Full Name: Gabriel Alvarez
Age & Birthday: 50 years old, March 9th
Species: Shapeshifter - Coyote
Hometown: Sacramento, California
Current Residence: New York, New York
Occupation: Tracking and Safeguarding at Asphodel
DETAILS
PERSONALITY
Core Traits: Thoughtful, Calm, Patient, Persistent, Observant, Intuitive, Resourceful, Stubborn, Guarded, Narrow-Vision
HISTORY
Backstory:
Gabriel claims his life didn't really begin until he met Beatriz Garcia. They were young but there was no doubt in his mind that it was love. They supported one another and created a life built from respect and genuine devotion.
Gabriel worked in a small, overlooked corner of the justice system on a missing persons team that tried to find new leads on cold cases. Beatriz was a journalist and together they raised their son Rafael and Ines.
Their life was simple but a happy one, until Beatriz died a year ago. Gabriel was overwhelmed with grief, leaving his job only to become obsessed with piecing together little evidence of what killed his wife. In the process, he didn't see the impact this had on their children.
Finally, five months ago, Beatriz's sister convinced Gabriel to move to New York as there was a position at Asphodel. He reluctantly agreed, but he was able to see how a new start was drastically needed especially for his son and daughter.
Gabriel now works on the tracking and safeguarding team at the institute, particularly helping find supernaturals that may have been targeted in attacks or missing family members. It's close to home for Gabriel, which either makes him good at his job or obsessive.
CONNECTIONS
Potential Story Hooks: Anything in relation to piecing together attacks or those missing someone from their family, obviously. Has the potential to grow into something bigger. Gabriel is quite focused and one track minded so anything 'interesting' dangled in front of him, he will latch on. This could also lead into anything that has enough of a mystery to make him interested. General growth will be him dealing with grief and mending the emotional bridges between him and his children.

Full Name: Gabriel Alvarez
Age & Birthday: 49, April 2nd
Species: Lone Werewolf
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
Current Residence: New York City, NY
Occupation: Carpenter / Information Broker
Institute: N/a
DETAILS
Core Traits: Calm, Stubborn, Guarded, Protective, Solitary, Independent, Narrow-Minded, Helpful, Confident
Strengths: Gabriel is an experienced combatant, trained extensively by his pack in both physical and strategic combat. His role as an information broker has honed his ability to read people, uncover secrets, and navigate complex situations. Once Gabriel commits to someone or something, he’s fiercely protective and dedicated, especially when it comes to Ines.
Weaknesses: His upbringing in an elitist pack has left lingering biases, making it difficult for him to fully trust other species. Gabriel’s solitary nature makes it hard for him to form close connections, even with those who try to help. His work as an information broker has made him a target for numerous supernatural factions, leaving him vulnerable to retaliation.
Philosophy/Worldview: Gabriel sees the supernatural world as inherently dangerous and fractured, with alliances built on shaky ground. He believes survival depends on staying vigilant and maintaining independence.
HISTORY
Backstory:
Gabriel was born into a werewolf pack in San Antonio that prided itself on elitist ideals, claiming lineage from the revered Dusk Wolves. The pack's lifestyle revolved around strict indoctrination and relentless training, fostering distrust of other supernaturals especially vampires, viewed as threats, and shifters, seen as inferior. Gabriel’s allegiance to these beliefs began to waver when he met Beatriz, a shifter. Defying his pack, he left them behind, becoming a lone wolf to marry her. Though a fragile truce was established between Gabriel and his family, it came with a harsh stipulation that he could never return.
Gabriel and Beatriz welcomed their daughter, Ines, into the world, but their marriage was far from smooth. Gabriel’s solitary nature clashed with Beatriz’s secretive and guarded demeanor, creating tension that caused them to drift apart. By the time Ines turned ten, the couple divorced, and Beatriz moved to New York City with their daughter to be closer to her family. Gabriel made an effort to stay connected, arranging visits whenever possible, but his relationship with Ines remained distant and strained.
Despite leaving his pack behind, some of its beliefs lingered in Gabriel’s mindset. He worked as a skilled carpenter but became, accidentally, an information broker. He provided hunters and witches with intelligence on supernatural threats, working across species lines without fully aligning himself with any one group. A year ago, after Beatriz’s death, Gabriel left behind his life in Texas and moved to New York to be closer to Ines. He was determined to give her the support he had failed to provide during her childhood. Their relationship didn’t heal overnight, but with time and effort, it has grown into something far healthier than it ever was. Gabriel’s primary focus now is ensuring Ines’s safety, though he wrestles with the fear that his work as an information broker for supernaturals might inadvertently put her in danger.
Secrets and Mysteries: Before leaving his pack, Gabriel fought the Beta who discovered his relationship with Beatriz and threatened her life. This act is why his exile was absolute. His family helped him cover the death, framing an enemy vampire coven and allowed Gabriel to leave quietly rather than expose the truth to the pack. These actions haunt him, and he fears the pack might still seek vengeance if it’s ever revealed. While married to Beatriz, Gabriel had an affair with another woman and fathered a child. This infidelity was a strong driving force for their divorce and the reason why Beatriz moved to New York City. She never told Ines and though this child lives far from New York and doesn’t know about Gabriel, he occasionally sends money and keeps tabs on them. The existence of this child is a closely guarded secret, and he fears the fallout if Ines ever learns the truth.
Current Situation:
Gabriel was with a group of vampires when the rift tore open, sharing intelligence about a potential threat to their coven. The rift’s chaotic energy turned the vampires rabid and feral, forcing Gabriel into a brutal fight for his life. Overcome by his own heightened rage and untamed werewolf instincts, he was left with no choice but to kill a newly turned vampire in self defense.
Since that night, Gabriel has been lying low, anticipating retaliation from the coven and preparing for the inevitable fallout. The incident left him deeply wary of the veil and its mysteries, driving him to uncover more about its nature. At the same time, he struggles with an unsettling loss of control over himself, his instincts sharper and harder to suppress than ever before.
CONNECTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
Allies: Supernaturals who act as go-betweens for supernatural disputes. They value Gabriel’s information but keep their own motives carefully hidden. Individuals or groups who appreciate Gabriel’s intel on supernatural threats and offer protection in exchange for his help. Other lone wolves who sympathize with his situation and offer occasional assistance.
Rivals/Enemies: The vampires Gabriel was working with when the rift opened. Though Gabriel’s exile was covered up, some members suspect the truth about his actions and may seek to expose or punish him.
Important Relationships: Ines, Anyone he's worked with, family from pack or people might've known and worked with Beatriz.
Potential Story Hooks: Anything to do with his pack, the vampires and discovering information to do with the veil. Gabriel can easily end up working for Heralds without realizing, or aiding people he would usually distrust while they search for clues. Uncovering truth about Beatriz and obviously his other child showing up.

Character Name: Gabriel Alvarez
Character Age & Birthday: 49 years old, April 2nd
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
Pre-2024 Occupation: Carpenter
Current Role: Scout, handyman
Current Time with Group: November 2024
Immunity Status: Not Immune
DETAILS
Past:
Before 2024, Gabriel built a reputation as a skilled carpenter, working on homes and small businesses with care and precision. In his free time, he often volunteered at local shelters, teaching woodworking to at-risk youth and finding purpose in helping others. However, Gabriel’s personal life was far from stable. His marriage to Beatriz was tumultuous, marked by unpredictable emotions and constant tension. When they became parents, their relationship only grew more strained, with Gabriel often retreating emotionally to avoid conflict.
Their eventual divorce was just as messy as their marriage, and by the end, Gabriel didn’t have the energy or resources to fight for full custody of their daughter, Ines. At just five years old, Ines moved to Arizona with Beatriz, while Gabriel stayed behind in San Antonio. He tried to stay involved, arranging visits and letting her stay with him occasionally, but over the years, their relationship became distant.
Gabriel’s greatest regret came later when he learned that Beatriz’s life had begun to spiral. He hadn’t stepped in when he heard she was struggling, and by then, it was too late. Ines had gone to live with Beatriz’s brother, Diego, and his wife, Carina, in New York when she was ten. To this day, Gabriel carries the heavy weight of guilt, seeing himself as a failure as a father for not being there when Ines needed him most.
January 2024:
Gabriel was at home having dinner with his sister when the outbreak began. At first, they decided to hunker down, hoping to ride out the chaos. But as supplies dwindled and the situation outside worsened, they had no choice but to leave. For Gabriel, there was only one goal: getting to New York. He didn’t care that a major city was likely one of the worst places to be; his focus was entirely on finding his daughter, Ines.
He and his sister managed to survive well enough, moving cautiously through the chaos, scavenging where they could. By April, they had made it to West Virginia, where they crossed paths with a group that included Diego and Carina, Ines’s aunt and uncle. Gabriel’s relief was short-lived when he discovered there was no sign of Ines. The group explained that the last time she was seen, they had urged her to leave New York, knowing the city was becoming increasingly dangerous.
It took some convincing for Gabriel to stay with the group. His instinct was to keep searching, to press on despite the risks, but the reassurance that Ines had been urged to leave New York gave him a glimmer of hope. For now, he remains with the group, driven by the belief that staying alive and moving forward is his best chance of finding her.
Now:
Since April, Gabriel has gradually retreated into his cynicism, losing hope with each passing day as the group moves farther from New York. His resentment toward Carina and Diego is obvious for anyone to see. To keep his thoughts from spiraling, he throws himself into work, tirelessly taking on tasks to distract himself.
While he functions as a dependable team player with the group, his demeanor leaves much to be desired. Many members may find him unapproachable, his guarded and often irritable personality creating a wall that few feel comfortable crossing.
Personality:
Gabriel is a complicated person. On the surface, he comes across as hard to read and someone who might be difficult to have a deep conversation with. However, beneath that exterior he has strong values and a tireless work ethic. He can be quietly protective, often sacrificing his own comfort for the sake of others in subtle ways. He offers up his food while claiming he isn’t hungry or taking people's tasks so they can rest while he stays busy. While he can be gruff, pointed, and emotionally closed off, there’s an undeniable undercurrent of loneliness and sadness in the way he views the world.
Weapons: Hatchet: Practical and versatile, used for both combat and repairs.
Lever-action rifle: Reliable for mid-range defense and hunting.
Hammer: Always on hand, doubling as a weapon and tool.
Homemade spike traps: A reflection of his skill in crafting and fortification, he's created some on a spring that he can throw to create temporary relief against a large group of dead.
Relic: A small wooden cat figurine he carved for Ines when she came to stay. She helped him with it, and the tail is slightly crooked as a result. She never took it back to Arizona with her but Gabriel has kept it in his pocket for years.
CONNECTIONS
Sister: Gabriel's sister is one of the few who can coax a rare smile from Gabriel, and she's often one of the first people to predict when one of his infamous moods are about to take place. Gabriel trusts her completely, often preferring to work with her than others with the group.
Diego & Carina: Gabriel finds himself balancing resentment and gratitude for Diego and Carina. He's grateful they looked after Ines, though it reminds him of his shortcomings as a father. He resents them for being unable to keep her safe during the outbreak, despite knowing this is an unrealistic feeling to carry. Their interactions are often tense and short.
Someone who potentially traveled with Ines and Jakob: They could become someone Gabriel ends up warming to, because of the connection to Ines and it giving him a slight hope she's with someone and alive. Could also make Felix feel hopeful about Jakob too. Or, an at-risk youth Gabriel previously taught carpentry would be great and be like a reluctant care vibe.
