description: on the night of the outbreak, schlatt is forced to run for safety and everything sinks in as he deals with the fact that this is his new reality.
warnings: mentions of blood and death (not schlatt), apocalypse au.
Tumblr media
The apocalypse happened on a Tuesday.
A lot of things happened on that Tuesday all around the world. Children being born, someone being promoted, someone finally having a good day, and some news about some people acting strange in Little Rock. Fuck happens in Arkansas, anyway?
Schlatt didn’t care about what was happening around the world or why people were acting strange in Little Rock. It was America- he’d be concerned if nothing strange was happening. He had a jam-packed schedule that was supposed to be done before his head had hit the pillow that night. Record that podcast episode that they’ve been putting off due to issues. Reply to work emails that started to pile up in his inbox. Meet up with some old friends he had suddenly gotten back into contact with. It was an ordinary day for him.
The New York sirens were a little bit louder that night when he stumbled back to his apartment after hanging out with his old friends at a random bar they picked off Google Maps. He didn’t drink much, the climb to his apartment made his legs more tired than they should have been. The sirens didn’t bother him that much- he had already gotten used to the New York City ambience from a young age. He cursed and huffed, trying to unlock his door, so that he could get some well needed sleep after a long day.
While Schlatt was a deep sleeper and had always joked that he could not be easily awoken, he woke up in cold sweat that night, having heard loud screams and the sound of cars honking continuously out on the streets. Then the sound of glass shattering made him leap out of bed, carefully running to his window to check outside.
The streets were pure chaos. Schlatt could see the broken windows of the small corner store he always frequented, fire engulfing the entire building. He could see smoke from a distance as well. People fled from the scene, some screaming while some just ran. They looked like they were trying to run from something, Schlatt couldn’t figure out what. What was happening? Loud stomping was heard from the room above him. Muffled voices and shouts before it just went quiet. His upstairs neighbors weren’t the type of people to suddenly go quiet.
Something was wrong. He felt it deep in his bones and he needed to leave now. Notifications flooded from his phone, lighting the room up. He grabbed it, seeing the panicked messages from Ted, Charlie, and the others. Missed calls and one hundred plus text messages from his friends combined, his phone died before he could send any text out. God fucking damnit.
His front door slammed loudly like something - or someone - was trying to break in. Schlatt moved quickly, throwing on his sweater and grabbed the baseball bat he kept in the corner of his bedroom. Slowly opening his bedroom door, the loud banging from the front door increased and Schlatt held the bat up, prepared to swing at anything that managed to break down his door and come at him. Then he heard the wooden door crack open, hearing the door fall onto the floor with a loud thud, a chill ran up his spine. Hands gripped the handle tightly, knuckles turning white.
It was like a scene from his nightmares when he was younger. The kind that made him wake up in cold sweat and made his mouth dry. The former human now turned deformed creature from the depths of hell let out a shrieking sound, its grotesque figure standing upright and its eyes suddenly trained on him. It made a janky turn and sprinted towards him, Schlatt swung the bat as hard as he could, hitting the creature with a crushing sound. Wide eyes and heavy breath, he looked down at the motionless creature on the floor of his apartment, his hands shaking at what just happened.
The - usually clean - hallway was splattered with blood- some smeared on the beige walls. Schlatt looked away from the scene, feeling bile rise up his throat. He held his bat up in case someone decided to strike. His surroundings were eerily quiet now and the only sounds were from the street below. Schlatt rushed down the stairs and out onto the street. Cars honked at each other, people pushed other people on the ground and some grabbed each other, trying to escape before something like the dead one (God, he hoped that it was dead) back in his apartment got them.
So Schlatt followed the strangers. Ran behind them, grabbed some hands to pull them up from the ground and hoped they followed him. Was New York even prepared for this to happen? Did they even have shelters? There should be a cure, right? His heart was pounding out of his chest and his breathing was heavy. Schlatt could feel his legs throb and cramp up, but he pushed through.
Somehow, by some luck, he made it on the Brooklyn Bridge. Helicopters flew overhead, the sound of them jarring to his ears. Lights shone down on him and the group of strangers, he winced at the brightness. A military tank rolled up on the bridge, and a man's head popped out from the hatch with a megaphone.
“Get off the bridge.” He said, his voice firm. He wasn’t asking. He was forcing them off the bridge.
Schlatt could feel tension around him get worse after the man’s words. Children let out loud cries and their parents tried to shush them. An agitated man pushed past the crowd of people and stood in front of Schlatt. The man twitched oddly and Schlatt froze, gripping the handle of his bat. The man began to move erratically, his foot shifted to sprint at man in the tank. A loud gunshot pierced through, a high-pitched sound ringing out in his ears. Cries, screams, and the high-pitched ringing mixed together in an unholy cacophony of sounds.
He felt something wet on his face, he wiped it off with his fingers. He froze, unable to move or speak. Blood. Blood on his face. Blood from the man that was in front of him a moment ago. The man who now laid dead in front of him, pool of blood surrounding him. Blood on his sweater.
He will not be able to look at that sweater again. It was his favorite too.

Rating states based on how they would hold up as earrings: Part 1
Tumblr media
Alabama: 9/10. Would work pretty good but idk what's going on in the area of Mobile.
Tumblr media
Alaska: 2/10. Absolutely horrid state design. No one cares about the Juneau area or anything south of Anchorage, the little archipelagos or whatever just ruin them.
Tumblr media
Arizona: 5/10. It's not crooked in Google Maps but even then it's hard to find where to put the middle hole in such a wide shape.
Tumblr media
Arkansas: 7/10. If it were the upside down it would be much easier to decide where to put the hole.
Tumblr media
California: 8/10. You put a hole in the middle of the top and tell me it's gonna stay exactly how this shape is. It will sway so SoCal is more to the left. At least it's narrow.
Tumblr media
Colorado: 4/10. It's not exactly a square but it's a wide shape. Who's gonna be able to tell this is Colorado? Nobody.
Tumblr media
Connecticut: 3/10. Again, earring hooks aren't really meant to hold wide shapes like this.
Tumblr media
Connecticut: 6/10. This is an uneven shape. Just because it's narrow doesn't mean it's good.
Tumblr media
Florida: 1/10. Awful awful awful. Maybe this is why people say Florida is America's dick. I shouldn't have to explain why it's bad.
Tumblr media
Georgia: 10/10. Peak state design. You can pretty much tell it's Georgia unless you live outside the U.S. or you are 5.

The apartment search website Abodo created a map outlining the most racist areas in the nation. The site used software that tracked over 12 million tweets posted in 2014 and 2016, filtering out tweets with racial slurs.
Based on these findings, West Virginia was revealed to be the most racist state. Maryland and Louisiana were also the most racist states based on racial slurs used on Twitter.
---------------------------------
Most Racist States [Updated May 2023]
Racism is defined as prejudice or discrimination against people of different races. A racist person believes that his or her race is superior, while other races are inferior. While Americans might think that racism is most prevalent in the United States, it is considered more welcoming and accepting than many other countries. Some of the most racist countries are Bahrain, Lebanon, India, South Africa.
Racism in a given area isn’t something that can be measured like population or area. Polls and surveys can be used, but these aren’t always accurate. Other data, such as instances of hate crimes and hate speech, can also be used to determine where racism is most prevalent.
Because of this, it’s difficult to measure what states in the U.S. are the most racist. However, some organizations and publications have attempted to measure racism throughout the United States. The following contains some of these findings.
Arizona - 75.16
Hawaii - 74.48
Texas - 74.08
Montana - 73.95
Maryland - 72.84
New Mexico - 72.80
Wyoming - 72.77
Alaska - 72.46
Washington - 72.43
Georgia - 72.35
Kentucky - 71.44
Delaware - 71.28
Idaho - 69.92
West Virginia - 69.45
Virginia - 69.19
Florida - 69.08
North Carolina - 68.18
Colorado - 68.06
Tennessee - 67.77
Nevada - 67.71
Vermont - 65.86
Rhode Island - 65.80
Oklahoma - 65.54
California - 65.30
Indiana - 64.37
Missouri - 63.88
New Jersey - 62.84
Alabama - 62.72
Kansas - 62.11
Connecticut - 61.80
Utah - 61.68
Arkansas - 61.62
Massachusetts - 61.12
Mississippi - 60.55
Oregon - 60.22
New Hampshire - 59.95
South Carolina - 59.88
New York - 59.74
Maine - 59.73
Ohio - 57.66
North Dakota - 55.99
Michigan - 55.32
Nebraska - 54.91
Pennsylvania - 54.69
Louisiana - 54.18
Illinois - 53.13
South Dakota - 52
Minnesota - 49.84
Iowa - 44.68
Wisconsin - 33.01
DC - 28.36
Another study was conducted by data scientist Seth Stephens-Davidowitz using Google search data. Based on this data, the study found that the most racist regions in the United States are the rural Northeast and South, which were slave states before the American Civil War.
Searches containing racial slurs were most prevalent in the Appalachian region from Georgia to New York and Vermont.
High concentrations of racist searches were discovered in areas along the Gulf Coast, the Upper Peninsula region in Michigan, and Ohio.
However, it is important to note that these findings aren’t an official ranking of racist states. These studies give some idea of areas in the nation where racism may occur. Some of the states that have made the most racial progress are New Mexico, Hawaii, and Wyoming.
Here are the 10 states with the highest total racism scores:
District of Columbia - 28.36
Wisconsin - 33.01
Iowa - 44.68
Minnesota - 49.84
South Dakota - 52
Illinois - 53.13
Louisiana - 54.18
Pennsylvania - 54.69
Nebraska - 54.91
Michigan - 55.32

While the tree is almost certainly centuries old, the busk ground (notice it isn't capitalized) was not established until 1836. According to the wiki page for the tree:
In 1836, after their arrival, the Lochapokas* chose an oak tree on top of a hill that overlooked the Arkansas River as the site of their council ground. They lit a new ceremonial fire, using coals they had carried on their journey, established a busk ground, where all council business would be conducted.
*Lochapoka is a Tribal Town of the Creek Nation.
Also, Grandma says the site is walking distance from the hotel, which isn't... wrong. But Google maps says it's 1.7km and a 22 minute walk away. That doesn't really sound "as close as possible" to me, but that was the stipulation made by Thanatos. Granted, I have very little frame of reference for how distance affects magic.

FFXIV Write 2024 prompt 12: Quarry
Husband has a large project that needs a lot of aluminum.  Aluminum is made from bauxite.  Husband's research says bauxite is found in Arkansas, which is east of here.  It is far enough away and the project needs enough aluminum that we made it a mining trip together.
I did not appreciate what Husband calls our "noninvasive gathering methods" until I saw invasive ones.  Bauxite is apparently mined using "open-cut" methods, which seems to mean something called a "quarry," where the ground is dug away until what people want is found.
Husband showed me in google maps the quarry he thinks we need to visit, and what it looks like in "satellite view."  Satellites are machines that fly so high up in the sky that they cannot be seen from the ground, yet they have cameras that can see the ground and make pictures.  Even from so high up, the quarry looks like a large, square grey patch.  Numbers on the map showed it was about a quarter-malm across.
We mine with pickaxes, going from node to node, not leaving holes.  We could bring home a few hundred chunks of copper or iron ore in a day.  At the quarry there were people with trucks and large machines taking many tons of stone away, sometimes in pieces and sometimes in large blocks bigger than a car.
Husband says our Eorzean gathering methods are "aetheric crystallization" -- that we are not taking things from the ground as much as we are tapping into the world's aether to produce things.  What those people do at the quarry is simply digging into the world and taking it away.  If that was extracting aether, I would expect that sort of damage from a primal.  Indeed, standing in the middle of the quarry and looking at how dead the land was, it felt as if a primal had been there.
Husband says this is a typical method of mining in this world.  I asked how it could be done without depleting the world.  He said it cannot be…that the world is running out of things.
We found bauxite nodes in a part of the quarry where people were not working.  We spent a lot of time gathering a lot of bauxite so that we would not need to make the trip again soon.  I will be happy to not need to see the place again.

I found an old photo of my Mom in New Jersey.
Here's the photo:
Tumblr media
This photo was taken in the 90s. Proof in the back:
Tumblr media
Now, the reason I know this photo was taken in New Jersey was because of the context clues. Namely, the street names. This photo was taken on the corner of Atlantic Ave and Arkansas Ave. Using this information, I was able to find the location in modern day using Google Maps. Here's the screenshot:
Tumblr media
The arrow points to a familiar location. If you can't find it on the first one, take a closer look at the significant detail that was probably the first thing you saw. Dunno about you, but I'm happy!
