Brazil snaps into action in response to dengue fever outbreak
Tumblr media
Health authorities in Rio de Janeiro have been working to capture and identify infected mosquitoes as an outbreak of dengue fever hit several of Brazil's cities.
The rise in dengue cases across Brazil has caused several states to declare public health emergencies. Among them are Acre, Minas Gerais and Goias, the Federal District and the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Cases of type 3 virus (DENV-3), which had not been circulating in the country since 2002, began to be reported, prompting Rio de Janeiro's health department to begin a project of vacuuming the mosquitoes to identify the type of virus they are infected with.
Said Mário Sérgio Ribeiro, Under-secretary of the Rio de Janeiro State Health Department said the variant is expected to affect a large portion of the population.

In 2022, after spending six years in the United States, I returned to Brazil. These stories are about my activities and adventures of living in the Amazon, about 1100 miles away from the state of Goias where I lived before. My life is totally different here. The town, Porto Velho, Rondônia sits on the beautiful Madeira River, one of the many tributaries of the Amazon River. The town is…

Santos relegated for first time in 111-year history
Tumblr media
Santos, Brazil legend Pele's former club, have been relegated for the first time in their 111-year history. A 2-1 home defeat by Fortaleza in their final league match of the season meant they dropped out of Serie A, Brazil's top flight. Santos won 12 state titles, six league titles and two Copas Libertadores during their golden era of the 1950s and 60s. Three-time World Cup-winner Pele died at the age of 82 last year. Santos, who also produced Brazil's record scorer Neymar, have suffered financial problems in recent years. Heading into the final game of the season, America Mineiro, Coritiba and Goias had been relegated. With Santos level at 1-1, Vasco da Gama - drawing 1-1 with Red Bull Bragantino - occupied the fourth relegation spot in the 20-team division. But Serginho scored for Vasco in the 82nd minute and a stoppage-time winner from Fortaleza's Lucero left Santos one point adrift of safety. Palmeiras were crowned champions for the second season in a row - and 12th in total - thanks to a 1-1 draw at Cruzeiro. Flamengo and Sao Paulo are the only remaining sides who have never been relegated. Read the full article

Arundhati Roy: I knew that if I didn’t say something, it would be assumed that I agreed with all of this.
I understood then that keeping quiet was as political as speaking out.
I understood that speaking out would be the end of my career as the fairy-princess of the literary world.
More than that, I understood that if I didn’t write what I believed regardless of the consequences, I would become my own worst enemy and would possibly never write again.
So, I wrote, to save my writing self. My first essay, The End of Imagination, was published simultaneously in two major mass-circulation magazines, Outlook and Frontline. I was immediately labeled a traitor and anti-national. I received those insults as laurels, no less prestigious than the Booker Prize. It set me off on a long writing journey, about dams, rivers, displacement, caste, mining, civil war – a journey that deepened my understanding and entwined my fiction and nonfiction in ways that they can no longer be separated. Brazil, Paraguay: High temperatures forecast to persist across central Brazil and Paraguay through at least Sept. 25
High temperatures forecast to persist across central Brazil and Paraguay through Sept. 25. Transport and utility disruptions possible
Tumblr media
Forecast models indicate that high temperatures will persist across much of central Brazil and Paraguay through at least Sept. 25. An unseasonable heatwave due to a persistent area of high pressure over the region could see temperatures reach around 40-45 C (104-113 F) across parts of the affected area in the coming days.
As of Sept. 20, the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) has issued red heatwave warnings (the highest level on a three-tier scale) across parts of southern and western Goias, central, eastern, northern, and southern Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, southern and western Minas Gerais, southeastern Para, northern Parana, far western Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and southwestern and western Tocantins states through Sept. 24. Orange heatwave warnings are in place across rest of the affected area.
Paraguay's Directorate of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has issued a special weather bulletin for high temperatures across the country through Sept. 25. Red warnings for maximum temperatures of 40-43 C (104-109 F) are in place across central and western regions and orange warnings for temperatures of 38-40 C (100-104 F) are in place across the rest of the country.

Cachaca Doministro Prata
Cachaca Doministro Prata. When Carlos Atia retired from his position as “Minister of the Federal Court of Accounts” in 1998, he already had an idea of how he would occupy himself in retirement. For many years Carlos had been producing cachaca on a very small scale and gifting it to friends and family. The cachaca was of such a quality that they would often ask when they would receive another…

Earliest known report of ball lightning phenomenon in England discovered Researchers have discovered what appears to be the earliest known account of a rare weather phenomenon called ball lightning in England. Ball lightning, usually associated with thunderstorms, is unexplained and has been described as a bright spherical object on average 25 centimetres, but sometimes up to several metres, in diameter. Working together, physicist Emeritus Professor Brian Tanner and historian Professor Giles Gasper, of Durham University, UK, made the connection to a ball lightning event while exploring a medieval text written some 750 years ago. The account, by the 12th century Benedictine monk Gervase of Christ Church Cathedral Priory, Canterbury, pre-dates the previous earliest known description of ball lightning recorded in England by nearly 450 years. The findings are published in the Royal Meteorological Society’s journal, Weather. In his Chronicle, composed around 1200, Gervase stated that “a marvellous sign descended near London” on 7 June 1195. He went on to describe a dense and dark cloud, emitting a white substance which grew into a spherical shape under the cloud, from which a fiery globe fell towards the river. The Durham researchers compared the text in Gervase’s Chronicle with historical and modern reports of ball lightning. Professor Brian Tanner, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Physics, Durham University, said: “Ball lightning is a rare weather event that is still not understood today. “Gervase’s description of a white substance coming out of the dark cloud, falling as a spinning fiery sphere and then having some horizontal motion is very similar to historic and contemporary descriptions of ball lightning. “If Gervase is describing ball lightning, as we believe, then this would be the earliest account of this happening in England that has so far been discovered.” Prior to this account, the earliest report of ball lightning from England is during a great thunderstorm in Widecombe, Devon on 21 October 1638. Medieval writings rarely survive in the author’s original version and Gervase’s Chronicle and other works now exist in only three manuscripts (one in the British Library, and two at the University of Cambridge). The Latin text was edited by Bishop William Stubbs in 1879 and there is no translation into English. Professor Giles Gasper, in the Department of History, Durham University, said: “The main focus of Gervase’s writings was Christ Church Cathedral Priory in Canterbury, its disputes with neighbouring houses and an Archbishop of Canterbury, as well as chronicling the actions of the king and his nobles. But he was also interested in natural phenomena, from celestial events and signs in the sky to floods, famine, and earthquakes.” The researchers looked at Gervase’s credibility as a writer and a witness, having previously examined his records of eclipses and a description of the splitting of the image of the crescent moon. Professor Gasper added: “Given that Gervase appears to be a reliable reporter, we believe that his description of the fiery globe on the Thames on 7 June 1195 was the first fully convincing account of ball lightning anywhere.” TOP IMAGE....Extract from the Chronicle of Gervase of Canterbury where the medieval monk describes the ball lightning phenomenon.
