ginny’s nightmares wouldn’t stop.

they began before the battle, but they used to consist of dream images of harry dying.

or george.

or ron.

or anyone she loved.

but now, all she saw was memories.

all she saw was fred’s body, and all she felt was the pain she felt when she first laid eyes on him and realized he was gone.

she didn’t argue when her mom told her she needed to finish her schooling at hogwarts; she figured it would maybe give her more time to be a kid again.

but ginny felt more aged now than she ever had before.

she woke with a start.

she felt tears in the corner of her eyes, and she wiped them away with the edge of her hand.

the gryffindor common room’s fire was crackling to her left, and she took a deep breath as she sat up on the couch.

she put her face in her hands, and then she heard someone sit beside her.

“you okay, gin?”

she looked up to see neville, and her tense shoulders relaxed.

neville understood.

he always did.

“not really,” she answered honestly.

“bad dreams?”

“the same one.”

neville nodded slightly, but he kept his eyes on her.

she tried not to make eye contact; she knew if she did she would cry.

“how are you holding up with everything?”

“oh, harry and i were never going to work.”

“that’s not what i’m talking about.”

she dared to look up at him then, and his blue eyes were intense.

he was the first person in a long time to ask her how she felt about the war, not her break up with harry.

she could not hold her tears in any longer, and he pulled her close to his side.

she buried her head in his shoulder, and he rested his chin on the top of her head.

“it’s okay,” he reassured, “i got you.”

she sniffled.

“you always have, neville. thank you.”

she knew he had a sad smile spread across his face. she didn’t even have to look at him.

“ginny-” he started.

“i know. i have known for the past year.”

she lifted her head from his shoulder and looked into his eyes.

his hand cupped her cheek.

“can i?” he asked hesitantly, “are you sure?”

she nodded and closed the gap between them.

their lips brushed against each other’s softly only for a moment, but it was the most comforted ginny had felt in months.

“yeah,” she told him, “always.”
