Grodzisk Mazowiecki/Kozerki Ch F: Marc-Andrea Huesler [6] def. Vit Kopriva [1] 6-1, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP/WTA Joint App
It was a total dominance from Huesler, even though the readability of his serves in the second set caused V. Kopriva to produce longer rallies. Some of those almost slipped, but his discipline through the baseline steadily paid it off for the Swiss sixth seed to bring the first seed off-balance. As a result, Huesler converted 43% of his 7 break points compared to V. Kopriva's non-conversion of his 3 break points, all of which came from the second set.
Besides, even though his serves appeared more readable in the second set than the first, Huesler still stayed solid behind it. Even though he only landed 48% of his first serves, the sixth seed scored 7 aces, winning 92% points behind his first serves to dominate the flow. Even though both players double-faulted three times, Huesler still won 4% more points behind his second serves, which helped him navigating some little troubles midway.
This marked Huesler's first title of the year, finally winning a trophy for the first time since the Aguascalientes Challenger and Sofia (250) 2022. From here, he went back to 165 live in the rankings, while V. Kopriva went to 118 post-runner-up, making him several steps away from the Top 100. They will both head to the US Open qualifying rounds, where they could gain more confidence and form after this run, as long as they got the rhythm right.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Stanislawa Wasilewska was 42 when she was captured by Nazi German troops on Aug. 31, 1944, in Warsaw and sent to the women’s concentration camp at Ravensbrück, Germany. From there, she was sent to the Neuengamme forced labor camp, where she was given prisoner number 7257 and had her valuables seized.
Eighty years later, Germany's Arolsen Archives returned Wasilewska's jewelry to her grandson and great-granddaughter at an emotional ceremony in Warsaw late Tuesday during which families of 12 Polish inmates of World War II Nazi German concentration camps were given back their confiscated belongings.
Some relatives had tears in their eyes as they received the mementoes of their long-gone, often unknown family members. More such ceremonies are planned.
Wasilewska's family was given back her two amber crucifixes, part of a golden bracelet and a gold wristwatch engraved with the initials KW and the date 7-3-1938, probably marking her wedding to Konstanty Wasilewski.
“This is an important moment in our lives, because this is a story that we did not fully know about and it came to light,” Wasilewska's great-granddaughter, Malgorzata Koryś, 35, told The Associated Press.
When Nazi Germany was defeated in 1945, Wasilewska was taken by the Red Cross from Neuengamme to Sweden, but later returned to Poland. She is buried in her native Grodzisk Mazowiecki, near Warsaw.
From another family, Adam Wierzbicki, 29, was given two rings which belonged to Zofia Strusińska and a golden chain and tooth filling of Józefa Skórka, two married sisters of his great-grandfather, Stanislaw Wierzbicki. Captured together on Aug. 4, like Wasilewska, the sisters also went through Ravensbrück and Neuengamme before the Red Cross took them to Sweden.
A family story has it that a Swedish man fell in love with one of the sisters and wanted them both to stay, promising to take care of them, but they decided to go back to Poland, Wierzbicki said.
The return of their jewelry is “important for sentimental reasons but also for historical reasons,” Wierzbicki told the AP.
The items were returned by the Arolsen Archives, the international center on Nazi persecution, which holds information on about 17.5 million people. It stores some 2,000 items which were seized by the Nazis from concentration camp inmates from more than 30 countries, and are intended to be returned to their relatives.
When the prisoners were sent to concentration camps, their valuables — wedding rings, watches, gold chains, earrings and other items — were confiscated and put in envelopes marked with their owners’ names. That allowed for the items’ return to the families, 80 years later.
It was an uplifting moment when the archives volunteers contacted him, Wierzbicki said, but there was also the thought that “history will catch up with you. It was like my aunts were looking at me from the past."
The archives launched its restitution campaign, “Warsaw Uprising: 100 Untold Stories,” to mark 80 years since the city rose up against the Nazi invaders on Aug. 1, 1944, with the goal of reaching the families of 100 victims and reviving the memory of them through their belongings.
Archive director Floriane Azoulay said they are only custodians of the belongings, which should be returned to the families.
“Every object that we return is personal,” Azoulay said. "And it’s the last personal thing a person had on them before they became a prisoner, before they became a number. So it is a very important object for a family.”
Volunteer Manuela Golc has found more than 100 Polish families and each time it's an emotional moment.
“It is often the case that we pass on information that the family was not aware of at all," Golc said. "So this conversation on the phone ... is also very difficult. But in the end we are very happy that the memento is returning to the family.”
If she was unable to trace a family online or through official records, she traveled to cemeteries, leaving notes waterproofed against the rain for the families on the graves of people whose data matched those in the archives, asking them to get in touch.
The Warsaw Uprising was launched by the underground resistance Home Army with the goal of taking control of the capital city ahead of the advancing Soviet troops. It fell after 63 days of heroic struggle that cost the lives of some 200,000 fighters and civilians. In revenge, the Germans expelled the surviving residents and reduced Warsaw to ruins.
During German occupation in 1939-45, Poland lost some 6 million residents, half of them Jewish, and suffered huge material losses.

The variety of descriptions of the devil is something rather peculiar to Polish, German and Estonian trial records. Devils are variously described as German, French or Polish, and within that typology, we have Polish devils who are of aristocratic or peasant origin. The descriptions are mainly concerned with the devils’ style of dress. The most frequent names for devils, according to a collection of trials from Grodzisk, were Jasiek, Jan, and Kuba, followed by Woytech. (...) Hanykowa’s Kuba was dressed fashionably in the German style. (...) In another case, Anna Stelmaszka’s devil was described as pokuśnika po Niemiecku w czerwonej barwie, ‘a temptor in the German style in dressed in red’.
(...) There was also mention of Polish devils, and one may assume that if nationality is not mentioned, then the devil is in fact Polish. Stach, a devil in the Polish style, dressed in green, was neither old nor young, and one of his compatriots, Barbara Konieczna’s devil was dressed as a Polish peasant. Another witch confessed to having a devil named Kuba who was described as dressing in the French style. According to one witch, following her third session of torture, her devil was described as po żydowsku, ‘in the Jewish style’. It was common for devils to be described as dressing in black, green or red, such as a devil named Jarek, who wore green hose, a red hat and black boots. Małgorzata Kupidarzyna’s Jasiek was młody w sukni zielonej i żółtych botach, czapka barankowa, ‘young, in green dress and yellow boots, a lamb fleece hat’.

Somehow, V. Kopriva tried to hang on in the second set, but Huesler stayed solid even though his service game steadily started to get figured. After four consecutive holds, Huesler forced another deuce thanks to his cross-court backhand pass, somehow going after the first seed's backhand before a forehand error confirmed the said break to 3-2. The sixth seed then strengthened his position with a lead to 4-2.
However, a slip of his service game from his forehand side caused V. Kopriva to have several break points. Saving them by forcing a forehand error from the Czech first seed and a slick backhand pass to close a longer rally, Huesler held his serves to 5-3. Two games later, he earned an opportunity to serve for the match, but 2 consecutive double faults only created V. Kopriva's break point. Another double fault fumbled Huesler's match point, but the damage was further averted several points later, taking the second set 6-4 to secure his first title since 2022.

From collapsed roofs to submerged streets, the impact has been felt across various regions, with the situation particularly dire in and around the east-central province of Mazowieckie (which includes the capital, Warsaw) and the central-western province of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska).
In the Warsaw neighborhood of Natolin, multiple warehouse roofs have been severely damaged.
In Chlebnia, a village near the town of Grodzisk Mazowiecki, the roof of a logistics center for a clothing retail chain collapsed while a dozen or more people were believed to be inside. Firefighters are conducting a rescue operation. Aspirant (Asp) Krzysztof Stefaniak from the fire department reported that “an emergency call about a damaged warehouse roof came in around 1:25 PM. [local time] Firefighters arrived and began operations.”. “Fortunately, there is currently no information about any injuries,” he added.. The storms have also flooded a tunnel in Żyrardów, a town 45 kilometers west of Warsaw, further complicating the situation.
Greater Poland underwater In the western region of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska), the storms have caused significant flooding, with streets and cars in the region submerged following a massive downpour. “We’ve received nearly 600 reports of flooding and related incidents across the region,” said Martin Halasz from the Wielkopolska Fire Service. The situation is most severe in the city of Ostrów Wielkopolski, where national roads 11 and 12 have been inundated, and numerous properties have been affected. Firefighters are working to pump water from buildings, including a Tax Office and local schools.
The city hall of Ostrów Wielkopolski reported that rainfall has caused severe flooding and road closures.
“We urge residents to exercise caution and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary,” the statement said.
Gloomy forecast ahead
Looking ahead, the forecast remains grim. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued high-level alerts for severe weather conditions across most of the country.
“We expect intense rainfall, storms, and strong winds to continue,” warned a meteorologist.
The highest level three warnings are in place for the West Pomeranian, Lubusz, Lower Silesia, and Greater Poland provinces, with rainfall predicted to reach up to 80 mm and wind gusts up to 125 km/h.
