60 years ago today, on June 3, 1965, astronaut Ed White performed the first American spacewalk aboard Gemini IV. A test of man's ability to maneuver in space, White utilized both the attached tether and a small gas-propelled gun called the handheld self-maneuvering unit to control his movement in space. This critical first spacewalk, or EVA, would pave the way for longer, more complex spacewalks during the Gemini program, all in preparation for the EVAs of Apollo.

White died on 27 January 1967, along with Gus Grissom and Roger B Chaffee, during a pre-launch test for Apollo I.

Robert McCall died on 26 February 2010.

White Earth Limb by NASA on The Commons Via Flickr: Edward H. White II, pilot of the Gemini 4 spacecraft, floats in the zero gravity of space with an earth limb backdrop. The extravehicular activity was performed during the third revolution of the Gemini 4 spacecraft and represents the first time an American has stepped outside the confines of his spacecraft. White is attached to the spacecraft by a 25-ft. umbilical line and a 23-ft. tether line, both wrapped in gold tape to form one cord. In his right hand White carries a Hand-Held Self-Maneuvering Unit (HHSMU). The visor of his helmet is gold plated to protect him from the unfiltered rays of the sun. Oh my god y'all. Lunar failing to master his powers and being given the death penalty. Gemini is the one who has to kill him. They're standing in front of him, hesitating, waiting for him to run, but he just gives them a hug. He can feel whatever weapon they're wielding pressing against his back casing while they're hugging, but they're hand is shaking like they don't wanna do it. He tells them to just do it, that he can handle it. They still hesitate. He tells them he loves them and that him being alive was only holding them back, tells them to go do great things. They're crying at this point, completely unsure of what to do.
