btw not to make everything about My Fucking Guy but i honestly think one of the things that seperates q!phil out from the other islanders is the approach he takes to dealing with the lack of agency + control all the islanders have over whatever the fuck the federation's doing.

it shows up most prominently whenever tubbo is excitedly telling him about the 'progress' he's made with cucurucho or various investigations (ie: trapping him into a corner with the 'do you have free will' questions), and phil always shoots it down w an immediate 'that doesn't mean anything. curucuho will say anything to mess with you. you can't take anything he says as true.'

and it's not that phil is... a paticularly pessimistic character? he's just EXTREMELY practical. like, he's yet to give up on anyone EVER finding ANY answers (he was the one who initially gave the federation that one week ultimatum w the cage for a cage stream), he just doesn't trust the idea that curucuho is ever going to voluntarily give them. they're uncontrollable + senseless - you might as well argue with the weather.

and like, if that's how he sees the one (1) and only point of contact the islanders HAD with the federation for months, it explains a lot abt his characters lifestyle! ofc he sits on the wall all day, talking to his kids, and keeping his head down. he believes that the federation wants nothing more than to drag the islanders into sick games + tasks just so they can fuck with their head (ie: curucuho revealing he was the one cellbit gathered all that information for). and while he can't totally PREVENT any of that from ever impacting him, he can make sure his kids are well fed, well protected, and as happy + comfortable as he can manage. this is objectively not a perfect situation, there is a guaranteed amount of suffering + fear that he can't mitigate, but he can at least account for it.

like, he REFUSES to engage. whenever curucho shows up, he treats them with total ambivalence. he's not going to get riled up by anything they do, he's not going to get super attached to the guy, he's just gonna laugh it off and irish goodbye it when things drag on. the ONLY time he's strayed from that general guiding principle has been since he's lost his eggs, and can no longer afford to let the federation's fuckery go: those are his fucking kids.

hence the completely unprecedented levels of outward rage and sadness and terror he shows throughout the birdcage streams - almost all directed directly to cucurucho. it's all a completely fair + proportional response to the horror the islanders are being subjected to, but it feels so different bc until now, q!phil has been so dedicated to not reacting, and not giving the federation any sign that they're actually getting to him.

yep -- the same guy from the spongebob musical, and my posts abut the spongebob musical.

he blew up completely and now the general public knows him as 'ariana grande's new boyfriend' - their relationship seems to have started off the back of co-starring in the upcoming wicked musical film adaptation.

it's just been like. a monkey's paw curling sort of a way for him to get catapulted to fame, as i had always really enjoyed him as a performer (as spongebob, yes, but also in the other roles i'd seen him in,) and my biggest hope back around 2017 was that he would continue in and be really successful in theatre, get a lot of broadway roles, maybe take on some existing parts i thought he'd really suit, like seymour in little shop or ogie in waitress.......... but instead he booked the role of boq from wicked in a massive hollywood film production instead, where he met ariana grande. THE ariana grande.

and then yeah. at some point, he and grande broke up with their respective partners, (slater leaving both his wife AND newborn son) jumped into a new relationship, and now the whole wider internet knows who he is but certainly not for the right reasons.

there's been speculation regarding whether or not grande and slater had cheated on their previous partners before their relationship began with various sources coming out of the woodwork saying "yes they did" and others saying "no they didn't" -- humans are all perfectly capable of making stuff up, the media especially, so i simply don't know who to trust and i admit it had completely shattered my whole good impression of him - PLUS it gave the wider internet an absolutely awful first impression of him, resulting in, yeah, the (frankly, unflattering, sometimes downright cruel) memes of him popping up on twitter and, as i discovered yesterday, in non-theatre youtubers' videos who would literally never have heard of him if not for the slater-grande romance 🥲

I can't remember the last time I had something good to say about William, given his recent behavior, but if you told me a few months ago that I'd think he's an abuser on a level that rivals Charles's treatment of Diana in the 1980s, I would have been shocked.

At this point, the only thing that would make me think worse of him is if the cheating rumours were confirmed as true. He and the ROTA are really giving a masterclass on how to destroy your reputation and keep digging, because he's consistently exasperating these claims with his media image.

I always almost make a heavily researched and cited post abt this every election cycle but I think it would #1 piss many people off and #2 reach like seven people most of whom I've already monologued to about this but like. The thing about elections is that based on your priorities it can make a lot of sense to vote and it can make a lot of sense not to vote.

Last post being a key example. If you want something to happen that is executable through executive action and unlikely to be struck down by the courts (ie. Afghanistan withdrawl) then vote for a president. If you want more affordable housing in your neighborhood vote in local elections. If you want improvements to smth like publicly funded research vote for a democratic congressman (who will greenlight larger federal appropriations to things like r&d). All those things are like reasonably within the realm of possibility for democrats in government assuming you live in a competitive area of the country. But if like your #1 priority is abolishing prisons, it actually kinda doesn't make sense to #vote blue bc like. No one will do anything there. Same thing w immigration at this point (imo democratic immigration positions are like. Conservative immigration restrictions with less PR a lot of the time). Or like anarchism or smth. And while reasonable people can disagree on which issues have really different republican and democratic party positions there are some that are very very easy cases and I think people talk past each other with those different examples literally every election cycle.

And like hypothetically we should be able to approach that conversation about different priorities with mature understanding that different people have different emotional valances around different issues. And that's fine and normal. Like I would certainly prefer if more people cared abt like SCOTUS appointees and those people voted for a Democrat in 2016 but I can also understand why you wouldn't because at the end of the day there's a lot of bad shit happening and elections can even conceivably only fix a small portion of it.

tbt when i was in mutuals with someone who claimed to love a specific work of mine and always come back to it for comfort and clarity; the work heavily involved the complex (and bad / horror-based) relationship between a slave and the woman torturing him for thousands of years. and all of his feelings and the way he got fucked up over time and how that affected his relationships to other family members etc. it was a heart project full of good shit that i stand by, i was glad they liked it so much
