have you watched any like prestigious anime movies? things like satoshi kon works, ghost in the shell, ghibli movies?
I've seen every Satoshi Kon film, I've seen every Miyazaki film except Totoro, I've seen Akira, I've seen Ghost in the Shell. I've also seen somewhat more obscure stuff like Jin-Roh, Angel's Egg, and Memories.
GitS was actually a major inspiration for one of my pre-Bavitz novels, but I don't care much for it. The film is like 90% really boring talking about a plot that is supremely difficult to follow (even after rewatching), then an awesome, awesome climax action scene. That climax is so good it kinda overwrites how dull the rest of the movie is. WIW even has a nod to it, with the evolutionary tree in the museum.
Kon's good, though I think Perfect Blue towers over the rest of his work. I used to really love Paprika, even listing it as my 6th favorite film as one point, but the more I rewatch it the more the cracks show, so I'm a lot more lukewarm on it now. I didn't care much for Millennium Actress or Tokyo Godfathers. Not bad films by any means, but didn't leave a big impact on me.
As far as Miyazaki, Nausicaa is one of my very few 10 out of 10 films, and I also consider Princess Mononoke and Boy and the Heron to be masterpiece tier. There isn't a bad Miyazaki film except Ponyo; even his more obscure efforts like Porco Rosso are better than most things out there. He does sometimes have baffling flaws, though, like the perfunctorily abrupt ending to Howl's.
Akira's awesome. Goes the opposite route of GitS by saying "Yeah don't try thinking about the plot, we're not explaining all this shit from the manga" and it works, the film is cool as fuck.

Voice Actress Atsuko Tanaka passed away on August 20, after a year-long battle against an undisclosed illness.
Unfortunately today we lost a great voice actress, who was mostly known for voicing Makoto Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell, Bayonetta from the Bayonetta video game franchise, Lisa Lisa from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Konan from Naruto, Frances Midford from Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) and Hanami from Jujutsu Kaisen.
Her portrayal in the shows she was part of were iconic and will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace 🕊️

The entire 3-minute city ambiance scene from Ghost in the Shell (1995) is already one of the best moments in all of cinema imo, but I NEED to talk about my absolute favorite part from it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That brief moment when Major Kusanagi and a stranger with her exact same body model catch a glance at one another. How quickly the initial curiosity of seeing the doppelgänger turns into a feeling of unease as the boat carries her away.
She will never meet this stranger. She'll never know anything about her other than the simple reminder that every piece of her cybernetic body is not unique to her. There is no part of her other than her brain and all its memories that she has any true ownership of, and even that isn't immune to being hacked and potentially erased by outside forces. Despite being a part of a bustling city, all she can do is reflect on how utterly isolated she feels as a living being.
How can she possibly define her humanity when she herself is confined in the form of what is essentially a highly modified weapon? How can she relate to others when she has more in common with the mannequins on display in a shopping mall than with the any of the people walking the streets?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of this inner turmoil at one’s own existence conveyed without a SINGLE word of dialogue spoken. Now that's the power of cinema if I've ever seen it!
