tell me about your HON rewrite

Uhhh, this is so much longer that i was expecting it to be and not cohesive.

some pretext about what happens before Zoey shows up. Nerefet is the big bad of the series. rather than being this major powerhouse that everyone is in awe of, she's this overzealous social climber that was banished from high vampire society and is slowly building up power to take everyone down and take what she considers her true place, the ruler of all vampires.

Aphrodite was her most recent pet project after the last one died on her.

Aphrodite was a major vampire nerd before being turned into, a menace in every vampire forum, studying everything publicly known about vampire culture, you get the picture. but it worked out.; in vampire society, she has been making a name for herself.

The important thing here is that Nererfet only cares about being the most powerful and at the start of the rewrite that's vampires. once she discovers something better, she will sell out the entire vampire race to get something greater. Aphrodite actually cares a lot about vampires and vampire society. and once she figures out nerefet isn't as devoted she wants to annihilate her for that

zoey is the perfect replacement.

zoey is fucking dumbass; she's sorta a heather duke/Starscream; always been kept mostly in check by a queen bee (her mom, her older sister, and her friend Kayla) is constantly trying to be the head bitch but the second she gets a bit of power, she can't handle it. so in this zoey's not so much mary sue, she is just not considered a threat compared to other characters so she gets to glide by while in house of night. she will not let go of any sort of power for love or money and will take everyone down with her.

so we have; gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss: vampire edition, and these three are the most powerful spirit users in centuries.

everyone else in vampire society: why tf are we stuck with them?

other than these three let's talk about zoey's friends.

stevie rae is the most reluctant about becoming vampire; of all the nerd herd she is the most put together before being turned; meaning she'll be the one going through it the most. she's desperately holding on to her humanity.

the twins, their gimmick was paper thin, made no sense, and fucking stupid, so now they're actual twins with Erin being albino. Erin is not part of the herd; she's part of Aphrodite's crew here. she's been alienated most of her life from her albinism, kids are cruel and she's always got called a vampire; it got worse in high school. so when the opportunity to be a creature of the night came up she jumped on it.

Shaunee's been told to look out for her sister for as long as she can remember and being her sister's keeper has colored a lot her personality. the second most reluctant to become a vampire; at the start, she and her sister aren't talking. no one knows that they're twins, just that they got to the school at the same time.

Damien......I don't know. his personality was basically gay™ and the only one who studied for the SATs. here's the tentative plan for Damien; since this takes place during '07 he would have gotten bitten to escape his homophobic parents and maybe he got the idea to be bitten by an online friend/boyfriend.

I'm struggling to figure out how to remove zoey's Cherokee background/ magic; mostly it doesn't make sense, I believe it used to just add a mystical element into the series and I do not feel comfortable touching that.

a little expansion on my part: in the original, there were humans, vampyres, red vampyres, and oc gods, and gods.

in this: vampires, ghouls, damphirs, vampire hunters, and humans, maybe some others.

Stevie Rae still dies in book 2. Book 3, no wait. lemme explain the timeline.

the series og timeline fucking stupid, semi takes place in real-time of the 7 years (2007-2014) that the first books were being published then another 6 books from the end of the original books to the start of the spin-off.

but by the time series is over everyone is about 17. Zoey was 17 for 9 years. I know I really should give a damn about the timeline but that does mean that every single thing that happens in the course of the series happens in a little over a year. and that does bother me.

In this version, book one takes place over the course of 3 months from 10/31 to 12/24, Zoey's birthday

book two is from March to June. etc.

Zoey in og was 16➡17, so she was a sophomore. in this, she's 15➡16, and is the youngest of the group, so her awful self entitled attitude makes more sense.

aphrodite and Erik are 17 so they will be full vampires soon.

oh like I said, Stevie rae still dies but her spirit is still around. Zoey gets attacked by her ghoul self and accidentally fuses stevie rae's spirit and body together and makes her into a damphir. stevie are runs away in the chaos and later we find out not only can she walk in the sun but she has spirit powers in addition to her earth powers and has been turning ghouls into damphirs. they're the same group as the red vampyres. this includes Kramisha, nerefet's former pet project.

she still has the gift of prophecy but not bad poetry. Aphrodite still has her visions. kramisha's gift is limited in information but focused on a target while Aphrodite's vision is overloaded with information but happens randomly.

There's more but this has been sitting in my drafts for months and maybe I'll get more ideas to do something with this

Episode 24: “May All Blessings Find Their Way to You, I’m Wishing It”

They’re planning to fire, again? The more this drags out, the harder it will be to cover up.

I see Guel is riding shotgun with Felsi. That said, that definitely would not be very safe during a real firefight.

Is Suletta reaching her limits, now of all times? Well, it does seem to early for that so she’ll probably be fine.

Aaaaand, I just watched the rest at once without taking notes, so prepare for everything to be out of order and me forgetting things

Let’s see, Suletta and Aerial were brought in, and Suletta did eventually wake up on her own. She hadn’t quite reached her limits yet but she was definitely in the red.

Although they successfully shut down Quiet Zero, everyone else got themselves captured in the meantime. Martin, did you even do anything?!

You got to admit, that was a pretty good line from Miorine, and dead on. Taking hostages is unnecessary, Suletta will show up on her own anyway.

If I’m not mistaken, Suletta has previously chastised herself for being too greedy, but now she’s owning it. Girl knows what she wants and she’s going to make it happen.

We’ve been waiting, for this entire series, for this very moment, when Suletta stands up to her mother and openly defies her.

This is the point where shit gets a little weird. I did not much care for Number 4 and certainly wasn’t expecting his return, especially now of all times. Apparently everyone who has used the Gundams exists in the datastorm, not just Eri. Which means they were the ones who interfered last episode, and it explains how Eri knew who it was without anyone else appearing to be around.

This is the point where weird turns into awesome. We’ve seen Aerial go from red to blue to white, and now we have the Calibarn go full rainbow.

Threaten her all you won’t, Miorine doesn’t give a fuck.

So this is Miorine’s Plan B. Dissolving the Benerit Group, selling the assets to Earth like Shaddiq planned, and exposing his criminal ties to the Space Assembly League.

There is something so satisfying about seeing the Peil CEOs realise they’ve lost everything and the cherry on top being Elan quitting on them and taking a better offer. I suppose he never really did anything wrong, and he probably wasn’t to keen on having several other people walking around with his face.

The desperate, last ditch gambit of a man who is unwilling to admit he has already lost. This never works and usually is the point where hero starts to flex and show how much more badass they actually are.

Now she’s controlling other Gundams now and using them to amplify the power of the datastorm. Since everything runs on Permit, even Doomsday weapons, that’s all Suletta needs.

No. 5 gets to see Norea one last time.

Meanwhile Prospera has one last talk with all the people she needs to hear from most, the family she lost and the family she still has left.

And now everything is turning into space dust for some reason. To be fair, both Quiet Zero and Gundams are very dangerous and would only ever be used for one thing, so it’s probably for the best. That said, one of them is Suletta’s current ride, so it is a bit inconvenient for her.

I didn’t know those keychains had any sort of practical function.

The silence was a bit eerie while it lasted but I wasn’t too worried. This scene was clearly a callback to their first meeting, complete with a headbutt.

Three years later…. Nika was released from prison. What a way to kick off this epilogue. Nice haircut.

Petra is better and working for Gund-Arm Inc. and her dumbass boyfriend didn’t get killed.

Guel is working with two of the sassiest people in space. Pray for him. Or not.

Seems Shaddiq took the fall in order to expose the SAL, and Miorine, the girlboss that she is, stole his harem.

The matching keychains that Miorine apparently brings around everywhere are now her sisters-in-law. Figure that one out.

Judging from the conversation, despite going through physical therapy to regain the use of her body, Suletta has already built her school on Mercury, and plans to build another on Earth. Impressive. She also seems to be settling down on Earth with her new wife, her mother and her keychain sisters. Good for her. She moved forward and gained a lot more than two.

All around, happy ending. Almost no one of importance died, and if they did, they apparently ascended to a higher form of existence, or something like that.

More importantly, we the gays win again. Sure, we didn’t get a kiss, but it’s not like there’s any ambiguity here.

set in the same world as throttled, collided follws sophie mitchell, daughter of bandini team principal james mitchell as she spends the summer on the road with the team, and finds her way into the arms of german mccoy driver liam zander ( who is literally the PERFECT man, like he hits every single point on my trifecta: he’s german, he drives a formula one car and he reads books ). liam is mccoy’s resident bad boy, and his pr team has him on a dating ban after he sleeps with the team principals niece. sophie has a naughty ( vvv spicy ) bucket list, and liam offers to help her out, falling hopelesley in love along the way.

thunderstruck - roxanne st.clair ( harlequin nascar )

shelby jackson is the co-owner of the last family owner team in the nascar nextel cup series. sadly, thunder racing is in a terrible financial position and they haven't won anything in years. something that british soccer player mick churchill wants to change when he offers to by the other half of the team. shelby is unimpressed, and keeps trying to push mick out of the business, ultimately falling in love with him in the process. shelby is a girlboss, who commands attention everywhere she goes. mick is a dumbass, match made in heaven. the cover on this one SUCKS but the book is pretty good for being written in 2007, however it lacks any sexy time scenes, as the scenes always cut before there is any real smut.

flash and bones - kathy reiches ( temperance brennan / bones #14 )

rating: 4.5 stars

a dead body is found in an oil drum in the waste processing facility behind the charlotte motor speedway ahead of nascar race week. forensic anthropologist temperance brennan lands the case, and begins looking into the disappearance of a seventeen year old girl and her older boyfriend twelve years prior at the behest of a nascar mechanic related to one of the missing. from there, it’s a rich mystery and vast conspiracy involving militia groups, the fbi, biotoxins and car racing. listen, i was already in love with detective andrew ryan from the other temperance brennan books, but to find out that he is a jacques villeneuve fan, i am swooning.

this book broke me, i'm not even kidding. this book is forced proximity and enemies to lovers between driver jax kingston and elena gonzalez, his media rep. they both have torubled pasts, and i f i could just warp them both in bubble wrap and protect then from the rowld, i would. jax is dangerously self-destructive, and elena has a hard time letting people in, but once they break down their walls (and god does it take a while) they are truly made for each other.

yes i cried like a baby, no i will not elaborate.

taming zach - amy sparling ( team loco #1 )

rating: 3 stars even.

cute, wholesome but predicatable and a little lame. this book follows motocross racer zach pena who has lost his focus on the sport and this also lost his place at the summer classic. as he risks getting cut from the team, he heads back home to hopewell, where he falls in love with bree grayson, the daughter of the groundskeeper ath hopewell motocross park. it's calssic good girl-bad boy shit, and it's been done many times before. although it can get steamy, there's no smut.

currently undecided if im actually going to finish the series.

redeemed - lauren asher ( dirty air #4 )*

santaigo motherfucking alatorre. santaigo is recovering from a crash at silverstone three years ago that resulted in the loss of his right leg. since the crash, he's sequestered himself inside his mansion on lake como and hidden himself away from the world. chole carter never knew who her father was. after her roomate buys her a drugstore dna kit, she finally has her father's identity and finds herself on a trip to lake como to find him.

what i really liked about this one was that as they fell in love with each other, they also learned how to love themselves more in the process.

the final ranking order i have for the dirty air series (and men) is as follows: 1. Redeemed (Santi), 2. Wrecked (Jax), 3. Collided (Liam), 4. Throttled (Noah).

well, this is it. last good gwen comic for a while.

real dumbass move on marvel's part to make the giant size release a week in advance. with it all in sequence though giant size is a lot better.

em jay's symbiote being still present is clearly set up.

... but there isn't any lead-in to emjarnage being civil enough to want to work with gwen. that still comes out of nowhere in gs.

gwen and the band have reconnected... but we don't really see the four girls sit and talk it out. i guess it happened in between the final performance and the plane ride home.

confirmation that the point of smash is that "gwen stacy matters just as much as ghost-spider, and you've been neglecting that side of yourself". love it.

em and glory haven't broken up. but they also haven't acknowledged em's thing for gwen at all and what it means for their relationship. that can gets kicked down the road.

so em jay IS still in love with gwen.

and gwen isn't in love with em jay. no I Loved You All Along to be found. (good. gwenjay shippers keep forgetting that gwen isn't nearly as into em as em's into her. and that the point of ghost-spider isn't to switch the center of gwens' world from a boyfriend to a girlfriend. this writer knows the continuity, and the point of gwen's character.)

BUT. gwen doesn't shut it down and leaves the door open. also consistent with the mcguire run AND a good buildup to gwen's behavior towards em in gs: she's literally on the verge of coming out.

no twist villain in natasha. idk if she's 'black widow' or just 'natasha' but she's definitely working for shield. and good setup for her and gwen working together again in gs.

mortis's setup makes her presence in gs feel less random. still don't really feel wowed by her personality or design, but i like that gwen's getting a unique villain that isn't just a carbon copy of one of peter's. i wouldn't miss her if we never saw her again, but i'd also like to see someone write the hell out of her someday.

the cliffhanger is fantastic. perfect lead-in to giant-size.

and since we know giant-size acknowledges that em jay's toxic behavior towards gwen isn't okay, that makes another part of this issue go down easier. no, the writer isn't turning a blind eye to em being an asshole; she's setting up that GWEN is the one who can't see it.

other notes:

very interested in melissa flores' decision to make mutants a big part of smash. mutants in earth-65 are basically a blank slate, and it's nice to meet a few and learn that they are a known thing. would love to hear more about them.

love the desert mesa location of banner's bunker. it looks great. (also "an abandoned bunker in the middle of las vegas" says gwen, who is in fact in the middle of a desert and not the city of las vegas. writing error or does gwen think las vegas is a state.)

love that gwen isn't into working with shield. one of the most interesting things about latour gwen was her distrust of authority by the end of the run, and about earth-65's shield being shady and untrustworthy. i'm so glad she isn't jumping at the chance to work with them again. she's almost back from her girlboss relapse.

loved seeing gwen team up with another older female hero. i said it in gs, i'll say it here too. also feels apt that instead of teaming up with captain america, an older, more pragmatic gwen pairs up with a shadier agent.

love that we get to both acknowledge that em jay's in love with gwen AND that she's an asshole to her, without excusing the assholery or downplaying the love. it's not that hard!

LOVE that gwen says she's open to the possibility of a relationship with em, which is so close to coming out i could yell. for the first time, gwen has said she's open to a relationship with another woman.

it's not the same as going through with it, or saying "i'm bi" out loud, but it's a big step forward.

love that the songs throughout smash play directly into the emotional plotlines: opening the run about gwen redeeming herself to her friends with em jay singing about second chances. closing with a dazzler song about confusing love with possession and the pain of learning you can't own your crush as em jay attacks gwen.

enjoying more that shippy shit with gvc round 2. em jay sure loves pinning gwen to walls and licking her.

not enjoying that glory and em jay never get any closure on em treating glory like a placeholder for gwen.

love the twist that it's em jay who doesn't see gwen in the end. gwen didn't acknowledge em's feelings-- but em doesn't treat gwen like her own person, and that's a lot more serious. she's very much like peter parker 65 in this way.

not so sure about the whole "carnage is your true self" "no she's not" argument.

-> the whole thing about earth-65 symbiotes is that they ARE a reflection of your true self. they don't corrupt you, they amplify who you were the whole time.

-> so either the writer doesn't know that, or the gamma blasts into carnage mutated the symbiote into something different from gwen's.

-> gwen's symbiote is her true self. em jay's is her worst self.

love the inversion of 65-bruce being the asshole and hulk being his kinder side.

.... but idk what to do with the argument that "deep down, this creepy stalker who abducts women is actually a good guy." no he isn't! fuck that guy!

i really don't know what to do with him being paralleled to em jay in that way. because on the one hand, if we believe he is a good dude, like natasha seems to imply, all his shitty behavior's excused. nope. not okay.

on the other, if the characters are misguided in giving bruce an out, then they are for em jay too. which means deep down, em jay's intentions are absolutely not good and carnage really is the essence of her true feelings for gwen.

which is compelling as a source of future conflict and fits with em's behavior in previous issues: em jay is not good for gwen. she has a controlling streak, she gets violently angry when gwen does the smallest thing she doesn't like, and she wants more from gwen than gwen can ever give her. that shouldn't end well.

(just because they're women doesn't mean the relationship can't still be toxic or abusive. diet harlivy indeed.)

technically this is paid off in smash, when gwen and em jay can't unpack their feelings because em's own toxicity is in the way, and em takes responsibility for taking care of that shit on her own before they do.

but tbh i'd prefer it if we went into it more. especially since we don't actually know if any of em's symbiote boot camp will stick with her-- there's a pretty good chance that if we see her again, she'll be the same asshole as before. good opportunity to actually address the toxicity instead of getting rid of it offpage.

anyway great foreshadowing in this splash page-- for the smash conflict, and potentially the gwenjay relationship down the line if we ever get there. em jay's emotional issues are a festering wound that's going to fuck up their dynamic, and gwen's way out of that is remembering that she's more than just Someone's Girlfriend.

so. all in context...

alright i was going into this mini skeptical. with the 616 run around the corner i was wondering if smash would be about severing her ties to 65 and her friends, and killing the possibility of gwenjay happening right before gwen's thrown into 616 future gwilesification.

what a surprise. smash doesn't do that at all, and it's actually fucking good. smash+giant size is the best comic gwen's had since the mcguire run. you could skip all her other minis and come right here, even. there's great attention to gwen's continuity, her supporting cast, and her character, and real love for her world. it balances the fanservice of giving the people the gwenjay they want without making that relationship gwen's entire purpose for being or absolving em of her shitty behavior. oh my god remember when spider-gwen comics weren't about forcing her into the multiverse? remember when they were good? this is what it felt like!

great reintroduction to earth-65 that smooths out some of the dangling threads from the end of the mcguire run and gwen's absence. even all the loose ends in giant-size feel like they were meant to be a perfect launch for a 65-based gwen solo.

.... which we know isn't coming. astonishing how stupid it was to hire a writer to reintegrate gwen into her own world and get her one conversation away from coming out just to undo all that work one issue later and hurl her into spiderverse pandering. i think flores said she didn't know they'd do that and it shows. with that in mind, no hard feelings about giant-size being such a dud of an ending: it wasn't meant to be one.

well. anyway. the plus is that gwen has more reason than ever to go home and whoever gets her there has waiting for them a clear payoff to a long-awaited gwenship that's powerful enough to defeat gwiles, an arc about gwen finally coming out, plus a first arc villain in the sinister six. it's never been easier for her to go back and the hook is strong: everything we've been waiting for for a decade is Right There ready to go.

and it's never been dumber for her to leave again. once more, nothing against the sgtgs team, they might have great ideas, but that book needs to go down like the hindenburg because gwen being in 616 is more important than anything she'll do or anyone she'll meet there. getting her back to 65 is the biggest priority.

on that note: i'm not gonna buy it. not gonna talk about it. not gonna acknowledge it until it's cancelled (or, less likely, they keep the writer or book but gwen goes home to 65 for good after a few issues). so i might not be reading gwen's stuff for a while. oh well.

the way that the bl ‘sexuality crisis’ trope is also totally ignored, pat and pran were conflicted bc they loved a guy they were supposed to hate, not because they loved a guy 

the way pat and pran also feel like best friends as well as boyfriends 

the fight scenes are obviously staged and feel a lil cringey sometimes but you can tell the actors are having fun 

the outfits, everyone is so stylish tf 

the fact that engineering and architecture have beef for seemingly no reason?? like idk i just find it funny that these faculties just seem to hate each other for no apparent reason

A non-exhaustive list of things I love about this season of What We Do in the Shadows (in no particular order):

- Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss Guillermo. LISTEN. I love a manipulative bitch and it is unbelievably satisfying to finally see him having some power and control after so many seasons of being under appreciated and shit on.

Plus the inherent homoeroticism of manipulating the himbo vampire you've pledged service to is just *chef's kiss*

- Laslo having deeper connections with people other than Nadja. At first this season I was kind of like "wow they've really made horniness/pornography his whole personality" but actually the deeper friendships he's forged with Colin and Sean this season have been very sweet and I am all about it.

- Lots of hilarious interactions between the vamps and regular humans. I love seeing how absolutely deranged Nadja in particular is when she interacts with normal people.

- The Guide. I am constantly wishing for more female characters in the show so it's nice to see the Guide becoming a regular presence. I love her spooky passive aggressive vibe and I would love to see her become good friends with Nadja in particular.

- The casual acknowledgement and normalisation of queerness throughout. It's always been present to some extent but I love how this season in particular it extends beyond the vampires to the human characters as well. Things like Meg the lesbian receptionist and Sean casually (and seriously) referring to Guillermo as Nandor's boyfriend make a big difference for me personally.

- Nadja and Nandor on the vampiric council. There's something so fun about seeing two beautiful dumbasses grapple for power (and also Nadja in a position of authority is my kink)

- Derek coming back as a stupidly indiscreet vampire and dressing like a fucking goth magician. Literally so excited to see how his presence changes up the house dynamic.

Anyway I'm sure there's more but I just really love this show y'all

I actually adore Drastoria. I don't particularly like canon Draco (but fanon Draco is my whole entire heart), but the way this ship yanks me into my feels.

ZHANG QILING as CORIOLANUS from Coriolanus

did i choose these two because they’re arguably the hottest characters in each of their canon? maybe. also Cori Boy is the only one violent enough to even come CLOSE to xiao-ge’s deadly energy. I could have done Hamlet, who is the only other real Shakespearian swordsman, but Hamlet talks too much. also something about the desperation and side-switching that appeals to me. OH THEY BOTH HAVE GOOD TITS yeah that’s a good reason too

WANG PANGZI as THE FOOL from King Lear

okay before any of you come for me in the notes, the Fool is arguably the greatest Shakespearean character. They’re only CALLED the Fool cause it’s their job, but actually they’re the only one with any braincells in the play. Both start out as the archetypal comic relief character and then become the heart and soul of the story. The Fool makes a bunch of jokes and also prophesies the end and possibly is magic?? who’s to say. But anyway Pangzi also does all of those things and I feel like he should get to wear a funny hat. plus the Fool just has to deal with idiots trying to take his job by being clowns for free, and Pangzi can relate to that energy I think

LIU SANG as ARIEL from The Tempest

If it weren’t for just the SHEER amount of creepy magical energy they both exude, it’s the loyalty and sacrifice that does it for me. Not only are they both Ethereal Beings, there’s also a lot of sound ties to Ariel in The Tempest, so like it checks out. Plus they both Crouch. Also I just want Liu Sang to be able to smite some bitches sometimes. That would be good for him (it’s NOT because they’re both my favorite characters IT’S NOT)

Bai Haotian as Puck from A Midsummer Night’s Dream

So this is not only because i have a thing for casting women as Puck, but also because they fit so well together!! like. they both have crushes on people they perceive to be in authority! they both like being helpful! they both should get to be a little feral and also do magic! like Xiao Bai would be SUCH a cute Puck and if Wu Xie weren’t such a dumbass he’d make a good Oberon but alas. He is a Dumbass. so Xiao Bai is Puck but Wu Xie doesn’t get to be in Midsummer because he is simultaneously Too Dumb and Not Dumb Enough. 

LI CU as PRINCE HAL from Henry IV Part I

They’re both Morally Ambiguous but Fuck they look so good doing it. Can And Will manipulate literally any man into doing what they want. Su Nan was also a contender for Lady Macbeth because she resonates very strongly with the “Out, damned spot!” monologue, but she respects authority too much. A-Ning would not hesitate to kill the bitchass king of Scotland so that her family could ascend to the throne and I love that for her

ZHANG DADDY RISHAN as HAMLET from Hamlet

OKAY BEFORE ANYONE SAYS “brigid i know u chose them because ur a simp for zhang daddy rishan and ur a simp for hamlet stop being so predictable” LITERALLY NO ONE ELSE COULD DO IT THO???
