Puddles of artificial light glisten off the tiles which surround Dan Heng’s futon—or the mess of a thing it’s become.

Pillows and blankets bundle around him as he splays out on his stomach, tablet held in one hand, chin cradled in the other. He’s visibly rumpled, messy hair and worn expression at odds with the otherworldly beauty. He’s slipped off his mortal guide like a well-worn robe, tail snaking out onto the bedding from underneath a pillow that’s landed on the small of his back.

The robe he’s actually wearing has been shrugged off his shoulders, pale flesh exposed to your wandering gaze. Inky dark strands of past to expose the back of his neck, where healing bruises in the shape of your mouth mar his otherwise flawless skin. You only feel a little bad when you press your cold hand to his nape. 

He jumps, and glares. To offer him anything other than a smug little smile would be a lie.

“You look so sleepy,” you coo.

“I think I am plenty awake now,” he grouses, chiding. He lifts the duvet for you to climb under. anyways. 

“Don’t be mad at me—you’re just so sexy. I can’t keep my hands off of you,” you wheedle, settling against his side like an oversized cat. He runs a little cool, but you find it to be yet another charm point on the endless list. He smells good, too, recently out of the shower. You shamelessly press your face into his flank, right beneath his armpit, and nestle your cheek into the velvety down of his robe.

One of your greedy hands reaches over his thin waist to squeeze. You inhale him without remorse, practically purring as your fingers toy with the material of his robe, squeezing and rubbing the spot just above his hip. He huffs, but the sound is shaky, and he wraps an arm around you regardless, cradling you tight to him.

This, naturally, delights you to no end. There is no better place to be than hoarded close, huddled tight to him like a chick hidden beneath mother’s feathers. 

Unfortunately, even with your eyes closed, you can still detect the intrusive glow of the his screen. Peeking an eye open, ou see the artificial seaform light wobbling on the ceiling tile.

“Dan Heng,” you groan. It’s hell to extricate yourself from your cocoon, but you brave it, hefting yourself up on an elbow, shifting from your side to your stomach. Your touch glides up the smooth flesh of his forearm, and your forehead knocks into his shoulder.

“Just another minute, and then I will be done.” he promises.

“That’s what you said an hour ago, baby,” you murmur, thumb rubbing at the inside of his wrist. “All that blue light is bad for your eyes.”

Dan Heng, you know, is usually quite conscious of his health. Even should he remain awake through the graveyard hours, he’s sure to get an adequate amount of rest. Avoiding sleep, throwing himself into his research—it all points towards a single, dreadful conclusion. Something is bothering him, and he’s distracting himself in the most constructive way he knows how. 

And you could call him on it, but accusations have no place in his bed, among the soft duvets and the comforters he’s gradually filled the space with ever since the first night you slept together.

“Talk to me,” you murmur into his forearm, right beneath the round of his shoulder. You gently squeeze his wrist, urging it away from the tablet. 

Dan Heng considers you, but his eyes have gone soft in a way that lets you know you have won. A silent thrill of victory rushes through you when he powers it off and places it on the nearest counter, rearing out of his nest to do so, stood on his knees. It’s for only a moment, but he ducks back inside like a sunscorched wanderer dives for the shade. He wraps you both in pale blue and plush pillows, eager arms dragging you to his chest. You go willingly, happily, pressed to his bosom. Beneath you, his weary heart thrums a traveler’s beat. His tail, cool and gentle to the touch, twines around your thigh, then your calf.

Hands cramped from a long day of endless scrolling and searching settle, in the end, on dip of your lower back. 

“So,” you begin, once all of his fiddling and fussing has come to an end. “Have you been in the archives all day?”

“March and Caelus invited me to the dining car for lunch. I stretched my legs—and my hands every hour, before you ask.”

“Your hands are almost as important to you as they are to me, so you must take care of them well,” you declare solemnly, turning your head to admire his fine features. He gives a halfhearted eyeroll.

“I’m sure,” he says, curling his fingers against your back. He gazes down at you through half-lidded eyes, pale features washed by the starlight, illuminated by pale neon and blinking light. “And you?”

“What about me?”

“Did you eat well today?” he asks, softer this time. “You forgot lunch yesterday,” he reminds you pointedly. You open your mouth, but he cuts you off, eyes narrowing. “A bag of chips is not a suitable lunch.”

“I ate well! Welt and Himeko were nice enough to help with dinner.”

There’s a pause, then. Something dissatisfied but otherwise unreadable flickers across his face, quick as a minnow. 

“I’ll help, tomorrow,” he says, more a vow than an offer. His expression brokers no room for argument. You hold in a laugh, shutting your eyes with a smile. 

“Only if you really want to,” you murmur, pressing your ear to his chest, letting the sound of his heartbeat soothe the day’s leftover tensions and aches. “You’re not obligated—”

“I want to,” Dan Heng repeats, slower this time. More purposeful. His hands stroke up and down your back, thumbs spreading to squeeze your waist. You jump, just a little, and laugh, suddenly sheepish. 

“I’m glad,” You burrow your face into the crook of his neck, ears hot, cheeks ridiculously warm. You feel set adrift when you close your eyes. The waves are the steady rise and fall of his chest, his presence the depths, cool and clean. “ What would you like to make?”

“I had a few ideas—” Dan Heng begins. His voice, lastly, is the life preserver. You cling to it with warm hands and sleepy eyes. The waters lull you, but you keep your head above the beckoning grey, guided by the mere promise of another long conversation with him about nothing. "Tanghulu, maybe..."

Summary: Placing third in the nation can't ease the sting of defeat for Karasuno, especially for their captain.

Some part of Tadashi had thought that losing would get easier, either with the passage of time or with their team lasting longer in each tournament.

He couldn’t have been more wrong. It was foolish to feel disappointed in placing third in the nation, and he knew that, but it didn’t reduce the grief of losing. If anything, it hurt even more, getting so close to victory and losing it at the last moment.

And then there was the fact that this was his last Nationals tournament at Karasuno. In just a few weeks, he and the rest of the third years would be graduating, and Captain Yamaguchi would become just another memory.

He’d held strong through the team’s pack up at the gym and return to the inn, through the team dinner and review of the game, even through bathing with Hinata, Kageyama, and Tsukishima. But then he and Tsukishima left the bathing rooms, and before they returned to their futons, Tsukishima caught his wrist and tugged him in the opposite direction, towards the staircase that led to the inn’s entrance.

“Tsukki? Is everything alright?”

“Well…no,” Tsukishima huffed, practically falling to the first step, “but don’t worry about me. I just…” He looked up at Tadashi, who was startled to see concern in those golden eyes where he’d expected to see grief. “You haven’t given yourself any time to just…breathe since we…since we lost. So, I thought…”

It was disarming, seeing Tsukishima’s words fail him and leave him only able to gesture helplessly at the space next to him. It made Tadashi forget to hold back all of the disappointment and shame and grief of the day, and as soon as he sat next to Tsukishima, his next breath came on a heaving sob. He could only press his hands to his mouth in a sad attempt to hold back the sound.

He could hear Tsukishima stiffen next to him, and that just made the careful arm around his shoulders even more surprising. He followed its gentle press easily, until his face was being guided into the curve of Tsukishima’s neck. Only then could he let his hands fall from his lips and grab at Tsukishima’s pajama shirt as he muffled his weeping with his collar. When his fingers curled into the soft, worn fabric, he felt fingers start to gently comb through his hair, making him melt even more.

He didn’t know how he managed to find the air to speak, but he did, choking out, “I’m sorry…I’m sorry, Tsukki, we could’ve gone further, we could’ve won the whole thing, but I—”

“Don’t. Don’t you dare.” The firm words startled Tadashi’s sobs to a stop, leaving him with hiccups and sniffs. “We never would’ve made it this far without you as captain. We might not have even made it to Nationals without you.”

“You don’t have to exaggerate.”

“I’m not. Tadashi, look at me.” The sound of his given name in Tsukishima’s low voice still made Tadashi feel a jolt. A few months of dating hadn’t gotten rid of that thrill, especially when Tsukishima so rarely said it in public.

He slowly peeled his face away from Tsukishima’s shoulder to gaze at him with sore eyes. Tsukishima’s gaze flickered over his features for a moment, before he carefully cupped Tadashi’s cheeks in his hands and let his thumbs brush away the tears. “You’re an amazing captain. You have to believe that. No one else would have helped Hinakawa feel more confident on the court, or taught the first years how to serve so well, or kept the idiots from tearing each other apart—”

“Romantically or violently?”

“Is there really a difference?” Tadashi let out a weak, teary laugh, and his heart squeezed at the fond grin Tsukishima gave him. “We’ve been on this team since it was called ‘the wingless crows.’ You went from a benchwarmer to the captain, and now we’re third in the country. Losing sucks, but that doesn’t change the incredible work you’ve done.”

Tadashi’s hands covered Tsukishima’s, pressing them just a bit closer. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say so many nice things at once.”

“Call it boyfriend privilege.” Tsukishima’s grin wavered as he watched Tadashi. “…Are you okay?”

“As I can be,” Tadashi sighed, leaning in to rest their foreheads together. “You okay?”

“…As I can be,” Tsukishima echoed.

“Hey.”

“Hm?”

“You’re amazing, too. Our defense wouldn’t be a match for Date Tech without you building it. You’re going to be awesome for the Frogs.”

“God.” Tsukishima pulled away to lean on the wall, his hands sliding from Tadashi’s cheeks and his head falling back with a dull thud. “College and div two volleyball. This’ll be the end of me.”

“You’ll survive,” Tadashi giggled.

“Only because I’ll have you with me.”

His cheeks grew warm at the reminder of the apartment they had just found to move into together. “Yeah. Always.” He leaned in until their lips were a breath away, and waited for Tsukishima to close the distance.

Tsukishima watched him with a smile. “The team’s gonna wonder where we are.”

“Let them. One kiss, Tsukki.”

“So irresponsible, Captain,” he murmured, before pressing a soft kiss to Tadashi’s lips.

Tadashi was going to pull away after one, but a gentle hand at his neck kept him close, and one kiss turned into, two, three, four—

“Tsukki!” Tadashi laughed as he pushed away. “Now who’s irresponsible?”

Tsukishima just scoffed and obeyed Tadashi’s tug at his hands, following him to their feet. “You sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah. Thanks to you.”

“Good. C’mon.” With a soft smile and a hand still in Tadashi’s, Tsukishima led the way back to the sleeping room.

Defeat still lingered in Tadashi’s chest, but its tight pressure had eased with every soft word and smile from Tsukishima. And as they laid next to each other, and he watched those golden eyes slowly drift shut, Tadashi finally felt anticipation for the future and pride in the team they’d built gently wash over his disappointment.

“Tsukki,” he breathed, reaching out and tracing a finger down his cheek, “I love you.”

Sleep crept over him, and in the breath before he gave in, he heard the quietest whisper.

“Love you, too.”

I know this has been such a long time in the making! I was being OCD and wanted this to be perfect. As in, the perfect amount of care and fluff to heartmelt.

This little piece is a gift for @eliz1369, because she encouraged me to join tumblr. I found her amazing fanfiction "An Unearned Gift" and got to talking after some reviews. If you don't know that story, check it out! Like, now! I'm so grateful for her advising me to join this Hakuouki community. I'm still pretty new and learning the nuances here, but happy to know more fans of the franchise! Please enjoy this unashamedly fluffy piece.

"Nee! Chizuru-chan!" Okita called gently as he sat, legs nestled snugly into his futon, "Chi~zu~ru~cha~n!"

Her youthful face appeared around the open shoji door, her brows peeked upwards as her lips pursed in a small frown. He found himself smiling at the look, knowing she was in full attending stance. Just the attitude he had been hoping for. Yet, before he could make his desires known, she assailed him with many questions oozing concern like that of sticky dango syrup. Everly sweet and coating everything, including his patience.

"Is everything alright? Is it a bloodlust? The pillow too soft? Do you need another blanket? Or, are you hungry? I can fix you something-"

"Chizuru, shut up!" He begged with a laugh, shaking his head indulgently, "I couldn't sleep, so I wanted to see you. Can you spare a moment? I want something from you,"

She snapped her mouth closed, ducking her head as she shuffled into the room and sat beside his bed, eyes trained to the floor. Her cheeks tinted with red, she awaited his request with eagerness. He had been very sick once again, his consumption unhealed and ravaging his body though he had taken the ochimizu. She was disappointed the illness still remained after he had traded his humanity to battle once again. How many times could he be defeated before it broke her heart completely? He received loss every time he turned around, his only consolation having her by his side. Yet, she felt inadequate to comfort him, though her own heart strove to heal the pain mounting within his. She yearned to protect him, though she could lift neither fist nor sword to aid him. She only hoped she could soothe whatever newfound tragedies came their way.

Her eyes flitted up to match his gaze and her heart leapt within her chest. There was an uncanny expression softening his tea green eyes and turning up the corners of his lips. A fleeting thought coursed through her mind and surged through her veins, wondering what thoughts he harbored towards her to bestow such a look. Kindness gave him a beauty that caused her to ponder what being kissed felt like. She reddened all the further, shaming herself for the notion. She was solely supposed to focus on his health, not fantasize swooning in his arms and getting drawn into a passionate hold. Still, that warmth in his eyes fostered a yearning within her. She knew she loved him, though tried to conceal it. He was burdened with enough troubles as it was. She had to hide her pining, no matter how she felt. His health, his body and his heart were more important than her wishes. He was a sick man, and no amount of love could simply heal the death sentence tuberculosis gave.

"Nee, Chizuru," he called once again, placing his large hand over her petite one, calloused fingers stroking the backs of her own, "Since I can't sleep, could you si-sing to-to me? I-I can't seem to get the thought out of my-my head. You're voice always brings me such joy, it's so soft and feminine. There's this lullaby that I know. My... someone once sang it to me, and if you sang it, I'm sure I'd go right to sleep,"

She looked up to his face, eyes wide as her mouth formed a small circle of surprise. If the request wasn't unexpected, the sakura pink tinting his cheeks embarrassed certainly was. She felt her heart soften towards him, and an indulging smile spread upon her face. She nodded tenderly, taking his hand up in her own with an unexpected surge of courage and planted a light kiss on his knuckles. His eyes rounded in shock before he whipped his head away to stare pointedly at the wall. Whatever emotions her small act elicited, it was obvious they were strong. Perhaps, this affection was as mutual as she had hoped. This trying game of avoid the confession was bringing them nowhere, but neither relented in their secret. She was unsure where his feelings lay or to what extent their depths ranged. She was still too uncertain of his desires and therefore could not afford any more bravery than to be pulled into a hug, snuggle into his futon at night or random acts of tenderness towards him. It was all she could as yet muster.

He recovered slowly, his eyes darting to and from hers for a few beats before the blush subsided in his cheeks. His gaze finally settled upon her own and his eyes creased just as an adoring smile graced his handsome features. He drew his face towards her, heart pounding erratically within her chest as the distance was closed between them. With a sudden movement, Okita Souji flicked his tongue up her forehead, chortling at her squealing disgust. She shoved him away as roughly as she could manage, rubbing her sleeve vigilantly against the saliva coating her forehead.

He chose to fall back, pulling her down with him on a whim. She tried to shimmy out of his embrace for fear of another wetting, but froze as he cradled her within his arms.

"I'm sorry," he mumbled tenderly into her hair, feeling her body go lax, "You caught me so off-guard, I couldn't let you win, you know,"

"You licked me," she huffed, hiding her face in his chest, "That's absolutely gross,"

"You might change your mind, one day and hopefully soon. For now, let's just say we're even, as soon as you sing me to sleep," he smirked down fondly, eyes sparkling with mischief, "I'm supposed to recover, remember? How can I if you don't put me to sleep?"

She relented with a sigh and asked him to reveal this song some mysterious someone had supposedly sung to him. Hearing Okita-San sing tightened her heart within her chest. She was no expert on singing or the proper form used to do so, but breathless as the notes were, tears misted her eyes at the sound. His voice was perfect in her own perception and she stored the memory within her heart. It was a song nostalgic and reminiscent with her, but she couldn't place where she had heard it exactly. She simply knew every word, though it remained a mystery as to why. She joined in with him and, though it had to be a trick of the lamplight, could have sworn Okita-san's eyes were tearing as her own. She found herself lacing fingers into his bangs, allowing herself to fall into this strengthening bond with him. He placed a gentle hold on her wrist, kissing her palm before releasing her once again to pet his hair, requesting she continue.

It has to be love, she thought with a full heart, there can be nothing else to explain this. This connection, this bond we share, it has to be love. Maybe he doesn't know it yet, but I do. I want to remain by his side. I won't be leaving him, ever. Even if our time is short. Even if he will succumb to tuberculosis. I want nothing more than to be his, in whatever way he let's me.

She resumed the tune, his eyes growing heavy as fluttering blinks fought his sleepiness. Chizuru pulled her hand from his soft bangs to stroke his cheek and though he mumbled she was not playing fair, his eyes closed and he rested his face against hers with a contented sigh. A tear slipped from her eye, tracing over her nose to splash upon the bedding. There was an innocence and softness locked within this man. By gaining his trust, he allowed her to see everything he was and carefully revealed the softest parts of himself, which had once been reserved to cats and children. Inside he was frail, scared and though broken, also had a depth of goodness buried far beneath a past she was still discovering. She cherished him, praying silently as her nose and forehead remained against his, that somehow, he could be granted a little more time. She wanted to be allowed to love him, if only just a little longer. He appeared as innocent as a child and her heart burst for him. She cried the tears he could not indulge in.
