Do it for You ft. Google’s 20% Rule
While I was browsing through the internet, I came across an article on “Google’s 20% Rule” for its employees. With a passion for HR, and anything to do with employee motivation, I continued to look into this rule. Google’s former CEO Eric Schmidt realized the importance of giving employees time to do anything they enjoyed. He created the 20% rule, which stated that employees should be given 20% of their time to work on any project they would like. In present time, the use of this rule has led to the creation of Google’s most innovative products. Many large companies and Executive Chairs have imbibed this rule and share that 20% of our time should be dedicated to creative, unconstrained growth. Click Here, to watch a video on Google’s 20% rule. — Personally, I decided to imbibe this 20% rule into my life and do something for my own personal growth. During this crazy time, the opportunity of self-growth has been handed to us, so why not take it? For me, it was doing something that I have always wanted to do, which was starting a blog where I could write about things that I liked, and an area to literally dump my brains content. I had phases where I would start journaling once a month but would never continue. I even bought myself fancy journals, and notebooks to motivate me, but again I would never continue, and it would never lead to something satisfying. As the world is gravitated towards technology, I picked up a passion for creating random vlogs and videos with my friends, but obviously was too afraid to post them because of the one thing that haunts us all- judgement from others. But, as I was reflecting upon 2019, I realized that the only way I would become the person I want to be, is by letting myself be the person I want to be by doing things I enjoy. I once had a someone ask me what my hobbies were, and I didn’t know how to answer the question because I didn’t know what I even liked to do. Then she said to me “you don’t have any hobbies because you haven’t developed as a person”. As much as that hurt, it made me realize it was true. At the end of the day, you need to let yourself flourish and become the person you want to be, by doing things you really enjoy. And through all my loses and gains in 2019, I realized that it really doesn’t matter what other people think about you, as long as you’re doing what’s right, and you’re doing it for you! This past year, has really allowed me to grow into the person I have wanted to become by putting myself out there-whether that be doing something outside of my comfort zone, meeting new people, or simply doing things that I enjoy doing. I want you to also ask yourself if you’ve seen yourself grow. If the answer is no, take the time that we have now to do something that will help you gain new skills and develop. Truely the best advice anyone has ever given me!
