“ i genuinely don’t get how this is an exciting prospect “ CGI has been replacing actors for forty years. It is a tool. Currently, Hollywood has been churning out terrible movies/TV over and over.

Hell, recently Sarah Silverman was shrieking because youtubers aren’t striking. It turns out better entertainment can be made in your basement by a dude with a webcam talking about their hobbies. AI isn’t making better movies than Hollywood script writers. It’s just that it isn’t making worse.

Because the writing has managed to somehow dive below ground level and to keep going.

There’s no bottom floor to the ride. We should have passed the center of the Earth and be poking up the other side. But it is still going down. Why is it still going down?!!!


And the acting. What can I say about the acting.

If it turned out most of the last twenty years was an elaborate joke, it would be fine. Hell, I want to wake up in a hibernation pod and be told the alien parasite eating my brain has been removed, and good movies can once again be made. It’s not like there isn’t talent out there.

It’s just not in the Hollywood machine any more. So Hollywood can happily fire almost every human, leaving a few to look over things and keep them at least mediocre, and you know what, most customers would be happy with that, because most people aren’t really paying attention.

They want to switch their brains off and have pretty colours to look at, while they do other things.

They aren’t thinking. There’s no experience here to form a treasured memory. They are just being distracted. And that’s fine. Because either actors can go to other jobs, or if they really can act, they can go to indie productions, or even do theatre.

When cinema was invented, I am sure it meant the loss of jobs for a lot of actors. But acting on stage remains, century after century. The career of many silent movie stars failed as soon as we had sound. Different talents were required. But there was no stopping that juggernaut. Change is coming.

New jobs will arise.

And unless some talentless hacks are gatekeeping entertainment, then new talents will appear.

So this is happening, this has been happening for centuries before you were born and will keep happening until human extinction, and possibly even after that. You can moan about it, or you can try and steer it in a positive direction. I would say that if you didn’t help those workers who lost their jobs to automation when they were blue collar workers, why do you give a damn when they are overpaid Hollywood hacks?
Will your life end if Amy Schumer doesn’t queef in your face one more time? So how can this be steered to a positive outcome? Well, forget the idea of protecting biometric data. Governments/corporations have been harvesting BILLIONS OF PEOPLE and all of that is then sold on. If they want to make a virtual actor, they don’t need your consent and will not be paying you. If you look at a screen and see your face, you can consult a lawyer, but you may well find that in the small print of the facebook ToS they had that they retained the right to distribute any images you uploaded. It’s going to be hell to try and get that genie back in the bottle now. States would have to start action NOW so that in a decade or so, maybe, the AIs won’t be fed the harvested data from social media and the odds are that it won’t even be needed by then.

All we need is one poorly paid supervisor to look at thousands of images of bot generated faces, pick out the best ones, they are then wrapped onto existing models and puppeted. Actors are not necessary to the streaming services, and it could be argued that Snow White proved that they haven’t been used for years. Hollywood just hired people with dark skin colours, the ‘correct’ sexuality, and so on, ticking off DEI. They didn’t give a shit about acting. Customers still paid for it.
My god, by the time I finish this post, at least five new Star Trek series have been created, all of them with Spock being a pathetic man-baby.
And people pay for them.
Hollywood actors and writers don’t need to be replaced by AI. A cat wandering over a keyboard can do a better job.

Containers are here to stay, who has the right skill set?
Who controls containers: developers, or operations teams? While this might seem like something of an academic discussion, the question has very serious implications for the future of IT in any organization. IT infrastructure is not made up of islands; each component interacts with, and depends on, others. Tying all components of all infrastructures together is the network.
If operations teams control containers, they can carefully review the impact that the creation of those containers will have on all the rest of an organization’s infrastructure. They can carefully plan for the consequences of new workloads, assign and/or reserve resources, map out lifecycle, and plan for the retirement of the workload, including the return of those resources.
If developers control containers, they don’t have the training to see how one small piece fits into the wider puzzle, and almost certainly don’t have the administrative access to all the other pieces of the puzzle to gain that insight. Given the above, it might seem like a no-brainer to let operations teams control containers, yet in most organizations deploying containers, developers are responsible for the creation and destruction of containers, which they do as they see fit.
This is not as irrational as it might at first appear. Systems administrators are trained predominantly to minimize risk. Developers are trained to be creative, and try new things. Containers don’t have the resiliency of infrastructure options like virtual machines (VMs), so the applications that live in them are designed to be more tolerant of infrastructure failure. In other words, it’s (usually) OK to take more risks with containerized applications, making them ideal for developers.
VMs and bare metal servers are better managed by operations teams, and are best suited for applications which aren’t designed to cope with fallible infrastructure. Containers shouldn’t be treated like VMs: not in how they’re managed, nor in which workloads reside inside them.
Container Strengths
Perhaps the biggest advantage of containers is that they can live anywhere. Containers can live inside a VM, in the public cloud, or on bare metal servers. They can have dedicated infrastructure designed for their strengths and weaknesses, or they can hitch a ride on whatever’s available.
Containers are largely created and destroyed via automation. This can be through scripts, or using automation/orchestration solutions such as Kubernetes. Kubernetes, which is not only automation and orchestration for containers, but has evolved to become a complete container lifecycle management solution, works on any infrastructure, and has more or less won the war for container management.
The ability to run a container anywhere, and do so with minimal overhead, makes containers especially useful to developers. Developers can prototype applications on their own notebooks, or on an on-premises server, then deploy a copy of the working code into production with unparalleled ease.
The composable design of containerized applications makes running canary groups for application updates easier, and makes staging phased rollouts to production a straightforward matter of scripting and/or orchestration. These capabilities are already largely baked into Kubernetes.
That Network Thing
The challenge with containers is that, fundamentally, they’re not that much different from any other way to run a workload. Like virtual machines and bare metal servers, containers rely on networking to allow workloads to talk to the rest of the world. Workloads which don’t talk to the rest of the world have rather limited usefulness.
The ability to get deep network visibility into containers is vital. Network visibility allows operations teams to ensure workloads are operating as expected, and also meeting performance requirements. Network visibility is also a big part of how security teams ensure that unauthorized access or other security compromise events are occurring.
Unfortunately, network visibility into containers is something of a challenge. To start with, the low overhead of containers means that many more of them can be packed onto a server than is generally possible with VMs. The ability of containers to run under multiple environments – inside VMs, in the public cloud, or on bare metal – also makes keeping an eye on them tricky. The number of layers between workload and the network monitoring products is variable.
To top it all off, containers move. Because Kubernetes can work anywhere, containers in the real world tend to work everywhere. Containers are also leading to the sharding of applications: large monolithic applications are being broken down into microservices, and those microservices might be scattered about multiple infrastructures. A database that lives on-premises might feed web servers on multiple public cloud providers, all living behind load balancers provided by third party service providers, just as a simple example.
Obtaining and maintaining useful network visibility requires being able to peer into traffic that transits physical networks, virtual networks, service provider networks, and public cloud provider networks. These networks need to be able to reconfigure themselves dynamically to adapt to the perpetually moving and changing containers, and they need to be able to ensure that all containers which work together to form a single service can communicate, all while ensuring that nothing that shouldn’t be communicating with those containers managed to communicate with them.
When operations teams had complete control of infrastructure, provisioning workloads and IT infrastructure resources was slow and bureaucratic because keeping track of all of these details isn’t easy. Now that containers have empowered developers, network automation has moved from a nice-to-have to a must-have.
There is no going back. The genie doesn’t go back into the bottle. Containers are here to stay, and the reality of the world is that developers own them. Developers are hired to experiment, and to try new things, and that is exactly what they are going to continue to do. Keeping up will require software-defined networking (SDN).

Beyond CryptoKitties: 10 Trends That Defined the Year in Crypto Gaming

The following is an exclusive contribution to CoinDesk’s 2018 Year in Review.
While the digital asset market has been volatile this year, a new set of digital assets emerged: non-fungible tokens.
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are digital sound goods that are unique and openly programmable by nature. Here’s a list of the top headlines and stories affecting non-fungible tokens this year, followed by a list of predictions for 2019.
New standards — Non-fungible tokens came with a whole bundle of ways to construct game assets. Standards must be enforced and adopted to ensure tokens can talk to one another. Non-fungible tokens on Ethereum were birthed with the ERC-721 standard, but evolved quickly over the past year. Standards like Enjin’s ERC-1155 and ERC-998 allowed tokens to own other tokens and save on gas costs.
Non-Fungible Token Marketplaces — New non-fungible tokens started to appear after CryptoKitties launched. OpenSea and RareBits came onto the scene in the first quarter of the year allowing users to sell their game assets directly outside of the game’s environment. New tools started to arise like FanBits so users can make their own unique digital assets. These user-generated platforms have failed to attract buyers because of the value uncertainty, similar to many ICOs.
Digital Art Market — The user-generated market was most popular with artist platforms. New platforms such as Rare Art Labs, SuperRare and dada.NYC emerged that ascribed true digital scarcity and authenticity to the art market. With programmable contracts, artists can earn fees on secondary-market sales and even split it between multiple parties, unlike traditional physical art.
Record-setting sales — Despite the fluctuating market volatility, some NFTs sold for extraordinarily high prices. This includes the Gods Unchained card that sold for $60,000, the CryptoKitty that sold for $170,000 and virtual real estate in Decentraland selling up to $200,000.
Second-Layer Experiences — One of the biggest selling points of NFTs is the permissionless programmability component; being able to build on top of others’ platforms. CryptoKitties created and promoted the KittyVerse to promote third-party developers to create these experiences. This brought about KittyRace, KittyHats and more but they failed to gain any significant traction.
Intellectual Property – In March, CryptoKitties announced the launch of “celebrity kitties” with Curry Kitty (Steph Curry) as the first in the lineup. After some confusion and miscommunication, Axiom Zen, the creator of CryptoKitties, was threatened with a lawsuit over breach of NDA. Axiom Zen hoped to clear up the third-party open programmability component and preserve value capture of NFTs with the launch the NIFTY license. This caused some uproar in the community and eventually led the team to explore other methods of value capture.
What’s next for CryptoKitties? – Just recently the team behind CryptoKitties raised an additional $15 million. Dapper Labs (the new entity behind CryptoKitties) will now be building out new blockchain game experiences and tools with their new funding. Some of the investors on the list include Samsung Next, aXiomatic Gaming, and William Morris Endeavor, a talent agency.While the team hasn’t released exact details on their plan, given the list of investors we could expect partnerships with major brands. Niantic Labs, the studio behind Pokémon Go also announced a $200 million Series C, also had aXiomatic Gaming and Samsung as part of the raise, similar to Dapper Labs’ raise. This might be foreshadowing something much larger to come.
Better user experiences tools – The most pressing problem of dapps and non-fungible tokens was the need to use MetaMask and have ethereum on-hand to complete transactions. Others took notice, like Bitski, creating a lockbox for users’ digital goods without them needing to manage their private key. Coinbase Wallet, Vault, Opera and Trust Wallet (owned by Binance) also released dApp browsers to play blockchain games from a phone.
Developers flock to scalability – As users suffered from a lack of Ethereum scalability, EOS and WAX were able to take developer share. Mythical Games announced a $16 million raise to build blockchain games on EOS and their first title, Blankos. Meanwhile, some blockchain game studios are banking on Plasma like Loom Network and Blockade Games. Blockade Games announced $13 million in funding to build out their flagship title Neon District on top of Loom’s plasma implementation.
Title to watch: Gods Unchained – Coinbase-backed blockchain game Gods Unchained came out of the woodwork this year from game studio Fuel Games. The studio dipped its toes in the water with a game called EtherBots in the beginning of the year, but quickly realized the limitations of on-chain gameplay without scalability.Gods Unchained is a trading-card game utilizing NFTs but with off-chain gameplay. Users can still truly own their digital goods while not having to worry about “nerfing” or “buffing” cards in the game. Every time a player purchases a pack, some funds are sent to the tournament prize pool. The prize pool is already greater than $300,000 for the yet-to-be-release game.
2019 Predictions
Stablecoins will hide the blockchain – Next year is shaping up to be a battle between centralized and decentralized players. It’s going to be more than likely that stablecoins like the CENTRE Foundation’s USD-C and MakerDAO’s Dai become fundamental to the Ethereum blockchain gaming ecosystem.As users start to earn in platforms, users will cash out in stablecoins. All digital goods will be priced in US dollars instead of ETH or other currencies for easier conversion.
Intersection of Play and Work – Consumer mining and staking services will blur the lines between play and labor. Users will know how much they can earn within a specific time frame. As liquidity starts to build in blockchain games, users will exactly know how much they can earn for playing a game for a specific amount of time.
Celebrities and digital merchandise – The consumer tech space has seen an influx of avatar apps this year. Snapchat doubled down on Bitmoji, Genies raises $10 million, and Zepeto reached the top of the app store. Celebrities and sports players will issue their own digital merchandise to fans which will grant VIP access and feature discounts.
It may be a while before digital merchandise lives on a blockchain — but it shouldn’t be long from now.

One more the more ingenious accomplishments by the globalist hegemony is convincing a huge swathe of the population that by aligning themselves with these ruthlessly exploitative corporations that one is “#Resisting” the Establishment. Amazon, for example, has a larger net worth than all but sixteen countries on earth. We are fast approaching a time—if we are not already there—where the corporatocracy is more powerful than the nation-state.

Certainly, global finance is already there (what, you thought the Federal Reserve was actually controlled by the federal government?), with the IMF strong-arming countries like Greece and Ukraine into adopting its policy “recommendations.” Liberals used to be vehemently opposed to globalism (remember “Buy Local”?) and would bemoan the fact that the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, and the IMF have basically ravaged the entire Third World. No longer. It is now far more vital to drink Pepsi to “own the Nazis” than to realize that independently-minded leaders who reject the machinations of global finance must be removed and replaced with ones much more amenable to the IMF, WTO, and World Bank dictating policy in order to effectively control their nation’s economy.
It is simply impossible to separate modern geopolitics from global finance. Take a wild guess who the Balfour Declaration of 1917 promising Palestine to the Jews was addressed to? That would be Edmond de Rothschild, financier of the first Russian-Jewish colonists of the region! All roads lead not to Rome, but Jerusalem. The forever wars in the Middle East can be easily explained first by considering the efficacy of the Yinon Plan and advancing Israeli national interests in the region through its Balkanization, and secondly by understanding that the multi-nationals are profiting immensely. “Iraqi freedom” was a financial windfall for the war profiteers of Halliburton. Afghanistan supplies the raw materials for the opiates pacifying Western populations’ resistance to their displacement and ultimately their replacement. The Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in Syria has proven to have plenty of Black gold for Genie Energy to extract. Where is the supposedly bleeding-heart Left in all of this? The lobotomized wasteland of the terminally contradictory Manichean-yet-relativistic Left of today stands not on principle, or ideals, or really anything for that matter other than consumption. To quote Mike Enoch:
All the Left talks about is Harry Potter, White Privilege, and pan-sexuality. There’s no more talk about anti-war. There’s no more talk about the economic draft. There’s no more talking about working-class issues, no more talk about wage suppression. They are completely degenerate. They are lacking in any intellectual foundation or principled politics. They’re lacking in any positions of any worth…It’s really pathetic.
Even worse, find a “progressive” cause, and there is a mega-corporation behind it. These corporations are so progressive, in fact, that billions of dollars are spent on their employees—from the public trough. That’s right, companies like Wal-Mart and Amazon pay their employees so little that a large percentage have to turn to public assistance to survive. In states like Arizona, one-third of Amazon employees rely on food stamps. Walmart’s abysmally low wages force workers to turn to public assistance to the tune of an estimated $6.2 billion in public assistance including food stamps, Medicaid, and subsidized housing. The American fast food industry represented a $7 billion drain in costs to taxpayers. And these rainbow-colored virtue-signalers are of course unanimous in their support for “progressive” policies—all while leaving the average American and the fast-shrinking middle class holding the bag.
The global “free market” subsists on child labor and wage slavery, another state of affairs liberals of yore were once committed to combating. Now Nike with its sweatshop-made products has made Colin Kaepernick the face of its new advertising campaign. “Standing for something,” even if it means kneeling, might cost you everything—or it might just cost you next to nothing in labor expenses if you’re Nike. A more perfect match of vapidity and unprincipled charlatanry you may not find—unless it is those social media “YASSSS QUEEN BEY” feminists who find multi-millionaire and cuckoldress Beyonce to be the epitome of female empowerment. Beyonce, it should be mentioned, pays 64 cents an hour to the female sweatshop workers in Sri Lanka who make her Ivy Park clothing line.
When the Women’s March claims to be pro-mass immigration and pro-labor, this gross contradiction, once again, is never “called out.” As Jim Goad put it in The Redneck Manifesto;
“In the…case of the sniffles that afflicts American society, anyone who questions our spread-eagle immigration policy is automatically tagged as a racist.”
Even though mass unskilled and low-skill immigration depresses wages and leaves the bottom 50% of the economy—American-born Blacks and Hispanics and working-class Whites alike—vulnerable to competition and especially under-the-table, tax-free payments to illegal aliens who under-cut legal wage-earners. Besides, with increasing automation, we need more people why exactly? As the third-most populous nation on earth, if the United States can’t fill its labor needs domestically, what are the odds importing Senegal, Somalia, and Honduras is going to fix that? As more workers are displaced, as those who are employed are not even paid a living wage, as an increasingly cognitively-intensive economy renders a growing portion of the population unemployable, what kind of future are we creating for ourselves? Do we even have one at this rate? And what of a morbidly obese population straining the resources of our beleaguered healthcare system past the breaking point? Does Adult Onset Diabetes Woke Pepsi-Cola have anything to say on the matter?
They do say that we should be “proud” of non-heteronormative sexualities/proclivities but not of our ancestors’ accomplishments. Smash the White male patriarchy but uncritically support an infinitely more repressive and regressive Islamic one. Be pro-globalist kleptocracy and function as the shock troops for the Establishment. Hasten your own civilization’s demise. Fetishize brown folks. On and on and circle the drain ever-downward.
The thing is, it is not just the relentless virtue-signaling of basically every major corporation that is at issue here; if homosexuality sells more Pepsi, then such a marketing tactic is obviously smart and profitable. The issue is the collusion both between the multinationals and the various tentacles of governmental bureaucracy and between the multi-nationals themselves in order to obliterate the age-old homelands of the Saxon and the Anglo-Saxon and the Egyptian Coptic Christian and the Syriac Christian. For those keeping score at home, despite the fact that Israel is almost entirely a “nation of immigrants,” and was illegitimately established in 1948, the Jews “have a right to a homeland,” but Britain, home to an uninterrupted genealogical line stretching back 12,000 years (and of which modern Britons owe approximately 80% of their genetic inheritance) and with a population still largely distributed along the same Anglo-Saxon kingdoms’ lines has always been multicultural. Egyptian and Syrian Muslims have carte blanche to rape and massacre the Christians in their own countries—and in ours. It is literal Nazism to support ICE, despite the fact that they work diligently to combat the now-$32 billion annual human trafficking business. Human trafficking in California is up 842% in the last decade. The cynic in me notes acidly the slave auctions in Libya, the slaughter of Christians in Syria, Egypt, and Nigeria, the White genocide in Rhodesia and South Africa, and eyes Progressivism, Inc. for its profit-margin-above-all ethos. To quote Peter Hitchens:
Globalization is all about wealth. It knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. Without borders the world will become—is visibly becoming—a howling desert of traffic fumes, plastic, and concrete, where nowhere is home and the only language is money.
I would gladly forgo being able to purchase strawberries in December or pay an extra dollar for produce due to higher domestic wages than sign my country away, but the incessant propaganda of the foreskin-less globalists over at Rothschild rag The Economist and elsewhere would beg to differ—unless it pertains to a little New Jersey-sized apartheid state in the Middle East. Israel is so not racist that, as Steve Sailer informs:
Between 1984 and 1991, Israel achieved a public-relations coup by importing tens of thousands of Ethiopians who claimed to be Jews. We are all sharecroppers now; how many of us actually own homes and property outright, and how many are trapped in thirty-five-year mortgages or simply pay rent every month? How many commute an hour-plus to escape the blast radius of all of that diverse cultural enrichment? Do you know why the levees in New Orleans broke during Hurricane Katrina? Not because of some nefarious White plot, but because New Orleans became a chocolate city and the Blacks simply stopped maintaining them. It is as simple as that. En masse they simply cannot be trusted to be stewards of our—or any—civilization. Left to their own devices, they do not create Wakanda, they create Haiti. Nevertheless, the toxic combination of excess self-esteem and constant anti-White provocations convinces Blacks and Browns they should be afforded privileges well beyond what they deserve, and Social Justice eagerly provides the Kool-Aid. Surely global disparities are the product of some nefarious collusion by Whites to clandestinely oppress the global coloreds they’re presently concerned with giving their country away to, right?
The unthinking mob, which flits from Two Minute Hate to Two Minute Hate, is forever at the mercy of mass media and the state-controlled carrot-and-stick. It is almost in foment and is incapable of forming a frame of reference outside the Idiot Box, and the message is relentlessly anti-White and anti-Western. Demographic warfare is just one tool of the globalist social revolutionists. As Lothrop Stoddard wrote in The Revolt Against Civilization:
A fundamental quality of destructive criticism is its glorification of the primitive. Long before it elaborates specific revolutionary doctrines and methods, it blends with its condemnation of the present an idealization of what it conceives to have been the past.
Rousseau was especially guilty of this in his idealization of the Noble Savage. We can see in this glorification of the primitive the Luddite impulse animating the cult of “climate change,” though only for the West as rapid industrialization and environmental degradation in China and India passes without comment. China is busy colonizing the entire planet and we are hung up on kneecapping our economies for the sake of one-tenth of a degree Centigrade. Trust me, given China’s record on not just the environment but human rights as well, this is not a positive development. But sure, let’s keep focusing on the Russian red herring.
I love the way Mark Steyn excoriates the bizarre and megalomaniacal delusions of the Left—“We can’t enforce the border, but we can turn down the global thermostat!” Blissfully unaware that glacier growth and snowfall are rising in Antarctica, that the Mini Ice Age from 1350-1850 resulted in the high point of glaciation, roughly coinciding with the advent of photography, and that climate change has defined Planet Earth for the entirety of its existence. Glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere are in fact receding, but it is a natural process that is unclear how much of which is caused by increased carbon emissions. My guess is not much, but this is of course speculative. What is not is that Barack Obama’s misguided attempts to curtail carbon emissions cost this country 125,000 jobs and $1.5 trillion dollars; Justin Trudeau’s pursuit of similar policies and suffocating regulation is crippling the Canadian economy. Conservation is very clearly a Eurowestern value. A quick glance at the rest of the globe confirms this, but modern liberals go ballistic over carbon footprints and get wet for cost-ineffective “green energies” while simultaneously ignoring the sheer volume of pollution and the abominable damage done to the environment courtesy of non-Western countries. For example:

The nations with the highest levels of air pollution are: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Cameroon, United Arab Emirates, Nepal, India, and Libya.
The nations with the lowest levels of air pollution are: New Zealand, Brunei, Sweden, Australia, Canada, Finland, the United States, Iceland, Estonia, and Spain.
The top five nations with the highest carbon dioxide emissions per capita are: Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The nations with the most deaths from air pollution are: Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Egypt, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, India, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.
The nations with the fewest deaths from air pollution are: Sweden, Australia, Brunei, New Zealand, Finland, Cameroon, Iceland, Norway, the United States, and Spain.

Can a ‘Family of Bots' Reshape College Teaching?
Can college students tell the difference between a human teaching assistant and a chatbot? A Georgia Tech computer scientist has been pursuing that question for several years. And the answer has profound implications for the future of college teaching.
Ashok K. Goel, a professor of computer science and cognitive science, and his team have refined perhaps the first robot teaching assistant, dubbed Jill Watson. Here’s the scenario: Last year in an online course on artificial intelligence with 400 students, two chatbots joined 13 human TAs to answer student questions about the course and its content. Students were told that software robots were in the mix, and they were challenged to identify which of the voices they were interacting with were human and which were machine.
The robot TAs were given the names Stacy Sisko and Ian Braun. One bot was designed to be a bit more personable than the other: if a student mentioned she was from Chicago, Stacy Sisko would make a comment about the city. Ian Braun was all business, and weighed in on fewer student questions (he was an older version of the software that the researchers keep refining).
At the end of the semester about half of the students correctly guessed that Stacy was merely computer code. Only ten percent correctly identified Ian as a bot. And ten percent mistakenly thought that two of the human TAs were chatbots.
This semester, students did better at unmasking the bots, but not because they sounded more robotic, says Goel. “The performance has reached the level where she is performing so well that students say ‘This one must be a bot,’” he says. For instance, students can look in the online forum and see that the chatbot quickly responded to dozens of students, while the human TAs have only had time to type out replies to a few in the same amount of time.
Goel stresses that he has not cut back on human TAs since bringing in the Jill Watson software—he hires the same amount for the same number of hours per week. But he says what those humans spend their time doing has changed.
“The human TAs were just answering the more mundane questions again and again and again,” Goel says. “By automating some of the very mundane things, we’re freeing up time,” he says, to do things like give more-detailed answers to other student questions. “There are so many things to do as a teacher that students can take as much of your time as you have,” he argues.
Georgia Tech is not alone in developing teaching bots. IBM Watson Education is building its own chatbot that it has added to some commercial textbooks as part of a pilot project. (The Watson AI system, you may recall, famously beat a Jeopardy champion on the trivia game show a few years back). And Deakin University, in Australia, is developing a comprehensive student assistant it calls Deakin Genie that it hopes will help in the classroom, as well as with more administrative aspects of campus life. There are also a handful of startups creating AI chatbots to help with everyday questions students might have on about, say, financial aid deadlines.
Outside of higher education, the era of assistive bots has arrived (just ask Siri on your iPhone or Alexa in your kitchen). But there has been resistance by many in higher education to bringing them onto campus because they are associated with being too automated and too impersonal, says Brian Fleming, executive director of an innovation center at Southern New Hampshire University called the Sandbox ColLABorative.
“There’s a right degree of skepticism,” he notes. “The question for adoptions in higher ed is, ‘What is the problem bots solve?’” That will differ for different institutions, he adds, praising Deakin Genie and experiments with bots for things like admissions, enrollment and advising.
But he doubts that experiments like Jill Watson will work outside of a few computer-science classes (where, after all, the students are learning to build bots themselves). “We have still never seen conclusive evidence that anyone wants to be taught by a bot,” says Fleming. “Teaching and learning will remain a human endeavor.”
Goel, however, sees a future where chatbots are part of the teaching mix in a range of disciplines (though he agrees that humans will always take the lead). He plans to test his software in a biology course soon, and believes it could work for poetry as well. His plan is to publish scripts for his chatbots that others could use or adapt to build their own versions of Jill Watson. “My sense is that we are at least two or three years away from even the first script,” he says.
So what part of the teaching role can a chatbot never do? Goel recognizes that his work raises the question. “If in 10 years every student has such an assistant and every teacher has such an assistant, than the roles of the teacher fundamentally changes, I would think.”
His latest idea is to create what he calls a “family of bots,” each with a specialization. One might be designed to explain the syllabus, another to answer course content, and another to welcome students (and perhaps other micro-roles). And this semester the researchers are trying out new names from different ethnicities to see if that impacts how students interact and view the virtual TAs.
Even if such chatbots never make it past the research phase, they seem certain to teach humans something about what it means to teach.

Containers are here to stay, who has the right skill set?
Who controls containers: developers, or operations teams? While this might seem like something of an academic discussion, the question has very serious implications for the future of IT in any organization. IT infrastructure is not made up of islands; each component interacts with, and depends on, others. Tying all components of all infrastructures together is the network.
If operations teams control containers, they can carefully review the impact that the creation of those containers will have on all the rest of an organization’s infrastructure. They can carefully plan for the consequences of new workloads, assign and/or reserve resources, map out lifecycle, and plan for the retirement of the workload, including the return of those resources.
If developers control containers, they don’t have the training to see how one small piece fits into the wider puzzle, and almost certainly don’t have the administrative access to all the other pieces of the puzzle to gain that insight. Given the above, it might seem like a no-brainer to let operations teams control containers, yet in most organizations deploying containers, developers are responsible for the creation and destruction of containers, which they do as they see fit.
This is not as irrational as it might at first appear. Systems administrators are trained predominantly to minimize risk. Developers are trained to be creative, and try new things. Containers don’t have the resiliency of infrastructure options like virtual machines (VMs), so the applications that live in them are designed to be more tolerant of infrastructure failure. In other words, it’s (usually) OK to take more risks with containerized applications, making them ideal for developers.
VMs and bare metal servers are better managed by operations teams, and are best suited for applications which aren’t designed to cope with fallible infrastructure. Containers shouldn’t be treated like VMs: not in how they’re managed, nor in which workloads reside inside them.
Container Strengths
Perhaps the biggest advantage of containers is that they can live anywhere. Containers can live inside a VM, in the public cloud, or on bare metal servers. They can have dedicated infrastructure designed for their strengths and weaknesses, or they can hitch a ride on whatever’s available.
Containers are largely created and destroyed via automation. This can be through scripts, or using automation/orchestration solutions such as Kubernetes. Kubernetes, which is not only automation and orchestration for containers, but has evolved to become a complete container lifecycle management solution, works on any infrastructure, and has more or less won the war for container management.
The ability to run a container anywhere, and do so with minimal overhead, makes containers especially useful to developers. Developers can prototype applications on their own notebooks, or on an on-premises server, then deploy a copy of the working code into production with unparalleled ease.
The composable design of containerized applications makes running canary groups for application updates easier, and makes staging phased rollouts to production a straightforward matter of scripting and/or orchestration. These capabilities are already largely baked into Kubernetes.
That Network Thing
The challenge with containers is that, fundamentally, they’re not that much different from any other way to run a workload. Like virtual machines and bare metal servers, containers rely on networking to allow workloads to talk to the rest of the world. Workloads which don’t talk to the rest of the world have rather limited usefulness.
The ability to get deep network visibility into containers is vital. Network visibility allows operations teams to ensure workloads are operating as expected, and also meeting performance requirements. Network visibility is also a big part of how security teams ensure that unauthorized access or other security compromise events are occurring.
Unfortunately, network visibility into containers is something of a challenge. To start with, the low overhead of containers means that many more of them can be packed onto a server than is generally possible with VMs. The ability of containers to run under multiple environments – inside VMs, in the public cloud, or on bare metal – also makes keeping an eye on them tricky. The number of layers between workload and the network monitoring products is variable.
To top it all off, containers move. Because Kubernetes can work anywhere, containers in the real world tend to work everywhere. Containers are also leading to the sharding of applications: large monolithic applications are being broken down into microservices, and those microservices might be scattered about multiple infrastructures. A database that lives on-premises might feed web servers on multiple public cloud providers, all living behind load balancers provided by third party service providers, just as a simple example.
Obtaining and maintaining useful network visibility requires being able to peer into traffic that transits physical networks, virtual networks, service provider networks, and public cloud provider networks. These networks need to be able to reconfigure themselves dynamically to adapt to the perpetually moving and changing containers, and they need to be able to ensure that all containers which work together to form a single service can communicate, all while ensuring that nothing that shouldn’t be communicating with those containers managed to communicate with them.
When operations teams had complete control of infrastructure, provisioning workloads and IT infrastructure resources was slow and bureaucratic because keeping track of all of these details isn’t easy. Now that containers have empowered developers, network automation has moved from a nice-to-have to a must-have.
There is no going back. The genie doesn’t go back into the bottle. Containers are here to stay, and the reality of the world is that developers own them. Developers are hired to experiment, and to try new things, and that is exactly what they are going to continue to do. Keeping up will require software-defined networking (SDN).
