I know rams and Bolivian butterflies are called mikrogeophagus but do they act like small earth eaters or are they named that because they look similar to true geophagus?

Oh, a fun question! So bear with me a little because taxonomy is often more convoluted than it needs to be.

Within the Cichlidae family, there are multiple subfamilies, typically based on geographic location. Cichlinae includes American Cichlids, such as Geophagus and Mikrogeophagus (also Peacock Bass, Texas Cichlids, etc). Under that is Tribe, of which both these genera are in Geophagini. That alone makes them pretty closely related, but both are actually in the same subtribe of (looks at crumpled paper) Geophagina. Jesus christ. But regardless, they are at least Eartheaters in terms of biological classification.

That said! They also do sift in the sand for food, which makes them Eartheaters by nature too. I'm unsure if all in Geophagini eat this way, but multiple genera do at least.

Earteater - is a member of the cichlid family and in is native to the Amazon River Basin in South America. Eartheater is a common name and the species depicted is Geophagus altifrons. It is benthophagous by nature, taking mouthfuls of substrate (hence its common name) and sifting for edible items, with the remaining materials being expelled via the mouth and gill openings. It prefers clear and backwater environments. It can a reach a maximum length of 26.5cm (about 10.4 inches). O Geophagus, Geophagus Jurupari, é encontrado em toda a bacia amazonica e seus afluentes desde o Peru, Equador e Colômbia até a foz do rio Amazonas no Brasil e no leste da Guiana Francesa. Alimenta-se no fundo do aquário, filtrando a areia à procura de pedaços de comida. Quando à alimentação em si, aceitam bem qualquer tipo de alimento, incluindo granulados, mas têm preferência por alimentos vegetais. É recomendável oferecer uma dieta variada, incluindo comida congelada. Sendo também importante selecionar alimentos que se afundem, porque só vêm comer à superfície em último recurso. Chega a medir entre 15 e 25 cm. É um ciclídeo muito pacífico, sociável e inteligente, mostrando apenas alguma agressividade entre os seus pares. No aquário, nada principalmente pela zona do fundo e raramente vem ao topo. Recomendamos manter em aquários de no mínimo 1 metro e se encaixa perfeitamente em aquários comunitários plantados. Wow I just got off the phone with my friend Tahesia who recently got a job as an aquarium maintenance person and she said that today she went to take care of aquariums at two daycares WHO WERE OPEN FOR BUSINESS AND FIGHTING THE STATE. I’m sorry but that is just the most unethical thing I’ve ever heard of. 2-3 year olds are not going to grasp the concept of social distancing and keep masks and gloves on. The parents who are sending their kids there now should get DYFS called on them.

On a more positive note, she also told me about a guy who lives in a small condo but has a 600 gallon discus biotope with wild brazilian blue heckel discus, altum angels, and geophagus. What a dream.

Mr Blondredhead he is a cichlid called Geophagus Red Head Tapajos. He is a earth digger, distinguishable by the curve of his forehead which indicates that he loves to dig so consider this when buying one of these species. Besides that this cichlid is a very peaceful species of cichlid and is very personable.
