11th November 1493, birth of Swiss German Renaissance physician, botanist, alchemist, astrologer, and occultist Paracelsus. Paracelsus pioneered the use of chemicals and minerals in medicine. His hermetical views were that sickness and health in the body relied on the harmony of man (microcosm) and Nature (macrocosm). Through this work Paracelsus founded the science of toxicology, and would also influence the contents of grimoire like the ‘Petit Albert’ all the way into the 20th century. Of his medical theories, he declared: “The universities do not teach all things,” he wrote, “so a doctor must seek out old wives, gipsies, sorcerers, wandering tribes, old robbers, and such outlaws and take lessons from them. A doctor must be a traveller.…Knowledge is experience.” On the same day in 1569, fellow alchemist and physician Martin Ruland the Younger, born in Lauingen, Bavaria, Germany. Among his works on alchemy, Rutland published the ‘Lapidis philosopici vera conficiedi ratio’ (The True Method for Completing the Philosopher's Stone) in 1606. Rutland the Younger learned the art of alchemy from his father Martin Ruland the Elder, who was a follower of Paracelsus. Paracelsus believed that the existence of the philosopher’s stone, the ability through alchemy of turning base metals into gold; lay with his belief in the element ‘alkahest’, which he stated contained all the elements of earth, fire, water, and air. All art shown is original and influenced by the history of alchemy, magic and early science and medicine, all artwork is also for sale on the website. The Face at the Threshold is the keeper of all gates and doorways, both mundane and mystical. It has little interests in mortal affairs but is often approached by those who seek to gain access to hidden places. It can be appeased, but those who gain its favor also gain its full attention, and everyone who has ever interacted with it say they feel or even see the face when they cross a doorway. Angering it will damn a person to imprisonment between worlds, their soul forced to haunt a threshold. The chill you might feel crossing a doorway or the sense of being watched from a window is likely the victim of the Face at the Threshold. 🚪 • | | | | #lovecraftian #hplovecraft #yogsothoth #cosmic #cosmichorror #multiverse #portal #creature #creaturedesign #creatureart #gods #mystical #supernatural #horror #horrorfiction #horrorart #necronomicon #grimoireart #grimoire #occult (at Stone Oak) https://www.instagram.com/p/COLAISSDuFT/?igshid=vld0kvmit0jb

Mosca. The Great Fly. Beelzebub. The Rat King. Vermin Lord. This primeval entity is god over disease, decay, and filth. It takes many forms and despite it’s grotesque true form, Mosca can be a very seductive force. It enjoys possessing frail mortal bodies to spread its influence and plagues. It’s excrement was used to fill the holy House of No Return, from which the Blind Idiot God made all life. 🐌 • | | | | #plague #plaguegod #disease #decay #filth #demon #god #nurgle #lovecraftian #hplovecraft #monster #cosmichorror #horror #horrorart #creaturedesign #creatureart #bugs #insects #drawing #grimoireart #grimoire #occult #occultart (at Stone Oak) https://www.instagram.com/p/COQM1MSDvka/?igshid=19um7b8ayfh0r

THE SOUTHERN EMPRESS. Goddess of Oblivion, she is a primordial entity that exists out of time and is perceived as a burning woman in a straitjacket lashed to wooden planks and consumed by the flames of the Inferno. She’s one of the newer gods that’ll appear in my upcoming grimoire. 🔥 • | | | | #fire #firegirl #firegoddess #god #deity #myth #mythology #occult #occultism #occultart #mysticism #supernatural #scary #horror #horrorart #horrorbooks #spellbook #grimoire #grimoireart #necronomicon #lovecraftian (at Stone Oak) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNIJkOojnrT/?igshid=15hxa3t8w67vt

24th September 1541, death of Swiss German Renaissance physician, botanist, alchemist, astrologer, and occultist Paracelsus. A doctor must be a traveller.…Knowledge is experience.” One lasting influence of Paracelsus is the work in the following century of English botanist, herbalist, physician, and astrologer Nicholas Culpeper. Culpepper published his books of medical and pharmaceutical knowledge in English, a publishing language that was born with William Caxyton. By publishing in English, Culpepper’s works could be read by ordinary folk healers who could not read Latin. His most known work was ‘The English Physician’ published in 1653, it is known today as Culpeper’s Herbal. His questioning of traditional methods and knowledge, pairing herbs and planetary influences to counter illnesses and disease, led him to be accused of Witchcraft in 1642. Art shown is original and inspired by the story, it can be found on the website: www.ofgraveconern.com You are invited to follow @ofgrave.concern for more tales from history and inspired art. #paracelsus #historyofmedicine #medicalhistory #folkmedicine #folkmedicinerevival #alchemy #alchemyart #alchemyarts #astrologyposts #astrologyhistory #historyofastrology #alchemysymbols #thephilosophersstone #philosophersstone #galen #toxicology #toxicologylab #grimoire #grimoirepages #lepetitalbert #grimoireart #nicholasculpeper #culpeper #herbalmedicinecabinet #folkhealer #folkhealers #herbology #herbhistory #pharmacology #historyofscience https://www.instagram.com/p/CUNd_o5F2dc/?utm_medium=tumblr

24th June 1527, Swiss German Renaissance physician, botanist, alchemist, astrologer, and occultist Paracelsus, publicly burns the established medical textbooks of 10th century Persian polymath Avicenna, “Prince of Physicians,” and second century Greek physician Galen; to protest the medical teaching at the University of Basel in Switzerland. A doctor must be a traveller.…Knowledge is experience.” One lasting influence of Paracelsus is the work in the following century of English botanist, herbalist, physician, and astrologer Nicholas Culpeper. Inspired by the work of medical reformers such as Paracelsus (whose birthday was last week), Culpepper published his books of medical and pharmaceutical knowledge in English, a publishing language that was born with William Caxyton. By publishing in English, Culpepper’s works could be read by ordinary folk healers who could not read Latin. His most known work was ‘The English Physician’ published in 1653, it is known today as Culpeper’s Herbal.
