Touki Bouki (Djibril Diop Mambéty, 1973)

Djibril Diop Mambéty once reinterpreted the old cliché about the relationship between movies and dreams by saying, "Cinema is magic in the service of dreams." Touki Bouki is certainly dreamlike, with its jump cuts and flashbacks, its almost hallucinatory saturated colors and its scenes that challenge us to decide whether they represent reality or the characters' fantasies. It was made "the way I dream," Mambéty said. It begins with a nightmare shock: We see a herd of long-horned cattle, filmed with a long lens, approaching us, being guided by a young boy -- a literally bucolic moment. But suddenly the film cuts to a scene of a cow being forced to enter a slaughterhouse, and soon we are inside the abattoir, watching as cattle are being killed, our eyes assaulted by the vivid red of the spurting blood and the filthy, blood-soaked killing floor. It's a horrifying moment, but a real one, and the film, I think, never quite recovers from it. Then we meet the protagonist, a young man called Mory (Magaye Niang). who rides a motorbike with a cow's skull affixed to its handlebars. Mory and his girlfriend, Anta (Myriam Niang), have dreams of escaping their life in the slums on the fringes of Dakar, Senegal, and starting a new one in Paris. On the soundtrack we hear Josephine Baker's song "Paris, Paris, Paris," which becomes a motif in the film, just as later the French soprano Mado Robin's recording of a song about lost love, "Plaisir d'Amour," also recurs. The film then follows Mory and Anta as they explore various ways of getting the money for their trip, some of which are more fantastic than others. When they finally board the ship, however, Mory has a change of heart and runs away, leaving Anta to make the journey on her own. The basic narrative, then, is about the postcolonial dissonance of cultures, and the film is loaded with symbolic motifs like the slaughtered cattle and the skull on Mory's motorbike -- he finds the skull shattered and the bike ruined at the end. But Mambéty's use of the dreamlike elements of montage and camerawork lifts the film above any simplistic symbolic or allegorical treatment of the theme. There are moments in the film that defy literal-minded interpretation: The movie becomes a dream about dreamers.

Portland gave Jerami Grant a fuck ton of money, 5 year $160 million. So it’s safe to say Damian Lillard isn’t being traded anytime soon

Lakers actually doing some dope things. The Cam Reddish and Taurean Prince help a bit with their wing depth, and hopefully Gabe Vincent can continue the production he had on the Heat this playoff run

Chicago is doing their best? (Not really) They resigned Vucevic to a 3 year contract which… yay? I don’t think any bulls fans know or care anymore about him. But they did resign Coby White to a not so expensive contract for 3 years so that’s a dub

The Warriors actually resigned Draymond Green to a 4 year $100 million contract. So the core is staying together for a little bit longer. We’ll see if there continues to be locker room issues (Jordan Poole is gone now so Draymond’s punching bag is gone) and maybe they can make another title run. I’m not optimistic

The Suns do be looking pretty scary with all the good depth signings that they’re getting to back up Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, but I will wait to see how it goes in the regular season. The past few years of KD’s career has convinced me that he needs a lot of team chemistry to work well, so I need to see if the team works well together. That was their downfall this playoffs anyway

Finally the 76ers. This off-season is scary for them. James Hardeb is probably getting traded, so we gotta see what pieces they get back for him. They also lost Shake Milton and Georges Niang, which while they didn’t play much, still feels like it hurts. Lots of questions considering that they made no real moves the first day of free agency. We’ll just wait and see as my anxiety spikes over it

Joel Embiid Spazzes On Nikola Jokic And The Denver Nuggets

Don’t let the media coverage, and the titles of the Youtube videos fool you regarding what happened in this game.

This was a beat down. This was as lopsided of a 1-on-1 battle as you could hope for.

Nikola Jokic managed just 24 points and 8 rebounds and 9 assists and while those are solid numbers, and even great numbers for someone not named Nikola Jokic, he was not up to Embiid’s level last night.

ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne hinted at how important this game was personaly to Joel Embiid and it showed.

The Nuggets actually had a much better start to this game and they were shooting 66% from the field when halftime rolled around, and they lead by double digits at the break. 

Not only that but the Sixer appeared to be sort of shaken, after Shake Milton missed a layup in transition, when he could have passed the ball to George Niang and then the two appeared to get into it on the sidelines during the break.

A calming presence was needed.

Joel Embiid too Hakeem Olajuwon’s comments very personally.

In that 2nd half, every time he got 1-on-1 with Jokic, he attacked. He made sure to get Jokic on his heels by taking a dribble and setting his guy up, and he didn’t feel the need to post up either, he took that man off-the-dribble with no hesitation.

47 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks, from a very focused and intent Joel Embiid.

He left no doubt as to which of the two men is the better center at this moment.

It still kind of concerns me that ESPN felt the need to headline this result as “the two bigs combining for 71 points” because that takes away a whole lot from what was an emphatic Joel Embiid performance.

On March 28th, the Denver Nuggets will play the SIxers again,in Denver this time, so Jokic can get his dub back if he’s really on it.

As for Joel this was also the moment he made the all star voting system look like a joke, because a center that leads the league in scoring and dominates his posititional opposites, not being a starter, is ridiculous.

and Joel made sure to mention that the recent disrespect on his name, has not gone unnoticed.
