Vietnam's Garco 10 joins ITMF as Corporate Member
Tumblr media
Established in 1946 in Viet Bac (northern region of Vietnam), Garco 10 initially focused on making military uniforms. Today, Garco 10 is one of the largest enterprises in Vietnam’s apparel and textile industry with a total of 19 factories. They manufacture and export nearly 30 million garments per year.
Founded in 1904, the ITMF is the international forum of the global textile value chain for producers of fiber to finished products. Its members are from textile and apparel-producing countries representing approximately 90% of global production.
Mr. Than Duc Viet, CEO of Garment 10 Corporation said that “being part of an international forum like ITMF that represents the entire textile value chain – from fibre to finished goods – is very valuable. Having access to an international network like ITMF provides Garco 10 access to companies and people from around the world in a cooperative environment.
Furthermore, it is important to follow and to be part of the discussions about trends and initiatives in our industry. The publications, reports and surveys that ITMF produces are helping us to better understand the underlying dynamics in our industry”.
“We are delighted that Garco 10 is joining ITMF as a Corporate Member. Garco 10 is a leading producer and exporter of garments in Vietnam. Becoming part of the ITMF family will be mutually beneficial as it will provide an additional perspective on Vietnam for members of ITMF as it will provide Garco 10 with insights of other markets. The global textile and apparel industry is constantly undergoing structural changes – sometimes slower and sometimes faster. Currently, the changes and dynamics are unprecedented and therefore an international forum for exchange and discussion is providing added value ”, stated Dr. Christian Schindler, Director General of ITMF.

Richard Conte drives the 'Thieves' Highway' on Criterion Channel
Richard Conte drives the ‘Thieves’ Highway’ on Criterion Channel
I like to think of Thieves’ Highway (1949), set in the cutthroat world of long haul trucking and independent drivers, as “trucker noir.” Richard Conte is Nick Garcos, a World War II veteran who returns home to Fresno after years at sea to find that his immigrant father, a truck driver eking out a living in the California produce market, has been crippled by a crooked San Francisco produce…

Lee R Bates Snitched on GARCO in ELLENSBURG
Lee R Bates Snitched on GARCO in ELLENSBURG
"I take daily walks in our neighborhood. The Ellensburg School District has hired said company to do preliminary site work for school construction. Early this afternoon returning to my home I was passing the work site. Three male construction workers were in very close proximity. Two men were almost shoulder to shoulder talking to another worker who was seated in a pickup. None wre waring a mask…

Garco by Harvey Chapman Jr. (1953), Garrett Supply Company, Los Angeles, CA. Garco was one of the first attempts at creating a general-purpose industrial humanoid robot, "taking on a variety of tasks that would prove too dangerous for humans. Mixing the ingredients for TNT is one. If the stuff should blow up, you could install another robot and continue the job without much loss. Garco could work efficiently in a vacuum, in temperatures that would burn or freeze a man, handle radioactive elements without endangering anyone, or labor for hours on end under water" (Harvey Chapman Jr). In the final image above, Chapman can be seen controlling Garco via a five-jointed control arm. Each of Garco’s arms contain five tiny actuator motors. Three apply torque, representing the ball joints of a man’s shoulder and elbow; the others, taking the place of tendons, apply linear push and pull. As Chapman twists and turns his own arm, and the control arm along with it, Garco’s right arm moves in exactly the same way. However, GARCO couldn't escape the sci-fi imaginings of the public and was drafted into being “Hollywood’s first mechanical press agent” for the 1954 sci-fi movie, "Gog". In the top photo, Garco is pictured with actress Sally Mansfield, supposedly typing out a press release, though disappointingly neither of them actually star in the movie. Garco subsequently appeared in "Science Fiction Theater," and alongside Walt Disney (second photo) introducing "Mars and Beyond" for the “Tomorrowland” segment of the Disneyland television show on ABC (1957).
