Never Trust A Cowboy With A Computer (AKA: Erron Black/Female reader smut)

I’ve had a lot of issues with this, I’ve had to edit the hell out of it, changing a bunch in the 1st chapter, so please reread Chapter 1 before jumping into the smut that is Chapter 2. CHAPTER 1:

For once, the absolutely only time in recent history, your hair is behaving, thank the Gods! Actually, is there a God of Hair? Hmmm, maybe Kano would know? His stories of meeting Gods are always fascinating, even though he always exaggerates his role and prowess in encounters with said Gods. There is simply no way on Earthrealm that Kano could have stolen the Thunder God’s hat without being zapped into the Netherrealm. Plus, Kano has never produced this hat, so whenever he has one too many beers and starts on another night of tall tales, you nod along and feign complete belief in his words.

Maybe one day you’ll get to meet a God? Not likely whilst you’re stuck behind a computer for hours and hours every single day. Especially working alongside Erron-sodding-Black. He’s gone through at least 5 computers this year, 2 in the past three weeks! You swear he was doing it on purpose. In your steamiest daydreams he’s deliberately breaking his computers so you’ll have to travel to the ‘Black Dragon Boyz office’ (and yes, they spell it with a ‘z’) to spend precious time un-fucking his computer. You spend much of your time hacking into Special Forces super secret files, reading General Sonya Blade’s horribly dry mission reports, or transferring money from one Swiss bank account to another before you could be traced. Well, that was why Kano had hired you. Yet these past few months you’ve been dragged to broken computer after broken computer by the obscenely handsome aforementioned Erron Black at least once a week. You hadn’t minded the first few times, after all, any time spent in Erron’s company makes you all giddy and wibbly-wobbly inside your knickers. His voice honestly does things to you, actually makes parts that shouldn't tingle at work, tingle. He has warm eyes that seem to sparkle whenever he speaks to you, or catch you staring at him, not that you stare at him. Much. OK, maybe a little. He has a smile that is likely illegal in half the known world. Long, strong fingers that you so often think about, especially when you watch him dance a coin across his knuckles when he’s thinking, his trick to keep his fingers supple. No, no no. No thinking about him. He obviously isn't interested in you. He’s a simple man when it comes to that. You’ve seen him make moves on people who catch his eye; he’ll watch them for a while, then walk up to them, give them a smile, tell them plainly what he wanted. Then you’ll watch them walk off together whilst your heart dissolves into self pity. A few months ago, you made a real effort to try to stop flirting with him. No more lingering looks while spending more time than needed helping him with his computer. The man was multi-talented with most things, just not computers. It probably didn't help that he didn’t grow up around modern technology. You gently tease him about being old and doddery around computers and he takes the jokes well, and really, you miss joking around with him, but it was for the best. Kabal jostles with you for mirror space, smoothing down his hair and giving the mirror a big grin. Why is it so easy for men like him? He probably rolls out of bed after 2 hours sleep with his face in a half-eaten curry and he’ll still wake up ridiculously handsome (the git). Whereas it takes a lot of fussing to even get your hair to behave, let alone look nice and shiny like Kabal’s does. Maybe you could make a small shrine in the corner of your bedroom to the Hair God? You nod to yourself, thinking Kabal must have done that. “Come on, you look beautiful. Now get your coat and scarf, and we’re outta here. If we don’t leave soon, we’ll miss it!” Kabal fusses with his coat buttons. Always unable to keep still, the man practically radiates excess energy. “I WILL BE SAD IF WE MISS THE FILM.” Tremor stands up from his own desk, the building shaking ever so slightly with the enormous man’s movements. “Not as sad as Kabal. He’ll start bawlin’ if he misses his boyfriend’s new film.” Erron spins round in his brand new swivel chair, his eyes glinting with mischief. “Johnny Cage is NOT my boyfriend and I don’t even care about missing the film.” Kabal bristles with indignation. He did care about missing it. He cares a lot. “I don’t even like his films, or him. I’m just watching it ironically.” Erron laughs. You feel that laughter, deep inside and it demands attention. Bastard. “Suuuure. Enjoy your boyfriend.” “He is NOT my boyfriend!” This was going to end up in another fight. Last week Kabal had called Erron ‘Old Man Withers’. Erron had retaliated by drawing on Kabal’s Johnny Cage calendar. (The moustache and glasses actually suited the ridiculously handsome movie star.) So Kabal put a mouse in Erron’s desk drawer and recorded Erron’s screams, playing them every so often whilst laughing. The feud had gone on until Kano forced them to apologise to one another, in front of everyone. This sort of idiocy happened probably twice a month. It had escalated to where people now made bets on how long each feud will last. The longest feud had lasted 23 long days before Kano had flipped. “I DO NOT WANT TO BE LATE.” Tremor tugs open the office door and the handle will need replacing. Again. You follow after the huge man, Kabal behind you is muttering about revenge. “Hey, Sweetheart, you goin’ too?” It takes a second before you realise that sultry Texan drawl is aimed at you. “Oh, yes. There was a spare ticket since Kira’s still stuck on a job.” Oh shit, you should have offered it to Erron instead. You’d been so excited to be included in the cinema plans that you’d been selfish and not asked if Erron had wanted to go. “But……” Erron’s face scrunches a little and he turns to his computer and hits a few keys in quick succession. “It ain’t workin’ again. Sorry, darlin’.” He gestures helplessly to his computer. “But… I only fixed it this morning! What have you done this time?!” You drop your bag to the floor, and peel off your coat with a frustrated groan. You are going to get fired, there was no way Kano would believe this. You are completely and utterly incompetent. No other reason. Your fault. “It’s those darn computer gremlins again.” He gives you an apologetic smile and shrugs with frustration at the computer gremlins. You sigh and wave goodbye to Kabal and Tremor, both eager to watch Ninja Mime’s latest adventure. This one was in SPACE and it was going to be amazing, and you were going to miss it. Nooooooo! You stomp over to Erron’s computer, your mouth twists into a grumpy pout. “That is it. No more computers for you! you want to do some work; then you can bloody well do it on a typewriter.” Erron replies with a “Heyyyyyyy” and a laugh. Sitting in the office in silence because the pair of you are idiots. “I can do that.” He throws out a warm smile. “Really. The man who can’t even use a mouse without breaking it, can fix this mess?” You can’t help but roll your eyes. If he even so much as looks at the computer it will probably catch fire. “I maybe exaggerated my lack of skills.” His smile wavers, and slides from warm to worried. You are going to kill him if this was going where you suspect it is going. “I maybe might’ve deliberately caused the error.” He holds up his hands in surrender. Yup, you’re definitely going to have to kill him. “I maybe did some classes a few years back when I was at a loose end.” “…… I’m going to kill you!” “How ‘bout I make it up to you? I take you out for dinner, there’s this patisserie we can go afterwards for the best pastries in Moscow. Chapter 2

The flat is dark and cold when you finally get home. The bus had been late, and Russia in autumn is hardly the most fun time of year to be kept waiting at a bus stop. Scooping up Bob and tiptoeing to the door, you peep through the spyhole to instead see Erron waving at the spyhole. In your steamiest daydreams he was deliberately breaking his computer so you’d have to travel to the ‘Black Dragon Boyz office’ (and yes, they did spell it with a z) to spend precious time un-fucking his computer. Every time it happened, you swore you were just going to tell him to go bother someone else, or get his arse down to PC World and find some spotty 17 year old work experience boy to bother rather than yourself. After all, you were doing just as an important job for the Black Dragon as he, well, almost. He might be a super amazing dead-shot sniper capable of assassinating even the most heavily guarded target, but you weren’t just IT support, you were a Black Dragon member too. You spent much of your time hacking into Special Forces super secret files, reading General Sonya Blade’s horribly dry mission reports, or transferring money from one Swiss bank account to another before you could be traced. Well, that was why Kano had hired you. Yet these past few months you’d been dragged to broken computer after broken computer by the obscenely handsome aforementioned Erron Black at least once a week. You hadn’t minded the first few times, after all, any time spent in Erron’s company made you all giddy and wibbly-wobbly inside your knickers. His voice honestly did things to you, actually made parts that shouldn’t tingle at work, tingle. Whereas it took a lot of fussing to even get your hair to behave, let alone look nice and shiny like Kabal’s did. Maybe you could make a small shrine in the corner of your bedroom to the Hair God? You nodded to yourself, thinking Kabal must have done that. “Come on, you look beautiful. Now get your coat and scarf, and we’re outta here. If we don’t leave soon, we’ll miss it!” Kabal fussed with his coat buttons. Always unable to keep still, the man practically radiated excess energy. “I will be sad if we miss the film.” Tremor stood up from his own desk, the building shaking ever so slightly with the enormous man’s movements. “Not as sad as Kabal. He’ll start bawlin’ if he misses his boyfriend’s new film.” Erron spun round in his brand new swivel chair, his eyes glinting with mischief. “Johnny Cage is NOT my boyfriend and I don’t even care about missing the film.” Kabal bristled with indignation. So Kabal put a mouse in Erron’s desk drawer and recorded Erron’s scream, playing it every so often while laughing, and it had gone on until Kano had forced them to apologise to one another, in front of everyone. This happened probably twice a month. It got to where people made bets on how long each feud would last. The longest feud had lasted 23 long days before Kano had flipped. “I do not want to be late.” Tremor tugged open the office door, the handle would need replacing. Again. You followed after the huge man, Kabal behind you muttering about revenge. “Hey, Sweetheart, you goin’ too?” It took a second before you realised that sultry Texan drawl was aimed at you. “Oh, yes. There was a spare ticket since Kira’s still stuck on a job.” Oh shit, you should have offered it to Erron instead. You’d been so excited to be included in the cinema plans that you’d been selfish and not asked if Erron had wanted to go. “But……” Erron’s face scrunched a little and he turned to his computer and hit a few keys in quick succession. “It ain’t workin’ again. Sorry, darlin’.” He gestured to his computer. “But… I only fixed it this morning! What have you done this time?!” You dropped your bag to the floor, and peeled off your coat with a frustrated groan. You were going to get fired as there was no way Kano would believe this. You were completely and utterly incompetent. No other reason. For the first 20 years or so of its life, the Mac was infamous for having only a single button on its mouse. That meant there was no way to right-click on a Mac mouse. HP EliteBook x360 1030 G7 Convertible Review: A Spectre Dragonfly Hybrid

The EliteBook x360 1030 G7 is HP's latest high-end ultra-thin business subnotebook positioned to be above the more affordable EliteBook 830 or ProBook families. It is, in many ways, the gray version of the more visually ravishing HP Elite Dragonfly. Nonetheless, the EliteBook x360 1030 G7 introduces several changes both inside and out to make it better than both the outgoing EliteBook x360 1030 G4 and first generation Dragonfly.

SKUs are plentiful ranging from the 10th gen Core i5-10210U up to the Core i7-10810U CPU with vPro, FHD to 4K UHD AMOLED touchscreen, 8 GB to 32 GB of LPDDR4-2933 RAM, and up to 2 TB of storage with optional Optane 3D Xpoint. All configurations come with Comet Lake-U CPUs, Gorilla Glass, and integrated UHD Graphics 620. Our specific test unit is a mid-range SKU with the Core i7-10810U CPU, FHD display, and 16 GB of RAM for approximately $2400 USD.

Competitors to the EliteBook x360 1030 G7 include the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga, Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, Asus ZenBook S Flip, and other ultra-thin subnotebooks designed for office use.

Case

If you've held an EliteBook in the past, then you already have a good idea of how the EliteBook x360 1030 G7 looks and feels. HP's design philosophy for the EliteBook series hasn't changed for a sense of consistency between generations. The aluminum-magnesium skeleton may be getting smaller and lighter, but it still feels rigid with only a bit of flexing and creaking when twisting its sides. Larger and heavier business clamshells like the Dell Latitude 7400 feel sturdier.

The easiest way to distinguish the EliteBook x360 1030 G7 from the x360 1030 G4 is by looking at the rear corners and bottom "chin" bezel. HP has incorporated the "diamond-cut" visual design of the Spectre series while reducing the thickness of the bottom bezel even further to trim down overall volume.

The narrower bottom bezel has cut 11 mm off the length of the chassis. Consequently, the newer system is also lighter by about 100 grams (1.3 kg vs. 1.2 kg). The gen-to-gen changes may sound minor, but they're certainly tangible especially when traveling or on-the-go where every gram and millimeter counts. Note that thickness hasn't changed from the last generation model.

Connectivity

Port options and positioning are slightly different from the x360 1030 G4. HP has added a second USB-A port while the DriveLock port is now along the left edge. Note that there is still no SD card reader as HP is encouraging owners to use its QuickDrop software instead. QuickDrop allows a direct Wi-Fi connection between the PC and smartphone for much faster file transfers than Bluetooth, but users who rely on camera SD cards will still be out of luck.

Communication

Built-in wired and wireless communication modules, alternative solutions available (UMTS)?, Irregularities (radio reception)?

Security

This generation introduces HP Presence Aware on top of the usual fingerprint reader, webcam shutter, DriveLock, and HP Client security features. Presence Aware can detect when a user is nearby by up to a few feet in front of the laptop to automatically put the laptop to sleep if nobody is around. Conversely, it can also automatically login when combined with Windows Hello should it detect a nearby user. It is essentially HP's version of Dell ExpressSign-In as found on sound high-end Latitude systems albeit with a wider field-of-view in front of the laptop (60 degrees vs. 40 degrees)

Maintenance

The bottom panel is secured by six accessible T5 Torx screws for easy servicing. Though RAM and WLAN are soldered, the WWAN module and M.2 SSD are removable.

Accessories and Warranty

The packaging includes a USB-C to USB-A cable and an HP L04729-003 active pen. The pen attaches to the left edge of the laptop magnetically, but we prefer to just put it in our pocket as it feels much more secure that way.

A one-year limited warranty comes standard instead of the three-year timeframe that we've come to expect from high-end business systems.

Input Devices

Keyboard

Keyboard size and feedback remain the same as on the EliteBook x360 1030 G4 which is a good thing because we found the laptop to be more comfortable for typing than the softer keys on the Asus ZenBook Flip and most other Ultrabooks. Instead, the bigger changes relate to the secondary functions on the first row of keys. The video conferencing and calendar keys on the last generation model in particular have now been replaced with a camera shutter toggle, airplane mode toggle, and a customizable programmable key. Such functions are arguably more versatile.

Touchpad

Clickpad size has changed ever so slightly from the x360 1030 G4 (11.6 x 6.3 cm vs. 11.1 x 6.5 cm). Its surface is completely smooth and with almost no sticking even if gliding at very slow speeds in contrast to most other laptops. A little bit of sticking would have been preferable for more accurate dragging and dropping, but that is merely a personal taste.

Meanwhile, the integrated mouse clicks are relatively soft in both feedback and clatter with shallow travel overall. Stronger feedback would have made clicking easier and more ergonomic. We definitely miss the TrackPoint and dedicated mouse buttons on traditional business laptops like the EliteBook 840 G5, but we can understand their omission here on a convertible designed for touchscreen use.

Display

Our EliteBook x360 1030 G7 uses a Chi Mei panel as opposed to the InfoVision panel on the older EliteBook x360 1030 G4. However, HWiNFO is unable to identify the exact panel name here other than the Chi Mei CMN13A9 controller. Our specific configuration comes with the base 400-nit 1080p panel which is already better than most subnotebook displays in terms of contrast and sharpness. Response times remain somewhat slow for noticeable ghosting, though this isn't an issue for most office workloads

Color space covers >95 percent of sRGB while the pricier 4K UHD OLED configuration is expected to offer deeper colors covering all of AdobeRGB. We're just glad to not see any cheap panels even on the entry-level configurations.

X-Rite colorimeter measurements reveal a decently calibrated display out of the box. Gamma, however, could be better as it's unusually low. Calibrating the panel ourselves would improve colors and grayscale noticeably from average DeltaE values of 4.39 and 3.9 to 1.65 and 1.9, respectively.

Outdoor visibility is average due to the glossy Gorilla Glass overlay. Luckily, HP offers 1000-nit display options which should improve visibility dramatically albeit at the cost of higher power consumption. All 1000-nit SKUs at the moment come with Sure View meaning you can't have one without the other. Business subnotebooks from Dell or Lenovo have yet to carry such options.

Performance

HP is sticking with the 10th gen Intel Comet Lake-U series at the moment due its support for vPro in contrast to the newer 11th gen Tiger Lake options. Users won't be seeing any Iris Plus or Iris Xe graphics options here as a result. It's too bad that there is no "EliteBook x360 1035" series with AMD options as that would have boosted graphics performance.

RAM is soldered meaning users must choose their configurations carefully. Our system was set to HP Optimized prior to running any performance benchmarks below.

Processor

CPU performance is faster than expected for short benchmarks while scores are a bit lower for longer benchmarks due to the short-lived Turbo Boost performance of the laptop. CineBench R20 xT, for example, is within 10 percent of the average Core i7-10810U in our database while shorter benchmarks like GeekBench or 7-Zip show favor our HP slightly more. Nonetheless, raw multi-thread performance is only slightly faster than the Core i7-1065G7 and even slower than the cheaper Ryzen 5 4500U in the HP ProBook x360 435 G7.

System Performance

PCMark benchmarks are where we expect them to be relative to other Comet Lake-U systems. Core i7 Ice Lake and Tiger Lake systems like the XPS 13 and ZenBook Flip S are able to edge out the HP likely due to the faster RAM and integrated Iris GPUs.

We experienced no software or hardware issues during our time with the test unit. HP Presence Aware is enabled by default, but this can be easily toggled through the software.

DPC Latency

LatencyMon shows DPC latency issues when opening multiples tabs on our homepage. 4K UHD playback is otherwise smooth and with no dropped frames during our minute-long YouTube test.

Storage Devices

Our configuration comes equipped with the Samsung PM981a which is one of the fastest PCIe 3 NVMe SSDs available for consumers. Drives from Toshiba and Western Digital tend to be cheaper, but they are also slower as well.

GPU Performance

Graphics performance is the same integrated UHD Graphics 620 that we've been familiar with for nearly half a decade. The GPU has become outdated especially in the face of newer Radeon RX or Iris Xe solutions, but this shouldn't be a huge issue for the target audience of light office users. HP has yet to offer higher graphics options for its EliteBook convertible subnotebooks.

Emissions

System Noise

The fans range from being silent at 28.1 dB(A) up to 31.3 dB(A) when running undemanding loads. Such low levels are essentially inaudible in a typical office or conference room. Higher loads equivalent to gaming will boost fan noise up to 35 or 37 dB(A) which is not uncommon on Ultrabooks with no dedicated graphics. Fan noise is slightly higher-pitched than we would like since the individual fans are so small in diameter.

Temperature

Surface temperatures are never uncomfortable as the hot spot is close to the rear where skin and hands are unlikely to touch. A specific area of the keyboard can become as warm as 37 C when running extreme loads compared to 43 C on the 2020 Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga.

Stress Test

HP EliteBook subnotebooks typically can't maintain very high clock rates when under stress and our Prime95 stress test proves it. Clock rates and temperature would boost to 3.1 GHz and 100 C, respectively, for just the first few seconds before quickly dropping to the 2.0 to 2.1 GHz range in order to maintain a cooler core temperature of 76 C as shown by our screenshots below.

Running on batteries will impact CPU performance slightly. A 3DMark 11 test on battery power would return Physics and Graphics scores of 8173 and 1893 points, respectively, compared to 8534 and 1942 points when on mains.

Energy Management

Power Consumption

Idling on desktop demands between 1.5 W and 10 W depending on the power profile and brightness setting to be slightly more power efficient than than what we recorded on the older x360 1030 G4 model. We're able to record a temporary maximum draw of 68.9 W from the small (~8.8 x 5.3 x 2 cm) 65 W CA adapter when running Prime95 which is similar to many other Ultrabooks powered by Ice Lake or Comet Lake-U CPUs. Note that the Tiger Lake-powered Asus ZenBook Flip S is able to offer 150 percent faster GPU performance without necessarily drawing more power.

Battery Life

Though battery capacity hasn't really changed from the older Whiskey Lake-U-powered EliteBook x360 1030 G4, WLAN runtimes are still about an hour longer on the newer G7 model for a total runtime of almost 10.5 hours. Charging from empty to full capacity takes about 1.5 hours.

Verdict

The HP EliteBook x360 1030 G7 is a tough convertible to beat. It's got 4G LTE, proximity sensor, and 1000-nit panel options that most competing alternatives don't offer. Its long list of features is impressive considering the small form factor involved. When compared to the outgoing EliteBook x360 1030 G4, the G7 is a worthy step up.

The main drawbacks to the HP convertible are the limited graphics performance, spongy clickpad, and high starting price. Owners will be stuck with the outdated UHD Graphics 620 while the clickpad is nowhere near as easy to use as the touchpad on the EliteBook 845. Be prepared to pay close to $2000 USD or more even for the least expensive Core i5 configuration. We understand that processor performance has never been a key selling point for any EliteBook convertible, but the fact that a cheap Ryzen 5 4500U can outperform the best Comet Lake-U Core i7 option available on this $2000 system is hard to ignore.

Where will HP go from here? We predict that future models might make the jump to 16:10, incorporate eSIM, wireless charging, or upgrade to Thunderbolt 4 via Intel's 11th gen Core platform. But until then, this is easily one of our favorite 13.3-inch convertibles for both office and travel.

Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 Review

We don’t review many laptops aimed at commercial buyers, but this particular one from Dell is a little special. We first saw the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 during CES this year, where it was billed as the world’s first PC to use Intel’s Context Sensing technology. What this means is that sensors in the display bezels can detect when you’re away from the laptop or in front of it, in order for it to lock itself or wake up automatically. It’s a cool trick, which worked well when we tried it at CES.

As the name suggests, this is a convertible so it can be used as a tablet. It also has an optional 4G SIM slot for LTE connectivity, and lots of enterprise-level features for security and remote management thanks to the vPro-enabled Intel CPU. All in all, the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 looks like a good package, and it’s time to see how it performs.

Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 design

The Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is premium business laptop, which is very evident from the moment you take it out of its box. It doesn’t have a very large footprint, so it’s easy to carry around, and the weight of about 1.36kg means it’s not too heavy either. Most of the body and lid are made from machined aluminium, which feels very premium and well put-together. The edges and corners are rounded too, so it’s not uncomfortable in the hand.

The Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 has a premium aluminium build and doesn’t weigh a lot

Dell has gone with a drop hinge design, which keeps the bottom of the display close to the surface of the lower half and hides a bit of the bottom bezel. This, coupled with the slim bezels on the other three sides, give the appearance of a larger screen. The 14-inch full-HD (1920×1080) display has a 16:9 aspect ratio and a maximum brightness of 300nits. It’s also touch-enabled, since this is a convertible laptop, and there’s Gorilla Glass 5 to protect it against scratches. The hinge allows the display to rotate all the way back, so this laptop can be used as a tablet. There’s support for Dell’s Active Pen too, which is a Rs. 6,500 (plus GST) optional accessory.

The lid offers excellent reinforcement for the display with little to no flex and absolutely no pixel warping, even when we applied pressure. The base of the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is quite slim and houses all the ports. You get two USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A ports, one on either side of the laptop; two Type-C Thunderbolt 3 ports on the left which can be used to charge the laptop; a full-sized HDMI 1.4 port; a microSD card slot; a Micro-SIM tray for LTE connectivity; a Noble Wedge lock slot; SmartCard reader; and a headphone/microphone combo port. We would have preferred a full-sized SD card slot here instead of a microSD one. There’s also no Ethernet port, which is worth noting for a commercial laptop.

The keyboard area is a bit sunken so the keys are at the same level as the palm rest area. This prevents the keys from making a lot of contact with other surfaces when you’re using the laptop in tent or tablet mode. The keys themselves are a little smaller than usual, which took some getting used to. However, the travel is good and they aren’t noisy even with vigorous typing. The power button is located separately on the right and on our review unit, it had an integrated fingerprint sensor, which is an optional feature. The glass trackpad is large and works very well, thanks to Microsoft’s Precision drivers.

There’s a decent set of ports but we wished Dell had used a full-sized SD card reader, instead of a microSD one

The Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 has cutouts on the bottom for airflow, along with two separate ones for the stereo speakers. The base is held together by standard Philips screws placed around its the periphery, so it shouldn’t be too hard to access the internals.

Our test unit came with a 65W USB Type-C charging brick. The adapter is quite compact so it’s not a big problem to carry around.

Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 specifications and software

Since this is a commercial laptop, typically an IT manager or an individual buyer would have to send Dell the exact configuration they require in order to get a price quote. However, Dell does sell a few predefined configurations of the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 as retail units on its website, and buyers can customise these to some extent or simply buy one as is. Unfortunately, LTE connectivity is not available even as an option on the pre-configured units, so you’ll have to special order one if you want the SIM slot.

The configuration that Dell sent us for review includes an Intel Core i7-8665U quad-core CPU, based on the 8th Gen ‘Whiskey Lake’ architecture. This also includes Intel’s vPro extensions, aimed at providing IT admins the tools needed to remotely push updates, run diagnostics, and manage security. This CPU is a 15W part, with a base clock of 1.9GHz and a maximum turbo frequency of 4.8GHz. Our unit was configured with 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM which is soldered on; integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620; and a 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD. There’s also dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon X20 LTE modem.

The Dell Express Sign-In app lets you configure the motion sensing feature

Our version of the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 came with Microsoft Windows 10 Pro, along with Microsoft Office Professional 2019. Once again, the bundled software is configurable so you can opt for no Office suite or add a subscription to McAfee Small Business Security, based on your company’s needs. You also get a three-year basic onsite warranty as part of the package, or you can opt for one with a longer duration and ‘next business day’ service, by paying more.

The laptop also ships with a bunch of Dell utilities such as Power Manager, Support Assist, and Command Centre, which we’ve seen before on some of its other laptops. One tool that’s new is Express Sign-in. Once you’ve set up face recognition for Windows Hello in the Settings menu, you can simply flip a toggle switch to enable Express Sign-in. You can set a timer (up to 3 minutes) for when the laptop should lock after you move away. The laptop will wake up if it detects the presence of anyone in front of it, but will only unlock with your face. It works pretty seamlessly, and requires no manual intervention, which adds a bit of convenience.

Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 performance and battery life

The Core i7 version of the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 that we reviewed ran very well. Boot times were quick thanks to the speedy SSD; the fingerprint sensor and face recognition worked very well; and Windows in general ran smoothly. We didn’t find the laptop too warm either when doing basic tasks. The screen’s touch response was good too, although this device isn’t the most comfortable to use as a tablet.

Windows Ink workspace lets you access some stylus-friendly apps, and more can be downloaded from the Windows Store. Dell sent us the optional stylus to try out. It’s powered by a single AAAA battery and has a flattened side which can snap onto either side of the laptop with the help of magnets. The pressure-sensitive tip is ideal for sketching, and the latency is very low, which makes it feel like you’re using an actual pen.

The Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is great for productivity. The keyboard is very comfortable for typing on for long stretches at a time, once you get used to the slightly smaller keys. There are two levels of backlighting. The glass trackpad works very well for using the mouse pointer and gestures. The display’s brightness is more than adequate, and colours are vivid and lively.

Besides work, the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 does a decent job with media playback too. High-resolution videos looked good, images appeared sharp, and colours were mostly on point. There’s WavesAudio Pro software for sound tuning. The stereo speakers get decently loud and sound alright for personal listening.

Cellular connectivity worked very well in our experience. We popped in an Airtel 4G SIM card, which Windows automatically detected and configured. A little ‘Cellular’ toggle switch in Windows’ notification area lets you manage the connection. In terms of privacy features, the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 doesn’t have a shutter to physically cover the webcam or the SafeScreen privacy feature for the display which severely restricts viewing angles. Some of Dell’s other models do offer these features,and Dell has informed Gadgets 360 that they should be added to the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 as options in the near future.

Speaking of the webcam, the camera produces good quality videos even indoors. It’s ‘Skype for Business’ certified and is accompanied by two microphones for better audio.

We ran our suite of benchmarks on the Latitude 7400 2-in-1, which returned decent results. Starting with CPU tests, Cinebench R20 returned single and multi-core scores of 419 and 1,336 respectively, while the POVRay benchmark took 3 minutes, 29 seconds to render a ray-traced scene. Coming to benchmarks that test the system as a whole, we got 3,889 points in PCMark 10 and 5,802 points in 3DMark’s Night Raid test for integrated graphics. Real-world tests showed promise too. It took about 4 minutes, 4 seconds to finish compressing a 3.2GB folder of assorted files; 1 minute, 44 seconds to encode a 1080p AVI file to 720p H.265; and 14 minutes, 22 seconds to finish the BMW test render in Blender.

The Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is rated to deliver more than a day’s worth of battery life, but this claim is for the Core i5 version with a 78WHr battery, as pointed out by Dell itself. All the pre-configured models in India ship with 52WHr batteries. Our review unit, with its Core i7 processor, didn’t get anywhere close to Dell’s claim. With Wi-Fi enabled, the brightness set to 50 percent with the keyboard backlight at its lower level, and the Windows power mode set to ‘Better battery,’ we were able to get around 10-11 hours of near-non-stop usage. This typically involved working within Chrome and watching videos on YouTube.

If you’re not using demanding apps then you should be able to get through an entire workday or even a long flight without needing to charge this laptop. When using cellular connectivity for similar work, we noticed a slight reduction in battery life. The Battery Eater Pro benchmark ran for 2 hours and 8 minutes, which is a little less than what we expected.

Dell’s Power Manager app for the battery is quite useful

Dell’s Power Manager utility is worth mentioning here, as it has some neat features when it comes to charging the battery. Besides being able to set different power profiles, there’s a feature called ‘Peak Shift’ which lets you specify time slots for when the laptop will charge, use battery power, or simply use power from the mains without charging the battery. This can be set for each day of the week, depending on your work schedule.

Verdict

The Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 doesn’t come cheap. At the time of this review, prices start at around Rs. 1,35,000 (with taxes) for the Core i5 model, and go up to about Rs. 1,63,000 for the top-end pre-configured model. If you were to custom-order one of these, the price would vary depending on the configuration and services you opt for.

There are a few things we would have liked done differently. A full-sized SD card slot instead of a microSD one would have been more useful, and a volume rocker and even a power button on the side, would have made for a more comfortable tablet experience. The HP Spectre x360 13 (Review), which we recently reviewed, had similar shortcomings, but it did offer privacy features for the webcam and display, which are yet to arrive on the Latitude 7400 2-in-1.
