rlly rlly hoping you’re still active but i need some advice for a first time cosplay as face, specifically where to start. do i look around thrift stores for clothes? do i find things that are similar or that need to be modified? are there any good tutorials on a dave cosplay you can reccomend?
@thecosmicapple
Hi there. Congrats on your first cosplay! Welcome to this fun hobby.
If you haven't checked out this website yet, it's an archive of Homestuck related cosplay tutorials and guides. They have a sections dedicated to specific characters, so just scroll down to you find Dave.
The difficulty of this cosplay depends on which version of Dave you are cosplaying. WhatPumpkin used to sell official Dave shirts, both plain white tee shirts and the red sleeve baseball tees. You should be able to find either of those on eBay pretty easily. Here is an etsy listing for made to order Dave shirts. If you're looking for more DIY, purchasing a shirt at a thrift store and modifying it is also a great option. Here's a tutorial for using heat transfers for the shirt logos.
Here is a Dave cosplay guide. It's for his godtier outfit, but should help you out nonetheless.
Thrift stores would be a great place to start for aviator sunglasses. I think every pair of glasses I ever bought for cosplays were from Walmart or the Dollar Tree, so those are also good starting places if you have them locally.
Here's a link to a pretty cheap blonde wig to get you started. When I first started this blog 10 years ago, there wasn't much of a market for cosplay items on Amazon yet. I've bought a few wigs from there over the years. Just always check reviews! Some other good cosplay specific wig sites are Arda Wigs, EpicCosplay Wiigs, and the Five Wits Wigs, bu they are all on the pricier side because they sell very high quality synthetic wigs. A simple Amazon or eBay wig is plenty to start off with, though. Here's a wig styling tutorial on YouTube.
And lastly, remember to have fun. Cosplay is a hobby and it should be fun for you. Best of luck to you! Please feel free to reach out with any other questions. I'm sporadically active on this blog still, and typically answer messages privately.

I have a pattern for Kanaya's red dress but I have no clue what kind of fabric to use. Any ideas?
THIS. use this. for the love of all things holy use this.
I'm very partial to this fabric because i've been talking myself out of buying it for months because i have no real reason to make kanaya's red dress. but this fabric is suuuuper soft in person and has an amazing stretch and will look super great on your body and ugh. I'm a huge fangirl for this fabric.
But to be honest, you can use any red fabric that really suits your liking. Look on the back of the pattern for fabric recommendations!
I hope this helps!

I'm doing a roxy, for a prop, do you think I could you a color guard rifle? Thanks so much!
Personally I wouldn't (spun guard for 8 years holla). I just think it looks very obviously not like a gun, and to be honest those things are kinda bulky and dumb looking. You'd be better off with a bb gun or something similar.
I hope this helps!

Do you have any tips on a Seer of Blood cosplay?
please advert your attention to these fine tutorials: 1 2 3
As for the fabrics you should use, I'd go with a nice knit that'll drape well on your body. If you'd like something that'll cling to your body more, perhaps looking for a tighter look? (recommended for fem!kankri or whatever) go with this in the color "potting soil". If you don't want the spandex knit, go with this also in "potting soil".
But tbh i always need to go into a fabric store and feel the fabrics before i buy them to make sure it's what I want. You should probably take a trip down to your local fabric store and feel stuff.
I hope this helps!

Hi! I'm making an aradiasprite cosplay, and was wondering what kind of white paint you would recommend?
What you use really depends on your skin and what you'd prefer. Ben Nye is probably the best choice, but if you don't like thick oil based paint on your skin, you should go with a water based paint instead.
For the love of god, whatever you do, don't use white snazaroo. Just don't. It's nearly impossible to make it look good, and you might as well just pay for nicer water based paint like Mehron or Wolf.
I hope this helped!

Hi, sorry to bother you, I just found your blog and it’s really nice!
I am planning my first cosplay for anime central, and I will be dressed as my godtier, Sylph of Space. I was lucky enough to snag a nice opera dress (pictured above) at the Lyric Opera sale this year. However, since the dress fabric is a really nice quality and really pretty, I am faced with the dilemma of matching the hood with the dress. If you could help out, or give any tips, that would be great!
Keep doin’ whatcha do!,
Midge
Hello Midge!
So I grabbed a reference image:

So idk if you're planning on going off canon and altering the dress, or if youre going to use your own design or what.
Okay, if you want the hood to be a similar fabric as the dress, it might help you to bring the dress with you to fabric stores and matching colors. Actually, i'd honestly bring the dress to a fabric store to match colors regardless of the material you want to use. Its the only way to guarantee you'd get a color that matches the way you want it to.
I hope this helps! Maybe I'll see you at ACen this year!

I want to use a cane for my Terezi cosplay, but I've heard that you shouldn't if you aren't actually blind. Should I still do it?
That doesn't make any sense to me. Terezi's cane is hardly a cane; she never (to my memory) uses it like an actual cane. It's a weapon to her and she doesn't use it to "see". She "sees" using her smell and taste, so the cane never actually serves it's human purpose. Not to mention that Terezi is, in fact, an alien.
Using this logic, it means that no one can cosplay Vriska unless they're ACTUALLY missing an eye and an arm, no one can cosplay Caliborn unless they've cut off their own leg, no one can cosplay Aradia unless they're dead, and no one can cosplay Tavros unless they're actually paralyzed and in a wheel chair.
I could talk about this topic for literally days but I'm going to spare everyone the wall of text.
My advice: do it. No one's stopping you. Hundreds of thousands of people have cosplayed Terezi before you and used her cane, so what's sopping you now? It's just a prop, and unless you're going to walk around like you're actually blind (don't do that that's really shitty), then there's nothing to worry about.

Could you please link me to tutorials and help for God Tier Meulin as well as with her canon outfit? The green leo shirt? I've never done a homestuck cosplay before and I'm so lost. Sorry for bothering you. I searched meulin on your blog and it only came to her green cat sweater outfit. Could you please help me?
Here's what I've found for you:
Masterpost (1, 2)
God tier (1, 2)
Wings (1, 2)
It might make your research easier if you look for god tier Sollux tutorial/guides/walkthroughs, since he has the same class and is a more popular/important character.
I hope this helps!

do you know any good patterns for jade's 3am dress? and would it be better to use bias tape or ribbon for the green edges?
Here are some patterns that may be what you're looking for:
One, Two, Three, Four
And here are some 3AM dress-specific tutorials:
One, Two, Three
I've personally never used bias tape, but from what I've heard its cleaner than ribbon. I used ribbon fr the pink trim on my Feferi skirt, and it was very sheer (but perhaps thats just because of the kind of ribbon i used). Check out those 3AM dress tutorials because they probably have more insight than I do.
I hope this helps!

Hi! I was wondering if you could help me with my God Tier Dave cosplay? I need a hood/cape and I have no idea how to sew, plus i have no money to buy one. The closest thing i have that could maybe help a little is an old angry bird blanket hood thing that i have?? Do you know how i could make a God Tier Dave hood/cape or be able to buy one for cheap somewhere?? (I only have like $35...)
Unfortunately most costumers who do commission god tier hoods charge quite a lot for them (which is completely understandable considering how much work goes into them plus the actual price of materials). As for hoods for sale, you might want to browse the "cosplay sale" tag on tumblr, or maybe check out CosTrader.
But, if you want to make one yourself, I believe you can make one from scratch with the budget you have. Here is a post from a few months back that has some references you can use to make a Knight hood. Those tutorials are probably more help than I am, so please check them out.
I hope this helps!

Regarding Questions:
Please please please be patient. Ill respond as soon as I can. I use the "royal we" a lot, but this blog has only one admin so it takes time to get stuff done sometimes. If you ask a question/submit something: I see it. Please don't resend things because it seems very rude to me, even if you don't intend it to be. Ill answer your question as soon a I can.

I'm going to start this answer with the disclaimer that I've never made a thief hood, nor have I made god tier wings. All I can offer are the tutorials I've found and the little experience I have from making hoods.
Hood 1
Hood 2
Wings 1
Wings 2
Just remember to always line your hood! It looks cleaner and it's easier to stuff the back to get it to stand up.
I hope this helps!

First of all, there is no reason to resend the same ask. It takes a while to get around to all the questions that are in the inbox. Just be patient.
Second, I've never personally made a knight cosplay (nor will I probably ever), so I literally googled it for you. Here's some tutorials that I found.
Tutorial 1
Tutorial 2
Tutorial 3
Lastly, please be more specific in your asks next time! I don't know if you only wanted a hood/cape tutorial, or if you wanted to figure out how to construct the shirt or what.
I hope this helps!

Okay, I'm back after an ungodly hiatus. I'm working to get the queue set back up, and I'll get your questions answered as soon as possible.
That being said, if you're asking a question, please be as specific as possible! We get too many vague questions that we just cannot answer because we don't know what you mean!
Anyway, stay tuned for your regularly scheduled Homestuck cosplay assistance!
