What is the origin of the Autobot combiner known as Tonkanator? Why do its components all have such similar names among each other and the ones that form Devastator? Are they Autobot clones of them made through experiments?
Dear Tonka Tough Guy,
Although the Gobots successfully saved their home reality and ushered in a new era of peace and prosperity, not all the inhabitants of Gobotron were happy with this new status quo. Soon enough, the dastardly Master Renegade escaped captivity on New Earth and soon returned to his old tricks. In time, he made contact with Zero, newly-appointed leader of a small group of fanatics who’d renounced Cy-Kill after the Renegade leader abandoned his evil ways and set up a new base of operations, working out of Magmar’s abandoned fortress on Quartex.
Armed with some unique Cybertronian schematics purloined from a distant dimension, samples of cybernucleic acid, and whatever resources they could gather, the group set about creating six new Gobots—fusions of Transformer and Gobot technology, these entirely mechanical super lifeforms possessed hand blasters and the ability to fly, but their positronic brains were sustained by an artificially-induced “spark” of life. These six Renegades—modest Motor Load, put-upon Mega Hauler, destructive Mega Dozer, manic Motormix, insecure Power Digger, and the stuck-up Skyhook—inherited much from their genetic templates, including the ability to combine into a mighty, if dim-witted, form.
Zero’s Neo-Renegades attacked the Guardians during a routine goodwill mission on Quartex. The towering Tonkanator easily outpowered Leader-1’s Courageous combiner, and neither Puzzler nor Fossilsaurus could match Tonkanator’s unbridled fury. With no other options, Leader-1 and Cy-Kill were forced into an undignified retreat to lick their wounds. Fortunately, an unexpected ally presented himself: Steamer, an ex-Renegade with a construction vehicle alternate mode, believed that he could infiltrate Zero’s temporary headquarters and turn the Tonkanator Six against their creators—if nothing else, he could repay the debt that he himself owed Leader-1 and his allies when they helped him escape the Renegades. Leader-1 agreed, doubtfully, and sent Steamer on to try and reason with Motor Load and his minions. Although Motor Load initially doubted Steamer’s message of goodwill, Zero quickly realized the true nature of Leader-1’s plan and took Steamer prisoner.
Suspended over a boiling vat of molten magma, Zero and his followers broadcast a message to Leader-1, warning him that he had two hours to surrender Quartex to the Renegades or else Steamer would perish. Salvation, however, came from an unexpected source—unable to ignore the plight of a fellow construction vehicle, Motor Load and his fellows turned on their benefactors and sent the Renegades scattering; as they freed Steamer and took off, Skyhook took a moment to dismiss the Master Renegade as an “uncharismatic bore!”
In the end, Leader-1 allowed Motor Load and his fellows to join the Guardians. Together with Steamer, they now make up the “Auto-Bots”, a unique subgroup of Go-Bots who use their construction powers to assist in the rebuilding of Gobotron.

Some GoBots doodles (Transformers Rivalry stuff)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This started as a late April Fools' joke but I was too busy with other stuff to properly post them. I didn't plan to integrate them into the lore initially, but I figured out a way to put them into the series.
In this Transformers AU, the GoBots are meant to be this AU's version of the Nebulans. Due to excessive climate changes on Planet Nebulos, those on Camp Gobotron decided to build mechanical exoskeletons in the form of GoBots to survive in harsh weather after reverse engineering scraps of Cybertronian corpse debris that landed on their planet. Those in power and free were known as the Guardians, while those under the influence of the Decepticons back on Cybertron were known as the Renegades.
However, a familiar trio from each side managed to make their way to Earth and had their own adventures, all the while running into the Autobots and Decepticons from time to time.
GUARDIANS:
Leader One: The kind and noble head honcho of Camp Gobotron, a base on Nebulos.
Turbo: A macho brawler with a no-nonsense attitude
Scooter: The youngest and smallest of the team
RENEGADES:
Cy-Kill: A Gobot follower of Megatron, whom he idolizes, in which his plans carry out to vary degrees of success
Cop-Tur: A skilled security guard yet doesn't has the brightest ideas in the lot.
Crasher: Racer and earth sports enthusiast, fitted with EMP Boots that can allow her to cause destruction

Profiles in Villainy
Cy-Kill
The tyrannical Cy-Kill is a Gobot, a member of a race of living androids from the planet Gobotran.  Like other such Gobots, Cy-Kill can transform from a humanoid shape and change into the form of a vehicle; in Cy-Kill’s case he can transform into a motorcycle.
One of the more powerful Gobots, Cy-Kill was originally a member of the Guardians who protected Gobotron as well as a good friend and ally to the fellow Gobot, Leader-1.  Yet Cy-Kill was ambitious and believed that he should rule Gobotron as its undisputed lord and king.  Leader-1, however, rallied for democracy on Gobotron and Cy-Kill was ultimately banished.  The deposed Cy-Kill went on to form a group of evil Gobots known as The Renegades who sought to conquer the planet.  These Renegades were repelled by Leader-1 and the other guardians.  It would be the first of many such conflicts between the two sides.
The villain was voiced by actor Bernard Erhard and first appeared in the 1984 debut of the animated series The Challenge of The Gobots, airing on September 8th, 1984.

Wondering about Rise of the Beasts synergy atm. Age of Extinction somewhat influenced Rescue Bots and RiD15 by the inclusion of Dinobots as major characters (the Rescue Bots assuming Dinosaur beast modes while Bee’s unit would have a Dinobot that was originally a new stegosaurus character but would later become Grimlock).
The success of the first movie would’ve seen Animated’s Autobot team altered to mimic the team used in the 07 movie, like Ratchet turning green and Ironhide replacing Bulkhead, though Animated was canceled for this could take effect. (The one thing I am happy about because I wasn’t personally a fan of this change, despite being a fan of the movie and TFA.)
So I’m currently wondering how Hasbro might try similar synergy with EarthSpark. It’s been insisted by the likes of AndyUnicronus now Axiom Nexus that Optimus Primal and Megatron could appear but I’m not sure of the specifics there. My own, unlikely scenario was they’d be remnant Autobots and Decepticons from Cybertron stopping by Earth to check up on what’s happening, but Axiom offers ideas of them being Terrans to mirror the idea of Maximals typically being the descendants of the Autobots.
Rumors with RotB as of typing suggest the Maximals are from a dead colony planet (the Jungle Planet but take your pick if it’s called something like Animatros, Eukaris, Biosfera or Energoa) that escaped the Terrorcons’ wrath and settled on Earth in its prehistory until the Autobots met them in the 90’s. Optimus Primal appearing as a colonist feels more likely, but I don’t know if that would over complicate EarthSpark’s mostly simple narrative by including other Transformer colonies (as much as I would like to see it and the resulting culture clash).
I feel like though the easiest to implement would be Mirage and the Terrorcons for now though. Mirage is easy enough, he’s a young Autobot about Bumblebee’s age, has sort of a spoiled rich kid personality that’s thoroughly fed up with their Earth vacation but when the chips are down, comes through for the Autobots and Maltobots. He’s successful at hiding from GHOST because of his mastery of holograms and invisibility, and performs tricks to entertain the Malto kids and Terrans. I can see his arc being similar to Rescue Bots Blurr where he comes out of hiding and crashes with the Maltos for awhile, and he learns to become less selfish and more of a team player overtime.
The Terrorcons, similar to the film, are the Decepticon replacement, though instead of being minions of Unicron, they’d preferably be a splinter faction that resumed the Decepticon Empire out in space, coming to Earth to conquer it or just blow it the skrud up if it comes to it. Alternatively they could be akin to the mostly scrapped Star Seekers, Transformers mad at other Transformers enough that they’re blowing up colony worlds for “reasons”, and now Earth is the latest one in their sights (after that Gobotron and Skalor!). Scourge would still be the leader, but I’m not sure if Battletrap or Nightbird would be included in this scenario, since I don’t know if EarthSpark would whip out Nightbird as a hidden Decepticon instead (though would she be a Cadillac like Arcee since the modern trend is to repaint her from Arcee…). Whoever would make up the team, I feel strongly there should be some Beast Mode guys in there. Preferably some more Beast Wars characters, but G1 guys like Squeezeplay or Horri-Bull would fit well here. So would Skullcruncher but uh, he’s already here lol.

Transformers Warfare: Magnus (Rank)
The title of Magnus is one worthy of dignity and respect. Often considered to be the second highest rank achievable within the Autobots, just below "Prime", the mere mention of a Magnus on any given battlefield is enough to strike fear in many a Decepticon. To be worthy of such a rank, one needs to be courageous, tough, and compassionate. Many bots have tried to become a Magnus, but few have succeeded.
Known Magni
Ultra Magnus
Possibly the most famous among the Magni is Ultra Magnus, leader of the Wreckers, an elite group of some of the toughest soldiers within the Autobot ranks. Ultra Magnus is one of Optimus Prime's oldest friends, having known each other from the Autobot leaders' days as Orion Pax.
Arcana Magnus
Little is known about this Magnus, aside from her similarity in both color scheme and demeanor towards the Autobot Arcee, leading some to suspect that Arcana is a counterpart to her from an alternate timeline or universe. She is a recluse, preferring to keep hidden on the spider-infested planet of Archa Seven. If this is actually an Arcee counterpart, whatever happened to her to make so unwilling to go against the Decepticons anymore - not to mention her techno-organic spider mode - is a mystery, one few Autobots are willing to uncover.
Leader Magnus
Formerly known as "Leader-1", Leader Magnus is the commander of the Autobot subfaction, The Guardians. The Guardians were originally an Autobot equivalent birthed from a similar Great War on the Cybertronian colony planet of Gobotron, until the planet was destroyed by said warfare and much of the population was decimated. Now a Magnus within the Autobot ranks, Leader looks to keep the rest of his friends alive, and perhaps correct his past mistakes which lead to his home planet's death.
Skyhammer Magnus
One of the few flight capable Autobots who is neither a Triple Changer nor affiliated with the Aerialbots, Skyhammer Magnus is a powerful yet graceful warrior. Although he and his team have spent much time exploring the galaxy, searching for supplies, species to aid, or stray Decepticon outposts to take down, news of Team Prime's location on Earth has drawn them to the planet... just in time too.
Elita-1
Although she doesn't use the Magnus title - Elita Magnus just sounds pretentious - Elita-1 still very much qualifies as one, and is often eager to show Decepticons why that is. Strong and capable, she acts as Optimus Prime's second in command on Earth, having left command of her previous unit to...
Splendid Magnus
Splendid Magnus is a courageous and honorable leader, unafraid to make the hard decisions. Formerly the SIC to Elita-1 in the all-femme attack squad Shield of Solus, Splendid was granted both the rank of Magnus and command of the team when Elita left Cybertron with Optimus.
Delta Magnus
The leader of the Primal Vanguard, Delta Magnus and his team were once some of the best soldiers in the Autobot army. Unfortunately, an attack from the Decepticon Heavy Brigade left a large number of them dead, Delta included. The left over members would reform under the leadership of Grimlock as the Lightning Strike Coalition, then later the Dinobots.
Pyra Magna
Though she doesn't follow conventional naming schemes, Pyra Magna of Caminus is every bit a Magnus as everyone else with the name thanks to her relentlessness and ambition. Much like Splendid Magnus and Elita-1 previously, Pyra leads an all-femme team known as the Torchbearers, which can combine into Victorion. Although the team is more suited for and accustomed to collection and preservation of ancient Cybertronian artifacts, one can always count on Pyra and her "Rust Renegades" to come to their aid, should she hear their cry.
Maximal Magnus
A close friend to the Camien Windblade, Maximal Magnus was a virtuous Autobot of great leadership capabilities. Unfortunately, virtue was not enough to save her from deactivation. When she travelled to Eukaris to negotiate and trade for supplies, she was ambushed by the newly formed Predacons, inspired by the Decepticon Preditron. Maximal Magnus sacrificed her life to save her team and a small group of Eukarians, but in doing so left her team leaderless. However, her sacrifice inspired a new faction to rally up and stop the new threat, using the first half of her name as their moniker. Her group, meanwhile, has found new leadership, though they will never forget their first leader.

In them you will learn that Crasher was originally intended to be male, while Spoiler was female. Scanned and printed on the Roboplastic Apocalypse page are transcriptions of the biographies Tonka made for the original '84 lineup of GoBot toys in an industry toy catalog.
#GOBOT CRANE SERIES#
While the GoBots toys mostly lacked any type of biography, it was uncovered that Tonka did try to created personalities for the GoBots before the Challenge of the GoBots TV series aired. One of the things that set Transformers apart from GoBots back in 1984 was the wonderful biographies and tech specs included on Transformers toys. Check out this tidbit of GoBots (and by extension Transformers) history. Today GoBots have been absorbed into Transformers as minor background characters, club exclusive characters and the occasional odd homage.

#GOBOT FIGURE TOYBOX PLUS#
It feels like something you would have to cover up with a scratch n’ sniff sticker of a pickle to avoid a call to your parents. For some reason though I imagine teachers having a problem with your pencil pouch boldly displaying the word “KILL” on it. Granted it didn’t actually change into the jet, but it was still way more fun than walking up to the crank handle sharpener bolted above a trashcan in the classroom. Kids were always looking for a way to bring toys to school and what better way than a pencil sharpener in the shape of a transforming robot jet. I wonder if he would hang out with Fearless Photog from the Masters of the Universe create a character contest? "Film-Bot" would have been a hit for me at playtime. My solution as a child would definitely have been to build a robot body out of Construx and then rubber band this camera to the top as a head. But maybe they were banking on children being excited to have, “A real camera just like mommy’s and daddy’s”. While it may have been fun to take some pictures of your GoBots toys assembled on the floor of your bedroom, it’s kind of a letdown. It’s just a camera with some stickers on it. Unlike the previous item, this licensed GoBots camera does not transform into a “Mighty Robot”. Likely stored in a humid garage for years, this machine has melted gumballs in the bottom, yuck! The only poor production choice I feel is selling the thing with the gumballs pre-loaded.
#GOBOT FIGURE TOYBOX PLUS#
The other plus was that if a kid’s fascination with GoBots faded as they got older, they could easily leave the dispenser in jet mode while playing “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins on their stereo and live that Top Gun life. Not only were you getting a gumball dispenser, but a bank and a toy all in one! The idea of bringing one home always appealed to me, but I was usually imagining one of the standard red metal and glass globe models on a stand. I don’t know about you, but nothing was cooler to my 4 year old self than gumball machines. So today, let’s look back at some of the non-robot products that carried the GoBots name in our local drug stores. Tonka seemingly did everything right with GoBots, releasing toys at multiple price points, with Hanna-Barbera to create stories and characters, even licensing plenty of tie-in merchandise not directly related to the toy line. The truth is, Leader-1 and the GoBotronians debuted weeks before the Transformers in toy aisles and on TV. But despite the common misconception, GoBots was not a mere imitator, simply hopping on the Transformers bandwagon to cash in. From box art, to robot design, cartoon adaptation and catch phrases (Robots In Disguise/More Than Meets The Eye), Optimus Prime’s Cybertronian cohorts were just cooler. Return to GoBotronĬourageous subsequently became a key part of the Guardians' arsenal, helping fight threats including Ultra Zod, Sentinel and Puzzler.Let’s face it, GoBots never had the staying power of their fellow transforming robot vehicle competitors The Transformers. The mighty robot soon trounced the Renegade forces, liberating GoBotron. In order to combat Roguestar he commanded Leader-1, Turbo, Scooter and Small Foot to link their Power Suits to his spaceship, forming the Power Warrior Courageous. The Power Suits and the Command Jet were devised by the Last Engineer for the Guardians to help retake GoBotron from the Renegade alliance of Cy-Kill and the Master Renegade. Courageous toy box Grungy toy box Challenge of the GoBots cartoon They don't have a long search before finding Grungy, piloted by Cy-Kill and four of his henchman and the two Power Warriors lock in battle. With Leader-1 commanding four top Guardians from the chest, Courageous hunted for Renegades.

Dear Vector Prime, who are the Botropolis high Council and what connection do they have with the 13? If they're not of the 13, then who are the 13 in that universe?
Dear Council Concerned,
The Botropolis High Council were a trine of noble bots, who were chosen to lead the Go-Bots due to their heroic qualities. The three leaders included the noblest in Maximus-Bot, the wisest in Blaster-bot, and the most logical in Prowl-Bot.
They drew on a long lineage of great rescue heroes, which did indeed date back to the original Go-Bots, although this was one of the universes where Gobotron was founded by seven bots, rather than thirteen. We were Airlift Andy, Charlie Chopper, Fire Marshal Mike, Medic Mandy, Policeman Pete, Rescue Roy, and myself, Veterinarian Vic.
