hello! thought id share my lil breakdowns and inspo photos for the skz boyz in ariadne's thread. i will continue to add to this as we go through the story and introduce more of the boys! some of these will contain spoilers to the fic so i recommend reading it beforehand... -> series masterlist

Hyunjin, the Goblin King. Described as a honeyed blonde with blue eyes that seem to have hurricanes and storms trapped within them. Has been compared to Renaissance marble statues & paintings with how inhumanly beautiful he is and how his eyes seem to be a kind of wrathful beautiful. Wears dark leather and lace, many layered gold necklaces, and cloaks/capes! Later, will appear in sheer white loose tunics and black slacks, and then only white attire. Able to manipulate time and reality, as well as see into the future. Considered one of most powerful of faes - a High Fae with some Gancanagh-blood.

Jisung, the Goblin-Fae. Described as having oil-slick black-blue curly hair with big jewel-toned eyes that shift from more blue or more purple. Wears old and worn clothes that have been hand sewn with alterations - a brown vest, a white flowing tunic with the big sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and brown pants. Is decorated with many necklaces on his neck and rings on his fingers, a collection of jewels that he keeps tied to his cinched-belted waist alongside a beautiful dagger and various other knick-knacks he’s collected in the Desert Sea. Cannot utilize any magic but was trained with a dagger. Considered Goblin-Fae despite having some Dragon-blood tendencies such as hoarding and treasure-hunting.

So I was making a list of who I think should/ would be nominated for the Oscars this year and I put Martin Scorsese, Celine Song, Todd Haynes, Greta Gerwig and Justine Triet as my picks for best director. When my sister saw it she said that they are too many women on the list for it to be realistic. And then that made go down the rabbit hole of checking the list of Academy Awards for best directing because I was curious which year did the first female director win an Oscar.

Woah. 2009? 70 years after the first ceremony? Crazy. So then I decided to check how many women were even nominated.

Seven. Throughout 96 years of its existence the Academy nominated seven women for best directing:

- Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties in 1975

- Jane Campion for The Piano in 1993

- Sofia Coppola for Lost In Translation in 2003

- Kathryn Bigelow who won for The Hurt Locker in 2009

- Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird in 2017

- Emerald Fennel for Promising Young Woman in 2021

- Chloé Zhao who won for Nomadland, also in 2021.

Jane Campion was nominated again for The Power of the Dog in 2022 and won, making her the only double nominee in this group and the third woman to win best director.

I decided to check some other numbers from the list just to illustrate how ridiculous that number is.

Just in the first 10 ceremonies 7 Oscars went to guys named Frank (Frank Borzage, Frank Lloyd and Frank Capra). They were nominated 9 times in that period. Overall they got 12 nominations throughout the Academy's history. Guys named William got 18 Oscar nominations over the years (12 for Wyler alone).

Actually, let's stop there. Here are all the men who got nominated more or as many times as all the women:

- William Wyler (12)

- Martin Scorsese (9)

- Steven Spielberg (9)

- Billy Wilder (8).

And that's not to say that they didn't deserve these nominations of course. But when there are numerous individual men who got nominated more times than the entire other half of the population you can't really blame it on anything else than the Academy's biases and discrimination.

And that discrimination doesn't end with the Academy, of course. Celine Sciamma's phenomenal Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which ranked 30th on Sight and Sound's list of best movies of all time, didn't even get a chance to get nominated, because French Film Institute chose to campaign another adaptation of Les Miserables instead.

The discrimination doesn't end on gender. When it comes to people of color the Academy also isn't particularly generous. No black woman was ever nominated for best director. 6 black men were nominated:

- John Singleton for Boyz n the Hood in 1991

- Lee Daniels for Precious in 2009

- Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave in 2013

- Barry Jenkins for Moonlight in 2016

- Jordan Peele for Get Out in 2017

- Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman in 2018

10 Asians/ Asian Americans were nominated 13 times over the years:

- Hiroshi Teshigahara for Woman in the Dunes in 1965

- Akira Kurosawa for Ran in 1985 (a total travesty that he never won in that category)

- Terrence Malick for The Thin Red Line in 1998 and The Tree Of Life in 2011

- M. Night Shyamalan for The Sixth Sense in 1999

- Ang Lee for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000, Brokeback Mountain in 2005 and Life Of Pi in 2012 (he won for the latter two)

- Bong Joon-Ho for Parasite in 2019

- Lee Isaac Chung for Minari in 2020

- Chloé Zhao for Nomadland in 2020 (the only woman of color who won in the category)

- Ryusuke Hamaguchi for Drive My Car in 2021

5 Latin Americans were nominated 8 times. It got a bit murky here, since that's not really a racial category. I couldn't find a different list than that anywhere, so I had to play a little elimination game. I wouldn't count Guillermo del Toro. Héctor Babenco is apparently a son of Polish and Ukrainian Jews. And I'm pretty sure Fernando Meirelles wouldn't count either. So that leaves us with:

- Alejandro González Iñárritu for Babel in 2006, Birdman in 2014 and The Revenant in 2015

- maybe Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity in 2013 and Roma in 2018 - won both times (fun fact about Roma, the hype for it was so big in Poland that I always assumed it was a polish movie, until I actually watched it around 2021 when I got more into film). Though his case is where we can fully see how much of a social concept race is, since he simultaneously says that he grew up as a white man and his win for Roma was applauded as a diversity win in the Academy circles.

No Native American was ever nominated for Best Director.

I don't know what the point of this post is. I guess I knew that Oscars were a white sausage fest but I never checked the numbers to see just how much, and Best Director might just be the worst category in that regard.

So if you're placing bets on the Oscars, I guess it'll be safer to just pick 5 random white guys for best director, instead of going by the quality of the movies themselves.

I'd love to see Celine Song win for her beautiful debut, or Greta Gerwig for the biggest movie of 2023 and because she is one of my favorite directors ever, but that may be hard since we had a few years in a row where either women or people of color won in this category, so the old hacks responsible for the choices are probably dying to pick another white guy.

Had a longer-than-I-intended break from painting due to a move, but I’m back at an unpacked workbench in time for Orktober, that most sacred of Holidays. As usual for me, Orktober begins with a push to clear my painting queue.

So we’ve got three miniatures from the Chainmail miniature game - not the first one, the 2003 version. These are some of the first minis I ever bought, and painted completely wrong. I think I was using unthinned model car paints? Anyway, they got paint-stripped and this is take two, nearly two decades later. The two elves and the drake are from the Empire of Ravilla: a Gray Elf Wizard, a Gray Elf Noble, and a Spiked Felldrake. The Tengwar reads ‘naithrem’, or ‘spear-net’, because apparently Sindar doesn’t have a work for maille?

Next up is one of the Lu Tra, one of my Brain-Eating Otters From the Depths! and the skulls it is doubtless using for some necromantic ritual.

And the second Amazon statue from Bones 5. Since it had a stony texture, I decided to make it look like black-figure pottery. Mainly because I didn’t feel up to covering marble with the historically accurate assault of colors. Still censored because Tumblr still bans the Dreaded Female Presenting Nipple.

Lastly, this is what I’ve got Orktober: a trukk, ten shoota boyz and some big shootas, five tankbustas, some kommandos, and uhh, twenty-ish slugger ‘ardboys to fill out a kill team? I grabbed a box of the old-style boyz and bashed them together with a box of AoS ‘ardboys. Some of them may get scrap-wings so they can join the Living Orkon’s retinue.

My name is Lovino, but I go by Lovi or Lino.

I am an '00-liner, and am 22 years old (as of October 2022).

I am AFAB, but am Genderqueer/Non-Binary. I also use any pronouns!

I am Queer (i.e. not straight). I don't care enough about labels to delve further into that.

I am of mixed East & Southeast Asian ethnicity.

I was born in Southeast Asia (Vietnam, specifically!), but I have moved around a lot throughout my life so I've lived lots of places. I currently reside in Canada.

I can speak six (6) languages, but English is the one I'm most confident in, since it's the one I've used the most in life.

My MBTI is INFJ-T.

I love Sichuanese food (四川菜) a lot. Mapo Tofu (麻婆豆腐) & Sichuan Hot Pot (四川火鍋) are both among my favourite dishes of all time.

Two of my biggest comfort foods are Zòngzi (粽子) & Dòujiāng Yóutiáo (豆浆油条). They are very nostalgic and remind me a lot of my childhood.

My favourite colours are black, red, and pink.

My favourite books are The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde, 1890) & Demian (Hermann Hesse, 1919).

I don't watch TV. I am very uncultured when it comes to TV Shows & Films. I've never even seen Titanic.

Because I moved around so much growing up, I didn't really make many friends or socialise much. I blame my introversion and chronically online-ness on this. (Also this blog is low-key high-key an excuse/motivation for me to force myself out of my comfort zone by interacting with people.)

I love a schlocky B-Grade horror movie. From the absolute classics like Creature from the Black Lagoon and Them! to telemovie nonsense like Revenge of the Stepford Wives. There's something I just find really cozy about them, and when the mood strikes, I could watch them all day.

Oh gosh, too many to count! I have a lot of favourite actresses, and I talk a lot about my favourite Golden Age actresses on here, sooo let's go for five of my favourites currently working? This isn't ranked, and will probably change, haha, but they were the first that jumped to mind:

Nicole Kidman - honestly think she's one of the best working actresses today, and her range is insane. Love her commitment too to working both with women directors and Australian directors still. Fave roles: To Die For, Practical Magic, Eyes Wide Shut, Moulin Rouge!, The Hours, Cold Mountain, Rabbit Hole, Stoker, Big Little Lies, literally too many to count, I adore her.

Regina King - has been so underrated for much of her career, and I love seeing her start to get her flowers with the staggeringly good performances in American Crime, If Beale Street Could Talk and Watchmen. She always delivers, and I've loved her since Boyz n the Hood and Poetic Justice.

Michelle Yeoh - speaking of actresses finally getting their flowers!! God, Everything Everywhere All at Once is the best movie I've seen in a long time, and she just brings a legacy of talent with her. Other fave roles: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Sunshine, Marco Polo, Star Trek: Discovery.

Rose Byrne - literally is there anything she can't do? I just think she's magic and love how wide-ranging her career is. Fave roles: Two Hands, My Mother Frank, Sunshine, Spy, Mrs America (which I'm only halfway through, but still love her in, haha).

Saoirse Ronan - I've always liked her, but I think her career is just one that's really interesting. Roselia Parkinson-Flint, the daughter and eldest child of Marcus Flint & Pansy Parkinson. Rose was doted as a child and her mother loved to brag about how adorable she was to all her friends and the public, but behind closed doors was a different story. i went on a little trip down memory lane and watched YEARS of MAMA’s performances as a someone who’s been into k-pop and for anybody who is stalking my account or whatsoever, here’s a list of my FAVOURITE performances that you cannot miss out:

2022

KARA - LUPIN + STEP + MISTER: there was nothing that can rival their performance. after the long hiatus and after everything, it must’ve been so surreal to be performing in japan again, especially since they were the first korean gg to perform there back in the 2010s. they didn’t need the elaborate sets, they didn’t need the crazy number of backup dancers and the chain costumes nor a new choreography. it was perfect because it was original. 

(their performance is the only one i watched in full because i know everything else would not have lived up)

2020

THE BOYZ - REVEAL + CHECKMATE: the only year mama invited tbz and the year that they decided they could never have them back again because they had completely outdone themselves.

ATEEZ - INCEPTION + ANSWER: i HATED their color scheme. why black? but i’ve said it multiple times before and i’ll say it again: ateez has one of the strongest stage presences in recent years and they are STILL unrivalled. 

2019

ATEEZ - i watched this performance RELIGIOUSLY despite me only finding this a year later. the songs they chose, their costumes and their stage presence was extremely unrivalled. they just don’t have performances like this anymore.

2018

MAMAMOO - EGOTISTIC + STARRY NIGHT: some morsel in me believes that mamamoo is the female equivalent of ateez when it comes to stage presence and performance, of course not to talk about choreography and explosiveness because both groups have their different strengths. but, mmm undoubtedly has a beautiful control of the stage and they know how to interact with one another. 

2017

WANNA ONE - ENERGETIC + PICK ME: I had an unhealthy obsession with WANNA ONE and NAYANA. when the members performed it, i quite literally almost cried, and the song definitely has that concert grandeur which they pulled off very nicely.

2016

GFRIEND + SEVENTEEN: this was a WEIRD combination to me at that time, but it was so pleasant to watch because the set was gorgeous and i was in my seventeen era

EXO - Transformer + Monster: i loved transformer. and that platform that they were on.

BTS - Boy meets evil + BS&T: BTS in their early days had a kind of magic to them that made it difficult to look away 

2015 

BTS + BLOCK B: I don’t know if my taste in men has changed, nor do i know if my love for bts has changed, but this is the only time i watched a bts performance from mama religiously. i died over and over just watching jimin.

EXO - Black Pearl + Tell me what is love + Overdose: back before exo fully fell apart, they had one of the best stages ever. owe it to their huge member number but there was something irreplaceable about them.

2013

G-DRAGON - Crooked: If there’s a GD song that i will never forget, it’s this song. this party song was beautifully matched with the atmosphere.

2012

EXO + SHINEE - MAMA + LUCIFER: I was LOSING it back then. i watched this LIVE on tv so i was already bawling by the time they had performed MAMA, mirotic and then SHINEE showed up to do lucifer with theMMM!!!

2011

SNSD - THE BOYS: as a sone who LOVED this song, i remember being upset that sunny’s mic was not functioning properly. 

MISS A - GOODBYE BABY: this song had a fucking chokehold on me. i watched this religiously back then and finding it now gave me a whiplash
