It's finally Friday! This has been a long week for me and I'm getting ready for a weekend filled with books and snow. Today I bring you a different type of #GuideFriday for my #ReadPuertoRican series. QOTD: What fiction book would you like a non-fiction pairing for to help you understand it better? One of the favorite reasons I love to read is to learn more about particular topics. Some people believe that fiction has no value when it comes to educating or offering perspective about real life events and culture. I wanted to debunk that idea a little bit by pairing some of Puerto Rican fiction reads with non-fiction reads that expand on ideas in the novels. Non-fiction can be heavy and pairing them with a fiction read can add a balanced view and offer glimpses into humanity in more light-hearted ways. Pairings like this also offer context and clarification for understanding. Shout out to my friend @irisbooklist for inspo. Books Featured: 馃嚨馃嚪 The Tase of Sugar & Fantasy Island 馃嚨馃嚪 When We Make It & Down These Mean Streets 馃嚨馃嚪 Juliet Takes a Breath & The Ladies Gallery 馃嚨馃嚪 Never Look Back & The Mythology and Religion of Ta铆nos 馃嚨馃嚪 Daughters of the Stone & Negras, Short Stories 馃嚨馃嚪 Serena, Selena & Translocas 馃嚨馃嚪 Olga Dies Dreaming & Palante 馃嚨馃嚪 Song of the Simple Truth & Invisible Movement *Please note Negras, Stories although a work of fiction, it is highly based on the history of slave women. #ReadPuertoRican #bookish #bookstagram #boricuabooks #readCaribbean #ownvoices #GuideFriday #bookstagrampr #bookrecommendation #books #bookworm #PuertoRico #read #literature #fiction #nonfiction #latinxbookstagram #latinx #booksbooksbooks #boricua #readersofinstagram #reading #bibliophile #booklist #TBR #bookstack #libros #booklover #bookstoread #boricuaAuthors (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZS1JFILU5i/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy Friday bookstapeeps! Today I bring you a new #GuideFriday and #ReadPuertoRican list that I am the most excited about. I had so much fun compiling this list of Puerto Rican Horror books because I live for all things spooky and scary. QOTD: What would scare you if you found it living under your bed? This whole month I have been watching scary movies and shows and reading different types of horror books, from short story collections to anthologies to novellas, etc. I have also watched some of the most interesting horror panels that really help me appreciate how versatile the genre of horror is and how it speaks to greater issues in society. Engaging in all these spooky activities has been the highlight of my surgical recovery process and I have learned so much. I am so impressed with how the genre has evolved and how diverse it is. There are so many interesting sub-genres such as body horror, psychological horror and my favorite social horror. I will confess that I have quite a bookhaul this month of mostly horror books. It made my heart swell with boricua pride to see Puerto Rican horror works out in the world. Working on this list was a reminder of how versatile Puerto Rican authors are and how much talent is out there not being celebrated enough. Today's list is a mix of different horror types and formats including a book solely in Spanish, a graphic novel and even some with historical elements. #ReadPuertoRican #GuideFriday #bookrecommendation #bookish #bookstagram #BoricuaBooks #horror #ReadCaribbean #reading #books #bookworm #bibliophile #spookyseason #spookybooks #bookstagrampr #booksbooksbooks #scarybooks #BoricuaBooks #latinx #October聽 #LatinxHeritageMonth #LatinxRecs #Latinxbooks #LatinxBookstagram #ownvoices #PuertoRico #libros #bookphotos #bookdragon #booklover聽 #Halloween (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVEHqCOLFsv/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy Friday! I am super excited about today's #GuideFriday and #ReadPuertoRican book list. I love to promote boricua works but it brings me extra joy to be able to so to a younger audience. QOTD: What is a favorite children's book that is close to your heart? When I say "representation matters" I'm not just using buzzwords. It is vital for identity formation and boosting self esteem that children be exposed to stories with characters where they can see themselves depicted accurately. Inclusive stories are also important for broadening horizons and building empathy and perspective for others who may be different. I love that children's books allow for building imagination about a multitude of topics and spark great questions and conversations with others. If you have Littles in your life, take some time to peruse your shelves and make sure their library reflects not only themselves but the greater world around them. The greatest gift my mom and aunt ever gave me were books that kept me tied to my Puerto Rican roots. #GuideFriday #Fridaypost #booklist #ReadPuertoRican #boricua #bookstgrampr #BoricuaBooks #bookfeature #boricuaAuthors #bookish #bookstagram #diversereads #childrensliterature #reading #picturebooks #ownvoices #PuertoRico #boricuastories #bookdragon #bookworm #boricuabookstagram #books #booklover #diversereads #representationmatters #bookguide #childrenread #weneeddiversebooks #ReadCaribbean (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTp4qcQrIze/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy Friday! I'm just passing through today with a #GuideFriday and #ReadPuertoRican list for middle grade fans. QOTD: What book outside of your culture gave you a new perspective? Putting these lists together bring me so much joy because I get to turn around and share them with my fellow boricuas. You don't know how much erasure of culture has transpired until you start to search for yourself in pages. This is why I advocate so much for decolonizing our shelves and mindsets as readers. I remember how middle grade me looking for characters that reflected me fully and the sadness of finding next to none. Reading middle grade is how I recapture the magic and find the parts of myself that were lost. #GuideFriday #ownvoices #ReadPuertoRican #boricua #ReadCaribbean #ReadLatinx #decolonizeyourshelf #books #PuertoRico #middlegrade #BoricuaBooks #bookdragon #PuertoRicanLit #bookstagram #latinxbookstagram #bookish #boricuaAuthors #reading #boricuabookstagram #PR #bookrecs #booklist #latinx #welovemglit #bibliophile #bookworm #bookphotos (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS0CBkOrTaa/?utm_medium=tumblr

It's time for the latest edition of #GuideFriday and #ReadPuertoRican. This week I am highlighting memoirs. Some of these I hold close to my heart. QOTD: What memoirs have you really enjoyed recently? Here are some of my favorite quotes from some of today's featured recommendations: 馃敄"And years later, this would be exactly how I understood love: thrilling and terrifying, tears and laughter and then tears again. Love, I learned, could destroy you "- Jaquira Diaz,, Ordinary Girls 馃敄"The cruelest prison of all is the prison of the mind." - Paris Thomas, Down These Mean Streets 馃敄"It seemed too complicated, as if each of us were really two people, one who was loved and the official one who, I assumed, was not."- Esmeralda Santiago, When I Was Puerto Rican 馃敄"The aroma of coffee perking in the kitchen, the mesmerizing creaks and groans of the rockers, and the women telling their lives in cuentos are forever woven into the fabric of my imagination, braided like my hair that day I felt my grandmother's hands teaching me about strength, her voice convincing me of the power of storytelling"- Judith Ortiz Cofer, Silent Dancing #GuideFriday #ReadLatinx #ReadPuertoRican #Boricua #LatinxBookstagram #booklist #Fridaypost #BookRecs #PuertoRicanLit #memoirs #ownvoices #Fridaypost #LatinxBooks #BookFeatures #PuertoRicanAuthors #reading #nonfiction #booksbooksbooks #bookish #bookstoread #PuertoRico #bookstagram #bibliophile #nuyoricans #BoricuaStories #bookdragon #weneeddiversebooks #dignidadliteraria #bookworm #diversereader #bookcollector (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNdatRsLDwr/?igshid=1g5a8dx1whllg

Today's #GuideFriday and #ReadPuertoRican list topic is Puerto Ricans in Comics and Graphic Novels. QOTD: What's your favorite comic book or graphic novel? Comic books improve literacy in the following ways: 1. Motivation: Comics act as stepping stones to more complex reading 2. Reading Comprehension: people have to read between the lines, draw interpretations and synthesize information 3. Exposure to dialogue 4. Writing: Comics have all the basic story elements 5. Vocabulary: Comics use illustrative support to learn new words (Proliteracy.org) I want to dedicate this post to some special booksta friends who always challenge me and push me past my reading boundaries and are always reminding the literary community that comics and graphic novels are reading. They offer social commentary, broaden imaginations and paint the world in unique ways. They also point out that no one character is all good or all bad. Thanks for always highlighting the value of comics and graphic novels: @goofybookaholic @alyssareadstomuch @sailyreads @bookedwithemma @alibraryofmyown @lesbe.reader @andreabeatrizarango @whenreadingattacks #GuideFriday #LatinxComics #ReadPuertoRican #Latinx #LatinxBookstagram #bookish #LatinxArt #ownvoices #list #bookrecs #LatinxCreators #bookdragon #bookworm #books #bookstagram #comicbooks #bookfeatures #graphicnovels #bibliophile #weneeddiversebooks #read #PuertoRicanArt #queercomics #LGBTQIA+ #boricua #PRLove #ReadComics #Fridaypost (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMnatNLrSud/?igshid=196po1gygpirk

It's #GuideFriday and on this week's edition I bring to you Puerto Rican poetry recommendations. QOTD: What is your favorite poetry collection? In the spirit of celebrating Women's History Month, I've compiled a list of favorite female and non-binary Puerto Rican titles. Poetry hasn't always been a choice I made when it comes to reading but last year it became a saving grace. Reading poetry has shown me the beauty of tapping into your innermost emotions. After reading different poetry collections this past year, it has also become a preferred way of social resistance and led me back to writing again. Poetry has also inspired me to pick up more books in verse and other mixed formats. I'm really excited that one of my favorites @elisabetvelasquezpoetry has her first novel in verse "When We Make It" coming out in September. If you're looking for more great poetry recs, please check out Pedro @prettymuchbooks. I've gotten many great recs from his page. #GuideFriday #Bookrecs #bookish #books #bookdragon #ReadPuertoRican #ownvoices #ReadLatinx #poetry #Latinx #booksinverse #bookstagram #LatinxBookstagram #reading #Latinxpoets #PuertoRicanlit #bookguide #poetrycollections #PuertoRicanwriters #PRpoets #bookworm #poetsofIG #libros #bibliophile #bookworm #read #diversereading #ILoveBooks #decolonizeyourfeed #diversespines #dignidadliteraria (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMDYbdEAEKb/?igshid=11zyplhixk6ib
