My hand hurts!  Anyways, I had been thinking ‘Oh I only need to do megas for Kojiki and Hitorigami’ and I forgot I had a Gardevoir on the team.  Kushinadahime is too many letters for the nickname limit so she’s just Kushina.  Conveniently I can use the mythical figure’s comb motif with the Gardevoir line’s horn things.

I’m really fortunate to have stumbled upon this Japanese costume museum and this blogpost about wedding kimono.  Tonight I learned that the dangly tassel ornament on a wedding kimono is actually the sheath of a KNIFE!  I love it.

Also I forgot at first that I was going for a mask theme with my megas so I kinda tacked that little accessory mask on her head at the last minute.  The symbolism of ‘they turn into something different’ is gone, but Mega Gardevoir isn’t that different from regular Gardevoir so let’s say it’s on theme.

When I bought my copy of Alpha Sapphire it had a previous owner's save data, but the file had the default name 'Brendan' and like a dozen Pokemon. Like this guy had one badge. Josh the Boyfriend did the busywork of getting that file to the name rater, and from there I named them all and shoved them into the bank. I just beat the Delta Episode in my own file, so now I'm finally putting those original refugees back in. Kojiki finally gets to meet his big sister Mae. She's named and modeled after the Sapphire player character because her OT is 'Brendan' and I felt like that fit. Although, Hitorigami, who was the sacrifice from that file, is future-themed so maybe all those Pokemon should also have outfits that match? Or not. I don't know yet. So this is just a tentative design, I just wanted to commemorate Mae coming home.

I stopped working on Pokemon stuff for a while to work on Laserwing stuff. But now I'm trying to catch back up in Pokemon, at least for a little while. I think what slowed me down was that I wanted to stream every big art piece for my Alpha Sapphire team and I never found good time for that. Anyways, one of the things I had never pinned down was a trainer outfit for myself, so here's a design.

This is horribly anachronistic, of course. It's based very loosely on ancient Japanese clothes but also on May's outfit in Alpha Sapphire. The colors are pulled straight from my version of May's outfit in my normal Sapphire art. I highly doubt you could find this shade of purple in any ancient culture's clothing, the dye for it would be really hard to make. But I want purple, so there. The glasses are out of place but I need them to see.

For a split second I considered that maybe I should design myself an outfit based on ancient Filipino clothes, because I'm not Japanese. But that's a whole research project I'd have to start first. Maybe someday. Also it would make me stand out even worse next to all the gijinka designs for my team!

Put a lil babby Kojiki in there at the last minute to make this post cuter.

Went back to square one with Hitorigami.  Less sleek, edgy cyberpunk and more ‘street rat living in an exploded laboratory.’  It occurred to me that as the world sacrifice she comes from a previous iteration of the world Kojiki and co. are traveling in.  So she’s from the past, her technology aesthetic should be some kind of mysterious precursor tech.  So I’m going with a very vaguely Mega Man Legends kind of feel.  Sorta!

We had tried to stream, and our internet slowed down to a point where we just couldn’t.  But I had drank an energy drink right before, so now I’m Awake and trying to be productive.  Here’s a teen and adult design for Uzume, who is now a Mightyena.

Mizuhanome’s straw hat is called an ‘amigasa.’  Searching for reference images also got me some random girls’ group photos labeled ‘amigas.’  I feel like that’s weirdly perfect synergy for a Ludicolo.

I’ve had my Alpha Sapphire file in limbo in Kyogre’s eternal rain because I want to work on some designs before I progress the storyline.

Unfortunately for Kojiki’s mega I started trying to learn about samurai armor.  This wasn’t my original intention, because his other outfits reference a time period before samurai armor would have been invented.  But I wanted mega evos to have masks as part of their motif, and I learned that samurai armor sometimes came with a face shield that would be designed to look like an intimidating face.  And it snowballed from there.

The only other Pokemon on my team who has a mega is Hitorigami, whose aesthetic is completely different.  She’s going to get a Mega Man helmet so that’s less research.  Thank goodness because I have no idea what I would do for the others.

After so much deliberation, Hitorigami’s design is finished.  Including mega form!  The original cyberpunk concept only did half of what I needed.  This Mega Man Legends inspired aesthetic is supposed to evoke both the future and the past.  You go through some caves, you find some crystals, maybe you awaken a sleeping precursor killbot...or just a gremlin.

I’m still working on the champion pics for my last Sapphire run...very slowly.  Work was really exhausting over the holidays and my hands aren’t doing so good.  In the meanwhile I’ve been playing Alpha Sapphire, directly after regular Sapphire so I can see the differences more clearly.  I want to make this cartridge a permanent storage for some of my older Pokemon, who I’ve been transferring up the generations because I’m worried about Bank eventually going down in the next few years.  I’m picking 6th gen for their forever home because it’s got Pokemon-Amie and Super Training so it’s easy to spend a lot of time with my favorites.

But before I can cram all my guys in, I want to beat the game regular.  I’ve told the Pokemon in this run that their world was chosen to be a home for powerful beings from beyond their reality.  But if those aliens invaded all at once, the natives of their world would be overwhelmed.  The Pokemon I catch in Alpha Sapphire are tasked with strengthening their world and themselves to prepare for that mass migration.

In my original Sapphire run, from when I was in high school, I did the weeaboo cringe thing and named my Pokemon after Japanese words I got from punching English words into an online dictionary.  That’s why the gijinka characters from that time period have names like ‘Inu’ and ‘Tanuki.’  In the spirit of that, I’m going to aim to name all my Alpha Sapphire guys after Shinto deities and artifacts.  I’m also trying to do some research on ancient Japan so that I know what I’m doing with outfit designs.  It’s an imperfect process and I’m probably going to end up with some real cringe by the end of it, but that’s okay.

Kojiki, my starter for this run, is going to write down everything he can about his world, in its relatively untouched state, as a historical record of the time before the migration.  He’s turning into a history nerd, every time the actual plot of the game brings up ancient Kyogre/Groudon/Rayquaza lore he gets really interested.  He’s named for the Records of Ancient Matters, the oldest surviving written account of Japanese history and Shinto legends.  The second oldest book is called the Chronicles of Japan, the Nihon Shoki.  So his full name is Kojiki Shoki, at least until I find out that those words together mean something completely different and inappropriate.

Uzume is the Pokemon they showed me for the catching and DexNav tutorial.  I assume that encounter is always a Poochyena with Fire Fang?  Probably?  Since she has a fire attack I kind of wish I could’ve named her Amaterasu, but that name’s been taken since my original Sapphire run.  I named my Milotic that because I caught/raised/evolved her the hard way and thus her name needed to be Special.  So instead, Uzume’s namesake is the goddess who lured Amaterasu out of a cave by dancing.  I don’t know how prevalent dancing is going to be for my Uzume, I already tried teaching her Swords Dance and she can’t learn it.

I was going to draw a few more designs from this run, but my hands were going numb.  And now my hands are numb again from typing too much, haha.

A rough draft for Kojiki’s fully evolved design.  Yes I skipped over Marshtomp.  I’ll go back later.  I’m not sure exactly how to execute the mega evolution but mostly because I wanna do some more research first.

A group photo of the Alpha Sapphire team.  I drew them together to see how they look as a group.  They’re mostly cohesive, aside from Hitorigami who is supposed to stand out.  They also all look distinct even without color.

My copy of Alpha Sapphire was used so it had a pre-existing file in it. Thus, I had to move everyone out of it and designate a world sacrifice. Here's her. Hitorigami stands out from the prehistoric-Japan-themed regular cast by being some weird far future cyberpunk thing. I'm not fully satisfied with the design. I'm going to take a second pass at those Shadow the Hedgehog shoes, absolutely.

This design ended up interesting because somehow I jumped from Jomon period costume to Yayoi to a geisha-inspired hairstyle and a real wtf clothing style. It just kinda fit for what I was looking to do, which was make a Wingull and Pelipper girl.

Totori is the first time I've ever tried raising a Pelipper. She's okay. I'm still not sure what a good moveset is for a Pelipper, so she just has Fly and some whatever moves.
