on which is which so i can better enjoy your kickass world building and BEASTIES
Tumblr media
Towers are multi-body intelligences, every caste is the same species, and makes up one individual’s body.
The drones communicate using radio, which they use unconsciously, like how you use electric signals to move your hands.
Towers birth drones involuntarily whenever their body senses the need for them. Towers pollinate and birth hubs rarely, once they have a secure standing in their region.

do you think dendritic arm Alhaitham has to brush off flowers and leaves whenever he washes his hands or when it rains
I hadn't really thought much about it, but I can see that happening.
Poor Alhaitham the first time he figures out he's a walking bloom waiting to happen.

Then he rolls back into his house and freaks Kaveh out all over again.
I hope he stays far away from pyro and electro....
Thank you for your ask! I appreciate you taking the time to say something ✨

-Do you have any thoughts on B'Elanna's grandmother (the one who made the banana pancakes) because I swear I think about this woman a disproportionate amount lol, and- -What are some things (broadly speaking) that you'd like to see more of in Trek fandom?
Feel free to choose a question if you don't wanna do both! And I hope your cold gets better soon :)
Thank you so much!! (I also hope that this cold gets better soon, my head feels like a balloon)
I do have some thoughts on B'Elanna's paternal grandmother, but I'd like to stress that these are very partial impressions and I probably should think about her in more depth. There's very little we know about her from canon; the banana pancakes (and the fact that she cared for B'Elanna and made her meals often enough that it's one of B'Elanna's favorite treats from childhood, which I personally interpret as her living on Kessik IV as well, canon doesn't contradict this), that she had two sons, the fact that she liked Miral but knew her John well enough to know that he wouldn't treat her right, and was against their marriage. The last part always stood out to me!! It can be taken in many different ways, and while it could be easily just a stereotype of the protective-mother-of-the-favorite-son, I'd like to put forward the idea that she was simply a woman unafraid to speak the truth as she saw it. I like to think that when John and Miral got married regardless, she did her best to make Miral a part of the family, and I think of B'Elanna's grandma as someone who was very conscious of the ways in which Miral was at a disadvantage in this situation (alone with basically no support network of her own, the only Klingon around). In one fic I wrote her quoting Gloria Anzaldúa because I can't stop imagining her as a feminist who tried her best trying to raise two conscientious sons and... it did not exactly work out the way she intended, but it doesn't mean she's going to leave her daughter-in-law and her granddaughter to fend for themselves. (iirc Miral also never says that John's family was a problem, which can be interpreted as her not feeling particularly left out, beside the obvious fact that nobody else was Klingon.) If we follow my headcanon that she lived on Kessik IV as well, I also like to think that she (and her husband?) moved there because of her job—it would be fun if B'Elanna had taken a liking to engineering because one of her favorite people had a nice workshop where she could hang out even when things between John and Miral got rocky. In general imagine B'Elanna's grandma as a no-nonsense, quick small woman, with curly black (graying) hair and a big smile but that could turn very stern in the span of a second. I imagine she eventually returned to Earth as well, once John separated from Miral, and if B'Elanna was to reunite with her it would be there.
By the way I'd love to hear your thoughts on B'Elanna's grandmother very much, if you feel like it and haven't already written about her!
As for what I'd like to see more of in Trek fandom... I don't know, obviously the fandom can do much better re: appreciating and be respectful of characters of color and women, always something I can improve on as well. I think what I like to see/read the best (women dealing with very gnarly problems! Romance between women that is anything but fluffy!) already exists and there are so many fantastic artists (you absolutely included!!) that develop the themes I like to see with the complexity I think they deserve, it feels like asking for more of that is almost... entitled? But I wouldn't say no on seeing more of these themes both in fanworks and fandom analyses, definitely.

hey! so its 4am and ive just finished my, um... fifth(?) reread of world's saddest breakfast club and like! aaahhhh!!!
do u got abything to tell us abt this story? like sbt the writing proccess or things u thought that did not make it in or hc or anything really. i dont have a question exactly, just wanted to hear you talk about it. im a bit. well. obssesed.
Oooh cool question! I definitely do!
World's Saddest Breakfast Club: Fun Facts
The opening line is a result of me angsting to @batmoniker about how I couldn't figure out how to start my fic, and her jokingly being like "I got you, bro. Ready? 'It was a dark and stormy night'" and then me just being stubborn and committing to the bit.
The story started with a vague idea of "everyone in the kitchen at 3am for different reasons and Jason channeling his inner short order cook." All I knew going in was the order I wanted people to appear, what was wrong with them (sick, hurt, insomnia, etc) and what food Jason would be making for them. Everything else I made up as I went.
If I could go back and change one thing about this fic, I'd reduce how long Jason was kidnapped to like, 6-8 days, max. 16 days seemed funny when I wrote it, but in hindsight, I feel like he'd be a little more fucked up in the story if he were really escaping from that many days of captivity lmao
I headcanon Dick as the kind of person who straight-up forgets to eat when he's preoccupied, and Jason as the kind of person who cannot FATHOM this concept. Jason absolutely will miss a meal if the situation calls for it, don't get me wrong, but he's aware the entire time he's doing it and it makes him super antsy. (This once turned into A Thing™ when Jason was like, 13 years old and staying with Dick for the weekend for some brotherly bonding and Dick forgot about lunch and by 5pm, Jason maybe sorta kinda had a minor panic attack about it. Dick was a lot more mindful of that moving forward)
Bruce's favorite food being lobster thermidor is a reference to the Lego Batman movie
I wrote this whole fic with Julia Child's recipe pulled up in one tab and my google doc in the other
At some point I realized that since I started with fresh lobsters, I was going to have to write Jason killing them, and it derailed me so hard that the fic nearly became about meatloaf instead. (Never mind the fact that Jason canonically kills human beings — that's totally fine. I just draw the line at him killing lobsters 😰)
(in the end I just kinda glossed over it and made sure they were already cooked before Damian appeared so I wouldn't have to address it 😬)
Dick's reoccurring shoulder injury is a reference to the DCAU where I swear that man has dislocated his shoulder/injured his arm at least 4x
The line about Tim being allergic/throwing up when he eats eggs was inspired by a line in chap 11 of @goldkirk's fic Hymn, which I've reread about 37x
Jason is correct— grits are fucking delicious and definitely not baby food.
My favorite line is "Okay there’s self-sacrificial bullshit, and then there’s whatever the fresh hell that is."
The idea for Cass being a big meat-eater comes from a comic panel where Steph offers her a plate of rice and beans and Cass says she needs meat and starts mischievously eying Steph's hamster. Can't find the panel to save my life, but I promise it's out there.
EDIT: finally found it!
Tumblr media
Steph's nickname of "Zombie Boy" for Jason is borrowed from @audreycritter's Cor Et Cerebrum series (which is a fucking masterpiece, btw)
This fic was gonna be called "Creatures of the Night" until batmoniker said Steph's line made for a better title
Several people have asked me whether Jason was really cooking Bruce's lobster to spite him, or if he was actually intending to make it for him all along. The answer is... both? Like Jason's kind of an unreliable narrator in that he's trying to convince himself that he's just doing what he's doing to be a little shithead when deep down it's all stemming from his need to take care of his family, you know? Like he'll never admit it, but that's where his heart is at.
To everyone who's asked for a part 2 where the family finds out Jason was kidnapped, I'm gonna be honest: the main reason I don't think I'm ever going to write that scene is because I can't come up with a good enough joke for him to make to accidentally out himself 💀

HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT DOCTOR WHO??
OKAY FIRST THINGS FIRST HELLO!!!!
SECONDLY-
Tumblr media
CAN'T BELIEVE WE JUST WITNESSED ONE OF THE VERY FEW TRULY HAPPY ENDINGS IN THIS SHOW
This is the perfect excuse to tell you about a recurring thought I've had while watching new who time and time again, and while watching devastating season finales and companion exits, which is the following (and bear with me because it's long): "there is already so much tragedy in doctor/companion relationships, they're so doomed-by-the-narrative, so one-of-us-has-to-leave-first by their very nature that it seems impossible to imagine any other way. However, and precisely because of this, one of the very few things that could revolutionize this show would be having a lifelong Doctor/companion story. Allowing just for once a gentler quieter resolution, having the companion stay, and letting the Doctor stay beside them too"
AND GUESS WHAT
The state of euphoria those last 15 minutes of the ep sent me to is absolutely undescribable and it felt DIFFERENT and EMOTIONAL and FREEING! It was a rush of fresh air and a balm to my wounds!
So yes, I think Russel did something new and most importantly, something good. The final theme of the 3 specials being healing and home and found family mean the world to me, and I don't know, being a queer ace person even more so! It feels achingly true to Tennant's Doctors, and having it be confirmed that his incarnations were the ones that yearned for a home and domesticity the most is absolutely SPOT ON NAILED IT CHEF KISS
THAT SAID, finales have never been the strong suit of RTD, and I think this one is similarly flawed. I think he has rehashed some of his tropes, he has trouble reconciling the multiple conflicts of the Doctor and he only knows one way of solving that. Not gonna go over that here, because I'd be damned being pissy and shit at a time such as this. We got a happier ending than any of us could've ever imagined, and in a show that rarely indulges in that, well, how can I complain?

Oh now I am very curious about the Donnie timeloop fic idea you have 👀
OHOHOOO thank you for asking!
I've actually had the idea for this one in mind for a long time-- before I even started writing Spider's Web, in fact.
Basically, it'll be the typical time loop trope where Donnie slowly starts to realize why he's reliving the same day over and over and over again, each time seeing just how far he can go. It'll start out as wacky hijinks but slowly get more serious. At some point he'll manage to suck someone else into his time loop and get their help to end it. Mostly it will be humor and fluff, but there will probably be angst because that's just how I roll.

2, 3, 12 and 21 for the fandom ask game, please! 💜
2. Most recent fandom you joined?
I’m very close to joining the What We Do In The Shadows (tv series) fandom- I’ve got like 2 more episodes to finish first then I’m diving all in
Second to that is probably the new Dr.Who
3. All-time favorite pairing?
I’m a big fan of Jonathan Sims/Martin Blackwood from The Magnus Archives 💕
Don’t know if I could say “all time favorite” as I go through intense phases/fixations, but Jmart has been my most read ship for the past year or so
12. Craziest thing you've ever done as part of a fandom?
Ohh, I think for me, the craziest thing I did for a fandom would have to be the first time I sent an author fanart for their fic. I was a pretty beginner artist at the time and so nervous- it was received super well though!
21. Favorite fic trope?
You know how it was a trend to ask guys how often they thought about the Roman Empire, and they’d answer like weekly, daily, ect?
My Holy Roman Empire is time travel
Time loops, past fix-it’s, future fix-it’s, a copy of you from the future is here to smack you upside the head and make you accept help and love-
I just- AAA
Time travel, ya know?

hi! i saw your post about asking your allo friends questions about attraction that break their brains, and i was wondering if you had any examples of said questions? i've been questioning if i might be on the ace and/or aro spectrum so i thought i could see if that could be helpful to work out lololol
heeeeey!
you bet! i questioned being ace for a really, really long time but that one was easier for me to sort out. aro has been a LOT tougher.
I'm happy to share some of the questions I've asked. Sometimes people have answers for me and sometimes not so much. I hope they help!
how would you explain attraction to somebody? romantic and/or sexual?
can attraction happen just on looks alone? like you see this person for the first time and wanna sex them?
how would you separate how you feel romantic attraction/love from platonic?
how would you describe the difference between infatuation and love?
okay! those are the first ones i was able to find. most people really, really struggle to answer these questions but they've given way to incredibly interesting conversations, with folks all over and off of both spectrums.
maybe other folks can chime in too 😊
I wish you luck and feel free to come visit the ask box any time. I'm hardly an authority but i AM a chronic overthinker and am always happy to share those thoughts!

i gotta know, how to the bodies communicate for trumpets
because we already know that towers use radio waves, do trumpets use similar methods? or something slower than light? that could be interesting where they think just as complex as we can, it's just slower because (based on the scale of chariot in the planets post) it could take a few seconds at near light speeds to send a signal from one side to the other and trumpets are planet-wide collective intelligences
idk idk, i just wanna know how that works, i love your aliens and trumpets seem untalked about, which is a shame
On Trumpet performance language
Trumpets have evolved by using their nodes’ behaviors rather than overriding them. Interpersonal language is applied instinctual displays from nodal species. The timing, actor positions relative to other actors, and viewing angle influence the meaning of a concert’s performance.
Since trumpet acted language and written language evolved independently, they don’t have a strong correlation until organized society much later, when performances begin needing records, and records begin needing to be read by trumpets other than the author.
On memory
Trumpets store information using the collective memories of the flora and fauna that live on them: nodes.
Sessile organisms take in memories, relay information, and listen for inquiries. Their memory is dense and quickly readable, something similar to computer RAM.
Motile nodes can also store memory, but due to their minds being preoccupied with processing their experiences and placing priority on relevant knowledge, they aren’t reliable for long term storage since they are susceptible to compromise (like putting your valuables in a box out in a room rather than in the garage.)
In exchange for holding onto valuable experience, the sessile nodes get protected and propagated.
How Trumpets regulate their ecosystem
Predators of the system kill their prey in a controlled, instant way. Prey nodes designated for eating have no fear, and live healthy lives prior.
In return, predator nodes provide herbivores with information and protection from non-trumpets.
Since herbivore nodes have an equally powerful say in the decisions of predators, they have selected for individuals with weaker prey drives towards nodes used for computation.
Trumpets cycle their resources in a methodical, efficient way to allow the minds of all nodes to focus on communicating.
The same goes for vegetation. Since they hold memories, they grow nutrient rich, dataless crops for herbivores to eat instead of anything vital.
A trumpet may involuntarily alter the ratios of node types, but only in emergencies. Think of adrenaline, or inflammation from isolation. A panicking trumpet who fears for its safety can birth more predator nodes, but will need to devote energy to sowing more food soon. Trumpets prefer homeostasis in their ecosystems.
Nearly all of the nutrients the trumpet cycles start from the large autotrophic body who photosynthesizes and filter feeds, then distributes its resources into organisms that subsist commensally or formerly parasitically on it. The trumpet allots for them and is not harmed.
Many of these sessile organisms are descendants of jet propulsed lineages and can still move around (think of anemones).
Tools
Trumpets develop tools by breeding for species or species’ byproducts. Knives were among the first inventions through the extended mouthparts of small, portable nodes. Technology is spread via sharing studs.
Loneliness at the edge of language density
Trumpets are unable to integrate aliens into their biology, but do enjoy talking with groups of aliens (to account for language density).
The sophonts most capable of communicating with trumpets with minimal resources (excluding life support, which would make them one of the most resource intensive) are boxkites, who have a fractal sense of individuality—a group of individuals together is as singular as one individual alone.
A group of 30 boxkites can maintain a conversation with a trumpet, since each boxkite can establish tactile communication with up to 4 simultaneous partners, combining processing power.
To answer your question
Trumpets communicate using lasers produced via nodes with gas bladders and electric organs.
They are quick thinkers, but their perception of time a ‘train of thought’ is more fluid than ours.
Depending on the species of the node, stimuli are observed at different rates, density, and types.
Trumpets are capable of having multiple simultaneous lines of thought by directing nodes to communicate within clusters.
On focus
A trumpet’s focus is its priority on nodes facing novel situations or issues.
If the group of nodes are small sensory prey, information intake becomes rapid and perceptive capacity grows with it.
If the focus is on a sessile node who’s registering a gradual increase in food scents, perceptive ability decreases as more priority is placed on the nodes who can report vital information at any moment, but not very densely or quickly.
Trumpets can have multiple foci at once, but since their total mental bandwidth is finite, all foci add up to the total communicative capacity of the trumpet.
Trumpets can theoretically evenly distribute their focus to every node, but it would be nearly impossible to make decisions more complex than reflexes and first-come-first-serve communication between nodes, meaning valuable messages are given as much weight as run-of-the-mill reports. This is a stupor state for trumpets.
On the other end, putting total communicative priority on a single node will mean any report of the focus will interrupt all other channels, like national alerts on television. This tunnel vision state is also unproductive, only approached by trumpets who have extreme distrust.
First contact
Trumpets were contacted by a team of crowns who detected a living presence on the trumpet homeworld.
The first trumpets contacted were a community. Due to the lack of infrastructure and the sheer size of the planet, a portion of the total trumpet population is still learning about the first contact years later. Languages have been deciphered and a peaceful, minimal presence is established for researchers.
Oz is one of the trumpets who learns about the first contact a little while after it happens. He’s skeptical, and dismisses the aliens’ small and quiet operations. He establishes himself as to not be bothered—alien organizations have agreed to leave trumpets alone upon their requests.
Trumpets are buoyant and carried by the wind. The largest body is free floating, but may be (slowly) thrusted manually by jet-propelled nodes.
More on Boxkite group language
Gal the boxkite is only capable of casually communicating with one partner at a time, two if she strains herself.
Even talking with one partner, boxkite tactile language is very dense.
Humans and other sophonts can equip touch pad translators on their bodies for boxkites to type on. The translated messages can be linked to a speaker or earpiece.
Infant boxkites aggregate in groups to compensate for their limited individual cognitive ability.

I would love to hear your Caranthir gender thoughts if you want to share
-@outofangband
Sure, it's actually one of my favourite things to think and talk about!
I generally headcanon them as genderfluid and I think they were still quite young when they found out that their hroa doesn’t always accurately represent their fea. In Aman they used to wear their hair down when they were feeling as a man and put their hair up in intricate braids to signal that they were feeling as a woman that day. Clothing wise they always wore a combination of stereotypically female and male pieces.
In Beleriand their gender expression became more of a political thing. After the revolt of the Noldor and the burning of the ships, the Feanorians had to appear as a unit, so no matter what their fea felt that day, Caranthir would never outwardly present themselves as a woman when they had to fulfill their role as Lord of Thargelion or one of the Sons of Feanor. They only expressed their true self with their family and trusted servants behind closed doors and later with Haleth and her people as the Haladin had a different understanding of gender roles than the Elves.
However, no matter what gender they are, they always give off rich lesbian aunt and goth boyfriend vibes. They remind me of Marlene Dietrich!

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💗
You're super sweet! Alright, let's do this:
1. I Must Leave, Right Now, Immediately
Tim splits his pants at a charity gala. To say that he’s expecting merciless teasing from his brothers is an understatement. What he gets is… not that?
(This was my first fic for batfam and it was genuinely just really fun to write — especially the little plot twist!)
2. The Kids Aren't Alright
After being sent home early from patrol, Jason finds his concerningly ill neighbor attempting to haggle with an Uber driver.
(While this was not my first posted fic for batfam, it was my first fic idea for batfam, so of course it was a sickfic)
3. World’s Saddest Breakfast Club
Following a couple of Very Bad Weeks™ (which may or may not have involved being kidnapped and mildly tortured), Jason decides the best way to cheer himself up is to break into the Manor for a 3 a.m. snack. Turns out he isn’t the only one awake.
(This one was just really cozy and fun to write, and I liked that I got to include everyone)
4. 5 Times Tim Spends the Night at Wayne Manor + 1 Time He Comes Home
Tim is good at galas. No, scratch that—Tim is great at galas. He’s been attending them ever since the age of three, when his parents first stuffed him into his little Gymboree tuxedo and gave him a stern lecture about ‘sitting quietly’ and ‘speaking when spoken to.’ He knows all the rules: what to wear, how to stand, when to smile, what to say, what not to say. He knows how to come across as polite and intelligent and charming, and on absolutely any other day, he would be rocking this. --- Or, my take on a ‘Tim Joins the Family Early’ AU, told through a series of sleepovers—most of which are unplanned.
(This one is my baby, and also wildly self-indulgent. Tim's not having a good time, but dammit if there isn't comfort)
5. Ties That Bind
“It’s fine,” Dick says, stabbing at one of the little red roast potatoes with his fork. He drags it across his plate through the gravy, painting brown swirls on the china. “When is Bruce coming back?” Alfred sighs. “Master Bruce will be out rather late again this evening, I’m afraid.” “Figures,” Dick says flippantly, dragging the potato around to draw a five-point star. “He’s never home.” --- Dick's first few weeks at the Manor are rough.
(Short and sweet, but I liked how it turned out, and I liked getting to focus on baby Dick for a bit <3 )

Hola! Ok, I’ll take the liberty and ask the ‘Send me an AU, Trope and pairing’ thing. You can answer just one, of course.
Modern, Blind date set up by mutual friends, ShikaTema.
Canon or Canon divergence, Meet ugly, NaruHina.
Your choose, Realizing they’ve basically been in a relationship for a while, Peniss.
Thank you ❤️
OMG i tried to find the original ask or prompt but couldn't!!
For everyone reading: i'm still doing these!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖 (feed me, send me more!! lmao)
Modern, Blind date set up by mutual friends, ShikaTema.
hehehe I'd do this as a double pairing, shikatema and chokarui. They're set up by Ino, no photos, just names and personality description. Karui and Temari are friends with Ino, and so are Shikamaru and Chouji. None of the four are enthused so this is what they do; Temari and Karui agree to switch while Chouji and Shikamaru do the same. What ends up happening is Ino was right all along-- Romantic comedy!! (what do you think? should i write it after setting sun series?)
Canon or Canon divergence, Meet ugly, NaruHina.
Meet ugly! Alright! College AU: Party at Sakura's house that she rents with Ino and Hinata. Naruto eats something that doesn't suit his stomach and with all the drinking, he vomits. They haven't really met until this one particular hangout. Hinata is the only one in the group that isn't immediately grossed out. Naruto is embarrassed when she helps him clean up. They start to get to know each other after that. Cute and wholesome 10/10
Realizing they’ve basically been in a relationship for a while, Peeniss.
They are teachers in the same school! they have been for years, having little moments here and there, they're closer to each other in a way that the people in their lives can't fully seem to grasp. After all, they dealt with the bad milk apocalypse as a team. One day their families start asking each when they might try to meet someone and settle down, when they realize that to do so would mean to lose each other, or choose each other

For Ailin: 💤🌙🙊📎🌠
💤 SLEEPING - do they fall asleep easily? what helps them sleep?
On normal nights, sleep comes to Ailin easier than breathing. Although she loves to meditate herself to sleep, often knitting during her meditation.
🌙 MOON - what is your oc's greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it?
Prior to her brothers death and subsuquent acquisition of Fieysa, her greatest wish was to become the head archivist of the mandalorian section in the archives. Willing to do anything to achive it, she studied days and nights, vacations and holidays, sacrificing her social life much to the chagrin of her master.
All until her older brother, Tannon, died on a mission.
Having not spent much time with him, promising to hang out and explore the temple gardens with him once she gets knighted, she promises herself to be there for Fieysa as much as she can in Tannons place, promising to be like a second master to her.
Her greatest wish becomes protecting Fieysa, even if Ailin is only an archivist, she will protect her new little sister, even if it means the fall of the jedi... or just making sure Fieysa eats.
🙊 SPEAK-NO-EVIL - what is something your oc will refuse to stay quiet about?
The discrimination against mandalorian sources when it comes to their own history.
Especially after the war and events that transpired between a certain mandalorian goran and embassador, and chancelor palpatine, the republic and its historians are weary to look at mandalorian sources detailing their own history, only looking at the jedi acounts that were written through the subjective eyes of terrified and war torn jedi.
While Ailin understands the inherent unreliable narration of personal acounts in sources, she fights for the use of more mandalorian sources when in conversation of their history.
📎 PAPERCLIP - a random fact.
She is part of the padawan musical theatre group of the temple as a force technician. Using the force for "magical" transitions, stage props or costume changes.
🌠 SHOOTING STAR - if they could make any wish with no repercussions, what wish would they make?
She would wish for jedi and mandalorians to become one, or at least, be on good terms with eachother. Not only because of her wish to know more about sources being kept firmly locked on Mandalore, but also because her own family is very much intertwined and synonymous with mandalorians.
