So I did some sleuthing because it was such an interesting detail to me (credit to @memes-saved-me for the transcript!) , and the scene in question is actually from a short lived superhero fantasy sci-fi drama called Misfits of Science. You can read all about it here or actually watch the bit here (time stamp 7:37-7:55). But what I think is really fucking interesting is:

It's a show about a group of super-powered humans who are put together by the main character Dr. Billy Hayes, who doesn't have powers but is interested in "human anomalies"

One blog characterizes him specifically as "When put in a tight situation Billy schmoozes and tries to talk his way out of it- though it doesn't always work." They also say "He also has a sensitive nature that is usually covered up by the outgoing and pushy part of his personality," having had a teacher who "remembers Billy as being "a real pain". She says she caught him selling test answers to the other boys – something Billy doesn't recall doing," and most interesting to me, "He has very vivid dreams of different realities"

The character he's talking to is one of the super-human members of the team, Gloria (get this, her powers are telekinetic). They have a rocky relationship, with their first interaction ending with her ripping a sink off of a wall and throwing it at his head. However, they come to be close friends, to the point that she stands up for him when he gets arrested.

Some other fun coincidences:

Some of the other main characters are Elvin "El" Lincoln, who is shy and struggles connecting with people and Miss Nance, who is the scientists' secretary, and Johnny Bukowski, a rock-n-roll musician who has electrical powers and is forced to live in isolation because of them.

When I started researching the show, I actually ended up watching the 13th episode "Center of Attention" which is about El going undercover in a basketball team to spy on the owner, and at the end of the episode he makes the game winning shot as the buzzer rings.

Though I can't find any confirmation, based on the shots I've seen outside, it seems to take place in California.

Twisted Truth - Luigi’s Mansion 3 Fanfic

The whirring of Machinery, static Noises of Light and the occasional Chit-Chatting between some Ghosts echoed throughout the Laboratory that belonged to a certain little Ghost Researcher, who was currently researching something on his Computer.

17 Spectras were given the Duty of protecting valuable as well as important Elevator Buttons that were handed out to them away from a green clothed Plumber.  “He’s a malicious Ghosthunter who wants to stuff you into Paintings.”, as they were told. Most of them have put up a Fight against said Menace but were captured by him in the End regardless, including another Ghoul that was being deployed into one of the dome-shaped Capsules at the Moment, prominent by the all to familiar humming Sound that the trapped Souls got used to after a While.

“Gloria!”, the muscular Swimmer beside her called out, knocking a few Times on the Glass to get her Attention. He in Return got a sheepish Wave from her, her other Hand readjusting the Wig she was wearing on her Head as it got a little bit messed up during the Exchange Process.

“Yeah, I... sadly got captured. The Plumber’s got some groovy Moves however, I tell ya that.”

For a few Minutes, the ghostly Residents exchanged many Words between them, which however died down after a While, as there was seemingly nothing to discuss about anymore. That is however until the quiet Pianist took Note of something.

“Kruller, you seem to be pondering about something. What is on your Mind, if I may ask?”

Upon hearing his named being mentioned, the ghostly Cop snapped out of his deep Thoughts, resulting him glancing around in a confused Manner for a few Seconds before he turned towards Amadeus.

“Ah, I- it’s just-... n-nothing, really...”, he stammered out, his Hand shakingly fixing his Sunglasses. Even though he was one of the few Ghosts who got caught early on, he seemed still shaken up about it.

“Are you sure it is nothing? It appeared as if something is troubling your Mind, at least so it did to me.”, the ghostly Pianist calmly explained while having one Arm behind his back and gesturing with the other.

“Uhm, well...”

For a Moment, Kruller hesitated, but he quickly collected himself.

“Isn’t... it weird? All of this?”

“What do you mean, Dearie?”, a sweet Voice beside him suddenly chimed in. Apparently, the Conversation between the Cop and the Pianist has gotten the Attention of the ghostly Maid.

“I mean, what I’m- uhm... what I’m going to say next may sound strange, but... I don’t believe that the Plumber that Miss Gravely t-told us about is as evil as she makes him out to be...”

Upon noticing that some confused Stares were aimed towards him, his Voice went quieter at the last few Words, as some Sweatdrops were building on his Forehead again.

“Elaborate, please.”, the ghoulish Pianist told the ghostly Cop, his Eyebrows furrowing a little bit.

“I just mean- I mean, look at him. Miss Hellen told us that we potentionally have to face off against an evil Baddie who along a malicious Scientist wants to lock us into P-Paintings and keep us trapped in them forever. However, when I-I watched him through the Cameras from Time to Time, even encountered him-... all I saw was a scared and frightened Human, p-perhaps... lost even...” 

At this Point, every Spectra’s Attention was turned towards the nervous Mall Cop, quietly listening to him explain.

“Lad, Ah fought against Enemies that wanted me dead when Ah was alive, regardless if they were wetting their Pants or not. Just 'cause he was frightened doesn’t mean that he's innocent or that he doesn’t have any ill Intentions.”, a booming Voice that had an scottish Accent to it suddenly broke the Silence that had built itself around the Room just mere Seconds ago.

“Actually... I-I think I have to agree with Kruller in this Case. For someone who is supposed to be ‘a scary and vicious Ghosthunter who wants us locked away forever’, he appeared quite hesitant with attacking me, at least for the first few Moments. Not only that, but we have been trapped inside of these Capsules for Hours now instead of these terrifying Paintings that were mentioned.”, the thin Bellhop chimed in out of the blue as he folded his Arms, him seemingly pondering about something as well.

“Erm, t-that’s not the only Thing, though... P-please take a Look at that Capsule that stands besides Dr. Potter and Ug.”

As everybody turned towards the transparent Device, it turned out that said Capsule was empty.

“N-now look at all of us. Which one of us is missing?”

Thinking about it, everybody eventually came to the same Conclusion.

Morty.

“That is indeed weird. Where is he?”, the green Gardener scratched the Back of his Head, as he was puzzled as to what could have happened to the Movie Director.

Raising his Cap slightly with his gloved Hand, the ghostly Hillbilly decided to throw his own Argument into the Round.

“Well, maybe dat good ol’ Pipsqueak of a Plumber jus’ snatch'd dat shiny Button right out of our dear and beloved Director’s Hands when he wasn’t lookin. After dat, he jus’ left him ’lone to do his own lil’ Thing.”

“B-but don’t you realize something?”

Kruller was now staring at Clem, hoping that he would understand what he was trying to get across.

“It means that the supposed ‘malicious’ Ghosthunter and his little Scientist Friend wasn’t out to capture all of us like we were told and previously had assumed, else Morty would be here with us at this very Moment.”, Serpci exclaimed as the Revelation suddenly came to her Mind.

“Exactly! A-and besides that-”, once again, the intruiged Glances were being directed at the ghostly Cop, “- I-I think there’s something else I noticed...”

Timidly adjusting his Sunglasses as they slipped off a little bit before, he voiced the other Realization he made out aloud to everyone.

“E-every Ghost, i-inside this Hotel, us included, behaved much more... how should I say this... ‘agitated’ or ‘aggressive’ than usual...”

The ghostly Residents quietly looked at each other. Now that Kruller mentioned it, the ghoulish Inhabitants of this Place did indeed act out much more strangely as of lately.

“T-take Steward for Example. Remember when we talked about the Encounter we had with the Ghosthunter?” 

“Yes, I did.”, the red clothed Bellhop answered while staring at the purple Cop.

“Y-you said that you threw the Luggage inside the Garage at him when he fought against you, right?”

“You did what now?”, the sweet Voice that the undead Maid carried turned into a much more shocked Tone upon hearing this sort of Information.

“I know that you work a lot and are probably under a lot of Stress, but it isn’t like you to suddenly act out like this, Dearie!”

“Well, I... I don’t know what came over me. I just saw the Luggage and my Mind instinctively went ‘throw it at the Plumber’.”

This Time, some concerned as well as worried Glances were shared around the Group.

“A-and you, Chambrea. Please tell us how your Encounter went again.”

“I was peacefully cleaning the Room and saw a pretty Suitcase, but the green Ghosthunter appeared out of nowhere all of the sudden. Out of Panic, I... swallowed the Suitcase and fled the Scene...”

A slight Blush crept across the Maid’s Face as some murmuring from others could be heard. Meanwhile, Kruller decided to explain his Part of the Story, and at the End he finally turned towards the ghostly Chef beside him.

“Well, I was cooking in ze Kitchen as usual, until ze Plumber and his weird Doppelganger suddenly broke into it, which caused me to drop my Dish and.... suddenly lash out... at zem...”

At first, the orange Cook was confidently telling his Part of the Story, but his Voice dropped as soon as Realization dawned on him and he uncomfortably rubbed his Neck.

“Mister Wolfgeist, do you may want to continue?”, Chambrea calmly asked him, however Worry was now stretched over her Face.

“I was playing on my Piano, until that green Plumber walked into the Auditorium. I thought I could ignore him and simply just throw some Chairs at him to scare him off, but he turned out to be much more persistent than what I had previously assumed him to be. After that, he captured some Goobs, causing my Concentration to be thrown off and ulimately leading me to become really mad at him. In a Fit of Rage and Attempt to finally get rid of him, I... possessed my Piano and tried to slam it into him... destroying it in the Process...”

The well known nonchalant Expression that the Pianist carried on his Face was suddenly replaced with that of Dread, as he slowly looked down upon his Hands.

“Um Himmels Willen... what in Lord’s Name just came over me...”

On and on the Explanations went, with most Ghosts expressing the Feelings of Regret and Guilt as well as that of Unease and Concern along the Way and everybody making Revelation after Revelation.

“Just what the Hell is going on?”, Johnny blurted out while holding his Hands against his Head, as the current Situation admittedly made him more and more anxious as well as puzzled.

The DJ next to him tried to talk to the ghostly Swimmer in order to calm him down: “Johnny, Sweetie, please chill out. I’m sure we can find out what exactly is going on!”

“I be sure that Hellen be behind all o' this! I swear on me other Eye!”

“Miss Gravely? Why would you think that she would do something like this?”, Dr. Potter questioned the aquatic Pirate while adjusting his Glasses.

As every Soul was beginning to get into a heated Argument, including Ug who only was able to speak Gibberish, the ghostly Maid noticed that the Bellhop beside her was starting to act more nervously.

“Steward, Dearie, is everything alright?”

“...’s all my Fault...”, he mumbled in a tense Manner, his Sentence being barely audible, and he anxiously rubbed his Arms.

“Steward?-”

“It’s all my Fault!”, he blurted out all of the sudden, causing the Discussions between the Spectras to come to a Halt and look at him.

“How is this your Fault? You can’t be behind all of this, now can you?”

Crossing his Arms, Amadeus proceeded to stare at Steward questioningly, like he was trying to knock some Sense into the Bellhop for even bringin up such Claim.

“A-apologies, Stress got over me again. It’s just... I could have maybe prevented this and I’m blaming myself for it.”

The ghostly Cop gave him a sympathetic Glance and spoke up: “How so?”

“All of you perhaps heard about how a special Guest came to the Last Resort to visit us, correct? King Boo, as I recall. Before he arrived here, everything was running pretty smoothly and-”

“So ya think it was him?-”

Promptly, the ghoulish Pianist held up a Hand towards the pink Electrician.

“Clem, let Steward finish, it is rude to interrupt him when he wasn’t finished talking.”

“M’sorry.”

Clearing his Throat, the blue Spectra continued: “As I said, everything was pretty normal. That is until I went onto Miss Gravely’s Floor to retrieve the Elevator Buttons as well as Instructions and hand them out to you...”

He stopped for a Moment and grabbed at his Bowtie slightly, but collected himself and proceeded with his Story.

“No matter where I looked, there were Sculpures as well as Painting of this particular Guest everywhere. I... I think I even caught some Glimpses of Merchandise of him... Gee, I-I should have warned all of you and talked about it after all of what I have seen instead of keeping it to myself. In Hindsight, it was definitely a red Flag and certainly not normal...”

Some disturbed Expressions where exchanged in the Round, until MacFrights finally spoke up.

“So ya think a small wittle Boo who calls himself a ‘King’ could’ve done all of tis?”

“It wasn’t a small Boo, far from it! He was far bigger than Miss Gravely, his Appereance was much more different as well as menacing than that of a regular Boo and he wore a Crown with a Gem on it!”

“A Gem?”

The intruiged Queen chimed in as her yellow Eyes stared into those of Steward’s.

“Yes, a giant purple one.”

“Hmm, you’re definitely onto something then.”

In a Matter of Seconds, the entire Attention was now focused solely on Serpci.

“When I was alive, I was told Stories about how Kings and Queens amongst the Lands would use Gems that contained great Powers within them to rule over their respected Kingdoms. Even in todays Era, Tales of Folks using these particular Gems to harvest their powerful Abilities and utilizing them to their Advantages still make the Rounds.”, she recalled to the Group, one Hand resting against her Cheek while the other supported her Elbow.

“Of course!”

Ths Time, everybody turned their Heads towards the Capsule that contained the Triplets, since one of them, Ginny to be precise, seemingly remembered something.

“It has to be Mind-Controlling Magic that he’s using against us! Me and my Sisters know about a Tale that took present inside of the Evershade Valley a long Time ago. A Being with powerful Abilities apparently was able to use Mind-Controlling Magic against the Ghosts that reside there in said Area. We were so impressed an fascinated by that Story that we even have a small Replica of the Gloomy Manor inside an Aquarium in one of our Rooms!”

“So-”, Soulfflé kneaded his Temples, “if I’m understanding zis correctly, all of zis Trouble is happening because our dear Hotelowner has an Obsession over a big oversized Marshmallow who decided to trick and manipulate the entire Hotel? Just great...”

Even though it was pretty apparent what was going on, there were still some unanswered Questions that lingered in the Air.

“But what Reason would they have to bring a Ghosthunter here out of all Places, let alone send him after all of us? It just doesn’t make any Sense in my Head!”

Seeing Gloria getting so frustrated, Clem let out a tiny Snicker followed by a sarcastic Comment while he casually leaned back in his Rubber Duckie Floatie that he was lying on.

“Before ya totally break yer Head over such complicated Question, why don’‘t cha ask the Lady who’s behind all of this hersel-”

A familiar humming Noise once again echoed throughout the Room, interrupting the undead Electrician in his Speech, and every trapped Soul turned their Head towards the Source of the Commotion.

A certain ghostly Hotelowner with her beloved Pet was deployed into one of the Capsules this Time.

This was going to be one long an interesting Discussion.

A/N - So I thought I’d make a little character list before I start writing because there are large families involved, and it may get confusing!

It’s still written in second person (you) but the reader has a name, and a backstory. The reader is French - and has a French name. This will make a bit more sense with the plot hopefully!

You sat in the dim light of the kitchen, a cigarette dangling from your lips, a crease pulling your forehead together. Your hands shook a little as they gripped the letter in front of you. The worry you’d been hiding for months started to build up, like a monster taunting you.

You glanced towards the jar on the windowsill - an idea your mother had created. When she or your father were paid, and they’d paid all the bills, they’d put the left over cash in there. It was for little things - like new shoes or toys for the younger siblings, or books for you. You had tried your best to keep that going now your mother was no longer here, and your Papa was sick, but your wage couldn’t even stretch over the bills. The jar was most pitifully empty. Not one penny lay in the bottom , and you ran a hand through your tangled hair, pulling out the remaining pins that were still tangled in from your shift late last night.

The door, the front one, banged open all of a sudden, and you jumped, a small shriek elicited from your mouth, until you saw the gaggle of people who crowded down the hall - your younger siblings, and two others. You couldn’t stop a smile coming on your face as you saw John, his little brother Finn hanging off his back, holding a paper plane you’d made him a few days ago. Gisèle, as per usual, was looking up at your best friend with adoration in her eyes. Sometimes, you wondered if you looked like that when you stared at him.

You pushed the letter under a few books. You would figure it out later.

“Nessy!” Your youngest sibling - Eddie, was gripping on tightly to Leo’s shirt, almost like a Koala, as Leo stuffed something into his pocket, a bit of material, or clothing. You paid no mind to it. Leo kept secrets - it was just what he was like.

“Hey, baby!” You almost crooned, took over from your brother, holding Eddie, wiping off some food of some kind from his chubby cheeks.

Your siblings cleared off remarkably fast - Gisèle sneaking off with one of your nurses aprons, most probably to play dress up, Monty to read a comic John had most probably bought him, and Leo mumbling something about going to see your dad.

“Thanks for looking after them today, Johnny.” You grinned at your friend, kissing his cheek in a way of greeting. His face was warm, despite the chilly spring weather outside. You felt you face warm too, at your action, though not in the same way as his, you were sure.

“Was mostly Pol, to be fair.” He replied, smiling, flopping into one of your worn kitchen chairs, expertly avoiding the wobbly one.

“I’m not so sure about that. It’s you they love, more than any of us. Mr God like Shelby.” You joked, laughing. Truly, you loved that your siblings adored the Shelby’s. you knew that if anything should ever happen to you, they would step in and help, and that meant a lot. Especially considering the cloud of death that seemed to follow your family.

“You still coming tomorrow, then?” He questioned, pulling the newspaper on the table towards him, scanning the front page, as he kicked off his shoes. The scene was almost like a little family,you three in the tiny kitchen , and you smiled a little, before pushing the thought out of your brain.

“‘Course, nine isn’t it?” You questioned, pulling plates out of the cupboards.

Tomorrow was , of course , John’s eighteenth birthday, and whilst he didn’t seem that bothered about it exactly, he , and the rest of his family, never turned down an opportunity to spend exorbitant amounts of money on alcohol, and get completely piss drunk. You couldn’t deny that you were looking forward to it, quite a lot.

He nodded yes, in confirmation, but you could see his mind was focused on the paper in front of him.

“Got my present yet, then?” He grinned, cheekily, looking up at you.

“Present? Why would I get you a present?” You deadpanned, before smiling teasingly.

He put on his best wounded face - all wide eyes and pouty lips- before you both sniggered.

You had gotten him a present, obviously, had every year since you were both nine, when you moved to England from France. It was one of the only times you got to show your appreciation for him - he wasn’t particularly a boy who liked to be thanked. Not really. Not by you. As he’d told you a thousand time’s by now, you were kin to him. Practically a sister. He didn’t care about looking out for you.

You tried to pretend that those statements didn’t make your heart ache, just a little. Practically a sister.

He went quiet again, his grin disappearing a little, returning to the front page - something to do with France and Germany that you didn’t quite understand. Did anyone , at this point?

“There’s going to be a war, isn’t there?” You said quietly, as to not let anyone hear - aside from Eddie, who didn’t understand anyway, dishing up food onto the plates.

He paused for a moment.

“Probably.”

“But we’ll be fine right? It doesn’t have anything to do with us?”

Why you expected him to know the answers, you didn’t know. But it was your default. When worried, ask John. Well, it was with most things. The letter practically burning a hole in your table was quite a different matter.

Another pause.

“Nah. We’ll be fine.” Except, he didn’t sound so sure. And neither were you.

Several hours later, you smoothed down your skirt - wearing your best ‘I’m very responsible and I promise to give you the rent soon’ kind of dress - after you knocked smartly on your landlords door.

It wasn’t that different to yours - all peeling white paint and chipped paint - though this flat was the ground floor, and yours was several flights of stairs up.

The door swung open not many moments later, quickly. You supposed Geoff Wilson - your landlord - didn’t have much to do anymore. According to your neighbour, Gloria, who was lovely, even though she was a right gossip, Geoff had divorced his wife a few months back, and seemed to have a permanent chip on his shoulder after that. He wasn’t too much older than you - perhaps around twenty three - and you had to admit you felt sorry for him. He had last his father last year, and since then, had taken over as landlord. You supposed he was slightly less of a prat than his dad, who would threaten eviction if the rent was two seconds late.

“Hi, Mr Wilson.” You tried to smile warmly, but your cheeks felt stiff. The letter - one about the rent - was cluctched in your slightly shaking hands.

“Ah, Miss ...”

You were never quite sure if he didn’t know your name, or simply couldn’t pronounce it.

“Inés. Inés Derouin.” You supplied. “Flat 23?”

“Ah yes. The late rent ones-“

“I’m so dreadfully sorry about that.” You hated kissing peoples arses. “But I was just wondering if I could have a few more days? By Friday, I can have the rent-“

“That would mean I would have to wait over a week-“

“I know, and I’m sorry, it’s just with my Papa-“

“Miss Derouin, I’m sorry about your family situation, but that doesn’t change the fact that I need my money.” He didn’t sound all that sorry.

“Look, is there anything I can do? I just need a few more days.” Your voice was desperate and you hated it.

He sighed, paused for a few moments, then an almost smile came into his face.

“There is something, actually.”

Oh god, you hoped he didn’t think you were offering those type of favours-

“Come to a dinner party with me.”

“A dinner party?” It was such a strange request.

“Yes. As I’m sure you’ve heard from the incessant gossiping around this building, I’ve divorced from my wife, and she will be attending, with her new... boyfriend, and I really wish to not make a fool of myself by going alone.” His voice was almost bored.

“Okay. When?”

“Tomorrow. I’ll pick you up around 8:30 ish?”

Your face dropped.

“Is there not anything else?” You asked weakly. John’s smiling face flickered in your brain - you couldn’t miss his birthday.

You knew there wasn’t.

His eyebrow raised. “If you cant come-“

If you can’t come, you’ll get evicted.

“It’s fine. I’ll sort it out.” You smiled, but it fell from your face almost immediately as you turned round after a soft goodbye.

You exhaled, running your hand through your hair. And you couldn’t even go see him tomorrow - you were working. Guilt poooled in your stomach. You’d just fake some type of bug. He’d understand.

Of course he would. But it didn’t make you feel any less miserable about it.

The night wasn’t as bad as you had thought it would be, you mused, as you and Geoff neared the apartment building, his jacket draped over your shoulders. He wasn’t as much of an arse as you had previously thought - and you had almost had fun , dancing , and drinking cocktails (which, you had thought with a pang, weren’t nearly as good as Ines at the Garrison), and being flared at by his ex-wife all night. If looks could kill, Geoff had joked, you’d be a pile of ash by now.

But you still couldn’t get rid of the guilt that festered in you all evening, one that kept making your hands tremble, and eyes well with tears that you blinked away. How could you have done anything differently, though? You couldn’t prioritise John over your family, as much as it pained you.

Geoff lit a cigarette next to you, inhaling on the smoke.

“Thankyou for tonight, Ness.” He called you by your nickname - one you had told him to call you, but it didn’t sound right coming from his lips.

“No problem. I enjoyed it.” You smiled at each other, small smiles , that indicated that this wouldn’t happen again , but it was good while it lasted.

It was only when you were almost at the entrance of the building, when you saw him. Standing, leaning against the wall, cigar smoke exuding from his lips, his hair tousled slight. Lipstick on his collar. That made your smile drop even more than when you first saw him - you had been well and truly caught out in your lie. You swallowed slightly, slowing to a stop.

Geoff froze for a second, then uttered a mumbled goodbye, walking fast into the building. Of course, he was just as afraid of the Blinder’s as anyone else in Small Heath. He’d scurried off so quick, he’d left his jacket, still wrapped around your shoulders.

“John-“ You began quietly, walking closer towards him, eyes wide.

“How’s your cough, Ness?” He said coldly - referring to the call you had made to him several hours ago, telling him you were too sick to come to his party.

“John, just let me explain-“ You said quietly - teaching for his hand, which he snatched away.

“Explain what? You know, I was worried about you. I missed half of my fucking party, coming to see if you were alright, for your dad to answer the door, and tell me you’d gone out-“

“It isn’t what it looks like-“

“Really? Cause to me it looks like you just valued some prick of a man over me. Thought we were supposed to be mates.”

That voice, that damn voice. Emotionless, which hit you the most. You’d never heard him like this.

“You know we are.”

“Are we? Because you know what, Inés, I’ve never put anything before you. Whenever you have needed me, I’ve been here. When your dad was sick, when your mum was fucking dying-“

“Stop. That isn’t fair.” Tears began to well in your eyes, and you willed them away. It didn’t work.

He looked like he was going to stop. Just for a moment.

“What’s your excuse then?” His face was pulled into a pained, sarcastic grin.

“What do you mean?”

“What’s your grand story of why you weren’t there?”

“I’m ... I’m behind in rent. I needed an extension-“

His face screwed up, and you swore he got paler.

Villains in Love.

“That’s how we like to do drugs. Non-judgmentally.” Letterboxd talks ‘couples on the run’, moral relativism and Bill “handsome as the day is long” Skarsgård with Villains writer/directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen.

In Villains, the new thriller from Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, who wrote and directed together, we join a couple of young lovers on the run: Jules (Maika Monroe) and Mickey (Bill Skarsgård).

Their car breaks down following a gas station robbery, so they take refuge in a nearby suburban home. After making a disturbing discovery in the basement, they quickly realize they picked the wrong house. Their situation becomes drastically more perilous when the owners, the outwardly folksy George (Jeffrey Donovan) and Gloria (Kyra Sedgwick), return home and turn the tables on Mickey and Jules.

From the title on down, the darkly comedic Villains clearly wants to play with cinematic notions of what constitutes “good” and “bad” characters. Berk and Olsen are assisted in this by four actors doing great work, but Donovan (Fargo) must be singled out for such effective use of his delightfully insincere smile.

We sat down with Berk and Olsen following the film’s world premiere earlier this year at the SXSW Film Festival.

Did the concept for this film come to you first or did you start with the characters and go from there? Dan Berk (co-writer/director): I think probably the first thing, if we’re being completely honest, was a little bit more practical. We knew we wanted to make a film in a single or a limited location because our first film Body, which we had at Slamdance in 2015, we shot that entirely in one location and it was a shoestring budget, $50,000. We shot it in eleven overnights. It was really kind of insane, but we came away from that realizing that if you own a location, you can leave your gear up, get in, shoot your day, get out, come back the next morning, turn your lights on and keep shooting.

Robert Olsen (co-writer/director): And that’s a big realm that you can fit a lot of different ideas under. We were wanting to do a kind of “lovers on the run”; a couple of amateur criminals, like in the style of Bonnie and Clyde or Badlands. We had been circling that for a while and then it kind of became like, okay, well, if it is this young couple, this inept Bonnie and Clyde, what do they run into in this single location of ours? And that’s where George and Gloria came from. What if it was this bizarro, older version of themselves? Because you look at those different movies and the couples are treated differently, morally, in different ones. Like in True Romance, you’re very much sympathizing with them throughout, whereas Natural Born Killers, they get to a certain point where you’re like: oh my god, these people have problems, it’s not good. And so we were like, well, what if Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek didn’t stop at the end of Badlands and grew up—what would they be like? And wouldn’t that be funny to see these people run into the evil version of themselves?

DB: Once we had the practical location component and the characters, the thematic framework came next. This idea that was sort of obvious once we laid all the pieces out on the board, of this moral relativism. The idea that if you saw Mickey and Jules on the street, you’d go, like, oh those are the villains right? They just robbed a convenience store. Those people are not good people. And if you saw George and Gloria at the grocery store, you’d go, those are good upstanding citizens, look how nice their hair is. It’s tough really that that’s how we operate. And it’s sort of a “don’t judge a book by its cover” thing. RO: And just like how love plays into it where both couples have a genuine loving relationship. They are truly in love with one another, but it’s like, how much can your love for one another forgive the sins that you commit? And also love as this razor’s edge tightrope that you fall on to one side or the other. Are you going to be on the good side of love which drives you to be empathetic and imagine yourself in somebody else’s shoes? Or are you gonna fall on the bad side of love, which is like, obsession and letting love become a corrupting influence on you. So that was where we wound up and then we just got in there and started writing.

The film invites comparisons with previous “lovers on the run” movies, especially with Bill’s character being named Mickey (evoking Mickey and Mallory from NBK). Were you hoping that audiences would link these characters to that tradition? DB: We certainly didn’t wanna hide from it. We’re not running from the Bonnie and Clyde ancestor of this, and True Romance and Natural Born Killers and Badlands and all that stuff. We’d be delusional if we thought we invented the idea of young lovers. We wouldn’t go so far as to say the entire thing is an homage.

RO: We wanted there to be enough references that we were showing that we didn’t think we were the first people to ever have this idea, and at the same time you don’t want so many references that your movie’s just this clip show.

We hear a lot about the “contained thriller” as a genre these days. How did you feel your film would set itself apart from all the others? DB: I think it’s about the space that you’re in. Something we wanted to do differently here was get a sense of mood. We wanted the basement to feel different from the living room and feel different from the kitchen and feel different from Gloria’s room, so that the movie does not become visually repetitive.

RO: Had our resources been more limited, we might’ve been forced to do a situation where we were looking at white walls the entire time and I really don’t think the film would’ve worked had that been the case because the production design, the set decoration, buttresses this tone so effectively. I would say that if you removed that buttress, the entire tower would fall down. You can’t make this movie that exists in this slightly elevated lane above reality without the backdrops of your scenes; they need to get the memo too that we’re existing in a weird world. The dining room needs to have that fiery orange palm tree wallpaper. The other room needs to be cool blue. You would never design two rooms together like that but George and Gloria do. And it’s a signal, it’s a code to the audience that yes, this is a bit surreal.

DB: You can have a unique tone, but if you don’t establish it until 45 minutes into the movie, then you’ve failed. You need those visual markers to let you know that wallpaper’s just too perfect for this to take place in the exact same reality I live in.

Drug use in films is usually pretty didactic, but you have your protagonists take them in what feels like a non-judgmental manner here. RO: That’s how we like to do drugs. Non-judgmentally. [Laughs.]

DB: That was one of the first things we conceived at the script level because it’s so in line with that theme of moral relativism. We’re not sitting here saying eleven year olds should be doing coke, but we wanted to paint a portrait of characters that were levelled and had good intentions and you’d feel comfortable sitting and having lunch with them and talking about their lives, but you also see them doing things that are perceived by most of society as evil.

RO: It’s playing with the idea that you mentioned where normally, that is a signal to an audience member that this person is bad. That’s just not how real life works. There are people who do drugs that are perfectly good people. And yes, if your son is thirteen years old and his friend is trying to get him to do coke, that’s evil in your mind in that relative situation. But it’s not the same thing as murdering somebody. It’s not the same thing as keeping a person chained up in your basement.

DB: It was also a way to compartmentalize these characters, to show that their identities were very multi-faceted, that George could both have done incredibly evil things, but he’s doing all these things because he loves his wife and he actually is a good husband.

You’re keying into something that was really important to us: it’s so easy, and it’s part of the common language of film, to put a character in a box. You’re either a protagonist or an antagonist. You’re either an evil person or a good person. And it’s a challenge both for us as filmmakers and for an audience when they’re digesting this story, to try to carry both of those things in your head at once. “This is a character that is doing something I morally disagree with but I love them though. What’s going on here? This is making me feel weird.”

It’s interesting to see Bill Skarsgård give such an “all-American” performance here. RO: We had this idea in our head of this young Johnny Depp, this River Phoenix, late 80s/early 90s heartthrob that they just don’t make anymore, and we just couldn’t find it. And then here comes Bill. We had seen him in these sort of more genre-based roles and things like that. We’d never seen him be charming like he is in this.

DB: He’s usually the opposite of charming. Like in Castle Rock and It.

RO: As soon as we Skyped with him, we were like. that’s it! He’s got it! He’s like, long and lanky but handsome as the day is long and everything too, he’s the perfect guy.

DB: Bill takes the craft very seriously but he’ll do a [comedy] bit with us for five minutes. He’s very jokey as well. We’re in love with him. RO: And he is so built for it. He has these big eyes. He has this, like, “hot Steve Buscemi” thing going on. I’m sure he and his team discussed this and [thought] ‘you’ve got nothing else like this’. So if it’s bad or whatever, we’ll slip it under the rug, but if it’s good, who knows what this could get you? He shouldn’t just play the boogey-man. There’s a lot more to him.

DB: There’s so much more to him than the scary clown.
