Art Fight 2024 - Round 12!

After taking the weekend off due to a combination of being busy and The Horrors, I was able to get back to some revenges yesterday! As it stands now, I am tied with my all-time Art Fight attack record, set last year, so everything else from here on out is uncharted territory lmao

If I keep up my three attacks per day with revenges every other day, and if I don't get any more non-revenge chain attacks in that time (and that's a big if) I MIGHT be able to revenge all of the attacks I've gotten haha. I'm not making any promises, but I'm saying there's a chance lmao

Let’s talk about the Adapter Pattern

In this post, we are going to see what is the Adapter pattern and how we can use it. Let's get into it!

The Adapter pattern is a Structural pattern. This kind of pattern is related the relationships between entities.

The Adapter pattern allows us to make classes work together that otherwise couldn't because of incompatible interfaces. Thus, the classes can work with each other without us having to modify their source code.

A very straightforward example in real life is the power adapter: a three-pin plug can't be connected to a two-prong outlet.

This pattern can be really useful when we want to use an existing class and its interface doesn't match the one we need.

Now let's have a quick example and because it is always more fun, we are going to say that we are building a video game (and for the sake of this example we are going to do it with PHP).

In our brand new game we have a space hunter which is navigating through the entire galaxy killing dangerous aliens with his bare hands. Now for some reasons, that same guy needs to fight with a dragon. The problem is that the dragon interface is different from the one used with aliens. So we can use the Adapter pattern to make it works.

First, we create our SpaceHunter class that expects any implementation of AlienInterface to kill:

Now, let's define our AlienInterface and different types of aliens:

Then, we can define our DragonInterface and a concrete implementation:

And now we can create our Adapter:
