In honor of Barricade Day, here’s a very rare Les Mis treasure. A highlights reel of a production from the musical’s early glory days: the 1991 Toronto production at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.
The cast features Michael Burgess as Jean Valjean, Gordon McLaren as Javert, Susan Gilmour as Fantine, Graeme Campbell as Thénardier, Janelle Hutchinson as Mme. Thénardier, Vance Avery as Marius, Ian Simpson as Enjolras, Cara Hunter as Éponine, Cara Chisholm as Cosette, and an unknown Young Cosette and Gavroche.
The snippets of each musical number are too short for me to write a detailed review, but this cast definitely seems to have been an outstanding one!
This video is a very lucky find.

What the hands do is a mindless thing. They dig in and split the dry husks of seeds, all while the mind remains absent; a million miles away, always in gamut of soot long overgrown and empty graves. There’s a hunger starting to pluck its way out again. He can feel it scratch harder and harder with each passing night.
How fucking exhausting this all was.
The scatter of claws and wings barely roused attention. His hands still go through the motions. Grasp, crack, scatter — oh, he’s almost out of seeds. Yet something else falls into the emptiness of a palm. And a shadow, ever encroaching in the periphery, shifts pale blue eyes back into focus. Instead of feeling the hackles rise ( like do so often at even the littlest of things ), Caelan simply watches the array of sproutails and miniature variants of griffinesque creatures crowd around in unwavering loyalty to protect the old sod that feeds them.
When they’re done perching, he looks akin to a puffed statue.

For Sparta! | Part 10 | Spartans' Warrior Spirit Shines
#FM24 #ForSparta Part 10: Spartans' Warrior Spirit Shines. @SpartansFC yet again defied all the odds to take the cinch Championship by storm, only losing 3 times en route to winning the title and reaching the Premiership for the first time! Read here:
The Spartan Army massively upset all the odds to record the best season in club history and reach the Championship playoffs for the first time in 2031. But the challenge now was to build on that improvement and ensure they didn’t suffer a repeat of the relegation in 2029. The Spartans’ summer began with the board deciding to blow £1.6m on new youth facilities – leaving them with £350k in the…

There is an elephant in the room within our discussions on the state of the popular rock during the noughts lurking quite a lot. Yes, I forgot to mention nu metal. I believe the style became a shorthand to simplify the problems of rock in the period. While I would agree the brand had a lot of difficulties, some of the musicians there were quite promising. I mean, Evanescence remain one of those groups no one's really sure what to think of, yet then one samples some of their tunes and one gets surprised. A reason for the latter might be Amy Lee, she stays mentioned as one of the better vocalists of rock, but I still feel the group's underappreciated as the band has a weird place right now, i.e. you root for them, though you go to their concerts for their older material.

For the second time today: WTF Scotland?
A man who identifies as transgender has admitted to sexually assaulting two female volunteers at a local food bank. Graeme Beck, 53, who also uses the name Jane Beck, targeted the women for abuse while working in the kitchen in the cities of Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway, between 2021 and 2022. Additionally, Beck also admitted to having exposed his penis to coworkers in a separate incident.
Tumblr media
Beck was also accused of repeatedly assaulting a 13-year-old girl but entered a plea of not guilty to the charge relating to that allegation, The Scottish Sunreported. He will return to court in April.
Beck was set to go on trial on Thursday, February 23, facing four charges total but instead decided to plead guilty to three of the four counts — including two of sexual assault and one of offending public decency.
The court heard how Beck began to frighten the female volunteers at the Fed Up Community Cafe at Stranraer Baptist Church, a facility for adults struggling with alcohol and drug dependencies and financial problems. The sexual incidents began in October of 2021, when Beck was a patron of the services at the food bank.
In November of 2021, Beck began volunteering in the kitchen, and was afforded more close contact with some of the female volunteers, including the one he’d already harassed.
Imran Hussein, prosecuting, told the court that the first victim said that “Beck was nice to her at the beginning,” but quickly began to develop a habit of touching her without her consent. She explained that Beck grabbed her by the arm, and, when she asked what he was doing, replied “just a wee bit of Strictly,” in a reference to the television program Strictly Come Dancing.
On other occasions, Beck would approach the woman from behind and “slide [his] body against the back of the complainer,” according to the prosecutor.
Hussein added: “It was full physical contact – it was deliberate, sexually motivated and the complainer developed a genuine fear of the accused.”
Despite the sexual nature of the crimes, Hussein used “she/her” pronouns to refer to Beck in his statements to the court.
A second female volunteer told the court that Beck had sexually groped her during what she had thought would be nothing more than a friendly hug. As she moved away, she said the behavior constituted “sexual harassment.” Beck laughed in response, and the woman reported the incident to the police.
In a separate incident related to his work with cosmetics company Avon, the court was told how Beck would participate in weekly conference calls from his home in Stranraer with colleagues between October and December 2021.
“The accused would wear a loosely tied dressing gown with nothing on underneath,” said Hussein. “The accused was warned on several occasions in relation to her attire by one of the complainers. On at least two occasions, the accused’s camera slipped, exposing her penis which was seen by other members,” Hussein said, using feminine pronouns to refer to Beck despite describing his genitals.
Beck, originally from Leeds, had been previously jailed for two years in 2008 after sexually assaulting a sleeping woman he met through volunteer work conducted through a Christian organization.
The woman, who began to trust him, had allowed him to sleep on her couch, and was horrified to discover that he had climbed into her bed, completely nude, before attempting to rape her.
Tumblr media
When Beck appeared in court in August 2008, his lawyer Robert Campbell claimed: “It could have been worse.”
Speaking to the Ayrshire Post during the court case, the victim said: “His lawyer said in court that it could have been worse. How could it have been worse? That is
a ludicrous statement. I thought I was going to die. I was attacked in my own home, the place where I should be most safe.”
Campbell further attempted to argue that the victim was to blame, having allowed Beck back into her home the following day.
The victim blasted Beck’s lawyer in press, stating the defender had gotten the facts of the case completely incorrect: “How mad would I have to be to do that after what happened? That is factually incorrect … He ran off to Leeds the next day, where he was arrested. I had police and forensics teams in my house the whole day,” she said.
“It was also claimed in court that he left when I asked him to. Again, that isn’t true. I had to fight for my life to get him off me. He had his hand on my throat, I thought I would never see my children again.”
Beck had told the woman that he was unable to return to his own residence to sleep, claiming he had allowed another person to stay the night there.
“He tried to make out in court that we were in a relationship,” the victim told the press. “I had never been alone with this man before. I didn’t want to have him sleeping over in my house but as an act of kindness, I let him.”
“I’ve been through hell,” she added at the time, foreshadowing the most recent attacks by stating: “He is evil and I believe he will strike again.”
For the 2008 attack, he was placed on the sex offenders’ registrar for a term of 10 years, but his name would have been removed in 2018. Since pleading guilty to three of the more recent sex offenses he was charged with, Beck has been re-added to the register ahead of his anticipated sentencing in April. He has also been referred for a criminal justice social work report and risk assessment.

Release: December 8, 2003
Lyrics:
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone
These wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
You used to captivate me by your resonating light
Now, I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me
These wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
And you still have all of me
I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me, I've been alone, I'm alone
Songwriter:
When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears
I held your hand through all of these years
You still have all of me ah, me ah, me ah
Amy Lee / Ben Moody / David Hodges
SongFacts:
"My Immortal" is a song from the debut studio album, 'Fallen' (2003). It was released by Wind-up Records on December 8, 2003, as the third single from the album. An alternative version appears on the band's fourth studio album Synthesis (2017). The song was written by singer and pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody when they were 15 and 16, respectively. Various versions of "My Immortal" were recorded, with the earliest in 1997. The version recorded for Evanescence's demo CD Origin (2000) was used on Fallen by the label against Lee's wishes, featuring Lee's demo vocals, a MIDI keyboard, and strings added during the production of Fallen. The song's single release used the re-recording Lee and Moody made for Fallen, dubbed the "band version", featuring a full band's performance after the bridge along with a new string arrangement by David Campbell.
"My Immortal" is a piano power ballad, with fictional lyrics about a lingering spirit that haunts someone. The song received generally positive reviews. It was commercially successful, peaking within the top ten in over 10 countries. It charted at number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts in Canada, Greece and Portugal, as well as on the Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart. The single was certified gold in the US and platinum in Australia. In 2005, it received a nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 47th Grammy Awards. An accompanying music video directed by David Mould was filmed in black-and-white in Gothic Quarter, Barcelona. The video was nominated for the MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video.
The earliest known demo of "My Immortal" was recorded in 1997, which solely featured Lee's vocals and piano and slightly different lyrics. The song was intended to be included on the band's self-titled EP but was cut before it was released. In 2000, the song was re-recorded for the band's demo album, Origin, which contains the bridge added by Lee.[2] A version of the song is also featured on the band's 2003 EP, Mystary.
Lee later said she also dislikes it because she "sounds like a little kid" and the album version does not use David Campbell's orchestration. Moody is credited on the album with producing the song, while on the single's CD Dave Fortman and Moody are credited with production on both the album version and band version of the song. The added strings on the album version were arranged by Graeme Revell for the Daredevil soundtrack.
The bandmembers had recorded a demo of "My Immortal" at the radio station where Lee's father worked after it was empty late at night; this recording, comprising a MIDI keyboard and Lee's demo vocal performance as a teen, is the version used on Fallen per the label's demand, to Lee's displeasure. Lee stated:
"It's really hard for me to listen to the album version because we did it two years ago — it was just me and guitarist Ben, and I've grown so much as a performer since then … It's not even a real piano. And the sound quality is bad because we had to break into the studio to record it late at night when no one was around because we couldn't afford a real session."
When "My Immortal" became a single, Lee and Moody chose the recording they had made for Fallen that the label originally rejected. This recording is dubbed the "band version", featuring a full band performance after the bridge and during the final chorus of the song, as well as Campbell's orchestration. It is the version used on the song's music video and for radio. The later pressings of Fallen contain the single version (or "band version") of "My Immortal" as a hidden track.

Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators - Ronan Farrow
Pandora's Jar: Woman in the Greek Myths - Natalie Haynes
Killers of the Flower Moon: Oil, Money, Murder, and the birth of the FBI - David Grann
That makes 11 fiction and 16 non-fiction so 27 total.
I really didn't get to read as much as I wanted this year, but I did finally get around to the Shadow and Bone trilogy (and was surprised just how different the show ended up being to the third book especially) - the rest of the Grishaverse is on the to read list for 2024. After seeing The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes film (in contrast, a very faithful adaptation) I also revisited the books and do think they hold up as among the best of the YA genre.
It was the year of non-fiction for me, and really, the year of the memoir. I do love an actor's memoir in particular.
On the history front, Greg Jenner was a pleasing discovery, I do enjoy the irreverent tone and unique approach - I also recommend his history podcast You're Dead to Me.
On the true crime front, Catch and Kill was a hugely compelling (but confronting and infuriating) look back at Farrow's reporting of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, showing just how deeply the rot in the entertainment and media industry goes to foster and protect predators. Killers of the Flower Moon was an interesting read after seeing the film, although I was surprised at how much the book focused on Tom White and played as a whodunnit as opposed to the film's reframing of the story.
As for my one true love, myth and legend, I've gone back to Campbell as it's a foundational (if problematic) work before exploring alternate takes - The Heroine with 1001 Faces had some interesting ideas about the role of female archetypes in fiction, and Pandora's Jar was a compelling examination on the women in Greek myth specifically. That made be seek out Haynes's fiction work A Thousand Ships which explores the aftermath of the Trojan War from the female perspective and while I enjoyed that overall, it didn't quite hit the heights I wanted it to. Still, her novel about Medusa is on the to-read list.
Pretty much everyone I know bought me books for Christmas this year, so here's to a productive 2024!
