BEST GIRL CREWMATE - Bracket C
Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut
Charlotte Chiffon (Big Mom Pirates, Fire Tank Pirates)
No propaganda submitted :(
Charlotte Lola (Big Mom Pirates, Rolling Pirates)
— She was a daughter of Big Mom, but when she tried to set her up with Prince Loki of Elbaf, Lola ran away to create her own crew and find a man she would want to marry. She became the captain of the Rolling Pirates and traveled around, proposing wherever she went, eventually getting captured by Moria and her Shadow taken. / We've never seen Lola fight, but we know she's fairly strong because her Zombie, also named Lola, inherited her combat skill and fighting style. Both Lolas were allies to the Straw Hats during Thriller Bark, Zombie Lola protected Nami and Lola gave Luffy her collected Shadows so that he could fight Oars. Lola even gave Nami Big Mom's Vivre Card, which was very useful later on. / Post-Timeskip, the Rolling Pirates went to Dressrosa and met Bege there, with Lola's twin sister Chiffon. After a run-in with the Marines, Lola proposed to Gotti, a member of Bege's crew, and they got married.

Engaging with the One Piece fandom has led me to realize that people don't generally like Thriller Bark even though it's one of my favorite arcs.
The aesthetics
The concept of the Strawhats getting lost in their world's version of the Bermuda Triangle and winding up on the doorstep of one of the Shichibukai who is now targeting them. It's a setup that's basically the perfect self-contained adventure.
Gecko Moria himself is a great villain who sets up Kaidou as this devastating, demoralizing threat looming in the background until that finally comes to fruition in Wano.
Moria's zombie army contains more call-forwards such as the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma, who also becomes relevant in Wano. Zoro defeating Ryuma is how he obtains Shusui, arguably his most iconic sword. I'm also pretty sure Oars is going to be relevant very soon when the Strawhats inevitably to go Elbaf. And there was Captain John, a member of the Rocks Pirates whose treasure map is what convinces Buggy to help Luffy's jailbreak from Impel Down.
A lot of minor zombies are memorable too, like Tararan the giant spider monkey. It's also been implied Hippo Gentleman is a subtle reference to Wapol becoming a toymaking mogul after his defeat, as all of the Wild Zombies are based on toys Perona owns.
The Kage Kage no Mi is cracked. The sheer creativity it took for Moria to use a shadow-manipulating power to raise an army of not even just zombies but Frankensteinian supersoldiers. Because it turns out shadows function as auxiliary souls and can be placed into new hosts to breathe life into them and it doesn't matter if those hosts are alive, dead, or biologically impossible abominations that are literally stitched together. That's not even all Moria does with it either, since his own shadow is basically a second him that functions like a logia user. He can switch places with his shadow at any point, allowing him to functionally teleport. He can put his shadow into your shadow and control you. He can absorb his entire stockpile of stolen souls and turn into a kaijuu. He can just plain stab you with a shadow. Plus, as a kicker, the mere act of Moria taking your shadow means you will die in the sun like a vampire.
Dr. Hogback is another great villain. The sheer depravity it takes to steal the corpse of a woman who rejected you and reanimate her as a servant who you physically abuse. Chopper used to idolize this man.
Perona is best girl
Sanji laying into Absalom for eating the fruit he wanted to eat is yet another call-forward to Wano; Sanji's Raid Suit, Stealth Black.
Luffy asks no less than three undead creatures to join his crew. One of them actually says yes, and Brook remains an invaluable member of the Strawhat Pirates.
You know what? Just Brook himself.
Robin's outfit
Usopp's outfit
Nightmare Luffy, which is a powerup Luffy liked so much that he modeled Gear Fourth after it.
Another of Usopp's lies turned into an accidental truth, as there was a cerberus.
"NOTHING HAPPENED."
"I'M ALREADY NEGATIVE!"
"AN OLD MAN WITH A WOUND!?"
Lola turned out to be one of Big Mom's children and is actually the first Charlotte to appear in the series. She is also the first person to actually tell us what a vivre card is.
This is the first time we actually get to know Bartholomew Kuma after his introduction which was a glorified cameo. He shows up out of nowhere (literally) and what news does he bring? Blackbeard has become a Shichibukai, having bribed the World Government for the position by capturing Ace.
Between the above point and Sabaody Archipelago introducing us to the Celestial Dragons and ending with the Strawhats getting absolutely destroyed, you could argue that Thriller Bark was the last relatively low-stakes and "fun" arc.

Doughnut of lies Ch. 5
Tumblr media
Feeling blood drip from your mouth and run down your chin to fall into the large puddle on the floor you blinked slowly and listened to the two men talk outside of the room.
"Are you questioning my decisions?" the man that had been beating you for the past... you didn't even know how long it had been... said in an annoyed voice
"No! No boss all I am saying is well the girl isn't talking. She hasn't said one thing about the Big Mom pirates. She's ain't gonna hold up much longer so maybe we should just cut our losses and sell her..."
"Sell her?! Do you know how much treasure Big Mom has on her island?!"
"Yea but that girl's an omega, they go for a high price, I ain't seen no claiming mark on er' either. An unclaimed omega is rare, more rare than even mermaids..."
Hearing the other male hum you closed your eyes, God you'd rather die than be someone's slave. Just kill me. Please just let me die.
"If the bitch doesn't talk by the end of the day we'll sell her."
"Yes boss."
Looking up when the door opened you glared at the male who narrowed his eyes at you.
"I'm guessing you heard all that?" he huffed. When she still didn't answer he shook his head and grabbed her small neck in his hand. "So what's it gonna be girl? You tell me what I want to know and I'll let you go."
Lies. All of it was lies, even if you told him what he wanted to know he would still sell you. You weren't stupid like he thought you were. Besides even if Big Mom wasn't the nicest person she had still taken you in and her children were your friends, you would never betray them. You would never betray the man you loved. Spitting blood on his face you heard the deep growl leave his throat as his hand tightened around your neck.
"You've done it now bitch." he growled. Pulling his knife from his belt he held it up for her to see before he dragged it down her breastbone, leaving a bloody trail and cutting up the front of her shirt.
Gritting your teeth you tried to hold back your cry of pain, your eyes closing tightly. When he stopped the knife at your diaphragm you tried to breath in as much as you could with his hand squeezing your throat.
"If you beg I just might forgive y...AHH!"
Swinging your foot up you kicked him in the groin as hard as you could, taking in a sharp breath when he released his hold on your neck to fall to his knees. Whimpering at the intense agony in your chest from what you assumed was your many broken ribs you looked down at him and grit your teeth. Wrapping your hands around the chains connecting your cuffs to the ceiling you lifted you used all your strength to lift your body up, giving your leg the momentum to land a hard kick to his back. Out of energy you let go and dropped back down to your feet, your toes barely touching the floor as your body swung a little.
Groaning and growling the man pushed himself up from the floor, his balls throbbing along with his middle back. Looking to the omega with fire in his eyes he moved over to grab the wooden cane from the corner.
Seeing him swing the cane through the air you closed your eyes tight and thought of Katakuri.
....................................
Sitting in the office of his mother's old cremate he kept his eyes closed. Marco, Whitebeard's second in command had come into the room a little over an hour ago and showed them that only a small corner of y/n's vivre card was left and still burning away. She was dying and the knowledge made him feel sick to his stomach, like someone was squeezing his heart. Over the past two days both ships had been sailing in the direction her card said she was in and he and her father had spent most of the time talking about her. He had admitted to denying her when she had finally found him, sending her away and threatening to kill her if he ever saw her again. It had taken everything in his power not to attack the man then and there. He knew how much it meant to y/n to find her father, how long she had been looking. There was no doubt she had been crushed by his rejection and he was sure to let the man know as much, not feeling sorry at all for the guilt clouding the huge male's eyes.
"How did you meet her? How did she end up with you Charlottes?" Whitebeard asked the young alpha sitting in the chair with his legs and arms both crossed and his eyes closed.
Sighing slowly he kept his eyes closed as he thought back to that night over twenty years ago. "She found me hiding from slavers in the shed, we got in a fight and she beat me up pretty good. When they came for me she hid me in their house." he wouldn't tell the man that she was the first only person who ever smiled at him, who never belittled him because of his mouth, how she was his only friend. "She somehow convinced her mother to allow us to stay with them until mama came back..."
"You knew Selena?" Whitebeard asked.
"For only a short time. She was already very sick when we came along. She was mostly bedridden and stayed in her room where y/n cared for her." he told the male and saw the man's brow furrow. He had told him how he hadn't known about y/n, how he had thought his mate had been killed.
"How old was she, y/n?"
"Five, almost six."
She was so young, too young to be taking care of her dying mother. It should have been him, he should have been there.
"She passed about a month or so later. When mama came to get us I... we took her with us. We have been together ever since."
Humming he looked down, looking again at the pictures that had been bundled together with the stack of old letters he had written to his dear Selena. Most were aged but he could see his mate in them, along with a little girl, his pup. The first one was of Selena sitting in a bed, she looked tired but a smile was on her face as she held what he assumed was their newborn daughter in her arms. A few others were of Y/n was a baby and small child. His favorite was the picture of his mate and pup sitting in the grass, flowers around them. Selena was sitting back, resting on her hands while what had to be a three or four year old y/n laid in the grass by her legs, a large, carefree smile on her face and her blonde hair, hair she had gotten from him forming a halo around her head. Looking the the last one he saw it was a close up picture of the both of them, only their faces in the picture and y/n's little arms making him think she had taken it. Selena was smiling softly but her eyes looked so tired, so weak. The boy in front of him, Katakuri had said she was sick, she was already dying in this picture. Quickly swallowing the knot in his throat he closed his eyes. The guilt that his omega had been sick and he wasn't there to take care of her weighted heavily on him. Always he felt like a failure for not being there to protect her when he thought she had been killed but to now know she had died slowly while their daughter, a little omega herself was forced to care for her, to take on the responsibility which was his made him feel less than dirt. Opening his mouth to speak he was cut off by a loud knocking on his door.
Snapping his eyes over to the large door he saw Marco throw it open.
"Pops I think we got her. That ship, if I'm not mistaken, I think it's the Reaper Pirates." he told his old man.
Hearing this the massive man quickly stood from the chair and hurried out onto deck, Katakuri right behind him. Looking out in front of them, just on the horizon he saw the black ship with black sails and growled.
"Who are the Reaper Pirates?" Katakuri asked Marco when he heard alpha growl.
"A bunch of horrible people. Slavers, murders, rapist, you name it. They don't care who they hurt so long as they make out in the end. If they've got her then it isn't going to be good." Marco told him honestly. Holding the small bit of paper out for the large male to take.
Taking the paper from Marco he saw it was only as big as his thumb nail now and grit his teeth. Looking back towards the ship that the woman he loves could be on he felt his heart hammer in his chest. Remembering what Nebula had said about an unclaimed omega going for a high price he grit his teeth.
.....................................
You were so cold, your arms were numb from being chained above your head and holding your weight for so long. You wished you could say the rest of your body was numb as well, at least then you wouldn't be in so much pain. Every breath you took felt like your chest was being stabbed with a bunch of needles. Blinking slowly you had to fight to open your eyes, they felt so heavy. How much longer would this last? When would it end? Closing your eyes again you heard what sounded like cannons but you couldn't will your eyes to open anymore. Things were starting to get muffled sounding now, yelling, it sounded like yelling... you were so tired. Sleep. You just wanted to sleep. Sleep and dream. Dream of him.
...................................
He was the first one on the ship, using his devil fruit to fly across to the deck. Using anything he could he started cutting down man after man. Their bullets went through him with no problem, hitting the men behind him. He heard as Whitebeard yelled but he paid him no mind. As soon as he had seen the boxes and crates from Toto land he knew they were the ones that had attacked y/n's ship. Seeing the Captain run out of his cabin he growled at sight of the man adorned with y/n's sword. He gave him no time to attack, throwing his spear through the air and into the man's chest just as he saw his legs change into what looked like those of a frog. Being pinned to the wall he walked over to him and wrapped his hand around the man's throat. "Where is she?" he growled.
"Where's who?" he chuckled, blood staining his lips.
Gritting his teeth he shoved the trident into the man completely and watched him die. Ripping y/n's sword from his side he tossed it to one of his men, "Take it to my cabin." he told him and saw the man nod.
Glancing to the sword Katakuri had handed over he recognized it as Selena's old one and looked to his crew, "Search the ship, find her." he told them. The ship wasn't made for his size, nor that of the Charlotte but the young alpha was quick to duck down and go bellow deck in search of y/n. It angered him to know he couldn't help look for her but the least he could do was make every man on this ship pay.
Hurrying down the stairs he easily killed any person that dared stop him. Looking over every space he saw no sign of her. Squeezing down to the haul of the ship he kicked open doors, looking over storage rooms and such. Getting to the end of the hall he got to a thick wooden door with a bolt lock. Quickly unlocking it he threw open the door and what he saw made him almost fall to his knees and he would have if he hadn't fell tot he door frame instead. Oh God NO! His whole body trembled as he hurried over to her. There was so much blood. She was covered in it, her skin, her clothes, her hair. It was puddled on the floor, staining the wooden boards a dark red. Her clothes were torn, hanging on her small frame only by pieces here and there. Looking down to the sea prism cuffs holding her body up he swallowed hard at the raw, bloody skin under them. Her tiny fingers, the only part of her not smeared in blood were a light blue from holding her weight for so long. Swallowing hard he looked the room over for the keys but didn't see any. Hearing someone behind him he commanded for them to find the keys.
"Y..yes sir..." the person said quickly before scrambling away.
While waiting he gently, his hands shaking reached out to cup her head in his palm, tilting it up so he could look at her. Seeing the deep bruises littering her beautiful face he grit his teeth. Blood ran from her nose and mouth, along with the large cut on her cheek. Her eye was slightly swollen shut as well. At first glance she would almost be unrecognizable. Licking his lips he looked her over, "Y/n? Y/n wake up. Come on sweetheart look at me, open those pretty eyes." he said in a deep low voice.
There was a voice, a soothing deep voice. It was calling to you. Something warm was touching your face and that smell, vanilla and leather. You knew that voice, that smell but it couldn't be him, he couldn't be here. Trying to open your eyes you just couldn't lift your heavy lids, you didn't have the strength, you couldn't even move your lips to say his name.
Her eyes didn't open but he did hear a barely audible whimper leave her busted lips and it sent a aching pain straight to his heart, made something in him come alive.  "I got you sweetheart, you are going to be alright." he said, wither it was to her or himself he didn't know. Hearing boots running towards him he looked back to see the man from his crew standing there with the keys in hand. Snatching them from him he quickly started unlocking the chains around her wrists. Trying to hold her to him and unlock the cuffs he saw as Marco hurried towards him, helping to unlock the cuffs while he held Y/n in his arms. Once her arms were free he felt her entire body fall limp but he was there to catch her. Holding her in the crook of his arm he watched as Marco's hand moved towards her and he growled in warning.
"Calm down Charlotte, I am a doctor." he told the alpha male and heard his growl stop but his noticed his body still tense. Feeling her pulse he knit his brows. "Her pulse if fading, we need to get her back on the ship quickly." he told him.
Without another word he was rushing out of the haul of the ship with her cradled to his chest. As soon as they reached the deck he saw the emperor's eyes shoot to him and then down to the battered omega in his arms, his face contorting into one of pure fear and anger.
"Come on we have to hurry." Marco called already going up the gangplank.
With a nod from Whitebeard he followed the male to the room that was designated for medic. Laying her small body on the large bed he watched as the other male started moving about, grabbing this and that. Seeing a woman come into the room as well and start helping Marco he guessed she was his assistant or a nurse of some sorts. He could only stand there in a frozen state, staring at her near lifeless body. With the lights in the room he could now see more of the damage that littered her body. Her shirt was cut open, almost revealing her breasts. If it would have been under any other circumstance he would be a blushing mess right now but seeing her skin stained red and black he felt nothing but worry.
"She has lost too much blood, she will need a transfusion. Do you know what blood type she is?" Marco asked the male who seemed to be in a state of shock. "Charlotte."
Snapping his eyes to the male he blinked to focus. "Ah yes she... she is XF." With a nod he saw them set up the IV, watching as they cleaned away a part of her arm.
"She's too dehydrated...I can't find a vein."
"I'll have to do a central line." Marco said, moving to grab the things he needed. "I need you to go outside."
Looking to the male he knit his brows, "I am not going an..."
"I can't risk her getting an infection, it will kill her. You are also in the way. You can wait outside and when I know something I will send Nina out to get you."
Looking from the male back to the omega and he took a deep breath. Nodding he took one last look at her before he left the room. Getting outside he saw a few chairs in the small room and took a seat in them. Looking down he saw blood on his hands, arms and chest. Her blood. Closing his eyes he tried to steady his heart. He had swore the day Brulee had gotten hurt that he would get stronger, that he would always be there to protect the people he loved. He hadn't kept true to his word though because the woman he loved deeply was in the other room, on the brink of death and he hadn't been there to help her. Even now he was unable to help her. Clenching his fists he made a promise to never let her get hurt again. Hearing a door open he looked first to the one she was behind and saw it still closed. Glancing left he saw Whitebeard coming through entrance. The large male closed the door behind him before moving to sit in one of the other chairs. Not a word was said, there was nothing to say. All they could do was wait.
........................................
Hours later, long into the night the door to the medical room opened and he snapped his eyes open to see a tired looking Marco walk out, wiping his hands on a towel.
Looking to both men he took a deep breath before starting. "She is stable. I'm not going to sugar coat it, she's in rough shape. She was beat, I'm guessing by that cane that was in the room with her. Her body is littered with cuts and bruises as well as some nasty welts. She has many broken or cracked ribs, as well as her cheekbone. I pulled a bullet out of her shoulder and a few large splinters out of her thigh and hip. I am guessing it has been at least a good week possibly more since she has eaten anything and considering how dehydrated she was I'd probably say they didn't give her any water either. Lastly she has a mild concussion and the ligaments in her shoulders and wrists have been torn from holding her weight for so long. I've healed her the best I can for today, she's too weak for me to do anymore and I don't want to push her but I will do more tomorrow. It will take time but she should make a full recovery."
Letting out a breath he didn't know he was holding he closed his eyes. "Thank you." he said and saw the male give him a small smile and nod. "Can I see her?"
"Sure, just give Nina a moment, she is getting her cleaned up a bit."
Nodding he saw the male go to stand by his captain, the two of them speaking softly. It didn't talk long until the woman came out and he was allowed inside. Walking over to her bedside he looked down at her and closed his eyes, she was covered in bandages. But, she was alive and that was all that mattered. Lifting his hand he brushed her hair back some.
Watching the young alpha with his daughter he took a deep breath. "My daughter, what is she to you?"
"Everything."

Mister Sun
⤷ ficlet
part 1 |  part 2
Tumblr media
Ace x f!reader; romantic
⤷ synopsis: The only way to calm yourself down was by listening to Mister Sun by Barney. Sounds cute right? Don’t be a clown. This is a n g s t.
⤷ word count: 1,6k
⤷ a/n: aHHHHH heres my comeback from my hiatus 😎hope y’all liked it, i was writing when it was 4 AM and i downtripped to lots of sad songs, remembering how good and youthful life was before I became a boring old hag. das all folks, lemme know what u think as always! (((also im trying this new format just for ficlets/og works teehee)))
----
“Oh mister sun, sun, mister golden sun,” Ace cooed as his rough fingers gently combed through your hair, “please shine down on me.” You shift on his lap, clearly still startled from the nightmare, but unwinding as he continues his humming while swaying lightly.
He was so warm against the cold night.
“You feeling better?” His head lulled a bit to the side, his loud yawn permeating the night air. Guilt bloomed in your chest for waking him up in these delicate hours, but you couldn’t help but need comfort. Your late mother always sang Barney’s song to calm you when you were younger, so naturally it was the only way to unravel your nerves, despite it being a child’s song.
“Thanks for doing this, I know it’s not really your style.” You briefly apologized. He waved it off.
“No biggie, anything for my girl.” He grinned, his toothy smile shining against the moonlit sea. Your giggle follows right after, his smiles always made you feel like everything was gonna be okay.
“Love you babe,” you dreamily sigh, still high off broken sleep.
“I know.”
You nestled your head on the meatiest part of his thigh, and fell asleep. When silence pervaded the air, he pulled you tight to him and closed his eyes. The tranquility of the night made you follow suit a bit after.
All things continued well, you went fishing with Ace the next morning, catching a bigger fish than him and bragging about it to Marco.
“Cheater!” Ace kept chanting as he demanded a rematch. “You just got lucky, lemme show you how it’s really done.” Grumbling, you acquiesced to his ramblings and hooked on bait.
“Ho,ho. You’re going down, lover boy.” You bore your sole into the wood of the deck, readying yourself for battle.
“Ready!” He counted down, “Set! Go!”
Fishing lines cast into the sea, a brief moment passing by before a fish tugs on your line first. Messily reeling it in, your feet trip over themselves, cursing as the rod slipped through your sweaty grip. Meanwhile, Ace grunted as he fought against his big catch before victoriously reeling it in. As much as you hate admitting it, you lost.
“Yeah!!” Ace rejoiced, admiring his fish, “we’re eating good tonight boys! Fire up the grills!” The resounding cheers of the crew followed after.
Moments like these, seeing everyone, especially Marco, merrily hammered with booze and seeing Ace mingling with the crowd, occasionally falling asleep, yet his smile never fading. It was moments like these that you wished never left because eventually everything becomes a distant memory.
As a little girl, you believed nightmares disappear after mom sings you to sleep. As an adult, you realized nightmares are never really gone; instead it slowly builds itself in a steady, continuous stream until it becomes real.
It became hell.
The marines took Ace.
Whitebeard rampaged.
And one thing leads to the other, you find yourself alongside his little brother on the battlefield. Ace looked disparaged sitting atop of the execution platform, protected by the best of the best.
“Ace!” With a determined look raging through his pupils, he grit his teeth and dug his fingernails through the log he was carrying, “We’ll save you! Y/n and I, we’ll save you!” His promise rang throughout the battlefield, commencing the beginning of the end.
The battle ensues, one thing leads to another and Ace is free, running towards freedom.
Until Akainu provokes him.
“Ha, the loser from the dead generation finally met his time.” The magma man inched closer as the flames flickered off of Ace’s body, angry.
“Take that back.” Ace growled, his white-knuckled fist engulfed in his flames.
Akainu snickered. “In other words, he’s an eternal loser who will never surpass Roger. Making all his underlings call him ‘old man’ and ‘father’ or whatever.... he got stabbed because his stupid ‘sons’ believed every word he said.”
“The old man gave us a place where we belong,” Ace lunged forward, fist in front, swallowed with rage, “don’t make fun of the old man who saved my life!”
He dodged gracefully, turning on his heel to jab Ace in the rib. They exchange punches, the belligerent admiral having the upper hand due to Ace’s lagging and recklessness. Akainu’s eyes shifted from the fire fist to the strawhat.
Perfect, he thought, time to end this.
He leaped in the air towards Luffy, the magma on his fist leaving a trail behind him and a smile as wide as ever. He won.
His fist never connected with the strawhat.
It bore a hole through Ace instead.
Even better.
Overwhelming dread filled the battlefield, especially in Luffy’s unwavering faith, because holy shit you’re not supposed to see right through him. “Ace!” Marco called from the other side, soaring to his side while everyone froze in fear as they watched the events unfold. Whitebeard can only watch in lament, knowing that he did all that he could and it still wasn’t enough. Luffy promised to save him, but why does it feel like he’s the one Ace saved?
He was there, within your reach. Why couldn’t you do anything? Why didn’t you do anything?
How could you let him die? Out of all the things you could’ve done for him, you cried.
Pathetic.
He was right there.
You rushed into the rumbling battleground, skidding against the concrete to plant yourself next to him. Luffy’s head whipped to you, holding Ace in his shaking arms. “Y-y/n,” Luffy trembled, and the look in his eyes said it all. He’s dying.
Ace exchanged a few incoherent words with Luffy, so melancholic that he went into shock, mouth agape as his eyes rolled back into his skull.
Swapping places with Luffy, you held Ace’s head on your lap. “Hey, don’t cry,” he brushed the hair clinging to your wet face, “don’t make that face. Doesn’t look like you.” He joked as you pulled him closer to your chest with your foreheads touching and hands shaking as it was on either side of his cheeks, screaming in frustration as tears stained the ground and shamelessly dripped over his face. The warm air contrasted with the coldness of Ace’s body.
“You’re gonna be fine,” your eyes scanned for a doctor, “you’re gonna live, you’ll be fine!” You called out to the nearest medic, asking them to save him.
“I’m sorry ma’am, it’s already too late, not much to do!”
“Bullshit! You’re a fucking doctor right? What kind of a doctor can’t even save a man dying in front of him?”
Scared, the poor doctor frantically skirted away, while Ace stared into your orbs, admiring them one last time. “No need to be upset,” he nuzzled his cheek against your thigh, “he can’t save me. Nobody can. My insides are fried.”
“Don’t talk like that!” If he wasn’t injured, you would’ve slapped the living shit out of him. “You’re not dying. I refuse. Get up.”
“It’s no use.”
You heave up his weight, slinging his arm over your shoulder, only to come crashing back down. The others watched in pity because all you can do was repeatedly punch the ground in dismay like a child throwing a tantrum.
“You can make it!”
“Y/n.”
“Luffy promised we’d save you and I intend to keep my word.”
“Y/n.”
While watching you trying to save him in vain, unconscious tears wet his cheeks as he bit his lip. It broke his soul to know that he has to leave you like this and there’s nothing he can do to help you. He wants to live. For you. But he knows better than to dream, especially in the condition he’s in. He haphazardly tapped your face with the fading strength he had.
“Y/n, calm down. I’ll be fine. Please don’t cry. Listen to me, yeah?”
You nodded, knowing it was a lie, but acquiescing to hear your lover.
“God, I’m so tired Y/n.” He took a shallow breath before continuing, “I wanna sleep but I don’t wanna go.” I don’t want to leave you alone, hangs on his lips.
This was the end of the line. You knew it was. His stagnant breaths told you so.
All of your movements stop, frustration replaced with empty acceptance. Ace can’t remember you like this, you thought, it’d only be harder for him. “Go ahead,” you manage to show him a forced smile, contrasting against your red nose and puffy eyes, telling him it’s okay. It’s okay to go. He was not nearly convinced, but it was getting harder to fight the sleep overwhelming his crisp body.
“Go sleep,” you encouraged once more, “I’ll be here for you, waiting for you.” You choked on the words as his smile relaxed, eyes fluttering shut.
“Love you, y/n.”
“I know.”
“Thank you for loving me.”
Clenching your fists, you bit the insides of your cheeks, hoping to drown out the deafening world. Everyone was screaming, but your heart screamed louder. Don’t go, your heart pleaded, I need you. Please don’t leave me.
But you knew better, Ace would’ve wanted to know that you’d be okay without him. You had to be strong. For him.
This is all that I can do for him.
Before all life left his body, you sang to him one last time, hoping it would provide him as much comfort as it did for you.
“Oh mister sun, sun, mister golden sun. Please shine down on me.”
The wind gushed by, taking his last breath with it. The end of the beginning was concluding, clearing a new path for a new era in its place. The war raged, filled with metal clashing and the wailing of crestfallen loved ones.
His vivre card burned, crumbling into thin air, as if it never existed.
Please wake me up from this nightmare.

Myriad Misadventures - Chapter 34
With Sapphire/Ruby gone, life is different. Quieter. Not in a particularly good or bad way, just...different.
You miss her. You miss her so, so much, and if it weren’t for the fact that (based on her letters) she is living a fabulous and very safe new life back home, reunited with her sister and no longer harassed by her bigoted parents, you’d be begging her in writing to come back. Hell, if you could leave the palace, you would go to her door and beg her in person. Irina, Rhea, and Rosa are nice (well, Rosa is slightly less antagonistic than before, you suppose), but none of them have quite the same joie de vivre.
Adding to the list of things perpetually on your mind is this: half the girls are gone now. Which means that half of the girls are left, and the fact remains that you are one of them. It fills you with pride as much as it confuses you. And boy, does it confuse you. You at least expect the pace to pick up though, now that you’re down to the last four.
But just like that...it’s as though time comes to a stop, because nothing happens. For months.
To be clear, you’re still expected to attend classes and dinner, and go to whatever ridiculous themed ball Lady Amara can cook up next. You write and play music and talk with the other girls in your free time, you talk with Loki, you ride horses and go on picnics and read through a solid portion of the library. Your birthday comes and goes, with - to your relief - no real pomp and circumstance to celebrate it. You can name all of the world’s countries in alphabetical order on command, you know how to settle various political disputes at the drop of a hat, and you’re as well-educated in matters of etiquette as any teenager could possibly be.
But that’s it. Nobody else is dismissed from the palace, including you. It’s been just about a year since five became four, and, as far as you can tell, none of the other girls have made any more romantic progress with His-Royal-Slowness than you have (though they probably have, considering you’ve only gotten as far as admitting to yourself that you wouldn’t mind being his friend).
Which leaves you...where?
***********************************************
Dear Mom, Dad, Carlie, and Erik,
I miss you.
You sigh, and cross it out. It’s the holidays, dumbass. Maybe start out on a slightly happier note, yeah?
Now, let’s try again.
Happy holidays! Thank you for the card - it was funny to be on the receiving end! Carlie, remember how much we’d complain about having to smile until Mom said we’d gotten the perfect picture? Remember how much our cheeks hurt? I know it sounds crazy, but I miss that now, too! I’m having fun here, but I wish I could see you guys this winter.
“What are you writing?”
You flinch - out of surprise, not fear - and bend your head back to look at the black-and-green-clad dork standing behind your seat on the couch. “It’s a letter, to my family. I got a Christmas card from them a few days ago, and I figured I might as well say thanks,” you explain. He walks around and settles into a nearby chair, and you cock your head at him. “You haven’t been around much the last few days. Everything ok?”
“What’s a Christmas card?”
Way to deliberately avoid my question… He looks too exhausted for you to call him out on it, though, so you play along. “Here.” You pull out the rectangle of paper, glossy on one side, with a picture of your parents and siblings grinning in front of the house. You can tell by the shovel propped against the stoop that they had just finished shoveling snow out of the sidewalk, and from the slightly-too-big smiles that Mom had probably forced them to get the picture before she’d let them go inside. “It’s a holiday tradition. Lots of Earth families do them. They don’t have to be for Christmas, either. It’s an easy way to let people know you’re thinking about them, in case you don’t get to see them during the holidays. They sent me one last year, too.” You feel your smile fade slightly as you give the picture another once-over. Carlie’s shooting up like a weed, her previously gap-toothed smile beginning to fill in. She’s almost ten, now, you realize. Erik is looking more like Dad every day, you’re sure, and your parents seem a little...wilted. Less genuinely happy than you remember them.
“You miss them.” It’s not a question. Even the guy who claimed Earth as his new kingdom is observant enough to realize that taking a young woman away from her family for two years isn’t the kindest thing to do.
“Yeah.” You shrug, tucking the card back under your journal. “My baby sister’s getting older. It’s weird, not being there to see it. And it’s even weirder that I’m almost a legal adult, and I haven’t seen any of them in person since I was sixteen.”
When you look back up at him, he’s staring at you with...remorse, you think. “I’m very sorry.”
“Not enough to let me go,” you joke. Or, it’s meant to come out as a joke, but had more of a sting than you’d anticipated. “Sorry, I mean - ”
“No need to apologize. Being separated from your family is difficult.” He goes quiet for a moment. “I imagine the other ladies feel the same way.”
“Probably.”
“You asked me last year if I would release you, and I said no.”
“Loki - ”
“Don’t. Please.” He presses a hand to his mouth, shakes his head, and speaks again. “You are free to leave whenever you wish.”
What?
You hear a soft scattering of papers as the writing materials slide off your lap. He’s down on the ground before you have a chance to even move, gathering the papers together and straightening them out again. “You would do that for me?”
He places the small stack of papers on the couch next to you, and, still kneeling, grabs your hands gently. “(Y/N), you gave me your friendship and I repaid you by keeping you trapped here.”
“I’m not trapped - I mean, I want to see my family, I just...”
The kneeling has you more flustered than usual, and you can’t quite figure out why. But you take a deep breath, look him in the eyes, and finally, finally find the words to ask him what you’re really thinking:
“Do you want me to leave?”

(purupurupuru) (purupurupuru) (gocha!) (coo!) (coo!)
Happy Fall Monday, minna-san! Summer is over so it’s back to school and work, but fret not. Fall season will be filled with fun stuff so w/o further ado, let’s get down to business. First off, last week’s chapter is increasing the situation into worse. Urashima was in shocked and angry to have his top knot cut off by Okiku that it got him into rage mode of wanting to kill her. However, Luffy steps in and challenges him. Luffy was avoiding all his attack so easily. Meanwhile, poor Tama is getting her cheeks pulled so hard with a pliers by the jerk Holden to see if her cheeks do produce dango. Poor Tama could only cry for Luffy’s help. On the other side, Hawkins is heading to Bakura town to resolve the situation of Luffy and the others. Just when things are bad, Law was about to head out to stop the guys, but poor Bepo collapsed b/c he ate the fish from the poisoned water which is bounding Law to either stop the guys or tend poor Bepo. Finally back in town, Luffy unleased his ultimate sumo move and sent Urashima flying across town. BAM! All the onlookers were so shocked to see that he was defeated. With that, Holdem’s goons start attacking Luffy and the others, but they were easily defeated. At the end, Luffy screamed for Holdem to show up, and that he did. He has poor Tama captured in the jaws of the lion in his stomach threatening that it will crush her should he make any attempt to fight back. The situation is getting more intense. Hawkins is closely approaching, and Law is against the wall. What is the outcome of it? Guess we’ll find next week. Yes, this week, no chapter so it’s another break, but be patient. Next, this past weekend’s episode, things are looking up and down at the same time. Sanji and the girls finally reached Chocolat Town, but before they arrive, Pudding chained up Chiffon to deceive the town thinking that she is forcing her to help knowing that she is married to Bege while Sanji is hiding in Labian, the talking carpet. The 31 chefs of WCI has gathered ready to bake the cake and Sanji got a head start of providing the exact recipe to make the cake. Everyone is ready, and they have two hours to prepare it. Meanwhile, Luffy is giving his all to beat Katakuri, but this man keeps knocking him down. He then tells Brulee to go burn Sunnny and the others. At the end, she and her siblings found the mirror that leads to Sunny ready to send burning arrows. Next time, the gang is still being chased by Big Mom, and a huge tidal wave is making their problems worse. Will they survive? Don’t miss it this weekend. Now on with the goods! FIGURINES! FIGURINES! Father’s Day reflections
Tumblr media
As the years roll by, I realize more and more how much like my father I really am. I see his image in me in so many things I do and say, even how I say them. Father’s Day has given me pause to think about Ferdinand Yonke and how I carry his DNA into the future, as do my children and grandchildren.
We had many wonderful times together, my Dad and me. And some tough times as well. He was a brilliant man who never had the ambition -- or maybe not the opportunities -- to take full advantage of his intelligence. He grew up during the Great Depression of the late ‘20s and early ‘30s and had to drop out of school to help his family. He enlisted in the Army at the start of World War II and landed in the first wave of Allied troops on the Normandy beaches. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He spent a year after the war in Prague, helping Czechoslovakia recover from the devastation of WWII.
After the war he returned to Brooklyn, married my Mom in 1946 and started a family the next year. He learned a skilled trade -- TV repair -- that paid the bills and fed a family of 8 (2 parents, five boys and one girl).
My Dad taught me to play chess and we loved playing board games, word games and Strat-O-Matic baseball. He and Mom loved to sing and dance to the music of the Big Bands and especially Frank Sinatra. Dad had an irrepressible joie de vivre that he passed along to me and all his children.
He always encouraged me, in sports and academics and in life. Ferdy lived a long and happy life, passing away at age 83. He had continued to drink and smoke, reasoning that all his friends who quit smoking had died so why should he quit?
Personally, I consider my role as father as one of the greatest privileges I could ever had. Also the greatest responsibility. I devoted all the time and energy I could to helping my three daughters become well-balanced, well-rounded, fun and conscientious girls and now women. I shared my faith with them but felt my actions spoke louder than words. I’m proud of them and how they’ve “turned out” and if you ask me what my greatest accomplishment is, I would say it was raising three wonderful daughters.
I used to resent “Hallmark holidays” like Father’s Day and Mother’s Day, thinking they were just an excuse for greeting card companies and florists to make money. And there’s some truth to that. But if you have the right perspective, these can be special days when you count your blessings and pay tribute to the people who were (and continue to be) the greatest influences in our lives.
Nobody can ever fill the shoes of your father and mother. In these tumultuous, tenuous, polarized times, I’m grateful for the love and security I enjoyed growing up in “my own little world” with a wonderful, loving, caring and FUN family.
Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there. Keep up the great work. You are making a difference.

The Vow - What Could Have Been
So prior to the release of 850 I was had started to come around on Pudding (as a lot of us did) and I started work on The Vow, which would have featured some actual Sanji x Pudding (as opposed to the toxic marriage depicted in Knotted). Note that BOTH of my betas had been asking about this for a while and 848 briefly opened the door for me being able to write that story. I’ve basically abandoned the project, but I did write some scenes and had a working outline, more or less, for what I wanted to do.
And since there seems to be a genre of Tumblr posts for AUs that might never get written, here’s my first foray into this type of post.
So the key difference in this AU (other than Pudding not being a massive piece of shit) is that the Vinsmokes and Big Mom decided on the marriage several years earlier, figuring that it might take Germa Kingdom a while to hunt down their lost prince. Instead they find him when he’s still and working at the Baratie, about two and a half years before Luffy sets off on his journey to become Pirate King (yes this would be about the same time Ace set off on his journey, no it’s not relevant to what I had planned). Anyways, whoever finds Sanji basically threatens him with the safety of Zeff and the Baratie to convince him to leave with them. It takes them a while to get Sanji to WCI (because, well, distance and such) but not enough time for him and Pudding to be of legal age to marry, so they end up meeting at seventeen and having a year to get to know each other before their wedding.
Pudding, for her part, is not happy about the engagement. She didn’t think it would even come up until she turned eighteen and she’s met the Vinsmokes before and assumes Sanji is going to be the same. Then she finds his brothers casually kicking the shit out of him and starts to realize that maybe her fiance isn’t so bad after all. They each have a confession to make (Sanji talks about his upbringing, Pudding reveals her third eye to him) and over the course of the year start to fall in love and develop a relationship. Key moments during that year would have included:
- Sanji would have given Pudding a locket for Christmas that year. This ends up being her most prized possession later in the story for reasons that are expanded upon later.
- They end up sleeping together a month before the wedding in order to take control of one aspect of their marriage that Big Mom has no say in and continue to do so behind everyone’s backs. Part of this was tied into Pudding having a sort of “complex” about the value of her virginity.
The wedding goes off without a hitch and the pair honeymoon in Dressrosa because it’s like, the only relevant island on that half of the Grand Line. They decide they want to make the most of their life together, probably including a search for the All Blue and some sort of dream for Pudding to chase that I never figured out before OH LOOK SHE’S EVIL. Anyways when they get back from the honeymoon Big Mom tells them that, on Judge’s request, they’re going to live in Germa Kingdom, and since neither of them thinks Big Mom will listen to how bad of an idea this is they end up spending the next 5-6 months in Germa Kingdom, where shit is bad.
The couple decide to escape, but they get separated in this escape attempt and Pudding is pretty sure that Sanji was killed. Deep in mourning, Pudding gets a job on a passenger ship. She keeps her wedding ring in the locket, partly because she doesn’t think she’s married anymore and partly because they make this really cheesy promise that anytime they take off their rings their partner needs to put it back on, meaning with Sanji absent Pudding won’t put her ring on. Eventually she ends up in the East Blue and decides to look for the Baratie to make sure her husband’s childhood home is safe.
Pudding succeeds at finding the Baratie but Zeff won’t give her a job in the kitchen but offers her a job as a waitress. This goes on for a while, with Pudding trying and failing to get a job as a cook and occasionally sneaking into Sanji’s old room to sleep, since it still smells like him. She doesn’t tell Zeff about her relationship to Sanji, but she’s well aware that Zeff is very worried about him.
One day, Pudding is told to procure a specific wine for a Marine officer trying to impress his date. While in the wine cellar, she hears a loud crashing sound, like someone fired a canon at the restaurant. Everyone should know EXACTLY where this is going and EXACTLY where the next part of the story is headed.
So needless to say we’re now in the Baratie arc sans Sanji but with Pudding. Luffy probably offers Pudding a spot on his crew, seeing as she wants to be a cook for the Baratie but Zeff won’t let her and Luffy needs a cook for his pirate crew. Pudding probably declines, though likely not as firmly as Sanji did. Luffy and the other Straw Hats learn that Zeff had a foster son who left under strange circumstances a few years earlier but don’t learn much about him. Then we have the whole Don Krief and Nami stealing the ship business and blah blah blah fight scene blah blah blah Pudding would have showed off some sort of fighting technique blah blah good bye Don Krieg.
Before Pudding accepts Luffy’s offer (because of course she is in this scenario) she and Zeff have a talk and Zeff reveals he’s aware she’s been sneaking into Sanji’s room at night. Pudding doesn’t reveal everything to Zeff, like who Sanji is and who she is, but she says he was taken away for a political marriage she’s his wife. She explains they were separated and she doesn’t think he’s okay.
Zeff reveals that he knows Sanji is alive as he had a vivre card made sometime after he left. Unfortunately the hair sample he found was too old and while it can tell whether or not Sanji is alive it won’t act as a compass like a normal vivre card will (because plot reasons). Pudding takes a piece of the card and keeps it in the locket with her wedding ring.
And so goes most of the completed arcs of One Piece with Pudding at the Straw Hat’s chef, right up through Zou, where she is taken by the Big Mom Pirates who are intent on bringing her home. It’s possible the group divisions are different, with Robin heading to Zou with that group instead of staying in Dressrosa while someone else stays behind. While this is going on, Luffy and co. are en route to Zou after finishing up business in Dressrosa and get into a scuffle with a group of bounty hunters, one of whom goes toe-to-toe with Zoro and primarily uses kicks.
The Straw Hats most likely don’t know who she is (Nami MIGHT depending on how things played out with Lola on Thriller Bark) and are afraid that Pudding is going to be married into the Big Mom Pirates. The Straw Hats go as a group to rescue her (seeing as her kidnapping was more hostile than Sanji’s). While en route to WCI, they are attacked by the bounty hunters again. Robin and Nami figure out the kicking guy won’t hurt women and they’re able to capture him. The other bounty hunters leave their companion behind - the Straw Hats feel bad but don’t let him go either. He’s kept tied up in the kitchen while they discuss Pudding’s predicament and if anyone hasn’t figured out the bounty hunter is Sanji by now I am disappointed in you. Sanji claims to know Pudding and that he’s her husband and he’s been looking for her for the last three years, bounty hunting to make ends meet while looking for her, and is able to prove it by use of information Pudding told Robin and Nami during some, eh hem, “girl talk”.
Ultimately Pudding is rescued and Sanji stays with the Straw Hats, giving Luffy two cooks and they all set sail for further adventures.
So yeah that’s what The Vow would have been about but since Pudding is a horrible shit monster I’ll probably never finish it.

One Piece, Vol. 84
By Eiichiro Oda. Released in Japan by Shueisha, serialization ongoing in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump. Released in North America by Viz. Translated by Stephen Paul.
I’ve talked before about the pacing of One Piece vs. many of the other Jump titles we’ve seen over the years. One Piece packs so much into each chapter it’s as if these 84 volumes have really been 168. Bleach, on the other hand, could probably come in under 50 if you sped things up to a normal scale. It’s also one reason why I feel the need to give each new volume a full review rather than a Bookshelf Brief. Even when a volume is mostly a bunch of fights, even when it’s mired in an arc I thought went on too long like Dressrora, even when Oda is doing things I’m not a fan of… it’s still one of the best shonen manga out there, and there’s still a lot to talk about. Let’s start with Sanji, as this is in many ways his arc.
I’ve possibly mentioned before that while I love all the Straw Hats, I love Sanji perhaps the least most. This has always made me feel a bit guilty, and therefore I am pleased as punch that we get this volume, showing off his best qualities, revealing more of his horrific childhood, and keeping his bonkers libido in check, even when he’s around a hot girl who’s ready to be his wife. It’s never easy being the unfavorite son, and of all the family it’s no surprise that I’m most interested in Reiju, who actually has empathy but goes along with her family’s wishes anyway. She seems the sort who will either change her loyalties later on or get killed. It’s also interesting to see the Vinsmokes appear to be genetically engineered superhumans, and that Sanji, who has merely normal abilities (for One Piece), is seen as a failure. (I was less pleased with Sanji’s brief “don’t hit women” flashback, which seemed tacked on – I suspect too many fans wanted to know why.)
Sanji is also determined to make sure the rest of the Straw Hats aren’t wiped out by Big Mom, enough to break things off with Luffy. He should know better than anyone that this won’t work, and all it gets him is Nami belting him across the chops. That said, in more important revelations, we see Luffy so full it’s hard for him to eat, something I didn’t think possible, and it actually takes his rubber body a while to slim back down. I’d assumed that he and Nami might have an in to the wedding due to Lola’s vivre card – sadly, a) Lola is persona non grata with Big Mom right now, and b) everyone thinks Nami killed Lola to get it, which is what they would have done. So they end up captured, though that doesn’t last long – I do wonder what’s going on with Charlotte Pudding, who seems far too good to be true.
And there’s also Chopper and Carrot’s mirror adventures, which are mostly comedy, and the revelations about Pedro. As I said, there’s just a LOT going on in each volume of One Piece, and most of them also make you want to go back and check previous volumes to find the hints Oda put in them eight years prior. Even after all these years, this should still be on everyone’s reading list.

Round 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut
Jewelry Bonney (Bonney Pirates)
— Only woman in the Supernovas, one of the very few women captains we've seen, pink hair, rude, uncontrollable
— Manga spoilers but she's been through a lot!! The government forced her to become a pirate and she's doing her best!!!
— Girl with best appetite, beautiful and strong with trauma 👍
— I haven't actually caught up to where we really get to see her but she seemed neat in Sabaody and is named after one of my favorite irl pirates
