‘Extremely Rare’ Ancient Stone Seal Discovered in Jerusalem

An "extremely rare and unusual" ancient stone artifact-thought to be around 2,700 years old-has been discovered in Jerusalem.

The artifact in question, a seal made of black stone, was uncovered during an excavation conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority and the City of David organization near the Southern Wall of the Temple Mount (also known as Al-Aqsa)-a site in Jerusalem's Old City that is considered holy by Jewish people, Muslims and Christians.

The stone seal bears a name inscribed in the paleo-Hebrew script, as well as an image of a winged figure. It is thought to have been used both as an amulet and as a stamp to seal documents, Filip Vukosavović, a senior field archaeologist with the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), told Newsweek.

"The seal is one of the most beautiful ever discovered in excavations in ancient Jerusalem, and is executed at the highest artistic level," Yuval Baruch and Navot Rom, excavation directors on behalf of the IAA, said in a press release.

The seal has a hole drilled through it lengthwise so that it could be strung onto a chain and hung around the neck. In the center, a figure with wings is depicted in profile, wearing a long, striped shirt and striding toward the right. The figure has a mane of long curls covering the nape of the neck, and on its head sits a hat or a crown.

The figure is raising one arm upward with an open palm, perhaps indicating that it is holding some kind of object.

Depictions of winged figures such as these are known in neo-Assyrian art of the 9th-7th centuries B.C. and were considered a kind of protective magical figure, according to Vukosavović. The artifact, thus, demonstrates the influence of the Assyrian Empire-a major civilization of the ancient Near East that had conquered the Israelite Kingdom of Judah, including its capital Jerusalem.

"This is an extremely rare and unusual discovery. This is the first time that a winged 'genie'– a protective magical figure-has been found in Israeli and regional archaeology," Vukosavović said in an IAA press release.

On both sides of the figure, an inscription is engraved in paleo-Hebrew script. In English script, this inscription translates as: "Le Yehoʼezer ben Hoshʼayahu."

"[Yehoʼezer] was a common name," Ronny Reich, a researcher from the University of Haifa said.

The researchers believe that the stone object was originally worn as an amulet around the neck of a man called Hoshʼayahu, who held a senior position in the administration of the Kingdom of Judah. He may have worn the object as a symbol of his authority. "It seems that the object was made by a local craftsman-a Judahite, who produced the amulet at the owner's request. It was prepared at a very high artistic level," Vukosavović said in the press release.

The working hypothesis of the experts is that upon Hoshʼayahu's death, his son, Yehoʼezer, inherited the seal, and then added both of their names on either side of the figure. The names were added in negative, or mirror, script-so that the impression would appear in positive and be legible-according to Reich.

"The combination of figure and script, and particularly a neo-Assyrian figure is uncommon in Judah," Reich said.

Tales of the Rays: Advent of Yggdrasil (English Translation)

This is my attempt at translating one of the Tales of the Rays events so that more people can enjoy it. Though, I do have to admit that I do not speak Japanese and relied on multiple machine translations to do this.

SCENE 1

Martel: Hmm, I'm in trouble...

    [ Luke and Tear enter ]

Luke: Hmm? Isn't that Mithos and Martel? What are you guys doing?

Martel: Oh. Luke and Tear. Hello. Hehe, it’s nice to see you two coming here together.

Tear: Wh-what? Martel, you’ve misunderstood...

Luke: Y-yeah! We both got hungry at the same time by chance! Besides, didn’t the two of you come to eat, too?

Martel: No... I was just talking to Mithos about Yuan.

Luke: Yuan? Is something going on with him?

Martel: No, nothing’s happened with Yuan himself. Yuan and I were talking about going out somewhere together.

Martel: But, when I asked everyone at the hideout for recommendations, I ended up with a lot of suggestions. I couldn't narrow it down to just one because they all sounded beautiful.

Why is the FBI protecting Superman's civilian identity?

In last week's Superman #18, the eponymous hero held a press conference to reveal his identity to the public. Comic book continuity is ever-shifting, of course, and the connection between Superman and Clark Kent has been known or exposed by other people before, just as the genie will someday be placed back in the bottle once again. In this particular context, Superman was inspired to come clean after learning about the lies and deceptions of his birth father, Jor-El (who also used to be dead, but now is not, because comics). This revelation also comes on the heels of an epic crossover that shattered the acronym-happy intelligence community of the DC Universe with some other truths and justices.

This curiously came on the heels of the Inspector General's report on the origins of the FBI investigation into the connections between the Trump campaign and Russia. The results of this investigation were as much of a political Rorschach test as anything is these days. But one thing it did reinforce was the FBI's overconfidence in its own self-righteous status quo enforcement, for better and for worse.

While there was (unsurprisingly, IMHO) no political bias found in the FBI's motives, the IG report did note a handful of oversights and omissions that had been along the way—a detail that the President's stalwart defenders have eagerly jumped on. For anyone who's ever paid attention to anything the FBI has ever done, however, this all came across as the same standard over-zealous stuff the organization's also done—again, for better, and for worse.

Case in point? Superman.

In the fall of 2016, the public records journalism organization MuckRock put in a FOIA request to the FBI for information pertaining to the Church of Scientology. 2. BTS – ‘Butter’

BTS finished in second place, making them the only male K-pop group to enter the top five. His song, “Makkhan” got 14 votes from influential people.

“Butter” was released on May 21, 2021, and is their second English-language single. The aforementioned BTS song debuted at the top of the Billboard 100 chart, making it BTS’s fourth number-one hit in the United States. It is currently the longest-running number-one debut in Hot 100 history.

1. SSAK3 – ‘Beach Again’

Ranking at the top and earning the title of “Best K-Pop Summer Song” is SSAK 3’s “Beach Again”, which received 32 votes from influencers.

SSAK3, a seasonal project group consisting of Yoo Jae Suk (U-Dragon), Lee Hyori (Linda G.), and Ren (B. Ryong), debuted with “Beach Again” on July 25, 2020. Upon release, “Beach Again” topped various South Korean real-time music charts. In addition, the song topped the Goan digital charts for five consecutive weeks.

What? Utah Congressman John Curtis has just said Republicans really do care about climate change. Subversive and traitorous talk like that could get him hanged in West Virginia or Wyoming because Real President Trump said it's all a big a hoax. So what's up with Curtis, who just launched the Conservative Climate Caucus. “Republicans do care about this Earth... We, too, want to leave this Earth better than we found it,” he said. But there is, of course, a catch: Caucus members will press for private-sector solutions and labeled as sacrilege cutting back on fossil fuels. Why kill the economy just to save the planet? The caucus already has round-filed President Biden's goal to cut emission levels in half by 2030, because it's just un-American. Republicans, Curtis said, “will show the need to depart from the shaming-culture found in today’s climate dialogue... ” Yeah, no more coal-shaming and no more tie-die Earth Day B.S. Still, it is PROGRESS because until now any Republican uttering the words, “climate change,” would have their image photo-shopped onto Nancy Pelosi Christmas cards and mailed to constituents with the caption, “Climate change is real and Earth is not flat.” God rest their souls.

And now New York has suspended Rudy's law license because, they say, and we quote: “He lied his ass off about Trump winning the election.” Anybody can see what is happening here — the Deep State is taking over the government and stealing our freedom to lie our ass off. And that's not all, as Ingraham explained it: the military is trying to root out conservative Evangelicals in its ranks. This is nothing short of a grand scheme called “critical race theory” to get rid of all caucasians. White People Matter and they're tired of being trampled on by minorities — it's not fair. White people want their freedom back.

Post script — Well, pickleball fans, that about does it for another rousing week here at Smart Bomb where we keep track of overgrown frat boy Tucker Carlson's drivel so you don't have to. (e.g. Gen. Fortunately, The Donald still has his day job as Real President in Exile, which does provide a tidy income as long as all the “Trump Won” crazies keep donating. Meantime Jared and Ivanka are on a slow boat to China or hiding in Monaco — totally under the radar. Even they think that daddy is bonkers and don't want to catch that virus. Hey, wasn't your dad the guy who kept saying he was president? Too late to put that genie back in the bottle. Yep, he's going down in history as the Walter Mitty of Mar-A-Lago. Still, who knows, if Republican legislatures across the land can screw with voting restrictions enough, maybe he could steal Bill Clinton's moniker as The Comeback Kid.

Don't worry Wilson, that probably won't happen. Anyway, we've got other pressing things to worry about, like hot hot heat. Do you and the guys in the band have a chilling number for that:

Oresuki – 05 – Not Working Out

We saw Asunaro’s smirk last week as she looked over an inflammatory article about Joro’s alleged three-timing, so when she invited him up on the roof, I feared the worst for him, even as he thought Asunaro was poised to confess. It isn’t until he sees that damnable bench that he knows nothing good will come of their imminent conversation.

Sure enough, Asunaro isn’t there to confess, but to warn him about the article she’s about to publish documenting his Don-Juanery, with photos of him very close to Cosmos, Himawari and Pansy to prove it. However, Asunaro believes in publishing the truth, and so agrees to shadow Joro and give him a chance to clear his name.

Sure enough, his next interaction with Cosmos does nothing to assuage Asunaro’s suspicions. He asks the three girls if they can just keep their distance for a bit, and all refuse. On the contrary, he’s doomed to stick close to them until the festival, as he’s been chosen as the boy in the Flower Dance, while Cosmos and Himawari are two of the three girls with whom he’ll dance.

When Cosmos asks if he’ll accompany her to meet the first-year who will be the third to dance with him, he asks if she’ll treat him more strictly around Asunaro, but she ends up pulls out a completely over-the-top full samurai lord act. As for the first year, the nasty rumors about Joro are still floating around her grade, and he’s known as the “Slipper Man” for licking girls’ hallway shoes. So yeah…she’s out of the Flower Dance.

Cosmos picks Sun to replace her (still not sure why Sun is even in the picture anymore after his horrendous threat to Pansy), and gets permission from the adults, which means the whole study group (plus Pansy) end up spending more time together, both practicing and buying outfits for the dance. The more she shadows him during these events, the less Asunaro is convinced of the accuracy of her article—which, it should be said, begs the question of why it ever got from draft to ready-to-print status.

That fact ends up costing Joro a lot when the unedited original article is accidentally published and distributed to the whole school. Joro is confronted by the elites in his class who promise punishment for anyone who hurts girls. They’re not even entirely convinced when President Cosmos arrives to defend him, as they suspect she’s one of the three girls in the article. It takes Asunaro to call them off, and she seems incredibly apologetic and upset to the point she doesn’t even check her dialect.

She offers to personally retrieve every copy, but there’s no letting the genie out of the bottle, and Cosmos seems to realize that when she can’t convince the gals. She decides to call off the rest of the practices between her, and basically tells him it will be best to avoid hanging around each other for the time being. Not just her, but Himawari and Pansy too. Cosmos is worried continuing to interact so closely will only create more misunderstandings, for which Joro will bear the brunt.

This leaves Asunaro as the only girl still in Joro’s orbit at the end of the episode, and considering how many twists this show has already presented, part of me can’t help but wonder if this was her plan all along. The article, the rooftop meeting, the shadowing, the “accidental” publishing, her offer to help fix everything, and finally, her eagerness to practice dancing with him (in which she appears to take great joy); all of that can be construed as a sequence of actions undertaken by someone who wanted to likes Joro and wanted to isolate him from the other girls.

If that was the plan, it’s worked perfectly so far. Chances are it wasn’t the plan, because this is Oresuki, which loves flipping the script. But if it was, she hasn’t achieved total victory quite yet; Cosmos watched them dancing on the roof, and despite being a bit of a goofball most of the time, has the smarts to expose and foil Asunaro’s plot…again, if it is indeed even the plot!

Am Donnerstag ver­öf­fent­lichte Eurostat die über Asyl und Flüchtlinge berich­ten­den Gesamtstatistiken aus dem Jahr 2017.

2017 erhiel­ten ins­ge­samt 538.000 Menschen irgend­wel­chen Asylschutz in den EU-Mitgliedsstaaten, um 25% weni­ger, als im Jahr 2016.

Ungarn nahm 1290 Personen auf, dar­un­ter wurde für 105 Bewerbern der Flüchtlingsstatus zuer­kannt, dar­über hin­aus wur­den 1110 Menschen wur­den als Schutzberechtigte aner­kannt, bzw. wur­den gemäß huma­ni­tä­ren Gesichtspunkten 75 vom unga­ri­schen Staat auf­ge­nom­men (die Schutzberechtigten genie­ßen fast die­sel­ben Rechte, wie die Flüchtlinge).

In Ungarn fie­len 130 auf­ge­nom­mene Flüchtlinge auf 1 Million Bewohner, und mit die­sem Anteil ist Ungarn das zweite nach­gie­bigste Land des EU-Ostblocks, im Vergleich war bis­lang aus­schließ­lich Lettland etwas groß­zü­gi­ger, mit dem Anteil 140 Migranten fie­len auf 1 Million Landesbewohner. Unter den ehe­ma­li­gen sozia­lis­ti­schen Ländern erreichte nur Litauen die Zahl über 100 (105/​1 Million), alle ande­ren Länder haben ent­schie­den unter die­ser Zahl geleis­tet. Die schlech­tes­ten Durchschnittszahlen schaff­ten die ande­ren V4-Staaten. Die Slowakei, Polen und Tschechien nah­men pro­por­tio­nal die wenigs­ten Menschen auf, in die­sen Ländern fie­len weni­ger als 20 Flüchtlinge auf 1 Million Bewohner – das ist nur ein Bruchteil des unga­ri­schen Anteils.

Wenn wir jedoch den Anteil der auf­ge­nom­me­nen Migranten mit der Anzahl der Asylbewerber ver­glei­chen, dann schafft es Ungarn auch nur an das Ende der Auflistung. Die unga­ri­schen Behörden gewähr­ten nur 31% der Asylbewerber jeg­li­chen Schutz, noch stren­ger sind im Vergleich hierzu in der EU nur noch Tschechien (Schutzgewährleitung für 12%), Polen (25%) und Frankreich (29%). Großbritannien und Kroatien zeig­ten, ähn­lich wie Ungarn, exakt 31%-igen Aufnahmeanteil auf. Die Deutschen nah­men jeden zwei­ten Antragsteller auf. Die meiste posi­tive Beurteilung beka­men die iri­schen Behörden (89%), aber auch die Litauer (78%) und die Letten (74%) waren her­aus­ra­gend ent­ge­gen­kom­mend.

Außer den 538.000 Menschen nah­men die EU-Länder auch 24.000 Personen aus Flüchtlingslagern außer­halb der EU durch Umsiedlungsprogramme auf. Auch Ungarn war in die­sem Programm betei­ligt.

Insgesamt im Fall von 1,2 Millionen Menschen beur­teil­ten die euro­päi­schen Länder die Asylanträge posi­tiv, d.h. bloß die Hälfte der Bewerber erlang­ten Asylstatus. Von den im Jahre 2017 in Kraft getre­te­nen Urteilsverkündungen waren 970.000 amts­ge­richt­li­che Beschlüsse in ers­ter Instanz, und wei­tere 260.000 nach Widerruf in der zwei­ten Instanz ver­kün­dete Urteile. Bei 46% Urteilsverkündung in ers­ter Instanz und bei 36% der in zwei­ter Instanz beka­men die Asylbewerber Schutz als Asylberechtigte.

Der größte Teil der Flüchtlinge kam aus drei Ländern im Nahen Osten, wo Bürgerkriegszustand herrscht, in die EU: 33% aus Syrien, 19% aus Afghanistan, und 12% aus dem Irak.

Die meis­ten Migranten wur­den von den fol­gen­den Ländern auf­ge­nom­men: Deutschland (325.000 Personen, 60% der ins­ge­samt in die EU Aufgenommenen), Frankreich (40.600), Österreich (34.000), und Schweden (31.200).

Die Hälfte von den 538.000 Flüchtlinge beka­men Asylstatus, die Anderen beka­men die Schutzberechtigung zuge­spro­chen.

Im Vergleich zu der Größe ihrer eige­nen Landesbevölkerung nah­men Deutschland, Österreich und Schweden die meis­ten Migranten auf. In die­sen Ländern fie­len mehr als 3000 Flüchtlinge auf 1 Million Bewohner.

Von den syri­schen und eri­trei­schen Bewerbern erhiel­ten fast alle einen Status, der Anteil der posi­ti­ven Beurteilung liegt in ihrem Fall bei über 90%. Die dritt­stärkste Gruppe der Aufzählung sind die Somalier, 69% von ihnen bewarb sich erfolg­reich. Die Hälfte von den suda­ni­schen, ira­ki­schen und ira­ni­schen Bewerbern bekam Schutz zuge­spro­chen, die Mehrheit der Staatsbürger aus allen ande­ren Ländern wurde abge­lehnt, z.B. nur 46% der Afghanen erhiel­ten Asylrecht.

Aus Europa erhiel­ten 19% der rus­si­schen und ukrai­ni­schen Bewerber Asylschutz, 9% der Kosovoer, 5%  der Albaner. Aus ande­ren euro­päi­schen Ländern wur­den nur spo­ra­disch Asylbewerbungen ein­ge­reicht.

Az Eurostat csü­tört­ö­kön köz­ölte a mene­kül­te­kről szóló 2017-es össze­sí­tett sta­tiszti­ká­kat. 2017-ben össze­sen 538 ezer ember kapott val­a­mi­lyen mene­kült­jogi védel­met az EU tagáll­amai­ban. 25 száz­alék­kal keve­seb­ben, mint 2016-ban. Zomato to lay off 13% of its staff as Covid-19 severely impacts food ordering business

Food delivery platform Zomato will layoff 520 employees, or 13% of its workforce, and temporarily cut salaries of the rest, the company’s founder said in an internal email on Friday, as the Covid-19 pandemic and resultant nationwide lockdown has hit its businesses. Employees who are being let go will receive half their salaries along with health insurance for the next six months or till they find another job, whichever is earlier, Zomato’s founder & CEO Deepinder Goyal said in the email.

Their Employee Stock Ownership Plans (Esops), previously allocated, will however continue to vest during the period. Contract staff will be given two months’ severance pay, Goyal said.

Executives across marketing, events and content, among others, are likely to be hit the most by these layoffs, a person in the know told ET. Zomato employs nearly 4,000 people.

“A large number of restaurants have already shut down permanently, and we know that this is just the tip of the iceberg. I expect the number of restaurants to shrink by 25-40% over the next 6-12 months. What actually happens, for better or worse, is anybody’s guess,” Goyal said.

Last month, rival Swiggy said it will let go staff from its private brand kitchen team, while discontinuing operations at a few other centres. At least 1,000 jobs in its private brands business were affected, sources told ET at the time.

Apart from layoffs and pay cuts, Zomato has decided to make work-from-home – fully or partially — a permanent policy. After payroll, the Gurgaon-headquartered firm’s second highest recurring expense is on real estate and it runs more than 150 offices across the world. “There’s no going back to the ‘normal’ – all we should focus on is building for the ‘new normal’,” he said.

“Covid-19 has been a black swan event for the world economy; therefore, we need to make sure that we preserve as much cash as possible to weather the storm if the business environment gets worse, or continues to be the same for the rest of the year or more…” Goyal wrote in the email to employees.

Goyal said the downsizing and reduction in salaries (as high as 50% in some cases) is aimed at preserving cash amid the uncertainty, adding that he company had enough cash reserves and had brought down monthly cash burn significantly.

Food-delivery volumes have dropped by 60-70% in the past two months compared to pre-Covid19 period, as many restaurants remain shut and consumers keep away from ordering in. ET reported earlier that industry players expect 4 out of 10 restaurants to shutter permanently due to the ongoing crisis .

“Considering what we know at this point, the idea is to make a complete shift towards being a transactions first company, focusing heavily on a small number of large market opportunities in the food value chain,” Goyal added. Over the past few months, both Zomato and Swiggy have entered the grocery delivery space and held discussions with state governments for home delivery of alcohol.

In fact, Zomato has launched grocery delivery across185 cities in India and plans to expand the service to Dubai and Lebanon. The company has also launched food-delivery services in Turkey and takeaways in Australia, New Zealand and Portugal.

“Contactless Dining is the need of the hour for the restaurant industry, and we have already signed up 25,000 restaurants globally,” Goyal said. ET reported on May 14 edition that Zomato was preparing to launch consumer-facing pick up and drop service, mirroring Swiggy’s Genie offering. The company is also exploring opportunities to expand logistics services to businesses outside its platform, ET reported.Multiple internet businesses — including Oyo, Cure.fit, Udaan, BlackBuck, Treebo, Acko, Fab Hotels, Meesho, Shuttl, Capillary, Niki.ai, and Fareportal — have retrenched workers, including temporary staff, in the past few months.
