Something I want to bring to the next con I go to where there may be opportunities for Tiktoks! It’s usually really loud at events like cons, and several of the tiktokers I met (including myself) were having problems hearing the audios they wanted to do. Mine isn’t Bluetooth, but that’s okay with me, it means I save on my phone’s battery life. Tips for Getting Your Design Requests Chosen

Provide a clear reference picture! I can work from written descriptions but you will be happier with the final product if you give me a clear image to work from. If your reference is based off of a designer, an artist, a show, etc. - please cite your source so I can provide proper credits if needed.

I prefer doing designs that multiple people can use as opposed to just one individual. (Requesting a town flag is OK but recognize that if your town name/theme is too specific, I may skip your request.)

Avoid choosing overly complicated designs. If the design is too complicated to translate into QRs, I will tell you. If you'd like me to still attempt it, I will do my best but understand that I may need to change some things to make it work with the game limitations.

Keep in mind the color palette choices are limited. I love me some rainbows but know that the more colors the design has, the more difficult it will be to reproduce nicely in-game.

Bonus points for flexibility. I like coming up with cool designs too - just give me a general idea to run on and let me know what would be likes or dislikes with the design and I'll take it from there (e.g. "I want a blue dress to match the Lottie bun and would like for it to be long sleeve and have a bow on the back. I don't like V-neck designs.")

Bonus points for requests that pair with in-game accessories or are a unique or cool item customization request. Really like the purple-imp hood but don't have anything to wear with it this month? Have you always wanted to customize a cushion into a bag of gummy bears? Let's do it...

Bonus points for seasonal relevance. Let's get you some in-game Halloween costumes for October or tacky Christmas sweaters in December!

Bonus points for humor and/or "real world" items. Because let's face it, you may really need a Netflix loading screen showing off the latest season of Orange is the New Black for your house.... or you just REALLY love your job at Best Buy and really need your blue polo shirt in-game.

Minus points for things that have already been done well. I love Harry Potter house robes too but there are a million amazing QR codes out there already. We don't need a million and one.

Minus points for designs that will take an eternity. I am not opposed to doing path sets but as they take a LOT of time, I'd much rather knock out several clothing requests instead.

Design for a sustainable future

‘Sustainability’ is an imperative discussion in today’s world where environmental damage has reached unprecedented levels. I’ve started to notice how ‘Design’ can be the most effective solution provider for this inevitable crisis that we’re facing.

‘Sustainability’ may have somewhat different definitions according to each sector; but, in a general sense it means preserving and better managing resources, systems and processes  for more durability. What I hope to discuss today is how ‘design’ can be the answer to this massive, universally important problem we’re facing in trying to live more sustainably.

Californian design professor Nathan Shedroff, captured this well when he said: “Design is the problem as well as the solution”. Why is that? I have explained often in this very same column, how designers are the best available problem-solvers and solution-providers for any industry. This is because they are trained to make observations, understand needs/issues and provide creative, aesthetically pleasing and out-of-the-box solutions. ‘Design’ is not a ‘beautification process’; it is the very process that determines the materials, the manufacturing method, the finish, and even the way the product finally deteriorates on to earth without harming it. Therefore, it is this process of design that can influence the products and services we use and ensure they’re sustainable.  The success of future designers will be determined by how much they can deliver such sustainable design solutions.

How do we make sure, ‘designers’ will provide the solutions that the world needs? This is where ‘design education’ comes in –which is the very reason why I’m tackling this discussion on this column. While designers are our best available resource to secure a sustainable world for ourselves and our children, it won’t just happen. It will only happen if and when we create a generation of designers with design education geared to sustainability. To understand this better, let’s take a quote from the godfather of sustainable design, Victor Papanek; “There are professions more harmful than design, but only a few”. Papanek said this in 1972 at a time when design was part of a materialistic culture where designers produced more and more attractive products that could be easily replaced by even more attractive products. This generation of designers belonged to the age where the talk of sustainability was not as vital as today and therefore, had no education on sustainable design; it resulted in large amounts of unsustainable, unnecessary design. Therefore, it’s evident that although good designers are undoubtedly good problem-solvers, they will not be sustainably driven unless, they’re educated to do so.

How are designers taught to be sustainable? There are many ways. As a professional in the sector of design education, I have seen them achieve this through workshops, talks and special projects that set them the challenge of designing sustainably. But, what I see as most effective is, creating a genuine interest for sustainability by taking them to the source itself- this is to say study tours to rural areas where they will fall in love with nature and its beauty, opportunities to meet with traditional artisanal communities through whom they will get inspired to preserve these crafts for the future, collaborative projects with high-tech industries that manufacture sustainably and showing them the new possibilities for a better life though the correct use of technology.

This is the kind of education that I myself as a driver of local design education endorse, and it is what will secure a habitable home on this planet for us all and our children in the future.  So why not use the world’s most effective problem solver, ‘design’ to find solutions?
