Dozens of construction workers have been pulled out alive from metal containers after they were buried by an avalanche in the Himalayas in India's Uttarakhand state.
They survived - some as long as nearly two days - as the containers in which they were living had enough oxygen to sustain them until rescuers could dig them out, Indian media reported quoting officials.
On Friday, 54 workers were buried when the avalanche hit a construction camp near Mana village. Eight were killed, while the other 46 were rescued.
The operation lasted almost 60 hours in sub-zero temperatures and concluded on Sunday.
Most of the labourers, who were working on a highway expansion project, were able to "withstand the wrecking avalanche" because of the containers, rescuers told The Indian Express newspaper.
"These metal shelters saved most of them. They had just enough oxygen to hold on until we got them out," a senior rescue official told The Times of India.
The newspaper reported that the force of the avalanche had hurled eight metal containers and a shed down the mountain.
Uttarakhand state Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has thanked rescue teams for their efforts in challenging conditions.
Members of the Indian army, national and state disaster response forces and local administration had worked to free the workers, using helicopters and drones for the operation.
Many of the rescued workers are receiving treatment at hospitals in the state's Joshimath town and Rishikesh city.
Satyaprakash Yadav, a migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh who was among those rescued, said the "avalanche hit our container like a landslide", according to a video released by the army.
He added that the container he was in broke apart when the snow hit and it ended up near a river.
"We managed to get out on our own and reached a nearby army guest house, where we stayed overnight," he added.
Rajnish Kumar, a worker from Uttarkhand's Pithoragarh town, said most of them were sleeping when the avalanche struck.
"When the snow hit the container, it sank about 50 to 60 metres down [the mountain]. The Army arrived quickly and rescued us," he said, according to the army video.
Gaurav Kunwar, a former village council member of Mana, told the BBC on Friday the area where the avalanche hit was a "migratory area" and that it had no permanent residents.
"Only labourers working on border roads stay there in the winter," he said, adding that it had rained for two days prior to the avalanche.
The India Meteorological Department has warned of rainfall and snow in the northern states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, as well as Jammu and Kashmir until Tuesday.
Avalanches and landslides are common in the higher regions of the Himalayas, especially during winter.
Experts say that climate change has made extreme weather more severe and less predictable. There has also been a rapid rise in deforestation and construction in Uttarakhand's hilly areas in recent years.
In 2021, nearly 100 people died in Uttarakhand after a piece of a Himalayan glacier fell into the river, triggering flash floods.

Vlogger Jyoti Rani Malhotra Arrested for Allegedly Spying for Pakistan; Two More Held in Punjab
Popular travel vlogger Jyoti Rani Malhotra from Haryana has been arrested for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistani intelligence. The 33-year-old, who runs a YouTube channel called Travel with Jo, was taken into custody on Friday after being monitored by Indian intelligence for some time.
Vlogger Was Under Surveillance
According to Hisar Superintendent of Police Shashank Kumar Sawan, Malhotra had been on their radar for a while. She was arrested after central agencies provided inputs. She is currently in five-day police custody as investigations continue.
Malhotra has over 3.77 lakh subscribers on YouTube and more than 1.32 lakh followers on Instagram. Police say she was in regular contact with an official from the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi and had visited Pakistan several times. One of those trips was reportedly sponsored, and she is believed to have met influential people there.
Questions Around Income and Intentions
While she didn’t have access to direct military secrets, officials said Hisar is a sensitive location. Authorities are looking into her travel history and financial records, which showed more spending than her known income.
“She might have fallen into a trap in search of views and followers,” said the SP. “Many influencers don’t understand the serious consequences of their actions.”
Her mobile phone and laptop are being examined to determine what kind of information may have been shared and with whom.
Malhotra has been charged under the Official Secrets Act and a section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with acts against India’s unity and security. She is also being questioned by national intelligence agencies.
Police say she told them during questioning that she visited the Pakistan High Commission in 2023 to apply for a visa. There, she met a staff member named Ehsan-ur-Rahim, also known as Danish, who kept in touch with her afterward. Danish was later expelled from India on charges of spying.
More Arrests in Punjab
In a related development, Punjab Police arrested two more people, Sukhpreet Singh and Karanbir Singh, for allegedly leaking military information to Pakistan’s spy agency, ISI. This brings the total number of such arrests in Punjab to six.
According to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, the two men shared details about troop movements and military locations in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. Police recovered mobile phones and live bullets from them. Early investigations suggest they were in direct contact with Pakistani handlers.
Network of Informants Uncovered
These arrests follow the earlier capture of Guzala and Yameen Mohammad in Malerkotla. Guzala reportedly met Danish in February at the Pakistan High Commission and later began sharing details about Indian Army activities. Yameen allegedly helped transfer money to her on Danish’s instructions.
Two more people were caught after that – a tailor named Rakib from a military station in Bathinda, and Neeraj Kumar from Pathankot, who reportedly helped Pakistani agents get access to an Indian SIM card.
Social Media and Modern Espionage
Police believe these incidents show a shift in how spying is carried out today. “It’s no longer just about borders,” said SP Sawan. “Now, it also involves using social media and civilians to gather and spread information.”
Investigations are ongoing as authorities try to uncover the full extent of the network and how deep it runs. Read latest news India in Hindi by subscribing our newsletter!

Most toppers emphasize the importance of having a clear plan before starting their preparation. For example:

2. Master the Syllabus
Understanding the syllabus in detail is the first step to success:
Kanishak Kataria (AIR 1, 2018): Kanishak studied the UPSC syllabus thoroughly and aligned all his resources, notes, and preparation around it.
Lesson: Keep a copy of the syllabus handy and use it as your guiding framework for preparation.
3. Choose Your Optional Wisely
The optional subject plays a critical role in scoring well in the Mains exam:
Gaurav Agarwal (AIR 1, 2013): Gaurav, an IIT graduate, chose Economics as his optional, leveraging his strengths and interest in the subject.
Lesson: Choose an optional subject based on interest, background, and availability of resources.
4. Consistency is More Important Than Hours
Toppers often stress the need for consistency in preparation:
Tina Dabi (AIR 1, 2015): Tina maintained a disciplined routine, studying regularly for 6-8 hours while balancing breaks and leisure time.
Lesson: Avoid burnout by setting a daily study routine that is consistent and sustainable.
5. Effective Note-Making
Smart note-making helps in quick revisions and retention:
Akshat Jain (AIR 2, 2018): Akshat made concise notes for every subject, focusing on keywords, mind maps, and current affairs integration.
Lesson: Develop a personalized note-making system that works for you.
6. Stay Updated with Current Affairs
Toppers integrate current affairs into their answers effectively:
Pradeep Singh (AIR 1, 2019): Pradeep dedicated 1-2 hours daily to newspapers, magazines, and government reports like PIB and Yojana.
Lesson: Make current affairs a daily habit and connect it to static topics in the syllabus.
7. Write and Practice Answer Writing
Answer writing is the backbone of Mains preparation:
Artika Shukla (AIR 4, 2015): Artika practiced answer writing regularly, focusing on time management, structure, and presentation.
Lesson: Join a test series and practice writing answers under exam conditions to improve your speed and quality.
8. Take Mock Tests Seriously
Mock tests help identify strengths and weaknesses:
Shubham Kumar (AIR 1, 2020): Shubham attempted multiple mock tests for both Prelims and Mains, analyzing his mistakes and improving weak areas.
Lesson: Simulate exam conditions by taking mock tests and learn from your mistakes.
9. Balance Between Study and Mental Health
Maintaining mental and physical well-being is crucial for long-term preparation:
Shruti Sharma (AIR 1, 2021): Shruti balanced her studies with meditation, exercise, and regular breaks to avoid stress and stay focused.
Lesson: Prioritize physical fitness and mental health to maintain productivity.
10. Learn from Failures and Persevere
Many toppers did not succeed on their first attempt but used failure as a stepping stone:
Nandini K R (AIR 1, 2016): Nandini failed in her first attempt but learned from her mistakes and came back stronger.
Lesson: Treat failures as learning opportunities and never give up.
Common Themes Across All Success Stories
Self-Belief: Toppers believe in their abilities and stay motivated despite challenges.
Discipline and Hard Work: Consistent efforts and a disciplined approach are key.
Smart Work: Toppers focus on quality over quantity, using strategic approaches like note-making, mock tests, and time management.
Personalized Strategy: Each topper follows a plan that works for them, based on their strengths and weaknesses.
The success stories of IAS toppers serve as a reminder that with determination, consistency, and smart preparation, anyone can achieve their dream of becoming a civil servant. The key is to learn from their journeys, adapt their strategies to your needs, and remain focused on your goal.
Your preparation journey may be unique, but the lessons from these success stories will guide you towards success. Keep working hard, stay positive, and believe in yourself—your success story could be the next one to inspire future aspirants!
