The story of the McLaren F1 and Gordon Murray.
The McLaren F1, a supercar crafted by McLaren Automotive, emerged from the visionary mind of Gordon Murray, who secured the support of Ron Dennis and enlisted Peter Stevens to shape its exterior. Unveiled in 1992, the McLaren F1 redefined the concept of supercars by embracing an uncompromising approach to design and engineering that transcended existing boundaries.
This groundbreaking masterpiece embodied a clean-sheet design, featuring bespoke components tailored exclusively for the car, excluding the taillights. The overarching principle driving its creation was efficiency, resulting in a compact form with featherweight carbon fiber body panels and understructure, along with aluminum or magnesium mechanical parts. Other unique features of the car are its powerful V12 engine from BMW and its center seat arrangement providing for optimal weight distribution. The obsession with weight became legendary, as even the Kenwood stereo, air conditioning, and gold-plated titanium tools were meticulously designed by manufacturers to meet Murray's stringent weight specifications, challenging the capabilities of parts manufacturers at the time.
Often overlooked is the McLaren F1's impressive racing legacy. The GTR competition version, reaching a top speed of 220 mph, immediately demonstrated its prowess by securing first, third, fourth, and fifth positions against purpose-built racers. It left the competition astounded. By the end of production in 1998, McLaren had produced seven prototypes, seventy-two street-legal models, and twenty-eight fully-fledged race versions. Notably, the Sultan of Brunei owns a notable collection of around eight F1s, while several unfortunate examples have met their demise due to over-enthusiastic owners. Fun fact, El Chapo owned one of these legendary vehicles and it has yet to be found.

We love the McLaren F1, it seemed like such a perfect car at the time of launch. This however, aims to improve on it. GMA T.50 debuts - true McLaren F1 successor with 3.9L NA V12, 12,100 rpm redline, 986 kg £2.36 million! - paultan.org Meet the new Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 supercar, or GMA T.50 for short. If you think it shares an uncanny resemblance to the legendary McLaren F1, that’s because Murray designed both cars. https://paultan.org/2020/08/05/gma-t-50-debuts-true-mclaren-f1-successor-with-3-9l-na-v12-12100-rpm-redline-986-kg-rm13-million/ #gmat50 #gordonmurrayautomotive #gordonmurray #gordonmurraydesign #gordonmurrayt50 #mclarenf1 #mclarenp1 #mclarenp1gtr #mclaren600lt #mclaren600 #mclaren600ltspider #mclaren620r #mclaren650s #mclaren650sspider #mclaren650 #mclaren675lt #mclaren675ltspider #mclaren675 #mclaren720s #mclaren720 #mclaren720sspider #nacars #v12cars #v12 #v12engine #v12sound #12krpm (at Papa Smith Custom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDg-IUTnG8K/?igshid=1sbimcgj70bj2

This is the GMR T.50 - Some people might think that this car looks a bit like the modern version of the legendary McLaren F1 and you are absolutely right! 😍👌🏻 © Photos: @richardpardon for @gordonmurrayautomotive GMR stands for nobody less than "Gordon Murray". The South African-born engineer is not only a gifted developer of F1 engines but also the father of the legendary McLaren F1. Now Murray is realizing his own dream with his car company „Gordon Murray Automotive“, founded in 2005, and building his own super sports car. 🏁 The T.50 comes - like the McLaren F1 once - as a three-seater with a 6 speed manual transmission from Xtrac. The car is powered by a free-aspirating 4.0-litre V12 engine (3,994 cubic metres to be precise) with 663 bhp, spinning at a record-breaking 12,100 rpm! 😱 Up to 700 hp is said to be possible per boost. 467 Newton metres of torque are available at 9,000 rpm, 71 percent of which is available from 2,500 rpm! 💪🏻 By the way, the engine weighs only 178 kilograms. ⚖️ The dream car, which is only 1.16 meters high and 4.36 meters long and will only be available as a small series of about 100 units, will cost about 2.6 million pounds. Nevertheless it will be sold out in no time! 💸 https://www.instagram.com/p/CD1ab5Vg--n/?igshid=18x5bqalu6mo5

@gordonmurrayautomotive has shown the T. 50. It is like a #mclarenF1 but improved in every way. With modern tech and keeping its design cues and some stuff same as the original F1. It has a naturally aspirated Cosworth 3.9 litre V12 engine. It gives a peak power output 668HP and it revs upto 12800RPM it sure should have a screaming exhaust note. #gordonmurray #gordonmurrayt50 #supercars #car #cars https://www.instagram.com/p/CDf7FXFAUMQ/?igshid=dbivwt1p1x44

Listen to the Cosworth V-12 in Gordon Murray’s T.50 Supercar
Gordon Murray’s new company, IGM, is making no bones about what its upcoming supercar, the GMA T.50, is supposed to be: the spiritual successor to the McLaren F1. The F1, of course, is Murray’s most famous creation, a superlative supercar that paired outrageous performance with unusual practicality and blew everyone’s socks off in the 1990s. The T.50, from what we know, seems to be what the F1 supercar might have evolved into had it continued being made until now—instead of killed off in 1998. And the heart of the T.50 is an engine from legendary outfit Cosworth.

All-new V12 engine: the heart and soul of the #t50 #gma

Let’s take a closer look at that engine, shall we? The new V-12, known as the Cosworth GMA, is seen here working on the dyno during an early proving session. It doesn’t reach anywhere near its claimed 12,000 rpm limit—that’ll come later. But even 1,500 rpm sounds delicious.

The all-new Cosworth GMA V12 fires up for the first time today and revs to 1,500rpm – looking forward to the full 12,100rpm in the coming weeks.  #gma #t50 #cosworth #gordonmurray #supercar

This engine features 3.9 liters of displacement, and it is naturally aspirated. Even so, it should make a very healthy 650 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque—and 50 ponies more when the roof-mounted ram air induction system is active. Given its mission to be the ultimate analog sportswear, the GMA will channel power through a traditional six-speed manual designed with Xtrac of the U.K.
While the T.50 has been referred too as a “GMA T.50”—a name reflected in the Cosworth engine—Murray has also been talking about a less ambitious car known as the T.43 under the IGM brand. It’s not clear if IGM will supersede GMA, or not. In any event, the car world should be a lot more exciting if both of these models make it to production.
