Imagine if the snake men were allowed the same level of variety as the Serpentine from Ninjago
Hang on a sec I gotta google something-
Tumblr media
...I'm gonna assume this Ask is specifically in reference to the Snakemen as depicted in the newer CGI/Core Masters of the Universe.
Because in the 200x version, the Snakemen did have the same level of variety as the Serpentine from Ninjago (as far as a 1 minute google search was able to show me).

Masters of the Universe: Snake and Lizard Men
Reptilian humanoids started appearing in MotU in the first, 1983, season of the Filmation cartoon.
Tumblr media
Here’s Lizard Man, a supporting hero who appeared in four episodes.
Tumblr media
Here is Fang Man, a bad guy who only appeared in “The Time Corridor”.
Bands of unnamed reptile men then appeared as wizards’ henchmen in two episodes, “House of Shokoti” and “Ordeal in the Darklands”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So it already looks like we have two races of lizard people on Eternia. In Season 2, Kobra Khan was introduced.
Tumblr media
In the very last episode, “The Cold Zone”, writer J. Michael Straczynski revealed that Kobra Khan had left the underground Repton civilization to commit crimes with Skeletor and friends. While their name was generically reptilian, named characters such as King Pythos indicate the entire people’s snakiness.
Tumblr media
In 1986, the Snake Men faction was introduced to the toy line and its accompanying mini-comics. Members King Hiss, Sssqueeze and Snake Face were treated as having been banished by the Elders to a timeless dimension while living their evil lives thousands of years ago. Writer Steven Grant alluded to Kobra Khan’s people as descendants.
Tumblr media
However, by the time kids would have opened this comic, the entire first season of (literal) sister show She-Ra would have aired, in September-December 1985. There, two other characters identified as Snake Men, Rattlor and Tung Lashor, were seen as members of Hordak’s Etherian Horde.
Tumblr media
Both the mini-comic “King of the Snake Men” and newspaper comic arc “Vengeance of the Viper King” addressed these two being magically teleported from Etheria to Eternia to join King Hiss.
Unnamed Snake Men made two further appearances in the 80s: as hunter-gatherers who preceded Eternia’s first humans on the planet in the newspaper comic arc “Terror Takes Time” and as disorganized enemies of the five good wizards (Elders?) who organized under Hordak in the Power Tour stage show.
So much for official Snake Men. But we’re not done:
Tumblr media
Almost simultaneously with him joining the Snake Men, Kobra Khan was seen commanding a band of evil lizard men (not to be confused with Lizard Man the hero) in the mini-comic “The Fastest Draw in the Universe”.
Jump forward to the summer of 1987 and fans were introduced to Saurod, a blue-scaled, bronze-armored mercenary employed by Skeletor in the live action film. He also appeared in all sorts of comics (mini-comic with the 3 film-related action figures, monthly comic, newspaper comic).
Tumblr media
(pictured: Classics toy from 2015.)
While his armor looks like a fuller version of the partial plate armor we saw in the Repton culture, whether he was even native to Eternia was not explained at the time.
Then there’s one more before the Classics era. When He-Man traveled to another solar system in The New Adventures of He-Man, the Mutants of Denebria has their own lizard person, Lizorr.
Tumblr media
He was said to be from the Gorn Desert of Denebria (a homage to the original Star Trek’s reptilian Gorn). His name suggests there’s no connection between his people and any Eternian Snake Men who ended up making their homes on Horde planets in the past two millennia or more.

2021 MOTU Snake Men headcanons
Nobody can really tell me I'm wrong about these so far, so I'll continue to believe them until someone contradicts me.
The Snake Men call themselves "The Sons of Serpos" and believe that Serpos is a primordial mother goddess who was the broodmother of the first snakes. Other Eternians shorten it and just call them all Serpos.
Tung Lashor and Rattlor were generals in King Hsss' army that were the templates for the magically created Lasher and Rattler gestalt forms.
The giant snake that Skeletor unleashed in Leviathae was a Kobra Khan, and there was also a Kobra Khan individual in the past.
Serpos' fossilized corpse is Snake Mountain, just like in the 200x series. Dunno if she could come back to life in this version, though.

My Headcanon scene after Tung Lashor’s fight with Catra
Tung Lashor: I cannot believe I lossst to a ssssstupid FELINE! How can I expect to sssshow my face around the Wasssstesss ever again!?
One of Lashor’s lackies: Ummmmm, boss?
Tung Lashor: WHAT!? WHAT COULD IT POSSSSIBLY BE NOW?
?: So, this is where I find you after all these years, from an elite member of the Snake Men to low-life thug. Quite the step down, eh, Tung Lashor?
Tung Lashor turns around to see General Rattlor flanked by Snake Face, Kobra Khan, and Ssssqueeze.
Tung Lashor: General! I- um- I, you ssssseee, I was jussssst about to talk to- URK!
General Rattlor grabs the insubordinate Snake Man and slams him to the ground.
General Rattlor: You can save your excuses for King Hiss... that is... IF he decides to let you live.
Tung Lashor: *Gulp*

He-Man 2002 - Favorite Evil Warriors
Man, I regret dearly not making a recording of this one.
I finished the 2002 remake, and it hurts there is no more of it. I want to see the Snakemen nuked out of existence (although King Hiss eating his own head was... not something I was expecting...), hopefully Skeletor and the gang taking a part in that, and I want to see the entire series cast finally kicking Hordak's face in. And I'm talking the whole damn cast, "Everyone is Here Super Smash Brothers Ultimate" style.
But that will never happen, and it hurts.
So to numb the pain, and just unwind after this terrible week at work, I decided to draw my favorite Evil Warriors, in no particular order, because then it would be Mer-Man 5 times and that's not fair. And yes, he is still super adorable. Fight me.
"Hey, Zsu, but where's Evil-Lyn?"
Three meters under solid concrete, I sure damn hope so. I legitimately hate her. Not like, "oh I love to hate her, like with Skeletor", nah nah nah. I just hate her.
At first she was okay, even interesting when it turned out her father was some kind of weird cursed phantom magician guy. That did not go much farther unfortunately, but hey, she was still okay. After Skeletor's betrayal, I was even fine with her selling everyone out to the Snakemen... until those bastards turned Mer-Man into stone and broke him to pieces. I cannot tell you how much legitimate dread I spent the following episode in, thinking they had murked my top favorite character. I took that shit personally, you have no damn idea. Thankfully, Skeletor manages to reverse the stone curse and puts Mer-Man back together (the weight of the goddamn Himalayas fell off of my shoulders at that scene). And after that, after damn near getting eaten by King Hiss instead of being rewarded, Evil-Lyn turns around and goes "Hm, okay, so Snake Satan tried to kill me after I helped him get back on stage. BUUUUUT if I help ACTUAL SATAN come back, whom literally everybody hates, Snakemen included, he will CERTAINLY reward me and I will be his right-hand!" YUP. PERFECT. 10/10 LOGIC RIGHT THERE, WOMAN!
Dear god.
So yeah, to hell with Evil-Lyn.
Am I taking this cartoon for kids far too seriously? Yes. Absolutely. But hey, I made an entire career out of constantly falling for the most obscure background characters, and acting out the "if anything would happen to him, I would kill everyone in this room and then myself" meme with them. Just look at my Megaman fanarts on this site for proof.
So, bottom line. Nobody touches Precious Baby Mer-Man. The Snakeman turning him into stone (Snake Face, was it?) got permanently turned to stone, thank god, and King Hiss ate his own head. Now I only need to blow up Kobra Khan, General Rattlor and Evil-Lyn and we will be good.
I might draw Mer-Man more down the line. Apologies in advance.

According to the original toys' minicomics, King Hiss was the ruler of a race of interstellar conquerors. Although his people were a race of humanoid snakes, Hiss for some unexplained reason had the default appearance of a human, a notional disguise to hide his true form of an upper body comprised several intertwined serpents (although one head is clearly central and dominant, the 2002 MYP animated series depicts all five heads speaking in unison). Hiss and his Snake Men were fighting a protracted war of conquest on the planet Eternia, when they were eventually overcome by the combined magic powers of the planet's Elders.
The Elders' magic flung King Hiss and his army into a limbo-like dimension. Trapped outside of normal time, Hiss and his minions did not age. Centuries in limbo with his serpentine underlings also gave King Hiss the ability to remove his human skin and become a hideous being composed of squirming snakes. After millennia of imprisonment, King Hiss was freed by his right-hand man General Rattlor and a descendant of the original Snake Men, Kobra Khan. Skeletor's base Snake Mountain had formerly been King Hiss's headquarters (and the petrified body of Serpos, the god of the Snake Men) and he, King Hiss, temporarily took Snake Mountain over. The two villains formed an uneasy alliance, so they might conquer Eternia and destroy its champion He-Man.
King Hiss was unable to free his entire army, however some Snake Men rallied to him. They were, Kobra Khan, Tung Lashor, Rattlor, Snake Face, and Sssqueeze (Sometimes called Tanglor).
King Hiss' personality in the 2002 cartoon was best described as tyrannical but somewhat honorable. While indeed power-hungry and ruthless, Kobra Khan described him as being as generous to his friends as he was merciless to his enemies. Unlike Skeletor who regularly abused and humiliated his minion, King Hiss respects his minions as he praised and congratulated them as appropriate. In return, the Snake Men were fiercely loyal to him, ignoring any personal ambitions they might have in order to serve their leader out of sincere devotion.

Okay so I’m confused, I’ve seen a post where Khan tries to bring back king Hiss to bring the snake men back to power, but I thought I also saw one of Cobra Khan warning Skeletor NOT to bring Hiss back
Both are true.
In the 200X cartoon, Kobra Kahn was the sole architect of King Hiss' revival. In "Snake Pit" he sneaks into Snake Mountain to try and open the Void with an ancient talisman he just happens to have in his position. He does succeed in opening the Void for a short time, but King Hiss doesn't make it out. General Rattlor is the only Snakeman who escapes the Void. Later in the "Rise of the Snakemen Part 1" Kobra Khan and Rattlor team up with Evil-Lyn and the three of them working together succeed in reviving King Hiss.
In the Vintage mini-comics that came packaged with the toys in the 80s, Skeletor discovered the pit that King Hiss was sealed in under Snake Mountain. He wants to release the being sealed inside it to use them to defeat He-Man. Kobra Khan warns Skeletor against doing this, but Skeletor does it anyway.

Lady Slither
Lady Slither disappoints me.
Tumblr media
The Snake Men ranks are generally either full no-coward scaly-bait or body horror, and she's not really strong enough in either direction.
Let's look at some movie inspiration for a revamp.
Now, some of these are old movies, so bear with me: there is a lot of racism and ableism in the source material. And others are just R-rated.  Few address female sexuality in a good way.
But we ain't here for plot. We're here for monsters.
Confession: I watched none of these films in full but have seen clips on youtube.
From the horror film: The Reptile (1966) about the were snake daughter of a theologian. Ableism and Racism abound in this one, so beware.
Tumblr media
This I like because it even looks like an old Masters of the Universe Toy design. Could work well as a ceremonial magical mask at the very least. (Magical masks are good pulp sword and sorcery stuff. 80s He-Man addressed the concept twice: an tv episode and a mini-comic Packaged with Battle Armor He-Man, Trap Jaw, and Fisto; both called Masks of Power
And there's something suitably atmospheric about a  mask becoming fully articulated face once put on.
From the exploitative cult classic, Lair of the White Worm (1988)  we have Lady Sylvia Marsh
Tumblr media
(...though uh, warning for anyone checking it out, warning: There is a r*pe scene done by the villainess upon the woman she intends to sacrifice to her god.)
Syliva Marsh combines Fair Folk, vampires and snake influences, and is a total dom the entire time; casually stopping a villainous monologue with clear disappointment and just drowning a paralyzed man when the doorbell rings
With a face changing action feature like Man-E-Faces or Double Trouble, this face could inspire a good toy gimmick.
Before we move on to more modern effects,
Honorable mention is Ray Harryhaussen's stop motion snake woman, who's head bay be a good basis for a redesign
Tumblr media
Good design , but more useful for inspiring for a dancer of King Hiss's court.
I like the hair though, just needs a more regal hat
(Also was anyone else bothered by how the cobra half of her acted like a constrictor when her tail had an existential crisis and choked her human half?)
Moving towards more "sexy scaly" side there is the Snake Woman from HISSS (2010) with her head untransformed
Tumblr media
The full on feral form looks like it would be better suited for another character though. Perhaps a thuggish snakewoman hanging out with Rattlor and the others
Tumblr media
One final thought before I leave:
I think it would be cool if Lady Slither's cape could turn into wings like Meta-Knight from the Kirby series.
