No. 4 Gasholder from Rome Street - City of Carlisle. Sunrise captured a few days ago only 5 minutes walk from my doorstep. At this time of year it's tough getting out of bed at 4:30am to catch the first light, but it's definitely worth it to witness mornings like this. After this beautiful start, it rained for the duration of the day so I was pleased I made the effort. Here, the Grade II Listed structure of No. 4 Gasholder can be seen on the site of the former Gasworks in Carlisle, dating back to 1878-79. Victorian Health Suite Situated in Carlisle on James Street is the city's ‘Turkish Baths’ - also known as the ‘Victorian Health Suite’. The grade II listed building is one of just a handful of similar facilities still operating in the UK and has recently been spruced up in advance of its reopening. Work to refurbish the sauna seating and re-painting of the lounge ceiling improved the look of the building - which dates back to the late 1800s. Inside the decor consists of blue, green and grey glazed brick work, on each side of the room there are two elegantly decorated columns. In the lounge area there are ten relaxation rooms each separated by the original wooden screens of art nouveau panels. Windows are bordered by stained glass providing an abundance of natural light. St Paul’s Church Designed by Architects Frederick Webster Ordish and John Charles Traylen in 1871 with French Gothic Style. Closed in 2003 and this Grade II Listed building is being letting due to lack of budget by the parish for conservation. Photographed with its #VEDay75 flags on display; the White Hart in Ampthill, a former coaching inn, is a Grade II listed building which may date back to the 16th century. Victorian Health Suite Opened in 1909 ‘Carlisle Turkish Baths’ are one of only a handful of original Turkish Baths still in use in the UK. Includes Sauna, Steam Room, Heated Rooms, Cold Plunge Pool and Relaxation area. Hammam’s were an integral part of life for many centuries as a place of ritualist purification in Islamic cultures. Extremely popular in the Middle East and especially Turkey, these baths intrigued English merchants with their therapeutic and cleansing properties - some even promising a cure for baldness. By the mid-17th century they would be known as Turkish baths in the English-speaking world. These Turkish baths went on to be built all around Europe. One notable example is the baths on James Street in Carlisle. After 9 years of construction, the Baths opened in 1909 with the finest tile work - which would become its saving grace.
