I'll admit off the bat, that I am the most casual rugby fan in the world, and by many fans standards, I am the worst type of fan because I am a Springboks supporter.
Don't let that take away from what this South African team just accomplished though, and to help you understand the context under which this team is representing the country, is a task that can't be accomplished in one blog post.
South Africa is a country with an economy that is dying and the gap in wealth inequality is getting bigger and bigger, with an infastructure that is falling apart, and a government unable to manage the administrative, financial headaches of governance.
Basically, these Springboks are the only good thing happening in South Africa.
Packed in to the pre-meal, and way before any of these current players was ever a Springbok, is the history of South Africa itself and what the Springboks represented for the ruling Apartheid government pre-1994, and the liberation of Black South Africans since.
This is not a piece to sway people in to believing in the Springboks as a story of racial intergration and tranformation.
Rather something to help you understand the kind of hurdles every player on the team deals with, and the amount of personal discipline it takes to always put the team and winning first.

In the years to come, books will be written about how these guys had to pull together even in the most trying of times, and Siya Kholisi as the captain of a team that has accomplished the greatest feat in the sport's history.
To help you understand what this team has accomplished, South Africa came in to the 2023 Rugby World Cup as defending champions after winning the 2019 World Cup, only lost 1 game the entire tournament, and won our last 3 games all by 1 point margins.
This is not a Rugby team. This is sporting greatness and excellence. They'll go down as legends of the sport. All of them, every member of both the 2019 and 2023 squads.
Every one of these players had big moments in big games and situations where we absolutely needed it.
Handre Pollard's cool headedness was evident throughout the tournament, with his kick to win the semi-final against England being his most immense.
Eben Etzebeth setting the tone with physicality, always promptly followed by Mbongeni Mbonambi, Franco Mostert and Duane Vermeulen, Ox Nche, Deon Fourie and Kwagga Smith, and this group changed the game in that semi-final.
Pieter-Steph Du Toit's man of the match performance in the final was arguably the best any Springbok has ever played in a final. Cheslin Kolbe's charge down and block against France. Manie Libbok's sublime no-look kick against Scotland.
Everyone had big moments or big performances at key times.
youtube
I have grown attached to this team in a way I have never been attached to a Rugby team.
South Africa's 1995 World Cup victory represented the intention to change with the inclusion of the legendary Chester Williams. In 2007 it was a story of how that change had bred a new generation of winners represented by Byran Habana. The 2019 World Cup in Japan represented a transformation complete with the champions being captained by a Black player for the first time.
This however is not a chapter of the story that needs a transformation narrative.
As a group these players have transcended that. They represent the pinnacle of the sport. The highest level of achievement possible, and our heach coach Rassie Erasmus, the man who masteminded both our victories, all the while challenging the sports's conventions, pushing boundraries, and always keeping the Boks one step ahead.
Growing up Bryan Habana was the most recognisable player in the sport, and I even have a photograph I took of him on my Instagram, but this group, and this captain, with those forwards and those wings, yeah they've now surpassed any South African team, and that's no easy thing to do.
Even more difficult than that is restoring some feeling of national pride at a time when it's becoming harder to create reasons for that.
Thank you to the Boks, they will never be forgotten.

AFL has been messed with by former players and luminaries of the game to serve up a version their sensibilities are happy with. They wanted to turn the clock back to more high scoring and less ferociously defensive AFL games of the 1980s and 1990s. However, there are always side effects that come with any fixes – just ask the medical/pharmaceutical fraternity. AFL: What s**** me about the game and broadcasts. What we have in season 2023 is the ball carrier walking on water in terms of being protected by the umpires. Holding the ball has just disappeared from the umpire’s rules book it seems. Players must not attempt to fight off the tackle but just hang onto the ball for a ball up to be whistled. The obvious ramifications of this are the spate of dangerous tackles, as the tackler attempts to dislodge the ball and/or incapacitate the ball carrier because he cannot get a free kick for the now obsolete holding the ball rule. Players are getting head injuries and being suspended for dangerous tackles, as a consequence of this change to rule interpretation.
AFL Footy in 2023
The game no longer rewards the defender in a bid to always encourage the ball carrier and forward. We now have 4 umpires on the field and this results in a plethora of tiggy touchwood free kicks for slight indiscretions like over the shoulder tackles and numerous marking infractions. However, there is little consistency from umpire to umpire and in game to game on this. You can watch a game where these things are stringently adjudicated on and another where they are let go in the spirit of letting the game flow, it is frustrating to watch as a spectator. I do agree that AFL is an increasingly difficult game to umpire because of the speed of play and the many rule changes over the last few seasons in particular.
Umpiring AFL Rules & Interpretations
Balls getting knocked out of hands during the tackle are another area of high inconsistency. Sometimes this is awarded a free kick to the tackler, as dropping the ball, and many other times it is ignored because the ball carrier is king in AFL. Then, there is the ridiculous stand on the mark rule, where the player with the ball wanders off the line of the mark without penalty and has so much advantage over the defensive team it is a joke really. How can defenders fairly do their job in the current environment? It is so stacked against them that it bastardises the game. As a long time AFL spectator I have serious misgivings about how the game has been manipulated by former players in decision making positions wishing to make the current game in their image.
Too Many Verbose Commentators Ruining The Game
There are too many loud voices in the sport's media. Listening to the over-supply of former players in commentary roles the AFL viewer is assailed with calls for high scoring matches. My own preference is for neither, I enjoy a hard fought game on whatever terms are being dished up. The tight defensive matches played out in the noughties were enthralling contests, especially those between the Eagles and Swans. The endeavour shown by AFL players is almost always ferocious and worth watching. I do not feel that the game needs to be manipulated by players from another era in order to get bums on seats and eyeballs on screens.
Starting this subject at the beginning of February, whilst somewhat disappointing that it shortens your summer break, I believe is a great idea by Holmesglen as it properly assists you in fast tracking your knowledge and expectations ahead of the internship applications for the upcoming year. Furthermore, it also assists the students for life after the course with applying for jobs. Breaking down the importance of resumes, how to talk about yourself in an interview and all the relative skills you need to display in the process were some of the main focuses.
Over the course of the subject I learnt many new things surrounding the application process, designing a resume and cover letter, and how to conduct yourself in the interview process. I have taken a lot of those on board, making numerous changes to resume in the last month. I had never written a cover letter before, so seeing some examples from past students and also gaining some feedback from Sharyn and my peers I was able to gain a basic understanding of the way they should be structured. I put this into practice with the A2 assignment, piecing together three separate cover letters and applications in relation to the position descriptions. I learnt that tailoring not only your selection criteria but your whole resume to have the aspects most relevant and important to the position is the optimal way of going about it. Lastly, with the help of some peer feedback from my classmate Ethan, I was able to get a different perspective on some things I did well but conversely what needs improvement. All in all it was a successful period.
I believe the subject - and the timing of it - was greatly beneficial and will continue to be for me and all the students moving forward. Assisting us in brushing up on our skills for the internship process this year is a perfect tool and catalyst for all our careers and ambitions. I want to thank Sharyn for all the great help she has been over this period, and wish her well in all her future endeavours!
I grew up in a household that loved to watch sports. I was always against the grain when it comes to sports because in the past, I was a very antagonistic sports fan. My family tried to raise me on two premises. There are two baseball teams in Chicago, and you should always root for the team from where you were born. I disagreed with that as I was a White Sox fan through and through and despised the Cubs. I wasn't down with the 1985 Bears, but the 85 Dolphins since they beat them. I also loved the Blackhawks, and eventually found a way to root for the Miami Heat (because I was a very antagonistic sports fan.) However my feelings about sports have been starting to change over the years.
At the end of the day, sports is a game. It's where people compete, but unfortunately it has become much more than that over the years. What started as friendly competition between different humans has now become a pissing contest and a money heist.
First let me talk about the sports industry itself. There are billions of dollars at play here. Billions. Sports is a very marketable commodity and the athletes who participate are paid very large sums of money. I understand that this is what it is and it isn't' anyone's fault. As with most things, human begins find a way to take something beautiful and make it crazy. However, the way some of these athletes present themselves is not cool at all. They are role models to very impressionable young men and women who look up to them. Some of these athletes really do their best to maintain a positive image. People speak of hard work and getting your craft right, which i don't have a problem with. However, the drama show sports has become sucks. We should care more about what goes on in the field, than the locker rooms. The NFL has made itself a year round spectacle with the draft, the combine, and ofcourse we have salary caps and things like that which create much debate between fans.
Fueling the fans anger and "passion" about sports is the talking heads of ESPN and FS1. Listening to the ugliness that comes out of the mouths of people like Colin Cowherd, Skip Bayless just to name a few in insane. These people never have played sports, but they talk like they have so much knowledge about the game. They are very dismissive of people and their opinions. They add fuel to the hate machine that sportsmedia has become.
And the fans are taking things way too far. I have seen so many videos of fans fighting each other over silly stuff. I have seen fans dump popcorn on players heads. Anyone remember the malice at the palace? that was a result of a fan throwing a drink on a player.
As I said earlier, I like the Miami Dolphins. Their quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is one of the nicest, humblest, players i have ever seen, and he had led Miami to a couple of winning seasons, something us Finfans haven't seen since the days of Marino (the guy who made ma fan.) Yet all the complaining and personal attacks on Tua are crazy.
My bottom line is I believe the sports world should be looking at ways where they put kindness and sportsmanship first. I respect peoples opinions but some of the sports talkers out there need to go. Sports has become a world of toxicity and I never really became a huge sports fan until I reached my late 20s and early 30s because I felt I couldn't identify with anything. As I have taken a deep dive into my life, I find myself caring less and less about sports, with the exception of football. Sports is quite the commitment. As I said the NFL runs a year long business. But its only 17 weeks and if you are lucky your team plays a few games in the playoffs where they win and go home. Its not the 162 game marathon baseball is or the 88 game season in basketabll and hockey. It goes by fast, easy to keep up with. However, something needs to be said about the sports culture. The innocence of sports is gone.
People need to remember at the end, its only a game. The players don't care whether or not you have negative feelings towards them. The media only wants you to buy the stuff they advertise in between innings, downs, time outs, whatever. People need to stop taking it so seriously. Start looking at why you take it so seriously. What are you missing? What will help you feel happier? What will make you feel joy? It may be the thrill of victory, but that's not guaranteed. What is guaranteed is the impression you leave on the people around you, and I would strongly caution many sports fans to take that in stride. When you make hurtful remarks, they cannot be taken back. When you go after players, you forget they are human too because of the pedestals they have been placed on. Many sports fans will say they're just spitting facts. Facts don't care about feelings, people do. So maybe less facts, and more empathy is what is needed in the athletic world. These athletes leave the game not the same, and they are lucky to make the money they have, but they bleed red like all of us.
I asked for kindness on a Dolphins fan page on Facebook one day, and people told me to shut up. That this is a sports page and this is how people talk. Change is the most beautiful thing in the world. It has to start somewhere. I hope there are others who feel like I do and want to see less anger and sarcasm. I was there. i was the worst, Looking back I am ashamed how I behaved during my Sox vs Cubs days. I have been trying to grow and at the end of the day, I can only do what I can do. I can decide what I allow in my environment and maybe if this continues, I may have to reconsider my fondness for football and choose kindness and grace instead.
Sorry I rambled alot this week, but it just was on my mind so I spoke on it. How do you feel?
Joel Embiid Spazzes On Nikola Jokic And The Denver Nuggets
youtube
Don’t let the media coverage, and the titles of the Youtube videos fool you regarding what happened in this game.
This was a beat down. This was as lopsided of a 1-on-1 battle as you could hope for.
Nikola Jokic managed just 24 points and 8 rebounds and 9 assists and while those are solid numbers, and even great numbers for someone not named Nikola Jokic, he was not up to Embiid’s level last night.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne hinted at how important this game was personaly to Joel Embiid and it showed.
youtube
The Nuggets actually had a much better start to this game and they were shooting 66% from the field when halftime rolled around, and they lead by double digits at the break.
Not only that but the Sixer appeared to be sort of shaken, after Shake Milton missed a layup in transition, when he could have passed the ball to George Niang and then the two appeared to get into it on the sidelines during the break.
A calming presence was needed.
youtube
Joel Embiid too Hakeem Olajuwon’s comments very personally.
In that 2nd half, every time he got 1-on-1 with Jokic, he attacked. He made sure to get Jokic on his heels by taking a dribble and setting his guy up, and he didn’t feel the need to post up either, he took that man off-the-dribble with no hesitation.
47 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks, from a very focused and intent Joel Embiid.
He left no doubt as to which of the two men is the better center at this moment.
It still kind of concerns me that ESPN felt the need to headline this result as “the two bigs combining for 71 points” because that takes away a whole lot from what was an emphatic Joel Embiid performance.
On March 28th, the Denver Nuggets will play the SIxers again,in Denver this time, so Jokic can get his dub back if he’s really on it.
As for Joel this was also the moment he made the all star voting system look like a joke, because a center that leads the league in scoring and dominates his posititional opposites, not being a starter, is ridiculous.
and Joel made sure to mention that the recent disrespect on his name, has not gone unnoticed.
People all over the world consider the game a pastime and play it daily. Sports bring joy and health to our body and mind. Journalists are spreading it globally to bring such sport to all the people around the world and have them participate in games and competitions worldwide. World Sports Journalists' Day is the day we celebrate this special act of theirs. It is observed on July 2 of every year. The day also aims to acknowledge the work of sports journalists and encourage them to excel in their work. It is noteworthy that the first organisation called the International Sports Press Association was started in 1924 for sports journalists..!
"Sports Journalists' Day on July 2 is a day to celebrate the journalists who spread this wonderful sport around the world, which strengthens the body and mind"
