Princess Latifa is the daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, one of the richest heads of state in the world, the ruler of Dubai and vice-president of the United Arab Emirates.
In February 2018, Princess Latifa tried to flee Dubai with the help of her friends. She got on a boat to India, from where she planned to fly to the United States of America and seek political asylum and start a new life altogether.
But days later, the princess was captured by commandos on a boat in the Indian Ocean through the alleged use of a geo-location malware. She was flown back to Dubai, where she has remained ever since.
But using a phone she said she was secretly given about a year after her capture, Princess Latifa recorded a number of videos over several months which were obtained by BBC Panorama in an investigation.
In these video clips, she documented the series of events which took place when she was captured in the Indian Ocean. She also went on to say that she was being held alone without access to medical or legal help in a villa with windows and doors barred shut, and heavily guarded by police.
Princess Latifa has publicly said that she was trying to escape the stringent laws which are enforced on Emirati women. The ruler of Dubai has said that he is acting in the best interests of his daughter. Both Dubai and the UAE have previously said Princess Latifa was safe in the care of family, despite video evidences hinting towards the hostage-like condition of the Sheikha.
Soon, the Free Latifa Campaign was established by Latifa’s best friend Tiina Jauhiainen and Human rights lawyer David Haigh, campaigner Radha Stirling and the crew of the Nostromo.
Princess Latifa’s capture and imprisonment caused an international outcry and the UAE has come under intense pressure, with calls from the UN and various states to release her. The United Nations human rights office has asked the United Arab Emirates for proof that Princess Latifa, the daughter of Dubai's ruler, is alive.
Human rights chambers across the world are hopeful that a UN investigation will prove to be beneficial in releasing Princess Latifa. However, the investigation comes at a heavy cost for the UAE, as it will not only affect its international image, but also hamper trade relations pivotal for the success of EXPO 2020.
