'Amas Veritas' Prologue: The Man Who Didn't Exist
A/N: I can't believe I haven't done this yet either. I don't normally like to post anything so early in the writing process, but this prologue is finalized. If you're familiar with Practical Magic, then you understand the meaning behind this prologue. It's just a small tiny taste of what's to come, and posting it so early is a promise to myself I'll see this through.
Summary:
Practical Magic AU. Molly Hooper is a witch with an affinity for the dead, performing post-mortems in the town of Glengarriff, Ireland where she grew up. She comes from a cursed bloodline on her late mother's side, doomed to never find lasting love. When her relationship with James Moriarty goes awry, she calls upon another witch, Mary Morstan, her childhood best friend who is like a sister to her, to help her out of the mess she's in. After faking his death to fool his adversary, James Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes attempts to hunt the consulting criminal down after dismantling his network, only to find that the man he is after has disappeared. He returns 'from the grave' to investigate, dragging along his best friend, John Watson, only to find that an enchanting pathologist may be the key to unraveling the mystery.

Title: The Leaping Light
On the Emerald Isle, where ancient castles cast dark silhouettes against the vibrant green hills, the eve of St. Patrick's Day shimmered with magic. It was said that on this night, the veil between the earthly realm and the whimsical world of faeries and leprechauns grew thin, allowing enchanting creatures to roam.
In the heart of the mystical Glengarriff Forest stood Gortnloc Castle, an imposing structure steeped in legends. The villagers whispered that it harbored a leprechaun named Finn, known for his cleverness and nimble feet. Each year, Finn would hide his pot of gold deep within the castle's stone walls, provoking treasure-seekers from near and far. But this year, two unlikely heroes, Maeve and Liam, set forth with a mission far more profound than mere riches.
Maeve, a spirited girl with fiery red hair and a penchant for adventure, had watched her family's fortunes tumble since her father’s passing. Meanwhile, Liam, a soft-spoken boy with an eye for mischief, felt trapped in his role as the eldest son, forever living in the shadows of his more boisterous siblings. Together, they believed that if they could discover Finn’s gold, they might restore hope to their village and their own families.
As twilight settled over the moors, Maeve and Liam reached the ancient castle. Its stones glimmered under the silvery light of the rising moon, almost as if the castle itself was alive, breathing in the magic of the night. The two friends crept inside, heartbeats echoing in the silence, and immediately sensed something was amiss. The air crackled with anticipation, sending shivers down their spines.
“Did you hear that?” Maeve whispered, her voice barely breaking the stillness.
Before Liam could respond, a flickering golden light danced before them, leading deeper into the castle. The duo exchanged a glance brimming with excitement and fear, but their determination triumphed. They followed the light, which twisted and leaped, almost taunting them as it led them down stone corridors and past ancient tapestries that whispered secrets of the past.
Suddenly, the light darted into a grand hall, where moonlight spilled through cracked windows, illuminating forgotten treasures lost to time. In the center stood a small figure clad in emerald green – Finn himself, his emerald eyes twinkling with mischief.
“So, ye wish to find me gold?” Finn cackled, his voice echoing through the vast chamber. “But tell me, brave mortals, what will you do to prove your worth?”
Maeve, sensing a challenge, stepped forward. “We’re not here just for gold. We seek hope for our village and a way to honor our families.”
Finn’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. “Hope, ye say? A rare wish indeed. But first, prove your courage! I shall cast a riddle, and if ye can unravel it, the gold and the blessing it brings will be yours.”
The leprechaun’s riddle danced in the shadows, leading them through a series of challenges that pushed the boundaries of their friendship and courage. The first task required Maeve to climb a perilous staircase, her heart racing as stones slipped beneath her feet. With every step, she recalled her father’s stories of bravery, igniting a fierce light within her.
Meanwhile, Liam faced his own trial—a room filled with mirrors, each reflecting his nagging insecurities. As he battled illusions of inadequacy, he drew strength from Maeve’s unwavering support, reminding him of who he could become rather than who he was.
Finally, the trials culminated in an ancient chamber, where they found themselves facing a booming tempest of raging emotions manifesting as dark shadows. Maeve and Liam, standing side by side, realized that the only way to conquer their fears was through their bond – a friendship forged through trials, laughter, and shared dreams.
As they faced the tempest together, Maeve shouted, “No matter what happens, we stand together!” Liam echoed her sentiment, and in that moment of unity, their courage shone brightly, dispelling the shadows. The room filled with golden light, and Finn, watching from a corner, couldn’t help but smile.
“Well done, fearless children! You’ve unraveled the riddle of heart and spirit!” Finn exclaimed, his voice warm and inviting. With a wave of his hand, he invited them forward, revealing the shimmering pot of gold.
But more than wealth glittered in front of them; it was the essence of their strength and the hope they yearned for—a blessing that their village would feel for generations. They had earned much more than coins; they had ignited a spirit of resilience and courage.
As dawn broke, Maeve and Liam exited Gortnloc Castle, the golden light behind them hinting at new beginnings. They knew that while the treasure was tangible, the true wealth lay in their friendship and the hope they would share with their loved ones.
On St. Patrick’s Day, as the village celebrated with laughter and stories, the tales of Maeve, Liam, and the cunning leprechaun would be passed down, brightening hearts for years to come.

Irish-American Heritage Month
This March, in recognition of Irish-American Heritage Month (which has been celebrated since 1991), we are sharing with you the naturalization documents and brief biography of Jeremiah (Jerry) Connolly.  He is but one of the millions of Irish immigrants who came to the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Tumblr media
Jerry was born in Glengarriff in County Cork, Ireland, on July 22nd in either 1886 or 1896, depending on the source.  He sailed on the SS Cedric and arrived on the shores of the United States on May 12, 1907.  According to the 1910 census, Jerry was living with his brother in Jerome, Arizona, where he filed a declaration of intention to become a U.S. citizen.
Tumblr media
He then moved to Los Angeles where he married his wife, May O. Gorman, in 1925.  Jerry and May had three children, Marie, John, and Peggy Ann.  They settled in Tujunga, California, where they owned and operated a billiards hall next door to their home on Foothill Boulevard.  Jerry filed a second declaration of intention in 1942 and finally became a U.S. citizen on December 22, 1944.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun facts: About 10% of U.S. residents claim Irish ancestry and it is estimated that as many as 4.5 million Irish immigrants arrived in America between 1820 and 1930.
In our holdings at the National Archives at Riverside, we have over a million petitions for naturalization from southern California, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
[Some of these documents were retrieved from Ancestry.com.]
Series: Petitions for Naturalization, 1887 - 1991. Record Group 21: Records of District Courts of the United States, 1685 - 2009. (National Archives Identifier 594890).

Glengarriff, Co. Cork
This little resort, tucked away in a beautiful glen on Bantry Bay, is quite simply a jewel. The Gulf Stream, which keeps the weather in this part of Ireland surprisingly mild, has been especially kind to Glengarriff, allowing subtropical vegetation to flourish here as almost nowhere else in northern Europe. Here you can hole up for a couple of days in one of the several comfortable hotels and guesthouses scattered about the village, and indulge yourself with unhurried walks around the bay – to Lady Bantry’s Lookout and the Eagle's Nest beyond, for instance – or just laze in the mild, warm sunshine on the beach at Biddy's Cove. One must for every visitor is a trip to the remarkable gardens at Ilnacullin, or Garinish Island, which were constructed about 50 years ago by John Annan Bryce. When you see the exotic vegetation growing in fabulous luxuriance here – fuchsias up to 25 feet high, for example, and plants and shrubs from as far away as the Himalayas, Amazonia, and Asia – you'll never believe that every speck of dirt on this once-barren island had to be imported from the mainland. There are Japanese and alpine gardens, an Italian garden clustered around a rectangular lilly pool massed with flowers, and a Greek temple, all framing magnificent views of the bay; a lookout tower stands at the summit of the island. Among the island's eminent visitors was George Bernard Shaw, who wrote part of Saint Joan here.
Farther afield, but easily reached from Glengarriff, is the Beara Peninsula, as beautiful as the famous Ring of Kerry nearby, but much quieter. A circular signposted tour takes you around the mountainous, 30-mile-long peninsula and through the stunning Healy Pass. Near Castletownbere is the ruined Dunboy Castle – the last stronghold of the Irish rebellion of 1602 – and there are excellent beaches near here and farther down the peninsula at Ballydonegan. All in all, a perfect way to spend a couple of days.
Details: Glengarriff (pop. 250) is 68 miles west of Cork and can be reached by bus from there. Garinish Island, reached by ferry from the town, is open from March 1 to October 31 from 9:45 to 5:30 Monday through Saturday and from 12:45 to 6 on Sunday.

Island Gardens of Garnish, Bantry Bay, Southwest Ireland.
The final, and one of my favourite, stops of our South Western Ireland trip was the beautiful Garnish Island- reached by a short ferry trip from the village of Glengarriff, overlooking the waters of Bantry Bay and set against the back drop of the Caha Mountains. Garnish island extends to 37 acres and is renowned for its gardens which flourish in the mild humid micro climate of Glengarriff…
