Vredefort Granophyre You did not want to be around on the day this rock formed. The Vredefort Granophyre is an igneous rock found in certain parts of an area of South Africa called the Vredefort dome (http://tmblr.co/Zyv2Js1gYAvFm). The Vredefort structure is part of the remnant of an ancient impact crater – a gigantic hole in the ground formed from an asteroid impact just over 2 billion years ago.
The impact of the asteroid delivered a huge amount of energy to the target rocks – so much energy that some of them actually melted. The target rocks were a mixture of metamorphic gneisses and basaltic lava, with minor components of shale, carbonates, and metamorphosed quartz-rich sandstone. A granophyre is a fine-grained igneous rock with quartz and feldspar as the main minerals. That mineralogy actually makes sense – add up the ingredients that melted to make the rock and the end result is something like this molten rock. The granophyre is found filling a series of large cracks called dikes that form a swarm around the center of the crater. The large chunks in it were pieces of shattered rock broken by the impact that were picked up by the melt as it was injected. Although the impact super-heated the rocks that melted, by the time it picked up these chunks it had cooled enough that there wasn’t enough heat left to melt them. As the melt migrated through the cracks and cooled, it picked up and partially melted different components, leading to some variation in the chemistry of the rocks from one side of a dike to the other. The extremely violent processes recorded in this rock – shattering and melting of target rocks – are typical of high-energy, giant impacts on Earth and elsewhere. -JBB Image credit: https://flic.kr/p/oxjhQj Read more: http://bit.ly/1Bm3MnS http://bit.ly/1dtuMNb http://sajg.geoscienceworld.org/content/100/2/115.short http://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/sudbury2013/pdf/3031.pdf http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2012Icar..219..168L

Everyone who knows me as a musician and a producer/engineer knows that I love the sound of real amps. Tubes glowing, speakers ripping, the works. I will keep playing and recording real amps probably until the day the last vacuum tube bursts. So trust me if I’m the last person I would have thought would say this: THIS. IS. AWESOME! Will be trying this on some new and old recordings just to see how good it is but just plugging in and jamming it kicks ass. #soundguy #guitarguy #soundengineer #neuraldsp #omegaampworks #granophyre (at Utrecht, Netherlands) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-1_7bpJE8F/?igshid=67yxj6c3nnz

One of the Kings. 756 meters and made up of gabbro and granophyre. Extremely steep and impossible to climb because one step up means you'll slide two steps down. #Eystrahorn #Iceland (at Eastern Region (Iceland)) https://www.instagram.com/p/BowkgXmhxuj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1andlwl59om2q

Everyone needs a sharp rock contact in their lives between a granophyre (right side of the first photo) and the younger pegmatitic rock (left) with epidote veins cross cutting the granophyre. Although it's hard to tell, the pegmatite has differential polishing than the granophyre (due to the Wisconsin Glaciation), which is attributed to different mineral assemblages, their respective mineral hardness, and crystal size.

GEOGRAPHICAL LANDSCAPE - VESTRAHORN MOUNTAIN
There are a lot of natural geographical landscapes to choose from. Every country has at least one mountain, beach or any other landscapes to share to the world.
One of the beautiful landscapes we have is Vestrahorn Mountain, it is surrounded by another two mountains which are Eystrahorn and Brunnhorn. They are famous for their sharp high peaks and horn-shaped form that is why this summit is sometimes called the 'Batman Mountain'. It is located on the South-East coast of Iceland. It is 454 meters high and made of unstratified gabbro and granophyre rocks.
Tourists that visited Iceland never forget to stop and take a look at the mountain. This is because it is not just a mountain, there is a black sand beach in front of it called 'Stokknes beach'. There are also accommodations available if you want to stay for a day or two to get around the mountain. You can walk around, enjoy the scenery and of course, take a lot of pictures. Outdoor activities like hiking is not very attainable because of the mountain's steep slopes. It is more of a walk by the beach and pose for photos to post on Instagram or other social media sites. You can see the reflection of the mountain in the beach's water which is very attractive to look at.
The thing that appeals to me the most is, we all know that Iceland is also known for its aurora borealis or northern lights. As a person who badly wants to see and experience aurora borealis, Vestrahorn mountain is a perfect choice and ideal spot. Also, I love photography. As I've seen pictures of this mountain, I can tell why it is one of the most photographed landscapes in the world.
In my personal opinion, this mountain is a must-visit destination especially for the people who are into photography. The combination of the beach and the mountain makes it a very perfect tourist destination and subject for photography. The breath-taking view and natural beauty captures lots of hearts. I will for sure add this on my bucket list and visit it in the future to experience the beauty it has to offer.

Our journey around Iceland continues... these pictures are from the day before yesterday. We left the south coast of Iceland and travelled via the older rocks of the East to reach the volcanically active North. The eroded rocks of the East gave us the opportunity to see new rock types: gabbro and granophyre from the now exposed magma chambers of 6 million year old volcanoes. When we reach the North we visited Iceland's mightiest waterfall #Dettifoss this waterfall has the largest volume and Europe and once over the falls the river flows into a gorge that has cut through extention fractures of the plate boundary spreading zone. We spent the next 2 nights in the volcanically active Myvatn area. (at Dettifoss) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2LmqE9JI2j/?igshid=95hsvtdjgo3j
