The Devil’s School
Jacksonville, Florida
When it was first opened in 1918 the Annie Lytle Elementary School, then simply known as Public School No. 4, must have been an impressive structure. 
Today, the ruins of the Annie Lytle Elementary School are a far cry from their fancier past. The halls are choked with trash and debris and vivid graffiti covers virtually every surface. A fire that broke out in 1995 and was blamed on vagrants, gutted parts of the building and caused the roof of the auditorium to cave in, leaving it open to the elements.
After its closure, the school became a popular spot for wayward teens, as well as drug addicts and squatters. As people began to explore the abandoned building, the legends surrounding it grew and it didn’t take long before the school had acquired the reputation of the most haunted place in Jacksonville. In these tales, the building is often known by another name, the Devil’s School.

According to one popular tale, the janitor of the school used to take students down into the boiler room where he burned them alive. One day, one of the students escaped and in the process caused an explosion which blew up the boiler room and started a fire. 
Another variation on the tale says that the principal of the school was a cannibal, who kept kids who were sent to detention in a special meat locker in his office. The students were gutted and hung on spikes until the Cannibal principal could get around to devouring them. In addition, rumors of satanic and occult activity taking place at the abandoned schools also run rampant.
Some who have visited the site say that a huge tree grows somewhere in the depths of the abandoned school, though photos of the site today show no such inhabitant. Given the sheer number of specters said to inhabit the decaying halls, there’s every chance this is some sort of ghost tree and that you might still bump into it if you’re walking the hallways at night.
In 1999, the school was purchased with the intention of knocking it down, to replace it with Lytle Place Condominiums. The project was halted when the city granted the building a historic landmark designation in 2000. Today, the halls of the Devil’s School still stand empty, save for whatever ghostly denizens they may contain.

I am in the midst of a house move. It is not by choice. I am one of the thousands of renters in London facing eviction – although technically our landlord has simply decided not to renew our tenancy, a decision that doesn’t seem to factor into official eviction stats, though it should, given the frequency with which it’s occurring.
My landlord was one of that rare breed: the “good” landlords. You hear about them occasionally. The bar is very low, yet most private landlords (in London, at least) fail to clear it. Not a price gouger; fixes things when asked; doesn’t treat tenants like squatters who happen to be paying half their monthly salary for the privilege of residing in their buy-to-let.
But without proper legal protections and rights for private tenants, such as rent caps, tenancy security even in cases of house sales, and the option of indefinite tenancies, all that separates a good landlord from a bad one is the wafer-thin concept of decency. Tenants are totally reliant on the whims and personal circumstances of their particular landlord. As such, privately renting is not just a financial and psychological burden: it is also a crash course in extensive relationship management.
See: putting off getting the boiler fixed because the washing machine was just replaced, and if you ask your landlord for two costly repairs in a row a little switch in their brain might flip your house from “asset” to “albatross”, and they might decide to sell. Or calling a house meeting to collectively draft an unfathomably sycophantic email two months before your contract renewal essentially begging the landlord to grant you and your housemates the great honour of staying in their beautiful property. Sending them flowers, just because. (There is a housing crisis, and you need them to like you enough to ignore the estate agent in their ear telling them they can collect 30% more in monthly rent.)
And yet, at the slightest pressure decency withers and dies. In September, my “good” landlord asked to increase the rent by a small and reasonable amount, in line with rising living costs (no word, of course, about decreasing the rate to mirror real-terms pay cuts). My housemates and I agreed, but requested the increase came into effect after 90 days, according to the terms of the contract we had signed, rather than immediately. The landlord pushed back, with an undertone of aggrievement that we would repay their kindness in such a fashion, and then went quiet. Days later, we were informed our tenancy was ending. By adhering to the only legal protection we had, we’d become an albatross.
Unspoken was the reality that by referencing the vulgar, transactional nature of the landlord/tenant relationship, we had pierced the gossamer veneer of civility. We had reminded our landlord that they were a landlord, and not simply a kind benefactor. It was ungrateful in the face of their generosity. Personal affront sealed our fate.
Where the state has withdrawn, I have noticed an increasing emphasis on interpersonal “decency” to one another, an exhortation to rely on a supposed inherent goodness that will see us all done right by. Perhaps the seeds of this rhetoric were first planted by David Cameron’s vision of a “big society”, which involved the cutting down of actual society, via slashed public spending, and its replacement with voluntarism. There is a cultural emphasis on being “kind” in lieu of solid legislative frameworks and state safety nets to catch us when we fall.
Often, it is those people with the most material power who preach this doctrine: at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the then chancellor, Rishi Sunak, was instructing the public to practise “kindness” and “decency”, and later refusing to overhaul statutory sick pay. Wealthy celebrities and influencers wield the phrase “Be kind” like a get-out-of-jail-free card at the slightest hint of criticism. And there is a reliance on the individual compassion of the likes of landlords, in order to keep a roof over our heads. This “kindness” is a myth: it is bondage of a feudal nature, an exercise in massaging the egos – or should that be the consciences? – of those with assets and access in the hope that they will continue to patronise the rest of us.
Unfortunately, this vague folk concept of “kindness” disappears as soon as those at the top of the totem pole feel a squeeze; see landlords en masse increasing rental rates in line with their own living costs, never mind that some aren’t even grappling with higher mortgage repayments and have more than enough of a financial cushion from the properties they let out.
It is understandable in times of crisis: a scarcity mindset becomes particularly sharp. The perception of being harder up, however, means kindness falls by the wayside. Self-preservation kicks in, and damn objectivity when it comes to assessing actual power dynamics.
“It’s been a very difficult time for landlords, too,” my friend was told earlier this year, after a rent increase on her mouse-infested flat. The landlord in question collects income from 11 properties. Under the decency doctrine, everyone’s suffering is equal.
Keep your kindness. I would rather have housing security or the ability to easily book a GP appointment without relying on a sympathetic receptionist’s pity when I turn up at the surgery in tears at 8am. “Decency” without the backing of robust welfare and legislative infrastructure is nothing but a farce, existing to alleviate the guilt of the haves in relation to the have-nots. It is a finite resource. The UK, it seems, is close to running on empty.

Allan Baldwin, already waiting to start. four years prison term for receiving stolen tires: Franklin Smith, who was discharged from the Canadian Army after serving overseas in this war; Vernard Gates, Leo Dubroy and Peter Devlin were all committed by Magis-> trate Ivan B. Craig in police court at Chatham yesterday after a preliminary hearing.
More than $34,000 was stolen in the bank holdup.
Peter Devlin and Leo Dubrey have been granted bail and are freed. They appeared before County Judge H. E. Grosch at Chatham today, who permitted the same bail as they were allowed before. Each had posted $2,000 cash.
Only other one of the five who had been free before the preliminary hearing was Vernard Gates, but as his bondsmen were in Windsor the new bail must be arranged through that city. It is expected an application will be made here in a couple of days. His bail was for $16,000 cash.
SURPRISE ENDING A surprise ending was given the two-day hearing when Magistrate Craig sent up Devlin along with the rest. As Crown Attorney A. Douglas Bell, K.C., admitted after James H. Clark, K.C., counsel for Devlin, had protested it, no evidence had been produced at the preliminary hearing to connect Devlin with the robbery.
Mr. Clark asked the grounds for sending Devlin to trial along with the others, and Mr. Bell cited a case in the Supreme Court of British Columbia in which the learned justice had upheld the commitment of an accused man even though no evidence had been put in against him. It was maintained that when accused were charged jointly they should be kept together for the trial.
STANDS BY DECISION In spite of Mr. Clark's objection, the magistrate said he would stand by his decision and commit all five.
Afterward, Mr. Clark said he would enter a motion before a Supreme Court judge in chambers asking that the commitment be quashed before the trial begins.
STARTLING EVIDENCE Startling evidence was given by Gerald Gates, who is now facing s charge of receiving money stolen from the bank, before the hearing concluded. He told of digging in the backyard of his brother, Vernard, on Byng road, Windsor, with the intention of planting a peach tree when he found s boiler filled with tins of money. This, which later was found to total $4,584.67, of which $3,650 was in bills, he had quickly replaced under the soil and then at night, two days after the bank robbery in Wheatley, had dug it up again. Gates told the court he had then taken the boiler to a road in Tilbury East Township and thrown it into the ditch.
He explained that he knew his brother, Vern, was arrested in connection with the bank robbery and that if the money were found in his yard it might cause trouble.
After dumping the boiler in a ditch on a sideroad, he had returned with his brother, Harold, and a girl friend with the intention of getting the money and turning it over to police. He had left the girl and Harold in Tilbury while he continued on alone. But he changed his mind, deciding it would be difficult to explain to police, and left the money where it was.
Still later, he went with Constable Len Neil of the provincial police in Windsor and Detective Chris Paget of Windsor city police and directed them to the spot where they found the boiler full of money.
IDENTIFIED CAR John Nicholson, of Wheatley, said yesterday afternoon he had seen a Mercury on Lake street in his village and had seen men hurrying toward it. Later, in Windsor, he found a car in a lineup of other cars which he identified as the same one. He said the peculiar pattern of dust on it was one thing which led to his picking it out. Earlier, Mrs. Dorothy Julian said she had seen such a car in front of her home in Wheatley.
Sgt. Dave Duncan, of the Ontario Provincial Police, explained that the Mercury owned by Vernard Gates had been put in a lineup in Windsor and it had been picked out by Nicholson as the one he saw in Wheatley. Licence plates found on the car at this time were said by police to have been those belonging to Gates, although they were not the same plates Mrs. Julian had reported in Wheatley.
Another witness yesterday afternoon was Inspector George McKay, of the criminal investigation branch of the provincial police, who told about the investigation in Wheatley and of arresting Leo Dubroy and Peter Devlin n in a Windsor hotel. Later, with other police officers, he had gone to the home of Allen Baldwin and there saw Franklin Smith but not Baldwin.
They had accompanied Smith to this room in a downtown Windsor hotel, and found an army kit, with the name "Smith, F. F.," on the side of it. In the bag they found $6.456 wrapped in pages of a newspaper. Among it was $223 in United States currency and a bundle of new $2 and $1 bills. Smith was arrested and charged with the robbery.
Asked about the money, Smith had said: "It's my dough, but I've accumulated it." Asked how he got it, he replied: "You can see I've done some good betting on the horses."
REVOLVER FOUND Later Baldwin was taken into custody after a blue denim smock, of a type witnesses said one of the robbers wore had been found at his home. A search of Vernard Gates' premises on Byng road yielded a revolver and a sealer of pennies and Gates was arrested.
During a police lineup when Mrs. Kathleen McLean, of the Wheatley bank staff, had picked out Baldwin, he had said:
"Be careful, lady, this is 20 years." Constable Neil explained about finding money in Tilbury East and said Miss Jean Tait identified two $10 bills found with the amount.
