my mom said one of the friends of my grandmother died. I actually knew this one and got to hang out with her, and I liked her.
she was such an interesting woman. she had the best dog. when I was little I would watch La.ssie and then if I visited her I was so ecstatic bc her dog was a Col.lie. for me as a kid that was A++
she was such a businesswoman! she was a damn sm.uggler))) I'm not kidding. she was one of those people in the u.ss/r who stored contraband clothes in her sofa. my grandma used to say she'd come over for tea and she'd be like: wanna see some stuff wanna trade?
damn I admire this woman)))
her husband was a huge alc.oholic. I'd come over and he was a zoooombie. but he was the kind of a drunk who would get quieter and quieter the more he drank until he slept.
I'm like 100% sure she was so very okay with that arrangement cause he did his thing and she did her thing)))))
I feel like she's always been a firecracker and he just let her be one)) and she was like my husband is nice and quiet, I like that))
she had the worst habit of smudging lots of layers of lipstick and then she would kiss you goodbye on the cheek or mouth. and since her lipstick was cheap it would be such a quest rubbing it off)))
one time my grandma asked her to babysit me for a few days. we came over to her country house and we sat there and sat and sat... she forgot xD xD xD I was nearly eaten alive by mosquitoes. it wasn't fun back then in the moment but it was an adventure and a fun story to tell I think)) cause u kno... insects almost ate me. I think back then I thought it was the nature taking its revenge because I used to eat ants and thought they tasted nice like my mom's silly vitamin c pills...
anyhow, yeah... I'm sad but also kinda... how can I miss her if she's in my head and will always be)) I feel like thinking about her today))
how when she'd come over for ne.w year's she'd "save" my mom and I... cause we'd be like we'll take Baba Zina home. and we'd walk her home and then we'd start smoking like omg mom if granma says one more thing about us being fat))))))) heheh she gave my mom and me a chance to have a smoke break)))
she was a smoker herself at one time I think)
yeah... lovely fun lady. I did like her)) I still do)))

Our effervescent ‘Tasty Jewsdays’ host will have you whipping up this delicious dish and talking-the-talk too! Photo – Amelia Stanwix. Styling – Lucy Feagins. Styling Assistant – Ashley Simonetto.
There’s no yiddishe* dish(e) that sparks more of a visceral reaction in gentiles than gefilte fish.
My Babushka* Zina always made her gefilte fish the old-school way; by boiling the shiitake out of it, and then crowning with a conciliatory mushy carrot. Slathered with chrain*, and wrapped in the glow of her naches* as she watched us devour it, this dish was unmissable every Passover.
Traditionally made with inexpensive and readily accessible white fish such as carp, some recipes also branch out into a pink-fish version (ie salmon), but most stick to the boiling bit pretty vehemently.
That’s why I’m expecting some broigus* with this rendition, because a gefilte ‘fritter’ is kinda cheating… but if there’s anything we’ve learnt from MasterChef Australia, it’s that everything tastes better fried.
Consider this the Gateway to Gefilte: all the flavour of bubba’s fish balls, with the satisfying crunch of fish cake!
Ingredients (serves 6-8)
700g firm-fleshed white fish (such as monkfish or cod) cubed 1 brown onion, roughly chopped 3/4 bunch chives, roughly chopped 1/2 cup fine matzah meal 1 tbsp vegetable/peanut oil (plus extra for frying) 2 eggs 1.5 tbsp sugar 2.5 tbsp salt flakes ½ tsp ground pepper Coarse matzah meal for crumbing
Method
Pop onion, chives, oil and eggs together in the food processor, blitz to a smooth puree. Add fish cubes and pulse until combined (pulsing helps keep the texture mildly chunky rather than soupy).
Combine fine matzah meal, sugar, salt and pepper together, then pop into the processor and pulse through the fish mix a couple of times.
Scoop your mix into a bowl, cover and refrigerate for at least half an hour (this can be done the morning of your fish fritter feast, but not the day before, because there’s little worse than second-day-seafood).
When ready to fry, heat some oil in a heavy-bottomed pan on low-medium heat.
Set up your station with a bowl of warm water (to keep your hands from getting too sticky) and your coarse matzah meal on a flat plate. Scoop two tablespoons of mix into your moistened hands, shape into a patty, then coat with matzah meal.
Fry on both sides until golden brown (around 2-3 minutes a side)
Allow to drain on paper towel, sprinkling some salt flakes on top.
Garnish with fresh horseradish (if you have any) or the jarred stuff – my favourite is the beet-horseradish for colour contrast.
Top tips
Actually, today’s tips are all about the Yiddish I’ve been peppering through this week’s Tasty Tuesday, because having a few of these classic words up your sleeve is as important to master as the recipes themselves.
Yiddishe: this is Yiddish for ‘Jewish’, and is usually used to affectionately to describe people and things – like the classic song popularised by the Barry Sisters, ‘My Yiddishe Momme’.
Dish(e): not a Yiddish word, but I figure that tacking on an “eh” to the end of any word (preferably with an upwards inflexion) is to writing, what adding schmaltz is to cooking.
Babushka/Bubba: Grandma.
Chrain: horseradish
Naches: Yiddish for the warm glow of pride you get from something, most likely from your children, or your children’s children, or your children’s children’s children. Thphu thphu thphu.
Broigus: Yiddish for ‘a bitter dispute’, according to Wikipedia. It usually involves family, and ends in somebody guilting somebody else into doing something they would otherwise not want to do (like put differences aside for Passover Seder… you could call it ‘applying a #gefilte’ for the night).

Ya Rasulullah | Hasanah Mosque
#nts This post is based on a religious talk which I attended earlier and it is inclusive of my personal thoughts and perception. 2 cents worth. Perserverance. Why are we striving so hard only in Raudah? We should strive even at the present location. Be the imam, if not, be the muazzin, if not, be the person who answer to the call of prayers instead of busying ourselves by chit chat or focused on other things instead of the azan. Be the best person for Allah Be the best person for others Be the best person for ourselves Who is the best among ourselves? Is the ones who is clad in turban, jubah, with beard? But not everyone wearing a turban is a good person. The best person is the one who teaches or learn the Quran. Then we'll have the opportunity to be the best. The best person who is the best person is someone who is good to the wife and family. Anyone can be clad in the religious outfit and acts as someone good and pious, but who really knows you well? Your wordly judge would be the wife and family. Rasulullah has never sour-faced to his wife. Marriage. Good to get married. Cost-saving and a simple wedding. Focus on being a good Muslim. A proper imam of the family as a man, or a proper muslimah wife as a woman. Solat. Take care of the daily prayers. It's easy for a woman to go to heaven. Despite our layered clothings, we still persevere, stay patient and pray in the heat. What about the pregnant women? Greater good. Fasting. Women are hardworking to fast. And in terms of preparations in the morning for the family and for iftar. Terawih after that. Tadarus. Take care of your privates. No zina. Obey your husband (Ta'at). Asking for permission to leave the house. Informing the husband of anything, guests entering the house, going out...etc. Patience with the husband even in times of trouble, or challenges (i.e. polygamy). Respect and love. Taking care of a mother as a son, it's not only a daughter's duty. Bathing her, clothed her despite seeing her aurah. Be conscious of your niyyah as a son taking care of your own mother. Nothing else. Caring for your parents especially between siblings. Finances, timing.. plan well among your siblings to fight over who takes care of our parents TOGETHER, not to push the duty to one another. If parents have passed away, don't waste your good deeds just like that. Be good to your in laws, uncles & aunties, grandpa & grandma, older neighbours, parent's friends...etc. If there is no one else that we can care for and treat as parents, do voluntary work to care for others. Niyyah to care for parents. 3 factors of how to be the best 1) Encourage others to do good through any means, e.g. sharing knowledge through social media, teaching...etc. Sharing good things through social media, goes viral and you'll be rewarded; instead of sharing the negative things. 2) When someone is doing something wrong, must speak up but in a nice manner. If no action is taken, the wrong-doer might not realise his wrong doing and he's not entirely at fault. You do you and say something. It doesn't mean that the rebuke is always negative but ensure that it's done in proper and respectful manner. Then the person who we are rebuking won't feel ashamed or defensive. Teach others in a proper manner instead of condemning or insulting them. That is the correct way to share the knowledge to others. Dakwah with love and care. 3) Iman to Allah. Patience. Cleanliness (heart, clothes, house). Love and care. Integrity (at work, with others).
