Transformers: Mosaic #572 - "Hard To Swallow"
Originally posted on January 13th, 2011

wada sez: Skyhammer was an Ultra Pretender who never did much of anything, and never appeared in IDW continuity; this strip inserts him into Bludgeon’s backstory, explaining how the villain lost his jaw. The strip’s title is a play on his injury. Josh van Reyk also uses Razorclaw, one of his favorite characters, who he’d previously had the chance to write officially in Spotlight: Jazz. Clean art below, along with a preview for tomorrow’s strip.

Transformers Warfare: Magnus (Rank)
The title of Magnus is one worthy of dignity and respect. Often considered to be the second highest rank achievable within the Autobots, just below "Prime", the mere mention of a Magnus on any given battlefield is enough to strike fear in many a Decepticon. To be worthy of such a rank, one needs to be courageous, tough, and compassionate. Many bots have tried to become a Magnus, but few have succeeded.
Known Magni
Ultra Magnus
Possibly the most famous among the Magni is Ultra Magnus, leader of the Wreckers, an elite group of some of the toughest soldiers within the Autobot ranks. Ultra Magnus is one of Optimus Prime's oldest friends, having known each other from the Autobot leaders' days as Orion Pax.
Arcana Magnus
Little is known about this Magnus, aside from her similarity in both color scheme and demeanor towards the Autobot Arcee, leading some to suspect that Arcana is a counterpart to her from an alternate timeline or universe. She is a recluse, preferring to keep hidden on the spider-infested planet of Archa Seven. If this is actually an Arcee counterpart, whatever happened to her to make so unwilling to go against the Decepticons anymore - not to mention her techno-organic spider mode - is a mystery, one few Autobots are willing to uncover.
Leader Magnus
Formerly known as "Leader-1", Leader Magnus is the commander of the Autobot subfaction, The Guardians. The Guardians were originally an Autobot equivalent birthed from a similar Great War on the Cybertronian colony planet of Gobotron, until the planet was destroyed by said warfare and much of the population was decimated. Now a Magnus within the Autobot ranks, Leader looks to keep the rest of his friends alive, and perhaps correct his past mistakes which lead to his home planet's death.
Skyhammer Magnus
One of the few flight capable Autobots who is neither a Triple Changer nor affiliated with the Aerialbots, Skyhammer Magnus is a powerful yet graceful warrior. Although he and his team have spent much time exploring the galaxy, searching for supplies, species to aid, or stray Decepticon outposts to take down, news of Team Prime's location on Earth has drawn them to the planet... just in time too.
Elita-1
Although she doesn't use the Magnus title - Elita Magnus just sounds pretentious - Elita-1 still very much qualifies as one, and is often eager to show Decepticons why that is. Strong and capable, she acts as Optimus Prime's second in command on Earth, having left command of her previous unit to...
Splendid Magnus
Splendid Magnus is a courageous and honorable leader, unafraid to make the hard decisions. Formerly the SIC to Elita-1 in the all-femme attack squad Shield of Solus, Splendid was granted both the rank of Magnus and command of the team when Elita left Cybertron with Optimus.
Delta Magnus
The leader of the Primal Vanguard, Delta Magnus and his team were once some of the best soldiers in the Autobot army. Unfortunately, an attack from the Decepticon Heavy Brigade left a large number of them dead, Delta included. The left over members would reform under the leadership of Grimlock as the Lightning Strike Coalition, then later the Dinobots.
Pyra Magna
Though she doesn't follow conventional naming schemes, Pyra Magna of Caminus is every bit a Magnus as everyone else with the name thanks to her relentlessness and ambition. Much like Splendid Magnus and Elita-1 previously, Pyra leads an all-femme team known as the Torchbearers, which can combine into Victorion. Although the team is more suited for and accustomed to collection and preservation of ancient Cybertronian artifacts, one can always count on Pyra and her "Rust Renegades" to come to their aid, should she hear their cry.
Maximal Magnus
A close friend to the Camien Windblade, Maximal Magnus was a virtuous Autobot of great leadership capabilities. Unfortunately, virtue was not enough to save her from deactivation. When she travelled to Eukaris to negotiate and trade for supplies, she was ambushed by the newly formed Predacons, inspired by the Decepticon Preditron. Maximal Magnus sacrificed her life to save her team and a small group of Eukarians, but in doing so left her team leaderless. However, her sacrifice inspired a new faction to rally up and stop the new threat, using the first half of her name as their moniker. Her group, meanwhile, has found new leadership, though they will never forget their first leader.

TODAY IN FICTION: Competing companies battle in the skies over megacities in Skyhammer (🇬🇧2000)
Tumblr media
Unspecified date, 2022
Ten years ago, a virus completely wiped out the financial structures of the world. Money and ownership became untrackable, and corporations descended into warfare against one another in order to maintain their grip on their assets. The people of the world either had to pledge their loyalty to a corporation, or operate as outlaws.
This year, in 2022, an unnamed pilot joins the Cytox Corporation, taking missions and bounties to openly battle against competitors in the skies above the world’s megacities.
After a series of setbacks and delays, Skyhammer was released on this day 22 years ago.

BEHOLD, THE GLORY OF JETFIRE!!! One of my favorite Transformers growing up, his Armada version was my SHIT as a kid. Thought he was the coolest bastard around, and this version is very much inspired by that. But he's also inspired by the concept of him having been a former Decepticon, but looking way more like he actually would've fit in with such a group.
Lore and backstory below! Warning, it's a long one... OwO
Like many of Cybertron's fiercest revolutionaries, Jetfire's desire to set his people free of tyranny began in the pits of Kaon. A fearsome gladiator, he was one of the very few who could provide the siblings of Arcee and Megatron with a worthy challenge. Along with them, Jetfire formed the third of the frightening triad that stood at the top of Kaon's charts. Arcee the Dervish, Megatron the Juggernaut, and Jetfire the Champion; together they were a force to be reckoned with.
Unlike Arcee who loathed her skill in killing, Jetfire was more inline with Megatron in reveling in combat. Though he didn't necessarily enjoy killing, the aerial bot simply enjoyed the rush of fighting a worthy opponent. It was his own form of art, and it gave Jetfire such a joyous purpose in life. But as Megatron found his way out of the Pits to pursue politics, Jetfire instead found himself stagnant and bored.
Without Megatron to provide a worthy challenge and inspire the rest of the Pits, and as Arcee lost her drive for the pits themselves, Jetfire had no worthy challenges anymore.
That is, until Megatron called upon his old battle-brother to rise from the depths of Kaon. He called to Jetfire's desire for a challenge, and inspired him to follow into the Decepticons and to fight for a true purpose. Given both a chance to fight, and the opportunity to fight for a worthy cause for the first time in his life. After Megatron told him of all the injustices he'd exposed, Jetfire gladly became the leader of the Decepticons' aerial forces.
For the early decades of the Civil War, Jetfire had faithfully served his battle-brother's cause. As Sentinel forced more and more civilians to be thrown into the war, Jetfire found his ire rising to severe degrees. Especially one day, when during a skirmish against the Senate's soldiers, Jetfire found a brave woman who'd not let the ferocity of the decepticons make her falter. He could tell from a glance she was meant for the sea, and yet Sentinel's regime had forced her to fight his enemies on land.
Jetfire offered to bring her to a sanctuary where the war never went, and begrudgingly she accepted on one condition; her siblings that hadn't even taken on modes came with her.
And so he accepted, and Jetfire smuggled them all beneath the eyes of his comrades and enemies alike. Once they had been hidden away, safely watched over by the bots of neutral sanctuary that was Tyger Pax. The secret birthplace of Jetfire himself, old friends Nitro Zeus and Skyhammer were entrusted with their protection. As the fembot realized that this "brute" was actually quite the softie, she finally gave him her name; Valveguard.
Long conversations with her and quiet nights spent with her siblings drastically changed Jetfire's spark. He quickly realized that while the society that oppressed their people truly needed to burn, the fire that the Decepticons had lit had gone out of control. But every time he tried to speak reason to his old friend and leader, Megatron instead preferred the encouraging venom from Starscream. So strongly did the snake have the gladiator lord's ear, he was even able to whisper of betrayal in Jetfire's spark. And when Sideways fed Starscream the intel of the neutral bots Jetfire still fraternized with, it was all he needed to get Jetfire demoted and replace him as leader of the seekers.
Betrayed by the man he'd once seen as a brother, Jetfire was now thoroughly disenchanted with what it meant to be a decepticon. In his childhood home and in front of his friends and Valveguard, he used a torch to burn off his insignia. He remained in Tyger Pax with his friends, and despite his spark-break and sorrow found solace in Valveguard's company. But his silent desertion would not go unnoticed, and Starscream would lead a personal campaign against all of Tyger Pax to hunt his predecessor down.
But while Jetfire felt forsaken by Megatron, he was not forsaken by the entire family.
Much to his surprise, Jetfire and his friends found their defense of Tyger Pax joined by the Autobot Resistance. Arcee herself led the charge, and admitted to her old battle-brother how she'd never abandoned him. Spies from the autobots had kept tabs on him for her, and she'd resolved to keep him safe after he'd deserted. While Arcee gave him no pressure at all to join her, he knew that Starscream would never let him live in peace.
Leaving Nitro Zeus and Skyhammer to helm Tyger Pax's defense in his absence, Jetfire swore to Valveguard that he would fight for a truly just cause as he officially joined the Autobot Resistance.

One Decepticon concept I’ve been toying with off and on for RiD15 is a pack of Glitch Mice that descend on Crown City and start causing machinery to malfunction. Conceptually their Robot Modes are based on Beast Wars Metals Rattrap’s cartoony Beast Mode, while their Vehicle Modes are loosely based on Star Wars mouse droids.
I saw them having a controller, as these are more Cybertronic wildlife, and thought of bringing back Slink, the cat burglar Decepticon from the RiD15 chapter books, creating distractions with Glitch Mice as part of a money making scheme. If not her, another cat bot similar to Scratch and Razorpaw then.
Glitch Mice and Retrorats are distinct species, with Snitch, Labrat, Packrat and Rattrap being Retrorats in addition to being fully sentient. Retrorats also appear to enjoy retro things and speak in outdated slang, be it from Cybertron or other planets, lol.
Some other one off ideas I had was a bulldog Decepticon based on Terrashock’s model, a Sharkticon Combiner in the vein of Chop Shop, a Chop Shop recolor made into Tarantulas, a rework of SkyByte who is a Torpedo Deployer (Slapper as a Slicedice retool?), Autobot Dogfight appearing but he’s redesigned to resemble Snoopy’s pilot look in Robot Mode, and helps the Bee Team with an air battle. I’m not sure about this one because I already had Stormshot, Twinferno, Cloudraker and Skyhammer as supporting characters though. I also had considered other Pretenders coming in as guests, though the only one with a shell atm because it’d be plot relevant would be Iguanus, who’d be a large kaiju stomping around Crown City. His true body, in bike mode, is stored in the Pretender Shell’s head, acting like the creature’s brain. Skullgrin/Dauros was also considered possibly in a similar role, and if not, a member of the Buffaloid line instead.
I’ve also toyed with a modified Ultra Bee that possesses a super mode when combined with Stormshot (a gun) and Twinferno (jet pack).
Reoccuring Decepticon mooks working for Steeljaw and Glowstrike would likely be OCs Razorback (Duocon), Mole Dive (Combiner) and Choptor (Ardurian Roc). Choptor is partnered with Mini-Con Sandsting and they partially function as a nod to Blackout and Scorponok from the movies.

Transformers Warfare: Darkstar Crew
A small group of Autobots, the Darkstar crew was the closest team to Earth when a distress signal was detected on Earth. Arriving to find the Autobot forces scattered, Optimus Prime missing and presumed dead, and the Decepticons preparing to take over the planet, Skyhammer Magnus and his team must do the seeming impossible and reunite everyone to save the Earth.
Skyhammer Magnus
A highly ranked Autobot, Skyhammer Magnus is the leader of the crew of a starship known as The Darkstar. One of the few flight capable Autobots unassociated with the Aerialbots, he is one of the most graceful flyers known, second only to the treacherous Starscream. Despite this, he is most famous for his arsenal of weapons, a large assortment of firepower capable of taking down the toughest of foes.
Skyhammer Magnus transforms into a MH-60R Seahawk. He is armed with a heandheld EMP Shotgun, missile pods mounted on his forearms, and an Energon Sword, personally bestowed upon by Optimus Prime.
Roulette
Skyhammer Magnus's right hand bot, Roulette was a victim of tragedy when her sister, Pirouette, was murdered during an invasion on her home planet, Velocitron. Sparkbroken, Roulette made it her life's mission to ensure that she would spare anyone else a similar grief. She migrated to Cybertron and joined the law enforcement, a path which set her on the path to becoming an Autobot... a journey which led to her reencountering her last living sister, Silhouette, now going by Shadow Striker, a hyper competent and resourceful Decepticon with a grudge with Roulette for abandoning her to her grief. Though the two are on opposite sides of the battlefield, Roulette holds hope that one day, she can resolve things with her sister.
Roulette transforms into a Dodge Viper (VX I). She is armed with a standard issue laser rifle.
Ulchtar
Formerly a Decepticon who idolized Megatron and his ideals, the Decepticon quickly fell out of favor for Ulchtar when he realized Megatron doesn't care about his troops or value their lives after he was left for dead. When Optimus Prime encountered Ulchtar, the bot joined with the Autobots for a chance to make Megatron pay, but it was Optimus's compassion that changed his motivation from revenge to a genuine desire to do good.
Ulchtar transforms into a Saab JAS 39 Gripen. He is armed with a sword that is formed from one of his jet mode wings.
Red Alert
An Autobot medic, Red Alert is a cautious bot, emotionally dedicated and often reluctant to participate in a fight. Some blame it on the Decepticon ambush which robbed her of her left hand, others on an unending state of paranoia. Whatever the reason, she's a reliable source of medical aid, and should the situation call for it, she'll brave the battlefield to help those she can.
Red Alert transforms into a Nissan Patrol Rescue SUV. She normally doesn't use weapons, but she carries a particle beam rifle for when she's in a desperate situation.
Backfire
A Velocitronian who has mastered the use of speed on a battlefield, Backfire may be small, but in his optics, that just means his enemies have a tougher time catching him. Indeed, the little Autobot is famous for his dodging, but his lightly armored frame mean he's more susceptible to damage. It's only a matter of time before a Decepticon gets lucky, but Backfire is sure he'll spring back up in case that happens.
Backfire transforms into a Can-Am Spyder. He is armed with a plasma cannon.

Dear Vector Prime, can you tell us the story of Crash Combiner Skyhammer and Shocknado from RID 2015?
Dear Combiner Compatriot,
Their story, as with many other poor ‘bots on post-war Cybertron, begins with Cyclonus. As ambitious as he was ruthless, Cyclonus had already brought Cybertron under his heel after a well-placed coup, leaving the populace none the wiser as to the true nature of the new High Council. But Cyclonus was not content to stop there, however—he wanted to resurrect the Decepticon empire, better and stronger than it ever was, so that when Megatron inevitably returned he would find a well-oiled war machine ready to wreak destruction upon the galaxy. Cyclonus sought to purge every possible failure that had led to the undoing of the old order. In the twilight of the war, with so many of his forces dead or lost to the reaches of deep space, Megatron grew to rely on Vehicon warriors—primitive and single-minded, with no capacity for lateral thought—and this, Cyclonus believed, was the Decepticon leader’s first fatal flaw. The new Decepticon order, he decided, would have no room for such archaic throwbacks.
Only a few weeks after Bumblebee and his team left Cybertron for Earth, the High Council announced the formation of the Badgeless—supposedly, a new pan-factional group of peacekeepers who would protect and serve Cybertron unconditionally. The reality, however, was far more sinister: Cyclonus and his many moles in the Cybertronian government were building an army by harvesting new protoforms directly from the Well of All Sparks. These unfortunate newborns were snatched from the Well the moment they came online and spirited away to a top-secret black site. Under the ministrations of Trepan and his partner Psychobat, these “recruits” received a stream of hypnotic suggestions and propaganda in between controlled dosages of high-intensity radiation; those that survived the irradiation were transformed into combiners—any one soldier could combine with any other. With the right string of code words, these sleeper agents could spring to life to become deadly Decepticon shock troopers: intelligent, versatile warriors who were twice as obedient as any Vehicon and capable of combining to become exponentially stronger than all but the mightiest Cybertronian. Skysledge, Stormhammer, Shockdrive, and Warnado were among the few recruits that made it to the end of this process, becoming high-ranking field officers in the clandestine army.
Only a few weeks after Bumblebee and his team returned to Cybertron and established a truth and reconciliation commission to determine how far Cyclonus had been allowed to extend his tendrils into the Cybertronian government; while investigating rumors of missing persons, Strongarm and Dropforge stumbled across one ill-timed “procurement mission” and brought it to the attention of the provisional High Council. Furious that such a thing could be allowed to happen on Cybertron, Optimus Prime insisted on personally leading the raid on Black Site Alpha. He and his unit arrived just in time to save a fresh batch of would-be Decepticons from the first step of indoctrination. Several victims, including both Stormshot and Wedge, took the rescue to heart and eventually became full-fledged Autobots themselves.
In between his various adventures on Earth, Ratchet has turned his attention to rehabilitating the unfortunate bots who had been previously corrupted by the process, establishing support groups and repatriation efforts to return them to normal society. Stormhammer and Skysledge have taken an active role in the process, and are currently working with the High Council to locate and reacclimatize more members of this “Lost Generation”.
