As we are preparing garlic for planting, removing the layers, we are adding layers to our mummy themed scarecrow! Scarecrows were first discovered in Egypt so I think a mummy scarecrow is a great way to tie it all together. Each child got to wrap our new scarecrow with gauze. We placed the scarecrow next to the okra that's still growing in the garden. In the garden we washed the kale and used our observation skills to notice some interesting changes. When we dipped the kale into the water the kale looks like it turned silver! We discovered that the kale seems to repel water. We talked about scientists and how they might study nature to problem-solve and discover new technology. This is a great observation lesson that can easily be taught and explored in the classroom again and again. Farm to school highlight - teachers enjoyed kale bean dip! So much to do with celery! Cut and put leafy stalk in colored water. Watch the tips of leaves change color in 30min-2hrs, showing the straw like function of stems (try different colors to see what shows faster). Use bottom as a stamp to make floral designs or put the bottom in water and root/regrow. Cut stalk and make letter shapes like C, U, M, W, O, E, the numbers 3 and 8. Taste test celery. It's Crunchy and that word starts with C. The organic celery has a stronger flavor.
