Rough Trade NYC in photos
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today (Tuesday, January 19, 2021), the record store and venue named Rough Trade NYC announced they will leave their current location at 64 N.9th Street in Williamsburg. This news saddens me as I have been relying on Rough Trade NYC for new vinyl releases and was looking forward to catching more shows there after the pandemic.
I selected a few favorite images taken in that back room at the venue, along with including an image I took for a gallery on Gothamist before the store & venue opened to the public in November 2013.

GØGGS — Pre Strike Sweep (In the Red)

Not everything Ty Segall does is brilliant, but damned if he isn’t trying more stuff than most people even doodle in their notebooks. Last time I caught up with the Mr. Prolific, he was exploring his fuzzy, sleepy, Who Sells Out Syd Barrett material with Tim Presley, a.k.a. White Fence, and it was not wholly to my liking. It paled, I thought, next to his surprisingly disco-flavored Ty Segall Band album from a couple of months earlier, Freedom’s Goblin, with its undeniably awesome Hot Chocolate cover and Sabbath-into-Wipers onslaught “She.”  So be it. No one gets more than one great album a year.
Well, I may have to rethink that actually, because now Segall is at it again with his other friend Chris Shaw of the beautifully unhinged, razor toothed buzzsaw known as Ex Cult (once Sex Cult now Ex Cult, which is how things often go). He and Shaw are on round two of their opaquely named GØGGS project, enlisting Charles Moothart on drums and Michael Anderson on bass. It is as stark and desolate and defiant as a careen through a blasted bomb zone at midnight in a Pontiac Firebird with the headlights turned off.
If Presley brings out Segall’s fey, jangle-y, having-tea-parties-with-talking-animals side, Shaw abets his inner anarchist. Every cut is a blow torch, blasting full-force chemical fire. Shaw’s influence is palpable in the buzzing, rampaging, headlong rush of the riffery, the terse shout-y poetry, the physical punch of the rhythms. Elsewhere Segall may spin out into wiggy guitar solo-ry or hazard extended backwards-speaking psychedelia. Here everything is tight and disciplined, nailed down with the force of brutal four beats.
And yet, even so, this is not strict, anthemic, class of 1979 post-punk. There are slithery screams of feedback between the rattling downbeats. Brief volleys of guitar swagger ping-pong between slammed out boundaries. Brief, abrupt boogies skitter from one kick-drum thump to another, flash pot guitar gestures pose, freeze and disappear. Even hopped up “Space Rinse,” like the fastest cut on Reatard’s Blood Visions amped up to double speed, breaks for a sludgy, 1970s-metally bass riff. Aggressively misspelled “Dissapear” is all shoving, pushing, relentless riff, with little flickers of shreddery tucked into the corners.
It makes you wonder whether 1970s hard rock and the punk that displaced it were ever really at odds, or whether like competitive siblings, the two art forms just had to accentuate their differences. They co-exist here in flame and fury, egging each other on and stomping on each other’s toes, and if that doesn’t sound like a good time to you, there’s not much I can do for you.
