The Modern Art Week or Semana de Arte Moderna (1922)

Exactly 100 years after Brazil’s Independence (1822), a group of artists decided that the country had not yet found true independence, especially regarding art. It was time to shock society with something completely new and genuinely brazilian.

Back in 1917, the young artist Anita Malfatti arrived from a trip with expressionist ideas and her friends encouraged her to organize an exhibition. They were all excited about the innovation she was promoting and later, they agreed it was her who truly inspired their wish to build an art upon new foundations, but the critics were not as pleased with her colourful non-mimetic paintings as they were.

It was Monteiro Lobato, a famous pre-modernist writer, who wrote a two-page critique on Anita’s work at the time and, though he recognised her as a talented artist (when she was not producing “abnormal” art ), he basically shaped the aristocracy’s opinion, leading them into believing that Anita was performing the work of troubled minds and, had it not been enough, he even compared her paintings to boils.

He was so influencing, some people even returned the paintings they had already bought and Malfatti took it very seriously, never attempting to experiment with art like that again. Instead, she went back to the neoclassic style and it was the catalyst for the Modern Art Week.

The main goal was to promote a rupture with academic art, with the idea that Brazil needed to imitate European standards. They mocked traditions and were vigorously booed and pelted by the audience for it. The press and art critics in general were strong in their condemnation, which made them conclude the week had been, after all, a huge success.

i feel like the main reason we have problems is because we don't talk about them

like

why can't we just acknowledge that confrontation is bound to happen and embrace that fact

people have differing opinions because that is inherently who we are and there is nothing wrong with that

but we spend so much time trying to avoid any and all conflict

like it's okay to disagree and have arguments

just don't handle it physically, of course

but it's fine to talk about the problems we have instead of burying them six feet under and pretending that they don't exist because guess what: they do exist, and ignoring them isn't going to make them go away or making them stop affecting you.

you have to talk about your problems and voice those problems in order to get people to understand where you're coming from

seriously i feel like lack of communication is what causes like 5000000% of our problems

why can't we all just talk and yell and argue about things

burying our issues and pretending like they're not there will only result in more problems

also, while i'm at it, let me just say that we need to stop pulling that "i am superior to you so i can end this discussion now" card because fuck no

the conversation is done when both parties agree that the issue is resolved, not one person just closing the topic because they feel like they're done talking about it.

i feel like everyone should respect everyone as equals and not treat one person like they are more important than another person. we should respect everyone equally and just not disrespect anyone.

Olga Benario was born in a Jewish family in Munich, Germany, in 1908, and joined the Communist Youth Organization at the age of 15.

In 1934, she was entrusted with guaranteeing the safe return of Communist leader Luís Carlos Prestes to Brazil. While posing as husband and wife, the pair fell in love.

After the failure of the Communist revolution the next year, Benario and Prestes were arrested and separated from each other. As an act of personal vengeance against Prestes, Getúlio Vargas (president at the time) had Olga, seven months pregnant, deported to Nazi Germany as a “gift” to Adolf Hitler.

“I fought for the just and the good, to make the world better. If I must now say goodbye, I promise I won’t give you any cause to be ashamed of me, not to my last breath. […] I will stay strong and determined to live to the last. Now I must sleep to gather strength for tomorrow. I kiss you both one last time.” (Olga Benario Prestes’ final letter to Luís Carlos Prestes and their daughter Anita Leocádia).
