it’s the playing chicken part that gets me now that im an old biddy, like if u WANT the fresley, then let it fucking happen ya allah, but we know joss wanted to pin the blame ok gunn and then he did, and fucking knox was always supposed to be roadblock, and then wesley dies too, with gunn following right along like!!!! i just want SOME consistency in my tragedies!!! so gunn/fred can’t exist bc their love broke some unholy code that joss cant have a black man be happy for five mins or the resident autism-coded girl be anything more than a object of male affection when she WAS a champion through her last breath!!! weslilah WAS a tragedy, and there was nothing wrong with KEEPING it a coherent tragedy to help wesley come to terms with his own life and choices while also respecting his choice to be with lilah and love her enough to chop her up so she’s not relegated to a fate worse than death. we KNEW joss was obsessed with tragedy, and fine i get it even tho i hate it, WHY couldn’t it be consistent???? why did we play chicken with fresley and add unnecessary dollops of manpain and then ruin gunn and fred and wesley along the way!? is it a wonder why the shows didn’t get renewed!? whom the fuck was tryna watch misery porn on tv when both shows started off as campy hero narratives, like COME ON 💀💀💀

So @mimeparadox and I were discussing PoI S5/S4B's problems, as you do, and one of the things that stood out was the way so many of the strong developments of the last few eps weren't allowed to breathe. This synthesized with several other percolating ideas into "what if the core thrust of S5 wasn't bringing various things to a conclusion, but about the developing transhumanist love story between Shaw and TM!Root" Boom. Shot to the arm for plot, character, and themes, while still having the space for the show's procedural requirements. (As well as continuing my running gag that PoI is actually Nolan/Plageman's Angel fixfic)

Blonde in Alley doesn’t get eaten for once and fights back: Nice :) fun subversion of trope sometimes happens in specific horror movie (though considering it is called Buffy, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER we kind of can see that happening so it’s not exactly the “masterclass in subverting expectations” as one pretentious twitter user has said. And it WAS NOT THE OPENING SCENE, we saw her in action and figured she wouldn’t die in the first episode of her own show :)) She’s stronger than the vampires which is cool :)

Man saving blonde in alley but turns out to be a vampire that almost wants to eat her himself: Awesome and subverting the big strapping hero trope (bc you were suppose to think “oh, boy just another they save damsels show” and then it subverts into something that could be more sinister) into something darker and considering he was pretending to be drunk and the show uses his bloodlust as an allegory for alcoholism, and drinking from Buffy and caused him to relapse and he cuts himself off from the ones he save. Sets up something interesting about walking a dark line and dualism of personality. Phew...I love redemption and betterment stories over “being chosen” they’re more complex

For the ship grading meme: Stelena, Delena, Bangel, Spuffy, Caroline/Matt, Caroline/Tyler, Klaroline, Fred/Wesley, Cangel, Frunn. I'm expecting some amusingly low grades here :)

(Suffice to say, these are all about my subjective tastes/interpretations)

Stelena: E. 

It’s bland, has a few nominally cute moments, but mostly avoids being too toxic. But it’s also just… badly written.

Delena: F Minus Minus Minus Minus Minus. 

Damon’s love for Elena comes out of nowhere, Elena’s for Damon is equally inexplicable, the whole dynamic does nothing but make both characters less watchable when they’re actually together, and I don’t even care much for Elena overall anyway. (I mean, I don’t hate her, but…)

Bangel: E Minus.

Not interesting to me, not my thing, has no way of working post AtS Season 1 short of some major life changes for both of them. Also, at least 50% of all hardcore Bangel shippers annoy the crap out of me, either with their Xander bashing or them taking their Anti-Spikeness too far, or other such nonsense.

Spuffy:  E Minus. 

In theory, I could maybe almost like it. As written, it makes no sense in the show, 20% of hardcore Spuffy shippers are absolutely insufferable and another 20% are annoying at a minimum, especially once their anti-Angel arguments start to get increasingly nonsensical. That and there’s no logical Reason for Spike not to have been killed sometime between 4x20 and 5x12 - after, there’s some logic for his continued presence (Some). But Spike’s love for Buffy comes from left field, Buffy’s,…. thing with him in Season 6 makes no sense in it’s initiation, in a lot of ways, nor most of the ways she acts regarding him in Season 7 - just… poorly written, poorly executed, and Spike muddies things that did not need to be muddied.

If you asked me which I disliked more, I’d say I dislike Spuffy as a ship more, but I’m honestly more annoyed by your average hardcore Bangel shipper than your average hardcore Spuffy shipper.

Caroline/Matt: B. 

It was cute.

Forwood: B Plus

I like it, but it gets so overshadowed that it’s hard to really get into. 

Klaroline: F. 

Klaus being into her comes from nowhere, Klaus hung around on the show way too long, Klaus is… just fucking awful without actually being interesting or fun anything worthwhile. Caroline being into him makes no sense of it ever happening - attracted to him, sure, I could sorta buy the hatefucking they did in TVD season 5, but that’s all. 

Fresley: E Minus Minus

In theory, maybe it could have been done well. But with the show creating a stupid love triangle and darkening Wesley in all sorts of fun and interesting ways, Fresley is just… no. Not to mention the handful of creepy-stalker episodes he gets on her (3x14, 3x15 and there’s one in Season 4, where it’s a bit creepy)… He loves the idea of Fred, because he feels like a good person should love her, and her loving him would ‘prove’ the inner darkishness he’s got isn’t really a part of him. And Fred deserves better than that. They would be equally terrible for eachother. (Though if I never again have to hear the words ‘Madonna/Whore’ or ‘Mommy Issues’ in regards to Wesley re: Fresley, it would be too soon)

Cangel: C Plus

It could have been done much better, and I’m too diehard of a Xandelia shipper to ever really ship Cangel, but it had it’s moments, and I categorically disagree with any argument that says Angel never loved Cordelia (especially when it comes from bitter Bangel shippers)

Frunn: B

It’s cute. Should have been a thing longer, but I think they wrote the collapse of it from Gunn’s end reasonably well, tbh. The Succeeding Fresley was not good, however.

1. What is your opinion on season 4?

not a fan. I found the whole thing to be depressing and draining, and it wasn’t the show I fell in love with. it’s not that I don’t like depressing things, cause I do. buffy season 6 is a good example of sad stuff done right. there was a purpose to all the sadness and that was to show life as the big bad, and buffy overcoming it by herself, and the causes of the suffering everybody endures are problems more internal to the characters, which I find to be more relatable. angel season 4 had none of that, as it was essentially just an collection of apocalypse arcs with almost no levity or purpose whatsoever. there was no message, the ending wasn’t satisfying, and it fucking ruined cordelia’s character. there were a few things I enjoyed about it tho, like weslah and the absolutely amazing jasmine arc (I feel like jasmine made the show feel less grim for a time, even if it was all fake and for the purpose of eating people).

3. What is your opinion on Connor?

meh. I don’t have a strong opinion of him. before getting to season 3 I knew people hated him but for the majority of the show I was kinda neutral to him. I guess I kinda dislike some of the things the show did with him like making him sleep with cordy and how he followed jasmine but imo that’s a season 4 problem in general. I kinda enjoyed him in origin once he was less angsty and we got to see how angel was affected by erasing connor’s memory. dad!angel is the cutest angel.

5. What is your top 5 favorite (characters/episodes)?

Birthday

A Hole In The World (as much as I’m against the show fridging fred, and am not exactly fond of fresley, I tend to like really sad stuff. this episode had my bawling and it took me a while to get over fred’s death. so I guess I like it. I think it was also done really well, and it introduced illyria, who’s a fucking badass)

Orpheus (even though I don’t like season 4 I love this episode, and how we got to see into angel and faith’s subconscious’s. plus fred and willow being gay is always a plus)

tbh I’m not 100% certain on these episodes so I’ll list a few honourable mentions: disharmony, dear boy, spin the bottle, smile time, five by five, waiting in the wings, and sleep tight.

13. Which character do you wish was developed more?

there are a lot of them. lorne didn’t really get much development after the pylea arc, gunn and fred didn’t really have any major arcs, harmony was tragically underused and I was disappointed with the show when they made her turn evil again in season 5, illyria didn’t really get an arc independent from wesley, and darla was killed off way too quickly and in a very unfeminist way that made me unsatisfied with her character.

15. Tell me an unpopular opinion you have about the show.

so fucking many

I didn’t like not fade away. there, I said it. I had very high expectations for that episode, since it’s the highest rated ats episode on imdb and a lot of fans have talked about how it’s one of the best series finales of all time, and how it accurately portrayed the show’s theme. but then I got to it and ended up being really bored. the final arc of the show took way too long to develop and felt kinda rushed, and the only moments I really enjoyed in that episode were the ones between wesley and illyria, plus the fool for love callback. I guess I’ve only seen it once so my opinion could change but it severely underwhelmed me, despite the fact that I really love season 5.

I like eve. she was cool.

I don’t like wolfram and hart. they confuse and aggravate me so much. it’s not like I didn’t like lilah or how the group joined the bad guys in the last season but I felt they were underdeveloped and I had no idea what their motivation was, and why the hell they cared so much about angel. I definitely prefer the seasonal villains to the main overarching one.

I’m not super fond of doyle. he was entertaining but I definitely prefer the show with wesley.

I’m also not that into season 1. I found that a lot of fans really like the group dynamic in the season and the character arcs but personally I just don’t see it. there isn’t really a main plot or anything and there are only a few episodes I really enjoy. plus I don’t really start liking angel’s character until season 2.

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?

Uhh... off the top of my head, no. In the Harry Potter fandom, people have very strong opinions about ships I find terrible or unlikely and that makes me dislike them a bit more (like Wolfstar or Drarry). 

But yeah, I mostly only truly enjoy one pairing or two per fandom and it’s just something that happens without outside interference. If I do get influenced by a pairing, it’s probably a positive influence. (Although I enjoyed Fresley better before joining the Buffyverse fandom.)

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?

Again, no? I think fandom can have the ability to make me like or dislike a ship more, but its influence on me is usually small or mild. Fandom wouldn’t make me like a ship I previously hated. 

Recently, I got asked about Frunn a lot, and I do think that made me appreciate them more, but, like I said, I didn’t dislike them before, so.. 

7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?

I think I liked Spike for a while, before watching the whole show, or even after. Now, I cannot stand him. Just get him the fuck out of my face. I also used to like Cordelia or Cangel a bit more.

Sorry for the lame answers... My views on shows are usually fixed or depend mostly on me. Sometimes I’m made aware of prejudices or problems I didn’t notice before, and I change my opinions accordingly but, apart from that, I don’t think I’m heavily influenced by fandom in this regard. Uhm... well, lessee.. Fresley, uhm, Gunn/Wesley, Angel/Wesley, Buffy/Willow, Buffy/Xander (it’s popular in some circles, just not Tumblr), uhm... Cordelia/Fred, Buffy/Cordelia (outsizedly popular on Tumblr :P)... Olicity, Westallen, Fuffy (sorta), Tara/Buffy, Red Beauty, in OUAT and Fangel

3. Any fandoms that don’t appeal to you?

The larger Marvel/MCU fandom, the Star Wars (especially TFA) fandom, 4. Have you ever unfollowed someone? Why?Yeah, duh. I’ve unfollowed due to an excess of disagreement without any features I liked about the blog, or if their opinions started to enrage me with their wrongness. I’ve unfollowed if the blog posts too much content I’m not into (other fandoms, ships I don’t care for, etc), or if they are nothing but reblogs AND very very prolific (like hundreds of posts in a very short span). Also, for not tagging shit so my blacklist can’t filter it.

Basically, I unfollow when the downsides of following a blog outweigh the upsides.5. Do you have a NoTP in [insert fandom here]?

My major NOTPs are Spuffy, Spander, Spangel, Bangel, Fresley (sorta - I waffle on if it is NOTP territory or not), Klaroline6. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?The Spuffy and Bangel fandoms have never actually helped their case, broadly speaking. But I already didn’t like them. The Spangel and Spander fandoms are generally fairly tolerable. The Captain Swan fandom, or at least the nasty parts of it.

Uhm... Westallen fandom, tbh.

8. Unpopular opinion about [insert fandom here]?

BtVS - Spike’s storylines, especially in Seasons 4 and 5, are usually incoherent when actually placed in their larger context in the show, and I really really don’t like the way his story is written.

AtS - Kate Lockley should have joined the main cast; also, Bonus - I don’t really gaf about Doyle’s death. Bonus Bonus - Not Fade Away was a horrible series finale.

Arrow - Olicity makes little sense and suffers from a huge excess of tell, very little show, and I’m very happy they’re not together anymore.

The Flash - Westallen should have happened much sooner, if it was gonna happen. Slow-burn works sometimes, but all it did with Iris and Barry, especially in Season 1, is make them look unpleasant vis-a-vis the other.

Legends of Tommorrow - No idea what’s actually unpopular here. Uhm... Time Canary?

Supergirl - Uhm... well, Karamel seems popular, but I don’t like Karamel. I just don’t see romantic chemistry there. 

OUAT - SwanQueen fics set in Season 1 are weird and a lil messed up, IMO. Yeah, there was tons of chemistry even in Season 1, but the idea of them getting in a relationship? *grimaces* Not my thing. Also, only unpopular in SQ circles, but I don’t see anything inherently abusive in Captain Swan, and I almost always roll my eyes when I see people calling it that.

AoS - (unpopular in my corner of this riven fandom) I don’t want Skye ‘breaking away’ from S.H.I.E.L.D.

Red Versus Blue - I liked Connie/C.T. and ship Wash/C.T.

The Vampire Diaries - Fuck Klaus. I hate him. Horrible, unlikeable, unappealing character. He’s not even one of those characters that is not actually likeable as a person but is actually interesting or something. No, he’s just rotten and unlikeable through and through and I see absolutely no reason why I should give two tenths of a shit about his story or him.
